The Holy Spirit: Your Helper in Mindset Renewal (Part 2)

Something we could just reach for for every decision, every struggle, and every overwhelming moment. And in truth, we do. We took a deeper look at the Holy Spirit, who he is, how he is fully God within the Holy Trinity, and why understanding him is essential for renewing our minds according to truth. And we ended last week with this, if we truly want freedom in our thoughts, emotions, and lives, we cannot do it apart from the indwelling presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. I love hearing from you. So we left off last week with this question. If we truly want freedom in our thoughts, emotions, and lives, we're not going to be able to do it apart from the invalid presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. But what does that look like?

2:04What exactly does the Holy Spirit do to kind of help us gain these freedoms? And the Holy Spirit plays many roles in our lives when he is invited to do so. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, it's a gift that we need to receive. It's not going to be forced upon us. But you have full access to the Holy Spirit through salvation. It's just simply an acknowledgement of that truth and an act of receiving like you would any gift. I mean, I don't know about you, but if someone has a gift for me, I don't leave the gift in the person's hands. I take it and I use it. Use it how? Well, let's go through some of these roles today. John 1426 is where we're going to be looking, and of course, this is the main verse that started my own journey into understanding the Holy Spirit, and it's one that we've been camped out in a little bit. But I am going to read it again just in case you're just tuning in. John 1426, Jesus is speaking, and he's telling his disciples that he's going away.

3:08However, he's going to send someone else. He says, but the Comforter, counselor, helper, intercessor, advocate, strength, and understand by the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, in my place to represent me and act on my behalf. He will teach you all things, and he will cause you to recall, will remind you of, bring to your remembrance everything I have told you. Now, depending on your translation, it may simply read as helper, Comforter, counselor, or just advocate. This is not a typo or a mistake. These all derive from the same Greek word paracletos, which translates as call to one side or call to one's aid. So this term encompasses all of it, the Comforter, the intercessor, the helper, and advocate even in the legal sense. And that's the essence of the Holy Spirit's rule, to come alongside us and aid us

4:13as we face life here on earth. We're never alone in this journey. God tells us that all throughout the scriptures, the old and the New Testament. And we're really blessed to be living in the day and age that we are. Since again, we've been given the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence. We have access 24 seven for him to aid us. And how does he do so? Well, he leads and directs our steps. Romans 814 tells us for all who are led by the Spirit of God, our sons of God, or daughters. And as you look through both the old and the New Testament, you'll see examples of the Holy Spirit leading people to their God ordained assignments. Jesus himself was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for 40 days, where he was tempted by the devil and overcame through the word.

5:15And you can see that account recorded in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. All throughout Pax, you see the Holy Spirit. Again, leading people to various destinations to spread the good news of Jesus, to grow the early church, the Holy Spirit will continue to lead us and direct our steps as we surrender our wills to him and walk in obedience. Just remember that he does not act on his own accord, but only as the father directs him. And that's in John 1613. And Jesus did the same thing when Jesus was here on earth. He didn't act on his own will, but only as the father directed. So if we have Jesus being led and Jesus submitting to the father as well, I believe that we should follow that example as well. And the Holy Spirit is the one who's going to pass along the father's directions. So if you're in need of direction, if you're kind of at this crossroad in your life,

6:19I want to recommend that you get quiet and that you listen for the Holy Spirit to bring to remembrance God's word in your life. And he's going to lead you. Another role that he has is that he convicts us of sin. And this is really important that we understand this properly. The Holy Spirit does not condemn us or shame us because of our sin because we all sin. All of us sin Romans 323 tells us that there's no one who doesn't sin. But the Holy Spirit will convict us of sin. So I'm going to read John 168. It says, and he's talking about the Holy Spirit when he comes will convict the world about the guilt of sin and the need for a savior and about righteousness and about judgment. So the Holy Spirit again, he works in alignment with the will of God with God's word and with God's

7:20heart. And God's heart is that no one should perish. Second Peter 3 verse 9 says the Lord does not delay and is not tardy or slow about what he promises according to some people's concept of slowness. But he's long suffering, extraordinarily patient toward you, not desiring that any should perish, but that all should turn to repentance. We all sin. We all mess up. We're human. And even as followers of Christ, we're still going to miss the mark, which is all that sin is, it's missing the mark that God has set for us. And you know what? It would be unloving of God to let us continue in our sin, which ultimately is going to separate us from his presence. And the Holy Spirit brings about the conviction, that correction. It's a gut check so that we can

8:20repent. And all repentance is simply a change in mind, a change in direction. So we can get back into alignment with God's will for our lives back into right relationship with the Lord. It's always done in love. The Holy Spirit's conviction is always going to lead you towards God. Yeah, you're going to feel sorry. I'm not saying you're going to be happy about your sin, but you will not feel shame, and you won't feel the need to run away or hide from God, because that's condemnation. That's the language of Satan. Romans 8 1 tells us that there's no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. So yes, the Holy Spirit will convict us of sin in our lives, but he will not condemn us. And it really is up to us how we are going to respond to that conviction. And this is where so many people get trapped. Myself included in the past, because they believe

9:26the lie of condemnation. And then they're unable to move forward towards Holy repentance and restoration the trapped. And this is where being accountable to another believer who can pray with you and who can really lead you back to the scriptures, back to the truth. This is where it's really going to be helpful in gaining freedom from condemnation. Hey, friend, can I pause for just a moment? Second Corinthians 3, 17. It says, now the Lord is the Spirit and whether spirit of the Lord is there is liberty, emancipation from bondage, freedom. Jesus came to earth. He died for our sins and he rose again to free us. Galatians 5.1 tells us in this freedom, Christ has made us free. Stand fast then and do not be hampered and held in snared and submit again to the yoke of slavery, which you have once put off. The Holy Spirit is liberty. So if you're feeling trapped, whether it's in that condemnation or if it's in something else, I want to encourage you to seek God's guidance as to what you've allowed to ensnare you again. What thought have you come into agreement with

11:39that's hampered to you from walking in freedom? What pattern or habit have you fallen back into? Again, there is no condemnation here. The Holy Spirit, God is for you. Always and Romans 8.31 tells us that. The Holy Spirit also intercedes for us. I'm going to read you Romans 8.26 to 27. So to the Holy Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness, where we do not know what to pray to offer or how to offer it worth of worthily. But the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance. And He who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Holy Spirit because the Spirit intercedes and pleads before God in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God's will. So there's going

12:47to be times that you don't know what's really going on with you. There's going to be times maybe that you're going through something so painful that you don't even know how to pray or so overwhelming or confusing. And there's just going to be times that you're going to sense something is off. But again, you don't have the clarity. You don't know what to pray for. You don't understand your emotions or your thoughts. And this is where the Holy Spirit in loving kindness, compassion, grace steps in and intercedes on our behalf. And we can rest and trust in his intercession for us. We do not have the mental capacity for full understanding this side of heaven. We need to rely on trust in God. Now there are so many other functions of the Holy Spirit. And I encourage you to get into the word and search the scriptures out for yourself because it's going to bring comfort and healing to you. The question that will arise as you gain more understanding of who the Holy

13:52Spirit is, the question is going to be, well, how do I know this is the Holy Spirit and not me or the enemy. And the first guideline I want to give for recognizing whether it is the Holy Spirit or not is whether or not you're being led into truth according to God's word. The Holy Spirit will only lead you in ways that align with God's word and his character. If the prompting you are feeling or sensing takes you away from obeying God's word or if it goes against it, that's not the Holy Spirit. No matter who the source is, now please do not get hung up on earthly titles. And I'm going to say this as a general statement. Okay, I'm not thinking of anyone in particular when I give this, but I've seen it happen too many times to not say something. There is a trap in following what someone who has a title like prophet, so and so, bishop, so and so, apostle, so and so,

14:58whatever it is, there's a trap that we will accept their words based on their title and excuse away when their words don't exactly align with the word of God. All these people are still human. They're going to miss the mark from time to time like we all do. So no matter who speaks over you on behalf of the Lord, I want to encourage you to test all things and this is biblical. First John 4, 1 says, beloved do not believe every spirit speaking through a self-proclaimed prophet, instead test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets and teachers have gone out into the word world. If it doesn't follow the precepts that the word of God has laid out, or if it goes against the clear character of God, it's not the Holy Spirit.

16:00And as you develop your own relationship with the Holy Spirit, you're going to sense some things off and many people refer to this as having a check in their spirit. You might not know what is off, but you'll know something is. Something's just not going to be right. It's like a quiet warning or feeling like you might not want to do that. Now, this has nothing to do with what feels good, right? Because you know, it doesn't necessarily feel good to forgive the person who hurt you, but we are called to forgive. It doesn't always feel good to pray for your enemies or to walk the narrow path when everyone else is partying down the big road. But that's what we're called to do. So remember, God's Word doesn't conform to your comforts. It calls you to a higher and greater purpose and reward. And the Holy Spirit is always going to lead you into truth, but not always into comfort. And if you're still unsure, I want to encourage you, take it to other believers, we're designed for community just in the fact that God is a triune being. We're created in his

17:05image. I mean, community is our design. We need one another. And I highly recommend that you find a community of believers. And I know this was a huge struggle for me for many, many years based on just unhealed church hurt. And it was a trap. The Holy Spirit will lead you to the believers that you're to be connected with. Ask him, follow his leading because it's in this community where we can test things together against the Word of God and where we can pray together for clarity, for discernment, where we can hold each other accountable to truth, especially when it doesn't feel good. And if you're still unsure, I want to encourage you to wait on the Lord. Just wait with expectancy of his guidance. Wait with hope. Wait not passively but pursuing the Lord in the wait. Just getting deeper into his words, spending more time and prayer and journaling and just meditating on his word because he's faithful to answer. Remember the Holy Spirit is our

18:12advocate, the paracletos, the one who comes alongside us to eat us, help counsel, defend. Living in step with the Holy Spirit typically isn't going to be this loud supernatural cloud splitting experience. It's going to be in the daily gentle reminders of God's Word, the gentle nudges to act differently than what your flesh wants to do. There's subtle leadings. So ask for revelation and insight as you read the Word. Pause to check in before reacting or before making decisions, asking for guidance and for help. We need to take an active role in living our life submitting to the Holy Spirit. We need to practice hearing his voice. Jesus said in John 10 that his sheep would know his voice, well the Holy Spirit is his voice. And we know it by being intentional in our engagement with the Holy Spirit through reading the Word to gain insight and to understand more about what the context is and how to apply it to our

19:17life. And what stops us from asking the Holy Spirit to come alongside us as our helper? Well it's our pride. And we agree too often with the lie that we need to do it on our own, that we need to work for it and we need to earn it and that we're weak or we're less than if we ask for help or if we rely on the Holy Spirit. Now we may not vocalize it but it is directing our actions in the background and pride is the fruit of the devil period. There's no pride in God. There's no room or tolerance for pride either. So to walk in the Spirit requires us to lay down our pride and submit to his leading. It takes rewiring of our well-forged neural pathways that tell us so on your own, try for it, figure it out, make it happen. And it takes a rewiring of the limited beliefs that

20:20we're not good enough that we're less than compared to so and so or that we're a failure of sorts if we hand over control of the Holy Spirit. This is all part of the intentional renewing of our mind, the intentional taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, the intentional working out of our salvation.
