football is back and this is believed your home for NFL and college football news and analysis all season long. Now let's start the show. Hello Miami Dolphins fans. How are you today and thank you for listening to the Dolphins Talk.com podcast on this Wednesday, September 9th the first day of the NFL season on Wednesday night. That's a little strange, but that's where we are with the NFL. They will play games any day of the week to make five extra cents. Joining me tonight this Wednesday and every Wednesday this season Simon Clancy. You can follow him on Twitter at SI Clancy. You can read his work right here at DolphinsTalk.com and on Substake at the low red zone .Substake. Simon, we haven't spoken since the draft. How you doing? Good. Mike, how are you? I'm doing okay. Football seasons here. We're our dolphins. It should be an interesting one and we'll talk about that a little bit on today. Show. Let's start with this. The last article you wrote,
I thought was so good. It was so outstanding about, you know, the fake outrage kind of so to speak of. I can't believe my Emmy is not a good team. Like, what have you been watching since January? Where do you get your news? It's kind of like it's been out there. And I think some people. I don't know, little naive. Maybe you don't want to believe it. And now they're sort of getting hit in the face with it. But you spoke about the quarterback, Willis. And you said, you know, it's a little bit nuanced in that the team could go on 17 this year. But Willis could still show he's a long term quarterback of the future. I agreed with a point, but I want you to explain your part of this first. Yeah, look, it is really nuanced. And I completely understand people saying, you know, if the dolphins don't win again, then will this the right quarterback? What if the dolphins, you know, lose 17 games, but lose all of them by less than six points? For example, you know, it's also not one man team. A quarterback wins for me is the most, are all overrated, a statistic argument in sports.
And, you know, you go back and you look, I had somebody say the other day that I saw on Twitter, somebody say that, you know, Willis doesn't win seven games, then he's not the right guy that you don't. Yeah, like, you know, an elite quarterback or a very good quarterback would take this team to seven wins. And I was like, dude, like, Patrick, my homes wouldn't take this team to four wins. Let alone seven. You know, I think the four wins let alone seven. You know, and he was like, well, doesn't matter, you know, a great quarterback never has a losing seat. You know, it's like, well, what about Marino and the dolphins went six and ten or L. I went there at five and 11. Aaron Rogers went four and 12 and 2018, those sorts of things. Like these things happen. And look, Malik Willis isn't going to pay defense. And I think there's some historically bad units on this team heading into the season. I think the secondary is really bad. The safety is really bad. You know, beyond Chris Johnson, I think the corners are poor. I think the overall depth is really bad. I think there's probably between 30 and 33 roster of all players on this team, which means there's, you know, almost 20 players
that you probably wouldn't in any other season put on an NFL roster. And I think that's a massive issue. And that the concern for me obviously is that Malik is going to be unfairly treated because of the fact that this overall team isn't very good. I know from talking to people within the organization, I am aware that the Dolphins do not believe that. There's an element that Willis is being set up to fail, not through any fault of anybody's. It's just the situation that they found themselves in. The cap situation, a lot of aging veterans on big money. And they just wanted to get it all out of the way so they can concentrate on 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030 is being their years. And look, everybody saying, and I've been, you know, banging the drum about the 2027 draft class. But I think it's really pertinent to say that you look at that 2027 draft class. And we were talking, for example, about Oklahoma States Dream Estimaker as being somebody that could be a top 10, top five, top three pick. And Mess to make a really struggled on
Saturday in Oklahoma States defeat to Tulsa. And I think if Mess to make a place poorly this weekend against Oregon, you pretty much already after two games have to say, you know what drew 2028 is going to be the better draft for you. Look at Archmanning, you know, the Todd McShay talks 10 days ago and I talked about it in that article, but McShay talked 10 days ago and he's, you know, he's got contacts in the money family saying, don't be surprised if Arch just doesn't go back for another season that texts it. So, not really, you're looking to be going, oh, okay, that's maybe that's true range of the board. Well, Drake Lindsay is a red shirt sophomore. CJ Carr is a red shirt sophomore. Well, okay, there's two more that are probably going to go back. And then, you know, you can, you know, JKS, that the unbelievable lefty from, from Cal, the the kid Mason Heinscher at Pittsburgh, that the unbelievable, tomorrow, your Taylor at Mississippi State and all of a sudden you're like, wow, okay, we think 2027 is going to be good, but already that field is going to pair down and half those guys are going to
go to 2028 and maybe even 2029. So, why are we in such a rush to judge Malik? And I think the concern for me that is that there's not enough talent around him to make him look good. But I think from what I've seen of him, from what I know from the Dolphins is that they are, you know, Malik will this is not a one year bridge caught back in the eyes of those people that that matter. So we can pontificate all we like on Twitter, we can clutch appels and say, you know, we only won one game is he can't be the right guy. We have to draft a quarterback. That is not what they're thinking. They are hoping that if they get the number one pick, they can sell that for a hill of beans, they can draft a let it more or, you know, a Jeremiah Smith or a Dylan Stewart or whoever it might be that a non-core back take a whole of picks and just use that to continue to rebuild knowing that that team will be stronger going into 2028. Willis will have a better support in cast. His best players and our friends, Brewer, Paul H&N will be under contract and there's young rookie receivers that three of them will have a years worth
of, you know, years worth of legs under them in the NFL. So that's certainly how it's been looked at. And look I just don't think that he's a bad quarterback. I think he's bad either. I think he's going to be good. I go back and I've done it again in the last few weeks. I went back and watch every single snap that he took last season for the Packers and there are throws on there that you just like take your breath away. You know, the ball placement, the touch, the timing, the way that he uses his legs to manipulate the pocket, not to run, just to move the throwing platform to manipulate the pockets, be able to buy time to throw. And one of those things are really, really good in those green make-ups against the Bears. And I think that it's going to be tough to judge him because of the reasons that we've said. But I just do not fundamentally do that. I know this as a fact. The dolphins are not looking at him as a one-year answer and then take archmating and go back to zero again having to, you know, they want to be competitive, playoff competitive in the
2028 season or 2027, 2028. And looking at 2028, 2029, I was really pushing. If you take a rookie quarterback that just sets you all the way back, you know, another potentially 18 months, even the best rookies that we've seen or the best young quarterbacks where the Drake May or, you know, who've been able to kind of push their teams on. That doesn't happen that often. And the dolphins are in a kind of a not win now, but win as soon as we can once we get the, you know, the money off the books and those sorts of things. So it's going to be a very delicate, very nuanced argument. But I think that's certainly the way that the dolphins are leading. Yeah, and I agree with most of that. And one thing real quick, you mentioned a quarter back from Cal. I'm going to see him in person this weekend. I'm so excited on Saturday because he, because they're flying across the country to come up here to Syracuse. And I'm so excited to watch him play in person because I watched that game last weekend. He made some throws. They're just like holy cow. That kid can play. So. Yeah, he did. So I can't wait to see him Saturday. But okay. I agree with like 99% of what you say.
Um, I don't think they want to take a quarter back. But and the one thing I've been saying on this podcast, what you said to all losses aren't created equal. If you're losing 3531, you're losing 4238. You're losing even 2421. You're fighting. You're in the games. It's probably not his fault because like you said, they got no pass for us. They got no secondary. They are hurting on that side of the ball. That I agree. He's your guy and you and you ride with them. But if some of those, let's say half, let's just say half and that's making it up are, you know, 3513, 42 to 7. Yeah, then you have something to think about. Because if they are at, and I think, look, the over unders 4 1 1 2 1 2. I haven't bet it just because I don't want to. But if I did, I'd probably bet the under. I don't think they're getting a five. If they are picking one, two or three. And half of those games, they lose by a lot. I don't know if you can, like, yes, you can wait a year,
100% wait a year. But are you going to be picking one, two, or three next year? Are you going to be in that opportunity to take some one a year from now? When right now, you are. So that's where it gets nuanced. You're 100%. It's totally nuanced. And we got to see, like we're just sitting here making reckless speculations. If this, if that, if this, if that, we got to see how this goes. But I agree. If they're close losses or putting up a fight, they could go 0 and 17. He's your guy. But if half of those games are blown out and that off and take moving and you're picking one, two, or three. I don't know if you should wait a year because in a year, you might not be picking one, two, or three. You might win some games and he, and then you want a few more, but he's still not your guy. And then you're sore to spinning your wheels in the mud. Yeah. You know, and I get that. I mean, I look at, I look at Todd McShay's top 50 big board. He released yesterday. Yeah. Okay. He has got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, quarter, ten quarterbacks in his top 47.
All right. I would say five of them will probably go back. You know, so you kind of think, okay, you have to have a top three pick next year to be able to take a quarter of everything. Well, they only have top three, but you got to be sort of, I would think you'd want to be top half around one. Sure. Sure. But I think most of us would argue that the dolphins will end up with a top three pick at worst or at best in 2027 draft. Now, do they get five seven wins in 20, 20, 20, like the Quick Pro Pro is that if they win six, seven, eight games in 2027, you have to say that that's if they don't win any games and you're blaming Malik for that in 2026. If he's winning seven eight games in 2027 progress. Yeah. You've got to say, okay. Well, if we're saying that you're the reason that we were rubbish and we only won, we won no games. Well, we've also got to say that you're the reason that we do pretty well on the right. I just think it's a no lose situation.
I just don't believe that you have a quarterback with his skill set, you know, who is everything the modern game is looking for, as well as all the off-beard staff, which is great leader, great guy to be around, inspiring all of those things, you know, face a franchise from place well. And then you just jettison him after a year at 27 years old and say, well, we're just going to throw all our chips in on Trinidad, Chamblis, all our chips in on Sam Levy or whatever. What happens if Malik will is then go you cut him or you trade him and he goes to Arizona. Sam Darnels, yeah, turns into a Sam Darnels essentially. Yeah. Well, when it turns into a really cool back, that would be the most Miami Dolphin thing to do is have the guy and then get rid of the guy. I think John Eric Sullivan would do that because I think people even Malik was the flip side of this Mike is that if he just stinks up the joint, then the decision is easy. But I am not looking and I know some people are going to find this really how I am not looking for Malik will is to win or lose games.
I am looking for the things that does the does the the organization of the offense does it all sink a pay does all that, you know, does he throw on time does he throw players open is he putting the ball in the right area, you know, you start to three rookie receivers, you know, in Coleman, Belle, who's coming off the ACL and Douglas, you know, I just don't really understand what people's expectations are if they just think well, he's going to win fight. I mean, I was with a, I can't remember who it was trying to think when we were talking there, but I was with somebody the other day and he said, if Malik will is wins four games, give the guy a new contract. Like, you know, that's what they're either. That's how this team is. Yeah. You know, it's just really easy to point the finger and go, well, Malik will say it and I think you'd be making a big mistake. As we stand here right now, I could be wrong. It's happened twice before in history. So we could turn around in, you know, I just don't want to be a situation where he turns into San Garnos.
I agree. I agree. And to me, it's not even about Windsor loss. Like I said, if they're moving the ball, putting up points, but they're losing close games, that's not him probably. That's really probably not him. That's something else going on. And when I look at this year, the three big questions for me, heading into this year that I want to find out is in no special order. One is Jeff Haffley, a real NFL head coach. Really don't know yet. Does he check that box? I actually think he will, but we don't know. So that's number one. Number two is Willis. Can he be the guy? And again, you know, put up a fight team scoring points. Maybe they don't win, but that is fall type deal. And number three, the young players, which we all know the chops, grants, Jacob Rodriguez, Bell, Jonah, Proctor, Chris Johnson, you know, how many of those guys, probably not all. That's probably just unrealistic. How many of that group and enter some names I'm not listing, obviously, can become foundational pieces that are your foundation for going. Those are the three big questions. Head coach quarterback and how many of that young first second and with chop third year guys can be foundational pieces.
It's not about the wins. I know it's crazy to say as a fan because I'm 49 years old. I've never said this is a fan heading into season. It's not for maybe 2019. It's not about the wins. It's really not about the wins. It's just can we see, can we check some boxes? Head coach, check, quarterback, check, half of those names I mentioned, check. We got something to build off of and it's not about the win. So that's why I agree with you on the world. They think we'll only 17 and he can play well. But the only 17 can't be just embarrassing loss after a lot of people. I mean, pick after pick after pick after that. Yeah, yeah, can't be a thing. But I think if they can get to the end of the season, let's say they win one game. Let's say they've been the jets at home. They go one and 16, but they play hard. They're competitive. They're not getting blown out. They don't give up. It's just a talent issue. But you get in the season. You're like, OK, they won one game, but happily never lost the locker room. Happily, the guys will go to back for him. That's great. The rookies played well. They were thrown in the deep end, but they played pretty well. Willis did enough to make you think, OK, he will give them another season.
And therefore you look at Willis, Patrick Paul at left tackle, Chris Johnson at corner and Trot Robinson, if he plays well and goes back to that rookie four man picks up. You look at the four cornerstone positions of a of anything. You're like, we're sorted at quarterback. We're sorted at left tackle. We're sorted at corner. We're sorted at edge in terms of we got foundational guys. And then you throw in the proctor. Like you said, you throw in a Dante trader. You throw in a Jacob Rodriguez. You still got Jordan Brooks. Somebody emerges Michael Taff or whoever it might be. You know, one of the the type cast married, whatever. And you just think, actually, we got your point. We're heading into a draft. We've got the first overall pick. We've got a bit of money in free agency, but we're not going to spend. We're going to spend it wisely. I want to look. Here's a team that wants to move up for archmaning on boom. We'll take you three first round draft picks over the next couple of years. We'll take a second. We'll take whatever it is a player, et cetera, et cetera. And we take landed more. We take Cam Coleman. We take whoever we're building building building. All of a sudden, you're like, wow, this. This is pieces here. And in that terrible season in 2026, all these guys got to understand how to play NFL football got to understand what it was like to be humbled and play.
You know, for a team that wasn't very good, but they're growing together. They're building that locker room together with their head coach. The draft looks pretty good. The free agent signings. Yeah, they're just trying to fill some holes. But I think that's what you're just trying to get to like, you're just trying to get to a platform where you're like, OK, you don't want to get to the end of the season and be like, damn, you know, you're just trying to get to the end of the season. You know, I think that's what I think is a good and choppers are very good and Willis is terrible and Johnson, a little bit. That is not so because you. That's not good. Yeah, it's so. Yeah, it's it'll be interesting. But I really think that if you get to the end of the season, 10, 15, 18 guys, we're just like, these are the absolute bedrock fundamental guys. We're going to build a football champion on that's what you want. And by the end of the year, I want to see. I want two things to be not even up for debate. Pick up the fifth year option on chop and we give Patrick Paul a long term extension. If we can do those two things by the end of the year, we're in a good spot. So you said those are the premium positions with corner back and quarterbacks that you want to check those boxes off.
First, yes, offensive line and stuff. But left tackles the big one, you know, cash rush or edge corner, but with Patrick Paul and choprabots into by the end of the year, we're talking about we got a lot of these guys up. Pick up to fifth year option. Pay Patrick Paul because he doesn't have a fifth year option extend them now before it gets too expensive. That's a that's what you call champagne problems. And I want to have champagne problems in Miami. But before we do to that, I got to pay some bills here. Everyone go to calcium.com and use a promo code Dolphin stock. A new football season brings us some big questions who makes to playoffs, who wins their division and who takes home the title on calcium America's number one prediction of market platform. It lets you trade those it lets you trade those predictions in a live market week one of the NFL season starts tonight, but for the dolphins, it is days away. And as you know, we're going to be watching all the games. Well, Miami beat the Raiders this weekend. Right now Miami is currently trading at 37%. Meaning $100 trade on Miami winning would pay up $258 if they are victorious on calcium. You're trading against peers in a life market, meaning there's no house. And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position.
Trade the draft pick the game and more on calcium download calcium use the promo code dolphins talk to get $25 when you trade $25 KAL S H I calcium trade on anything 18 and over only restrictions and eligibility requirements apply event contract trading involves risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Calcium products are not available at all jurisdictions prices values and available markets may differ from those mentioned for more information see calcium.com backslash regulatory. So yes, I think that's where we are. I think we're pretty much on the same page this year. Less about wins. Don't hold the win. It's the same thing I've said to a proctor. You know, if we win one or two games, I can see people are ready should took bang should took a above now maybe we should have anyways, but the point is I can't pin that on proctor. If he plays well and we're running for six yards of carry, that doesn't mean it was a bad pick just because it's even one or two games like don't pin that on him.
You know, if you know, Ruben Bain gets 13 sacks and can't and proctor is getting calls for holding every game. That's a different conversation. But if he's playing well in just because we don't win, I can't pin that on him. Yeah, 100%. Although I know you want to want to go to play so that we should take care of you. But that's water under the bridge at this point. We don't can't go back in time. I think it's the. And they look, you've got to trust the process like I think Bain and Downs will be great players. And I hope they don't go on to be all the famous that we miss out. We have a guy who's just, you know, and taking a guard over an edge Russia is a big old decision. But we'll see we got to get these guys time and, you know, I trust in generic Sullivan. He said, he's done everything right. Half is done for everything right. So, you know, we'll see how it plays out. Real quick, just looking far ahead. You think one year from now we're talking about him at right tackle.
That's a really good question. That's a really good question. I don't think Austin Jackson, even if it plays great, I think he's going to be back. I don't think he plays the whole season. Neither. Or gets into a bit of a situation in terms of who kicks out there and how painful it gets. I think. Look, if he plays really well, and he becomes like the kid at Dallas, Tyler Smith, and, you know, he's just a really good. Just leave him there. Yeah. Just leave him there. You know, there's good players. PJ Williams, Melbourne, Ciam, and people like that. Coming through the draft will be right. Tech was in free agency. I think if he just, you know, if he struggles to assimilate at, but it'll be hard to do so when you're when you're between Patrick Paul and Aaron Brueh. And I know, you know, Joe, the seven I had that last year and didn't play very well, but you know, proctor is a different beast. And I think he's going to. I think a lot of what he does will go unnoticed in many regards, just in terms of that kind of the drive blocking and the moving people for the ball and that sort of thing. And there might be a few up and down moments, but if he's just playing well, just keeping there and just bringing another player.
Like otherwise, you're just going to have to, you know, he's going to have to relearn to play a new position that he's never going to find a left guard on top of it. Yeah. And he got to find a left guard and he playing a guy who's years ago, he felt experienced. But he's never played it right tackles. He's always been a left tackles playing on the left side. It's doing everything back to front in terms of the way that you. I just think keeping that left guard. Yeah. Yeah. Dolphins Raiders this weekend, Miami catches a break. No Brock Bowers. He is not. It was just an ounce like a few hours ago. He's going to miss at least one or two games. Now, he was a number of one pass catcher because you look at that wide receiver room. And you know, it leaves a lot to be desired. Not that Miami secondary is all that great, but it probably would have been the easiest matchup for the secondary. And now with no Brock Bowers out there, that's really going to hamper them a little bit. I think that's a big deal in this game. I think for Miami's online, once again, looking at who they have to block, you know, they can't let Max Crosby beat them. Because outside and they got some guys, you know, they're okay. Nothing special. But they better, you know, they better really come from X Crosby.
And I want to see if Miami's young wide receivers can get open because that's going to be a big deal. These, you know, those three rookies are going to be on the field a lot, I think. Jeff Hathley said today that Chris Bell will not be on a pitch count. We'll see if he's being honest or not. I don't know. But what do you think are some sort of keys to the game here? I mean, look, we only really saw the offense on that first. Yeah, it's Washington and it looked really, really impressive. And maybe that was like, happy was like, you know, what screw it? We're just going to, that's it. I don't need any bad, it's bad stuff on tape. Again, it goes back to what we said in the first half. I just want to see good process. People line up in the right places, utilizing those rookies, Doug, this is going to get fed north a lot. You know, the bell thing is really interesting because for all of the off season, I've pretty much been saying on three hours per carry and stuff. And you know, the guy's been saying, what do you think about Chris Bell? I was like, well, I kind of think we get the last quarter of the season out of him. Not that he, you know, he might play a little bit before, but you know, it's going to take a little while.
The injury was back in November. It's not a long period of time. Late November too. Yeah. And here he is. Like, you know, I mean, he's listed as a starter now whether he does start or not remains to be seen, but I don't know. I mean, I think they're going to obviously try and run the ball and awful lot. And why would you when you've got a champ or so? I think they've got the makings of a pretty good offensive line. I really do believe that. And so I'm going to be intrigued to see how that plays out because I think they can really move people. And if Savoniah can continue to be competent, just be competent out there. Yeah. And if Jackson can stay healthy, I think the left side is going to be mollin people. And I think you're going to see a lot of kind of under center, I formation, hand off to HL or pictures to HL with DJ Herman, you know, blocking and cast and then I think they're going to, if they can once they can do that, once they can establish that. I think you're going to see a lot of play action off of that because I think teams will choke down into the box.
And I think you'll see, you know, then hits and speeds is over the top which they've got, you know, and I think Coleman, you know, and Dolsich, those are guys that you're going to be looking at in their short underneath areas, Malik as well, Malik Washington. So I'm intrigued by the offense. I think that if those rookies, I mean, it's if those rookies, I mean, that's three rookie receivers and a rookie tight end. There's an awful lot to just to think that one of them would be above par. And really you hope that three of them are above par and that Kazmerich just does his job as a, you know, a premier inline blocker. And at that point, you're like, wow, this is way better than we expected it to be. So, you know, that receiver room is so inexperienced and so kind of lacking in, you know, in catch it. I mean, God, no, I mean, how many catches Malik Washington got of his career 12 or 10, you know, we got under 150 catches amongst our entire wide receiver group. So yeah, I think that, you know, in terms of the keys, I just think being able to stay on schedule on early downs, you know, find, don't find yourselves in third and eighth, third and ninth.
Get yourself into third and three Malik using his legs, but not to the detriment of the rest of the offense getting that play action game going. You know, the Raiders have gotten a lot of new players, spent a lot of money and free agency. It's going to take a little while for them to jelly and play an awful lot of preseason as a, as a unit. So, you know, trying to take advantage of some of those things. And, you know, when we've got the ball, it's just score what you can get into scoring range and kick field goals. Those sorts of things just keep it tight, keep it competitive on the road. And we're seeing when we end up because I think it's a winable, I think it is a winable game whether it's a most winable game all year honestly. Yeah, I really do. And I look, you know, Brock Bauer's not playing is huge. You know, the best time in the NFL is not going to play. And that's a huge thing for Chris Johnson. It's a huge thing for Jacob Rodriguez is the green dot. It's a huge thing for Dante trader. And those guys that were going to have to cover him and bracket him over the top whether that was Taff or, or Zayn Emerson and those guys. Yeah, obviously, Michael may as a good player, but he's not, you know, he is not Brock Bauer's.
So, you know, and then the flip side of that is that they have a, you know, a two-headed run game themselves with AstroGente and Mike Washington. And they took him a second round from Arkansas or I think Washington, you know, he's had a very good training camp, a very good preseason. They're going to try and feed them an awful lot and, you know, test that Miami line without Kenneth Graham. Try and test Jacob Rodriguez put him in situations where he's making maybe wrong calls and those sorts of things. And, you know, let's see what happens. You want to see Dante try to train a rolling down into the box and making tackles and, you know, and for them for Kirk cousins, you know, it's a huge experience. It's very similar. Can they hit the dolphins with some of that play action so that Dante is rolling down into the box and Bauer the top there we go, you know, with the deep ball down the field. So, look, I think, like you say, I think it is that there is potential for Miami to win and, you know, the plays will be there for them to make and you just want to kind of see them. I do really believe in the equalist, you know, I know we talked about that a lot first off. I do think that the offense, if they can get rolling a receiver, they've got,
there is talent there, the run game is going to be it's just going to make it. If Bell or Douglas or Tolbert can step up and really kind of elevate themselves. That's going to do so much for the perimeter run game and the interior run game for a chance. If nobody can get open if they can't make catches if they're struggling to understand zones and all those sorts of things and then it's going to be a long day and it's going to be a long season because you're just put nine in the box, eight in the box. And if they stop the run, then, you know, that's going to really limit, but any, any purchase we can get through the air that is just going to make life so much easier. Last question is we grab up. Are you a little surprise of Raiders aren't starting windows and I look, I'm not there every day. You're not probably following them every day. Maybe he's just not ready. And if that's the case, I totally get it. But when you take a quarterback one overall and you're not expected like they're not expected to do anything great this year either. Are you a little surprised you're not, you know, just let them play take his lumps type of you. He was one overall.
He was, I think, I think you can argue both ways. I think we're and you see it so much whether that's Anthony Richardson or JJ McCarthy or you know all of those quarterbacks. I think we have a quarterback development problem, both in college football, I think, but also in the NFL. And you know, even going back, you know, when I was growing up with the game in the 80s and the 90s and whatever in the early 2000s, you know, you have a quarterback and you just let them sit for two, three years. And that obviously doesn't happen anymore because of, you know, myriad reasons. But you know, when I was growing up, you wouldn't expect to see a rookie quarterback probably. And really sick. I'm struggling to think of the kind that the last, you know, Jordan love, perhaps was probably the last.
And I'm talking about let the kiddies into a type of deal. Yeah, look at that schedule as well. Miami, we want to win two of the charges. Then at the Saints, then they got the chiefs, the Patriots, the bills and the Rams. I mean, that is a brutal. Oh, yeah, I would sit them down for the Rams game. Don't you own your miles, Garrett is life. Exactly. But like I think the charges are going to be good. I think the Saints are going to be one of the more underrated teams this season. And obviously the chiefs of the Chiefs, the Patriots went to the Super Bowl, the bills, the IFC favorites and the Rams are the NFL favorites to win it also. You know, I think this bit of a murder as well. I don't, I just don't think that why the rush, you know, I don't really want to be winning this year. Let him see it, let him come in through the season. It's not a playoff year for them. Learn a ton behind Kirk cousins who's clearly a great guy, great kind of leader, great men sort of have. Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Jordan love, all these guys were absolutely just fine sitting and playing a little bit later on. So yeah, I don't have an issue with it. One thought I had to here's a wrap up was, you know, everyone talks about my image going to be picking first next year if it's not that it's the jets or Arizona or Cleveland. There's a team out there and I don't want to get into the whole.
I think Atlanta and if it because I don't either one of those quarterbacks are any good. I think I think Atlanta's got a chance to be like really, really bad and like sneak in and get that like one pick overall too. I just don't I mean, and I know it always turns into a conversation about you know who I'm going to say his name, but it ain't just him. Yes, they got pets and they got a great wide receiver. They got a great running back outside of that. I don't know how much else they got and if they don't have a quarterback to maximize that, I don't know where they're going. Yeah, yeah, I think it's very fair. I think it's very fair and they've had injuries as well. Have a day in preseason. They lost, they lost your long walker, I don't walk her and stuff. So yeah, I think I think when you've got drake London and B. John Robinson and guys like that, you probably have a chance. Yeah, yeah, and I think Arizona is probably the other team that's that that's going to struggle. So, but I just the offense really doesn't treat me, but I just don't think the defense is going to be good. Oh, I've been saying that all off season this defense is real. I mean outside of Brooks, Zach Cielor be gone by late October because they're going to treat him for a pick. His contract goes up next year. There's no chance he's here by the first week in November. There's not these wins four or five games Mike.
They're on the right track. They're more than a right track. They that would be an astonishing coaching job and astonishing coach checks the quarterback. I mean checks the box for the head coach Jeff has the guys checks the box for everybody. I think so, you know, I can't see it. I genuinely can't see it's the second half of schedule in the league. There are a couple of winnable games jets at home. Maybe jets away. I think the Colts is winnable too. Colts maybe, but I just who win three four games. I think they got a couple matchup nightmares. I would say Cincinnati's a matchup nightmare and I'm going to that game. I think the Lions are a matchup nightmare Chicago's like there's a couple games where even if they play an A game Miami just because those teams with the quarterback and the amount of water receivers. They're going to spread us out and have a field day throwing, but there are teams like the Colts. I would say like okay, we can hang around on them and beat them maybe the chiefs. I know what's my home. He coming off the knee injury. They're water receivers are good. Like I'm not saying that's probably wouldn't we can hang around for some I think I'm not sure we're going to beat them.
But you know, seems like even the charges I hate to say the chargers, the Broncos, lions, Cincinnati. Those are just bad matchups for my just bad matchups on paper. And I think those might be ugly, but I think the rest of them they can put up a fight.
