The Dolphins Are About to Find Out What They Really Have
About this episode
The Miami Dolphins’ 53-man roster is set — at least for now — and Kim Bokamper and Joe Rose are taking their first hard look at the team Miami will bring into the regular season. With the opener against the Raiders approaching, Bo & Joe break down a dramatically reshaped roster loaded with young players who are about to experience NFL football at an entirely different level. From three rookie receivers expected to contribute immediately to an inexperienced secondary and major questions about where the Dolphins' pass rush will come from, there is plenty Miami still needs to figure out. But the biggest question may be Malik Willis. For the first time, Willis enters a season as the guy. Bo & Joe discuss what they need to see from Miami's quarterback, whether the Dolphins have surrounded him with enough weapons to properly evaluate him, and why determining whether Willis can become the franchise quarterback could be more important than Miami's final win-loss record this season.

Right. We were there for pre-season practices. Then we made a transition to the pales of WQAM where you haunt every morning from 6 to 10. Right. Maybe sometimes at 9.30 you leave it early. But they're about.
Right. Yeah. So now we're in, now we're moving on. You know, menu have been our mega miles away from Hall of Fame caliber. Right? Way far away. But we're getting closer. We're getting closer to Hall of Fame. As I'm telling you, we're in a refuge here that reeks of Hall of Fame. We'll get to that a little later on. But so it's a little messy here. But you know, things are getting organized. But this is a little Hall of Fame. So just kind of moving along that way. So let's just get this set to stage of where we are. That was a teaser, both of them. That was a teaser. That was a teaser. You're trying to throw that teaser out. I think that could be, man. So now let's start the program. So 53 man rosters done. They went through the first round of cuts. And then they had all the guys. And then when they started signing players and it moved around. So the roster right now, right now, 10 minutes from now, and they changed. But right now at 53, how do you feel about the 53 right now as we're looking down the
barrels of the Oakland or the Los Angeles. You know, I'm never going to get lost. I go Oakland, Los Angeles. It's called the Raiders, but the Raiders say they're looking down the barrel of the Raiders on opening day. All right. So let's go back to the original 53. I think I looked at that and I said, this is not going to be the final 53. Sure enough. The next day they pick up seven or eight guys. And it's got a brand new look to it. Absolutely new look. Oh, by the way, how did they feel about their second, third and fourth quarterbacks? They're all gone. They were traded. The other two released. And so they went out and got a couple of quarterbacks that they felt much better about. It was obvious, but it's thin. It was a thin roster. They did not have 53 guys. They put that 90 together. And I think from the very top to the coaching staff said, we don't have enough. Not to win games. We don't have enough that we think guys complain to this league at a high level.
Yeah. And look, this this team, I think we all agree that this team's going to morph, you know, week by week, change everything. But, but and it's not going to be. So I'm looking at the 53 now. And they, and they, they've filtered out the, the rookies that they brought back and then, and then flush them out with, with some free agents and stuff. I, I think if you look at their, the roster. And you look at the bona fide players and I'm just saying bona fide, meaning that they've played in the NFL. They've, you know, they, they've played in not that they're all pros or whatever, but I'm looking at probably 14 of those guys that are going to line up in, in Las Vegas on week one. Right? Yeah. I think the, the number that we should really talk about is the core of the last two drafts they had. They're sure. Sure. That eight and the 13 here. One got cut. Yeah. One got cut and, and Traymore is on IR. Yeah.
Kenneth Grant is on IR for now as well. Rest of them both. Okay, they're not only on the team a bunch of them going to be lining up against Las Vegas ready to go from both those. So, so we've talked all along about the other draft last year's drafts, the four, the four defensive linemen, Jonas Alvin, Savayin, I, and then we go back to the draft prior to that with Chop Robinson and those guys. And so if you put all those guys on and, and Grant, I think is the one that's not going to be, not going to be played. I don't know. He's out four weeks. He's out four weeks. Yeah. So, so he, but, you know, and I don't understand how some of these guys, you know, and I'm, look, I'm not second guessing because I'm not in the, in the training room, but it seemed like, you know, you're going along, okay, everything's good. There's no injuries in all of a sudden, like week three. Whoa, this guy's not playing that guy. Well, what, what, what, what, what, what, they had a rash of, of, you know, if, if they, did they have a, did they, did they have a rash of what we used to have at San Jose State when I played there? They would, the coach would go, how come you're not practicing? It goes, it goes, it goes my hamstring. I go, did you pull it? No, I didn't pull it. It's a near pull.
It's, it's a near pull. I'm afraid if I go out. It's not pulled yet, but I'm afraid if I get on that practice field, it's going to pull I don't think. So it's a near pull. They know, there's no quote near pulls on this. I, I got to tell you, man, I think this group that they have, it's, it's a, it's a prove me team, show me team. Yeah. And I, I think, Bo, those guys want to play if they can. The good, you know, they don't think to me these guys can be out for the year. Train more may be late in the year coming back, but so far, it looks like a lot of these guys. I think, I think the, the, the, the 14 or 15 guys that I say are bonafied. I like most of all those guys. To be solid players, you're talking about guys like sealer. You're talking about a Patrick Paul. You're talking about the, the running backs. You're talking about, and, you know, you know, you talk about mostly offensive line. Yeah. The defensive front, the guys in the defensive front, you know, you got the, the inside linebackers. And, and so, so the ones, the, the bonafied guys are, are good players.
We just don't have enough of those guys. Well, and Bo, this is about, there's a lot of guys that, you know, they haven't played at this level. Yeah. And facing Las Vegas, you know, just practicing, it's the same guys that are just like you every day in practice. Yeah. And then a lot of guys didn't play a lot in preseason. Zeeck Biggers did not play at all in the preseason football games. He wasn't the only one. Caleb Douglas played like we didn't see him the last couple of games. They kind of suited him up, but he didn't play much. And so, hey, Bo, now they're lining up against veterans who are first and second cover corners on the team. And they're going to see a lot of things. I think you can say that about this whole rookie class. I'm going to see a lot of things they've never seen before. No doubt. So, let's, let's, let's start this out. Well, what, what, that being said, going over the roster and, and just what kind of we feel about that roster in its, in its, its, its, its, its makeup, what to you is the biggest concern on this football team. Okay. I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to spin it a little bit.
I'm concerned that we don't have enough for Malik Willis. Does Malik Willis have enough skilled players around him to have success so we can find out if he's the franchise quarterback? And, and I think all these guys are going to be good. I don't know how long it's going to take, but I think this, this receiver class because I think all three of those wide receivers going to be in the rotation. All three guys they drafted. Coleman, Douglas and Bell are all going to play a lot of football. But I wouldn't be surprised. They're going to catch a lot, but there's going to be some growing pains in there, man. There's a lot of coverages, blocking, check offs. There's going to be a lot of confidence. So, I agree with you, but, but I want those guys to play because I want them all to, I want them to be better next year. But so, you played a receiver position where you had to look at coverages, you had to run routes, you had to do, you had to find different depths of a way to get to the zone. So, so, so what, what do you think those three rookie receivers, which I think they're
all very talented, what do you think is going to be the biggest challenge for them throughout the course of the year to get to where they want to be next year? Oh, I think the biggest things which you talked about, they got to see it. They got to make mistakes in it. They got to have success in it from zone to man and one looks one way before the snap. Now you run your route and it changes completely because the coverage is completely and you're not sure what to do. How about a lot of bump and run and then last second, the guy pulls out into zone and you've already made up your mind. How about blitz break offs? How about check offs when you're on the outside and you're not sure? There's going to be a lot and again, I think you're going to make a lot of plays. I'm excited that all these guys are going to play, but the unknown bowl of how long this takes. You know, we left last year's draft class and I'm only speaking from me, Bo and I made disagree on this. Last year's draft class, by the end of the year, I didn't know who's going to be a good player coming back in year two or not. Nobody did enough for me to go, that guy's going to be a really good football player.
I didn't say enough. You can say Phillips and Marshall a little bit and Trader and those guys who are all going to most likely start or play a lot, but I still want to see a lot more. You know, I think the other thing about the receivers out there is personnel. They're not going to see safeties, which to me, safeties in the secondary, they're the guys that they're directing traffic. They're the guys that look at when they break the hull, they're looking formations, they're looking where the receivers are and they disseminate information forward to the guys in front of them, the linebackers and then the guys in the outside, right? You haven't seen those kind of safeties in come. Forget the physical play of the safeties, the knowledge that those guys have had. They're in there for eight, nine years, seven years. They've seen everything. You can't give them some little minimum, little fake and think they're going to take it. They're smart, they're intelligent and they get to the ball in a hurry.
It's going to take them at least a half of a season to get to that speed. How about getting the call out late and not loud enough and not everybody's on the same page, man, these guys have only been together and these practices and again, Bo. It's a one thing and I'm not going old school and I don't want to come back, but playing a lot of preseason football with the same guys, put your head of the game at speeds the whole process up. And with three preseason games and a lot of our top guys didn't play a lot of football. Dante Trader played a lot at the end and they were trying to get him ready. But I agree with you, Manders, communication and mental mistakes are going to be as big as the physical mistakes that you have to go through to have success in this league. So here's my biggest concern about this football team and look certainly the receipt, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel with the receivers out there. Who's going to put pressure on the quarterback? Our edge rushers, our edge rushers, chopped still. Look, I know that everyone's saying, hey, you had a great preseason.
Someone I think is saying Omar someone said, oh, you use the MVP of training camp. You know, I'm going to hold my judgment on that. Uche then show much. Who else you got out there? You got Robert Beal Jr. You got Matt Herring. You got guys who are these guys? I mean, and you're going to try to put, if you, in this league, if you can't put pressure on the quarterback with the rules that are set for, they want to score 40, they want team scoring 45 points a gig. If you can't, if you can't get pressure in those defenses that can't touch anybody, that if you breathe on, they're going to call passing her parents, it's going to be a long, long, long year. Yeah, no, no, I'm with you. That's a great one. So that didn't see a lot of pressure. So if you're not getting pressure there, then you got to bring those inside backers. Yeah. Then you got to bring safety's up. And then you got to change that whole, what you're doing defensively. And look, I know that, that Jeff Haffley, it wants to have a complex defense, both in
the, in the front and in the backside of that, that defense. I don't know with this group of players that he's got there. If he can roll all the things he's got out in his arsenal. And if you blitz, you better get there. You better get there. You're asking a lot of corners on the outside and, and slot corners and everybody else. And again, there's not a whole lot of experience. When you look at the potential three guys are going to start that game. There's not a lot of experience. You could put their, all their games together and you don't come up with a full season with, with this group of guys. Not that they, and it's the same thing with this whole team. They just need experience. I think some of them are going to be really good football players. It's not a gloom and doom show. But, but it's going to take time, man. And patience is not, look, Joe, we're, we're not saying anything that the general manager hasn't said. And the head coach hasn't said. It's, you know, when, when's look, when's there, you know, we, everyone wants to win, everyone wants to win whenever you step on the field. But you, you got to look at with this, this, this year's about building it up and getting
ready next year. And if you win some, okay, fine. And I know people, I know fans hate hearing that hate it, hate it, hate it. But it's, it's the reality. So, so let's jump, jump out to the, to the next, the, the quarterback situation. See, in a practice, see very little of him in the regular season. And I know he had the opportunity in the pre-season. And I know in Green Bay, he had some opportunities, late in games to play. But man, start, you walk into that stadium and those lights are on and you gotta go. That's a whole different ball game. Well, this is the first time he's the guy. He is the franchise quarterback right now and how we handle everything and again, he's gonna need some help. That's my thing is he's gonna need some help. But when he has opportunities, he either run or make throws and he's got time, he's got to make him. I also like one of the things we did see with him. He can roll out of the pocket and make really accurate throws. And so, well, that's the one thing we haven't seen out of him.
Because they didn't allow him to run the ball very much. You know, and that's probably as scrimmage he did and ran a little bit in the first game. But we haven't seen his legs and that's certainly, that's probably 40% of the package when you bring Malik Willis in the right. And so, I'm roll out a few and make a few nice throws. But you know, Bo, he and he's tying and he's gonna have to hear this all year because people have already made up their mind. We're gonna get one of those five or six top quarterbacks in the draft next year. And I tell everybody, go look at the GM and head coach think he's got chance to be the franchise quarterback. And so, we'll see. It's really up to him. And when he's got a chance to make place, both your guys are covered and there's nothing you can do with it. That's not on him. If they don't give him any time, he's gonna try to run around and buy some time. But again, that's not on him. But when you have opportunity, he's gonna have to make some. Again, we want to say, hey, look, if you get it's the end of the season, no matter how many wins you got, if you can say, hey, we got our quarterback. Yeah. That's what that's what this is about with him. And because if you get that quarterback and we're probably gonna have a pretty high draft
choice, you don't have to spend that draft capital on another quarterback. Yeah. You can get receivers. You can get all these other guys. So another position you're familiar with. Titan position. I thought it was pretty good when we go in the adult church. You had Casmerek. You had Ben Sims. And then that got flipped around, and Deltich wasn't playing. And so who's your starter? Casmerek is a Deltich. Who is this? There you have it. What's happening? I think Casmerek starts at Titan for the blocking part of it. And I think he we're gonna find out he's gonna catch some footballs too, and Deltich is gonna come in and I think he takes over. He's gonna be a nice little outlet receiver. I think it's gonna be a lot of short passes that our quarterback can dump the ball to him. If you're getting it, you don't have a lot of time. Get the ball to dosage and line up in second and three and second and two or third and two as far as that goes. I think those are two guys. By the way, Sims, he's gonna be on this team
and he has something happen. We didn't have him for any of the pre-season had to cut him, feral the same thing on defense. I think he's gonna make the team, but we never got to see him. I would say neither did the front-offers or coaching staff. At one point, they were counting on Sims, trying to be a full-back too in that thing. That's right. Now we got a full-back DJ Hermann, that's, you know, is, you know, because I know they want to play, they want to run a full-back, some kind of a full-back offense. You were converted linebacker and nothing to look at. He catches the ball like it converted line. You know what, he catches the ball like me. With his knuckle hands here, he can't catch the ball. I love his blocking and I love him on special teams. That's a great block on some returns. But we don't have that extra thing we had where he can come out. He just is shown. He just really struggles, gets the football. Okay, so that's kind of so, so here we go. Here's where we are. We're, we talk about Hall of Fame. This is where we're in the domicile, in the warehouse of collectibles for the one the only.
There he is. Jason Taylor, number 99. He looks about Hall of Fame right now. He does. He's looking. He's looking. No, no, no. He's looking down on us. What are you fucking guys doing in my space, brother? Get the hell out of here or pay rent, right? So not only that, but see all this shit that's back on this table? Suit over a little bit, Joe. You know what that, that's a ping pong table right here. So there's like, we got 25 of these, we said that there's 25 or 21 table ping pong tables that are available from the, remember the JT's ping pong table? Yeah, yeah. These are all we use in that JT's ping pong. I was about 10 years of it doing it right? It was very, had celebrities playing on them and they're all here in the warehouse. So we want to try to give away one of these ping pong tables. Now the deal is we're going to ask you a question. We'll figure it out, but it's in, it's in South Florida. You're going to have to come and pick up the ping pong table. But if you win it, it's here waiting for you and some of you guys may, you know,
you never know who played on that ping pong table. Okay, here it is. If you're the first one to answer this question and you can email your answers to Seth at jasontailor.com or is it jasontailorfoundation.com? Seth, because I know you can give me a little signal on that one. But while I'm giving, I'll give you the real one. So the question is how many points will the dolphin score against the raiders? Against the raiders? And it's got to be, it's without going over. You know, what are you, you got to be closest to the points without going like, like, you know, prices, right? You play price, you watch prices, right? With a Drew Carey on there that looks like a knucklehead. I didn't see what you said. So it's, it's jasontailorfoundation.com, right? Just shake your head. Yeah, so Seth at jasontailorfoundation.com, if you can answer how many points will the dolphin score
against the raiders an opening day, points without going over. You'll win the ping pong table and it'll be sitting here waiting for you. That's a pretty good gift, right? That's a great gift. Yeah, I took forever for you to get that shit out. It did, it did, because I was stumbling. You know what? I was stumbling, bumbling, mumbling. Like I usually do. So you sure, you want to give away this, nice ping pong table. He's got fucking 20 of them back here, man. He's dying to give these things away. If you come in, you'll give you two probably. Hey, I guarantee you that. Hey, it's talking about giving away things. Our guys, it's a, it sawgrass automaw out there. Edmore sawgrass automaw, Chris had a gun. I got a pressurized tomorrow. He didn't, yeah, 10, 10, 10 mores. Best, you're probably going to be in there for about 25 minutes. Not long. You're going to get you writing. I'll murder all my men in the service department. Bam, let's go. That's right. I'm going to go back to me. I had more sawgrass automaw in sunrise. I had more sawgrass automaw.com. And look, don't forget that mobile unit. The, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, it goes everywhere.
I was fine. So just call Edmore sawgrass automaw and say, hey, I got, I got a flat tire or, uh, or I got something going on on my car. You need to come and get me. They'll be on the, on the get go. Chris atkins and, and Teddy Morris got something rolling over there. They really do. What, what a group, man. What a group. What a group. What a group. Is a good sly Adele and a good Italian cookie dipped in that chocolate. Oh, no, they don't have that. Oh, no, don't, don't, don't have that. That belongs to somebody else. I know what you want. I know what you like in there. I know what you like that from. Coffee, coffee, coffee. Bill, Italian coffee. Yeah, you got the double chocolate coffee cake. I like everything. There's nothing coffee, you know, say everything goes with coffee. It does. It makes it's a whole thing. You even get their coffees great too, by the way. But if you got your own coffee and this stuff is fresh. Yeah. These coffee cakes I was wondering the first time, like, man, they come in there fresh. Uh, wow, are they a big hit? How about that? How about that one? What is his show's turned into? Let's make a fucking deal today. What are you doing? Are you sure he's okay with that move? I mean, that move. I mean, it's, you know, it's getting close to Christmas time, Joe. I got that close. I'm worried about you. There's no game. I got none else to do. I'm sitting on the go, I don't have to go see this week. You know, college football is coming up. You just need somebody to talk to. My team San Jose stayed, got their ass kicked at USC. Oh my God. You got a pretty good quarterback though, that they look pretty good there, you know, but so that's it. I think that's it, Joe, right? We done. We should have been done probably 15 minutes ago, but maybe we're done just for this whole podcast. Maybe we're going to be off the air.
