0:00Welcome to this day in history, it's April 3rd and today more than 5 billion people own a cell phone with the device's popularity increasing at the start of the millennium. But the cell phone existed long before then, and on this day in 1973, Motorola engineer Dr. Martin Cooper made the first known call from a 2.5 pound brick-sized handheld cell phone called the DynaTack. He called his rival AT&T's Dr. Joel Engel and said, I'm calling you from a cell phone, but a real cell phone, a personal handheld portable cell phone. Surprising fact, despite forever changing the way we communicate, the DynaTack did not become commercially available for another decade when it carried a price tag of about $4,000. So on this day in history, in 1860, the Pony Express debuted in 1948, President Harry Truman signed the Marshall Plan and in 1996, the Unibummer was arrested in Montana.
