On this day in 1911, famed composer Irving Berlin, copyrighted Alexander's ragtime band, the multi-million-selling smash hit that helped turn American popular music into a major international phenomenon.

1:03One reason Alexander's ragtime band was so popular was that it was an easy piece for an amateur piano player to master, leading to sheet music sales of over one and a half million copies in the first 18 months of its publication. Surprising fact, Berlin went on to write more classic songs, including White Christmas, God Bless America, and there's no business like show business. Also on this day in history, in 1766, the British Parliament repealed the Reviled Stamp Act. In 1852, Wells Fargo started a shipping and banking company.
