The Trick Play - Ron Weaver

True Crimecast

About this episode

In the mid-1990s, a bizarre sports scandal unfolded: a 30-year-old man named Ron Weaver was impersonating a college football player. Using a younger acquaintance's identity, Weaver played at a junior college and then successfully transferred to the University of Texas. Just before the Sugar Bowl, a newspaper exposed the fraud, revealing that "Ron McKelvey" was actually a much older man who had exhausted his NCAA eligibility years ago. His deception unraveled, leaving a shocked team behind and raising questions about identity, obsession, and how far one person would go to chase a dream.
