“There’s Someone in the Room.” | Real Ghost Stories CLASSIC
About this episode
Real Ghost Stories Online is made possible by:
Living alone in Hawaii while her boyfriend was deployed had never frightened her. The apartment felt safe, and for months, nothing gave her a reason to think otherwise.
Then came one unforgettable night.
She fell asleep and entered an unusually vivid dream in which she was holding a strange child in her arms. Despite his unsettling appearance, she felt completely safe with him—until his expression suddenly changed.
He looked terrified.
Then he told her something that instantly ended the dream: There was someone in the room.
She woke unable to move or scream. And standing in her bedroom doorway was the dark outline of a man. Sleep paralysis can explain the physical sensation of being trapped between sleep and wakefulness. But can it explain the warning that came before she ever opened her eyes?

I am. You know, sleep paralysis is totally this feeling if you've ever had a sleep paralysis or experienced it. It does 100% feel like it's paranormal. Like it is so hard to tell the difference.
Like it's true. It's even saying, okay, that was just sleep paralysis. Does not make the feeling of the paranormal part go away. And I think can it not be both? That's kind of what I think. You know, because it's so real and it's so like I am awake. Like I am awake. I just can't open my eyes. I'm aware of where I'm at. I know I'm in my room. I just can't open my eyes. Or if I open my eyes, I'm going to see this thing. It's that real. Well, I've had it. I've woken up and had my eyes open and I'm staring at it. And I can't move or look away or do anything. And so to me, it's like, could it be a little paranormal and a little weird sleep thing? I think it could be both. I think you could have both. But you know, like I said, they've been doing some, well said previously to this.
They've been doing a bunch of studies on the sleep paralysis thing. And it is in fact real. People do have it. And it seems to be universally associated with bad things or scary things. When people come out of it, they're very frightened. And to me, that's why I don't get it. It's like, if it was just a sleep thing, why wouldn't you think good things at least part of the time? Like, okay, you can't move, but it doesn't mean it has to be something scaring the crap out of you. There's also a difference between a nightmare and sleep paralysis. You know, because I have nightmares. And you wake up and you can't breathe or you're breathing fast and you're terrified because you just had this horrible experience. And a lot of times you fall back to sleep and it's the same thing going on. And then you start that dream right there. Yeah. But then you're like, okay, oh my god, I'm safe. That was a dream. A sleep paralysis for me has been very, very different than that.
Yeah, but I just don't get when these, you know, why would it always be associated with something scary? Yeah. And so many people have such a similar experience. So this is the story. It says, okay, I have an experience that has been disturbing me for years. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. It's a bit of a story, so please hang in there until the end. I promise it's interesting and disturbing to say the least. So here it goes. I moved to Hawaii to live with my boyfriend now husband during his last year of enlistment in the Navy. Our long distance relationship was tough. I was in Toledo, Ohio. And he suggested I move out there. It's only for a year and I could find a job out there, no problem, as I was in the medical field. So I took the leap and I moved there. The only downside was that my boyfriend being in the Navy would be gone for six months out of the year. So I'd be by myself for the first time in my life as I was moving away from my parents' house.
It wasn't a worry to me as I was 22, so it was time for me to start adulting. What better way to become an independent woman than to move thousands of miles away to a beautiful island where you'd live alone half of the year? I think I would have done that. Yeah. Things were amazing. It was awesome to spend so much time with my boyfriend since we'd been apart for so long. Then it was time for his deployment. My only fear was that I would miss him to death. I had a range for a job when I moved out there. So I knew I would be able to keep myself busy with work. I was never scared of our apartment, even though there were no screens or locks on the windows. Okay. I don't like that. I'd have to rig up something. Because I couldn't sleep. The screens are one thing, but it's the locks part. But not being able to lock your windows? Yeah, that's creepy. It had slatted, slated, slated, slated, slatted, slats.
Slatted. Slatted glass windows that you could literally remove and walk right into the apartment. And I don't like that. I know because we had to do it once when we locked ourselves out. Anyways, I'd been there about six months already. And the neighbors were cool, and my boyfriend had long assured me how safe the area was and how there hadn't been any break-ins in the apartment building in the four years he had lived there already. He left. Things were fine, lonely, but fine. One night around midnight, it sounded like my clothes dryer was running. I could hear it tumbling so loudly and clearly as if it was on the other side of my bedroom wall. I went to call out to my boyfriend, but then I remembered he was on a ship in the middle of the ocean somewhere and wouldn't be able to answer my call. So I put my big girl pants on and I ran out of my bedroom around the corner and nothing. The dryer was not on. There was no noise, dead silent.
I went back to bed and laughed at myself. A few links went by and always find. I worked, I ate, I talked to my friends back home, no problems. Until that night, the night I'll never forget. I went to bed around 9.30 just like every night as I had to be to work early at the hospital. I dreamt of very vivid dream that night though. It was so real. I was holding a baby in my arms and a c- and c- and c- and a sweet lullaby to him. This baby didn't look like a baby though. He was small and swaddled like a newborn, but his head was elongated. His forehead stretched upward and it disfigured his whole face. His eyes were so stretched that you could see into the sockets and his nose was stretched up so much you could see into his naval cavities. He had teeth but they were m- m- m- shaping and crooked. Even so, I felt nothing but joy to be holding him.
He was mine. I know that because the love I felt was so all-encompassing. I sang to him and I smiled at him adorningly and then his expression suddenly changed. His eyes already wide and stretched, grew impossibly wider. His mouth stretched and gaping horror like he was about to scream. Then he started shaking and trembling. His eyes locked on my confused eyes and asked, what's wrong, sweetie? He immediately stopped shaking, looked at me and spoke. There's someone in the room. That has a creepy dream right there. Wow, that's creepy. There's someone in the room like this alien kind of demonic-looking baby says that. Wow. I jolted awake my eyes wide and heart-racing but I couldn't move. My whole body was stiff, paralyzed. I couldn't turn my head. I could only shift my eyes. I looked towards my bedroom door and in the doorway stood the black shadow of a person,
the size of a tall well-built man. He took up the whole doorway. He looked like he wore a hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and boots. I could see all of this but I couldn't move. I couldn't scream. I couldn't defend myself in any way. I thought some sick freak broke into our apartment and I'm done. This is it. The worst thought is possible. We're going through my head. What is he going to do with me and will it hurt to die? That's so sad. I kept trying to scream but my mouth wouldn't move. He, what I thought was a he, just stood there staring from the doorway. His head slowly cocked to the side. I kept willing my arms and legs to move, praying to God, let me move. Let me move. Finally, after what felt like forever, my voice came back. I screamed at the top of my lungs and watched the man in the doorway literally disappear in front of my eyes. I felt my fingers tingling then my toes and soon my legs and arms started tingling.
It felt like my whole body was waking up from being numb, ins and needles. I could finally move and I set up and took a few minutes with my eyes still trained on the door before I stood. On shaky, tingly legs, I walked through my bedroom doorway into the hall, into the living room, and nothing. The door was locked. No windows slats were missing, just me, in an empty apartment with a racing heart. I couldn't go back to sleep after that. I couldn't even bring myself to go to work the next day. I just sat there in the couch in the living room watching TV and trying to understand what had happened. I was awake. After the deformed baby in my dream told me about the presence in the room, I know that. Every part of me was awake, even though I was unable to move or speak for so long. I saw that person or thing staring at me and then fade away to nothing. I was perfectly aware of every minute to the point where I was finally screaming, then moving and searching the apartment.
So what was it? It wasn't until years later that I saw a documentary on sleep paralysis. It was much like what I had experienced. But I know it was that thing that caused it. I still don't know what was there with me in that room. A ghost, a demon, an alien? But I'm thankful for the strange... I am thankful for this strange child in my dream for waking me up. I don't know if I'd be here if it wasn't for him. That's my story. Thanks for reading it. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm interested to know if anyone has had a similar experience in what they've found. Thanks for all you do, Megan. Well, Kathy and I have both had those experiences. Yes. I don't know how to explain it, but it feels very much like that. Like it's that real. And thank God it hasn't happened to me for years. Yeah, I haven't had it happen for years.
But mine was I woke up. There was a man standing at the foot of my bed. Older man. You know, I mean, somebody maybe in their 60s or 70s. But he was just standing at the foot of my bed staring at me. And I could not move. That's the weird thing. You can't not move. And you leave and concentrate. Just move your hand. Or if it happens when I can't open my eyes, just open your eyes, just open your eyes. And I can't make it happen. Well, and that's what they say to do. They say, oh, concentrate on one thing, like trying to move your fingers or whatever. And you think, yeah, but that's what you do. Yeah, but and I can't do try to do that. You know, and I have probably had this happen in my life. I would say in the 20, 25 times range, it's been a lot. That is a lot.
A lot. But I haven't had it happen for probably six or seven years. Maybe five. Anyway, because I remember the last time it happened. And it was like in the morning, seven o'clock, it's light outside. And it's like, there is something horrible in my room. I don't know what it was. And I know it's standing right there. I just can't move. I can't even open my eyes. That one. So I don't know. So I do think it was a sleep paralysis experience. But that's the part to me that seems so paranormal. Because when you finally do come, come around from one of them and you are able to move, it really does feel like you just had an experience with some kind of weird paranormal entity ghost. I don't know like what she said. Alien ghost demon. I don't know. And that's how I feel like I don't know what it was. But I really felt like it was there. And I think one of the interesting parts of her experience was the dream prior.
And then saying someone's in the room. And she remembers it so vividly. Yeah. But to the point that she was so shook and up, she couldn't go to work. Yeah. The next day. I just hope it doesn't happen to her again. Yeah. I wonder if it has or if this was just this one time, whether she's had any more experiences. It just makes me think like they are paranormal experiences that you're like having this experience with the other side, but you're not really supposed to be crossing that line. And so that's what's keeping you down. It's like, that's what's keeping you so still. I don't know. I don't know. It just feels it totally feels paranormal to me. It does to me too. And like I said, when I ever I've read about these studies, they do about sleep paralysis. You know, it always is a scary event. It always is a frightening event.
Well, my question is why? If it's a, if it's this natural thing that happens to everybody, why does it always revolve around fear? And some very scary thing. That doesn't make sense to me. It could just as well be, you know, I was picking daisies or I saw a nice thing or, you know, it doesn't seem to be a good thing to do. It doesn't quite make sense to me that it has to always be frightening. And very frightening. Yeah, very frightening. Well, let's go to a call. Here we go. My name is Family. I'm calling from Beaver, Pennsylvania. And I just wanted to tell a couple of series of events that happened to be on this one day that my sister and I visited a small town on your Calcana, Ohio. So basically this area is known for its paranormal activity to different sightings that have happened throughout the park of Beaver Creek.
And so, didn't know too much about it whenever we were, you know, we were heading on our way there. And as we were approaching the park, I noticed that I felt this very cold presence but just on one certain part of my leg. And whenever I mentioned it to my sister, she gasped and said, oh my gosh, I felt the same exact thing on my leg. And so, if that wasn't weird enough, we just, you know, went about our way. We pulled into the park. We got out into the picture of this house that is supposed to be haunted by this woman who lost her fiance, which is a whole story in itself. But we took pictures of this house, see if we could see anything after we left the park later on.
But took pictures and my camera kept shutting off. And I tried to, what pictures I could take, later on I noticed that there were just a whole bunch of orbs. Now, I don't know what these guys' thoughts on orbs are, but covered in orbs, like it was a blizzard outside. And I will tell you, it was not snowing and it was not raining. There wasn't anything that the camera lens could have been reflecting upon to make these dots appear everywhere, but very weird. Also, something else that really freaked me out that I didn't notice until days later after looking at the pictures again, there was a kind of a cut out figure of a human. It was a white figure, but only half of a body sticking out from behind this building. And I just remember being so creeped out and just zooming into this picture like,
that is definitely an outline of a human body. Not sure what that's all about. Didn't see anything whenever my sister and I were there. So very weird. Then we proceeded into the woods of the park. And there's like an old lock from the early 1900s. And the one girl, again, a whole other story itself, was buried there for a while after she had passed away, and apparently she haunts the lock. So my sister and I walked around there, and then as we were coming back to the car, I noticed that my flashlight was no longer working. And we just bought these flashlights. There's no fuse at the flashlight was going out. And again, the camera that was going on in office well wasn't able to take pictures.
And then, which is probably the weirdest thing out of this whole entire experience was my sister went to go and unlock the car. And it wasn't an automatic car. You had to insert the key and twist it to unlock the car. And the key actually twisted, like the metal twisted on the key to the point where it almost snapped. So she pulled it out carefully, examined the key, and we're both just in shock. Like, how did this happen? She had that car forever. That's never been an issue. It wasn't jammed. It's just very odd. So we carefully had to insert the key to start the car and get home. Just very, very weird things that happened that day. But later on, we discovered that the hauntings of Beaver Creek has a website. And it mentioned something along the lines where if you feel cold presence on you,
it's the woman who haunts that house, taking your youth and making you older, so she can get younger. I don't know if it's true or not, but I just thought that was very weird, especially since my sister and I had experienced that. So I don't know if you'll use my story, but one of my favorite ones, I'll have to call back in for some more good stories, because I feel like I have a lot of them, but there's one for starters. All right. Thanks so much. Bye-bye. So I did look it up, and it does say Beaver Creek. And I'm not looking at the website that she saw. This is just a random one. There's all kinds of them. Yeah. So I'll come up and it says it's home to many ghosts. And one of the most well-known legends is Gretchen's lock, and she had died. And then they were taken her back to Europe, and they never made it.
The boat sank in the Atlantic Ocean. Today's Gretchen, today Gretchen's ghost is seen around the lock, and many people hear her sobbing. And then there's another legend of Jake. It was a night watchman who was struck by lightning. And so people reportedly still see him, and there are more hauntings. There's a lot. Esther Hale. Esther lived in Spruce Vale, which was a town that disappeared when the railroad became more popular than the canal. So yeah, there's all kinds of interesting haunted stories. Yeah. And it feels like interestingly enough, there were just a lot of odd sorts of energies around them. Oh, here's random. Here, this is random. It says, one more haunting at the park is the ghost of Pretty Boy Floyd. What? He, um, it says they found out he was staying at the farm.
Conkel farms there. And he tried to escape and they shot him. And so today's ghost has been seen around the area. Many people have captured his voice on EVP recordings. That's so interesting. So like, do you think that part with a key, that is so strange for a key to break in or start to? It didn't sound like it totally had broken, like it twisted. Well, they had to be really careful starting it. I remember having a keys that, you know, were a little for whatever reason, maybe getting ready to break or something. And being super scared every time I was trying to start the car, you know. Interesting. So could be paranormal might not be. It might just be that was the day the key decided to. Yeah, I mean, that could be. But there were just a lot of little things that sort of add up. Yeah. You know, like the orbs. Yeah, I totally buy into the orb thing. And it depends.
You know, we've had pictures like we did a ghost tour here in town. It was kind of just for fun. And we took these pictures and it looked like a million orbs, but I really do think it was dust. And I don't really think it was orbs. So sometimes it just depends on your pictures. You know, it's hard to say isn't an orb or not without seeing the picture. But sometimes, you know, it just is so different. There's one thing when it's a bug or dust, or you might just get this perfect circle of what could be an orb. Mm-hmm. I don't know. I want to do, I want to dig into this place now. I know. It sounds really fascinating. That was interesting. And the fact that it's so many creepy things happen. Yeah. Okay, I might have to do a little digging on that place. And of course, it's very close to Pennsylvania, right? Is it in Pennsylvania or in Ohio? It's in Ohio.
East deliver pool, Ohio. I want to do a little digging on that place. I thought that sounded super cool, actually. Yeah. So if you have a real ghost story, share it with us.
