The Davies Brothers Set To Play Doolin

0:00That's magic stuff there. The Avley Brothers on Morning Focus. And we're joined now by two very talented other brothers. These ones hail from County Claire. That is, Owen and Brian Davies, better known as the Davies Brothers. Of course, they've been with us before. And they're quite busy at the moment, recording their debut album. And they also have their first full band gig in several years coming up on the 25th of this month at the attic in Hotel Doulin. And they're very welcome to studio along with Karen Johnston, who's going to be singing some sweet harmonies with them in just a moment. Lads, very welcome to show. What's going on? What are we doing? Thanks very much for joining us. So it's been a while since you've been in the studio. What have you been up to since then? Has it basically been about recording or maybe more recently a little bit of rehearsals ahead of the gig? We spent the last few years. We've been to kind of just like really refine our sound and focus on our harmonies and what we think is probably one of the best things about what we're doing. So and our songwriting as well, really getting down

1:00and a lot of all our songs and putting a really good album together. So we're in the studio at the moment recording our first album, which is something that we've been waiting to do for a long time as well. And sometimes there are bands who maybe not so much are their debut albums, because they all say you have your whole life to prepare for that one and then maybe it's the difficult stuff for more album. But some bands, they struggle with lack of material. You've got hundreds of songs. So that's almost a different kind of hit. How do you boil it down to like 10 or 12? Yes, hair enough. I think we got it down to like 25 or something. And then we kind of, because we were constantly writing as well, sort of songs and there's some songs you'd leave down for a bit and then you come back to and yeah, so we'd be, we'd boil it down to a few and then we're work, we always leave a few kind of, and the sideline just they might creep in and stuff. There's no chance of like a debut double or triple album or... Oh, jeez, it loved it. I loved it, it was expensive as well. I suppose there's comfort in knowing that you won't have that difficult second album syndrome because you've got loads of songs to choose from. No, exactly. Yeah, look who kind of focused in the first one. We just want to get our tunes out there in the songs though.

2:01It's been long enough to run them. So it's going to be great to get them out. So at the first full band gig in quite a while coming up on the 25th at the Atakin Hotel Duel and Wonderful venue, I'm sure very much looking forward to it. How did it happen that I suppose more recent performances have just been the pair of years? It kind of just the way it went rather than any conscious decision not to be playing with a full band for one. Well, why is kind of conscious? Like a very good friend of ours who kind of helped us mentor us in the past and stuff, very more. He kind of gave me a voice one day. It was like, you know, when was the last time you practiced your harmonies and I was like, we don't tend to do it. This is about two years ago. And he kind of, he made the point that we should do that. It's something that we should really... It's our superpower if we locked in that. And that's what we did the last two years. Then we just really focused on our vocals and building the songs around that. Has it been enjoyable doing the full band rehearsals? Yeah. Yeah, it's great to get back in the band. We play with bands of our lives since we started. And it's kind of nice coming back with the harmonies into the band again then.

3:02And I like the songs we kind of make with bass lines or with wrists or like that anyway. And where we have the light that we have such amazing musicians join us as well on the night and some salvage players like, so. Okay.
