The Darkness That Followed Her Father | Real Ghost Stories CLASSIC
About this episode
At first, it was easy to dismiss—footsteps when no one was there, voices that didn’t match anyone in the house, and small things going missing or turning up in strange places. Nothing that felt threatening. Not yet.
But over time, the atmosphere inside the home began to shift.
The tension grew heavier, the energy darker, and the emotional strain on everyone in the house became impossible to ignore. What once felt like isolated incidents started to feel connected—especially when one detail stood out more than anything else.
Everything seemed to change depending on who was home.
Years later, after learning more about the land beneath the house, she began to wonder if there was something deeper behind it all—or if whatever was there had simply found the one person it could reach the easiest.

Well, hey, it's going really good. I am ready for some scary stories. Well, this one could be because dark energy in the house, there's one thing about living
in a haunted house, there's another thing when it's dark. Yeah, you're right. And I'm very interested in this spirit and negotiator thing, can it leave? Or will it? Or will it, right? So I need to, I need to hear the story. Okay, let's go then. Here we go. Hey guys, I had sent in a previous story about strange noises in the park near my parent's house, and had added that my parents had a lot of things happen in their house in that neighborhood as well. Just a heads up. This story is really dark and is very personal to me. First, before I go into that, I need to go over what I recently discovered about the land where the house is located. When you hear this, Kathy, you're going to know where she's talking about. Okay, so the house was newly built in Gracemore. I'm hoping I'm saying that correctly. It's like Grace M.O.R. without any Gracemore. With my mom and dad bought it in the late 70s,
so I don't think there is anything going on with the house itself. The only previous owner of the land was a farm, and I didn't find any information regarding anything strange happening from that at all. I also tried to find if there were any burial grounds near the house or under the house, and I didn't find anything on that either. But I just recently discovered that the house is over abandoned caves, and that just made complete sense. Kansas City does have natural caves that have been converted into warehouses. You can pretty much guess that Native Indians lived there and potentially died there as well. When it came to my parents' house, I didn't know if the deaths were natural or otherwise from what happened in that house, I can guess that not all of them were good. So the caves, and they have them in Kansas City, and if you go on 435 when you get around the worlds of fun area, there's hills, and there's caves back in them, they're hills.
So years ago, our dad was a trek driver, and for a while he was delivering some magazines. It was kind of late in his life. So he's delivering magazines, and I went with him, and they would store the magazines in those caves. So it's like we are driving in the middle of, we are going right into this hill, and you go way into it. It's the weirdest place, because there's all these warehouses. So it's a perfect place. I don't know I could do that. I don't know that I could, I, I, it was creepy. It was just creepy, because I think of all the things. I don't like, you know, I'm claustrophobic. I need to have lights and doors and windows, and I don't know I could do that. So it's real close to worlds of fun. So I'm thinking that's kind of the general area. Okay. Okay. So when going back to the story, when I was really young, harmless things would happen in the house, and we never felt threatened by those occurrences, most of the things we experienced were from downstairs in the den area. The family TV was located
down there, and every now and then you could hear disembodied voices from upstairs under the TV noise. Usually this happened when no one else was in the house, and we would mute the TV to see if anyone had returned and no one had. We also would hear footsteps coming down the stairs. We would always mute the TV, thinking my dad or mom was coming down to greet us, and no one ever came around the corner. There were many times that it sounded like someone was coming through the front door upstairs. Many times when I was home alone, I would hear the front door open, and I would go to greet my family, and no one had returned. Things would always come up missing in the house, too. Sometimes you would find items in another place, and others were never found again. Remind you of the house we lived in much? Yeah. Later, more negative types of energies started festering. It all started when I was about 10 years old, and it happened out of nowhere. It's almost hard to explain the overall energy the house possessed. But this is where my
father comes into play. A little history on my father. When he was 10 or 11 years old, he suffered a brain tumor, and it had to have surgery to remove it. Procedures back in the early 60s were less than perfect, especially having it to be a VA hospital. To make a long story short, they had to remove more than the tumor to be sure that all of the cancer was gone. This led to my father having mental and physical handicaps all his life. This enabled whatever entered our house to manipulate him, and in turn, affect everyone else in the house. It seemed to surround my father more than the rest of us, and the only reason why I say this is because when he would leave, the energy in the house would lift and become lighter. Isn't that interesting? That really is. All of it seemed to be connected. It was in the house, but it attached to the dad. You know what that feeling is? A lot of people listening. If you've lived in a place like that,
you walk out of the house and you feel you can feel a difference. There's this heaviness. I don't even know how to describe it, but you feel different when you walk out of a place like that. He would leave the energy in the house with lift. Did he feel different or did they ever talk about it? I don't know. I think there might be a little bit more information. Let's find out. I'm not saying it was his fault by any means, but it seemed to use him to get to the rest of us. I always got along with my father before this, and everyone got along with each other. For some reason, the energy just changed between everyone in the house. This included bouts of deep depression from my mother and me. I found myself not wanting to be close to him. I would always separate myself from him. It just didn't seem like him anymore. His presence was so negative that even him touching me made me cringe. It seemed the only place in the house I didn't feel that way was in my room. I don't know what it was, but I always felt comforted there. In later years, I spent a lot of time
living in this house at this point in time was almost unbearable. You were always on edge, and there was a lot of anger and resentment in the air. Everyone was always at each other's throats. Things would be completely different when you left the house. A huge feeling was lifted, but once you returned, it was just there around you, and it emotionally physically took a toll on you. It got to the point where friends stopped coming over, and if they did come over numerous times, they also complained of this overwhelming negative presence. You imagine, well, no, I guess I can't imagine. That's exactly what it feels like. It's so strange how it's so attached to the dad, and it just gets darker and darker. Worse and worse and worse, but I do get that feeling. You leave the house, and it's better. Your friends don't want to come over, but it was better to go play at their house anyway, because their house wasn't like that. Then when I became a teenager, it got too out of control. To the point of physical violence and my mother had no choice but to
have an exorcism done in the house. Oh, shit. Things got better, but it didn't stop all together. The ominous feeling had eased, but other things kept happening. Many times I would be walking down the hallway toward my mother's room, and I would be pushed into the wall. I started believing that my mother's room was a portal of some sort, not to mention that the room would be continuously ice-cold all year round, even in the dead of summer. I also witnessed a full body shadow person move down the hall towards her door and vanish. I've always heard about the connection between native spirits and shadow people as well, but I can't be sure if there's a link. I do, however, believe that there was a huge connection to everything, including the depression in the house. I have successfully managed to stay away, and I want to keep it that way. My life has been extremely different in so many ways because of it, too, in terms of bringing
more positivity into my reality. My parents still live there, however, even though my mother has learned how to cope with this, I wish she would just move, but she's just stuck in her ways, and I can't talk sense into her. All in all, it seems that the land was sick to begin with, and is traveled to the house in some way, but that's my take on it. In conclusion, I want to say that if there are people out there suffering from this, you are not alone. There are so many people suffering from similar experiences, and they think they need to stay silent. This may be because of fear of sounding crazy or being shot down and having others downplay it. Truth is, things like this do exist, and they are real to people experiencing them, and you don't know until it happens to you. People need this kind of place to feel safe enough to tell their stories because I know from writing this, it was extremely hard for me to share. Thank you for making this a safe place for others to open up without judgment, take care. Oh, there's a lot to that story. There is, there's so much going on there. It's like,
my brain is just kind of racing about thinking about unpacking it all. Let me ask you a question, then. Do you think, because she looked in the house, the house was new, and this is something we've talked about before, about a new house can be haunted. You could bring in an object or something, so maybe there was even that aspect of it. She felt like it was the land that had somehow kind of, there was, you know, something bad had happened there, and that could be. That could be, that could definitely be possible. And I don't know, if you live in that house, you might have a gut feeling your instinct could very well be right on that. But I could also see that her father having physical and mental handicaps, maybe he was easier for, or more susceptible would be the better word, more susceptible to the spirit. And it was a dark energy, obviously. And when you live like that, it's just darkness, it's heavy. It's, and that could have affected him too,
like it does cause depression, it does cause anxiety, it does cause all of those things. It sure does. And, you know, I know from my past experience living with somebody that has mental illness that it does weigh on everybody as a very dark, very heavy. And so I'm wondering if we have more than one thing happening in here as I listen to it. I definitely think there's some paranormal things that I'm hearing. You get pushed into a wall, you see shadow people, things are, you hear things coming down the stairs, and those voices that you hear and then turn down the TV, you know, because you think you hear people upstairs or something. I think those are all very valid paranormal experiences. I'm wondering if there was some depression, mental illness, other things happening with the father that, because the way she was talking sure did
remind me of my family. And, and I'm talking about my husband, the children really felt that darkness in the house and the mother did too. But, you know, became like, there's just nothing I can do about it or whatever. And, you know, I finally got to the point that I just had to leave too. I couldn't stay in there any longer. And so I'm wondering if it's a combination. Right. And it could be, you know, with a negative dark energy in that house anyway, it definitely could have made his issues much worse. That's what I'm thinking too. So I'm thinking maybe it was the combination of things. I do find it interesting though, with all the things happening in that house and you know the mom felt it that she still lives there. Yeah. I think sometimes people just like she said, my mom's just not going to change her ways. She's, you know, kind of stuck in this life. Maybe the mom just doesn't know how to get out or maybe she just doesn't want to. I don't know. I'm not,
I can't stand a judgment of anybody. I just knew I had to. I couldn't live in that kind of darkness. So good for her. Get out. My children all say they always feel so much of a weight up their shoulders when they, you know, they've been there and they leave. They're like, oh my gosh. Yeah. And I get it. I think she's totally valid. I think it's combination of things. Yeah. Don't you? I do. I really do. You know, I think it's the energy, the family dynamic and the father and then as time goes on living there, you know, it just progressively was getting worse. That situation, I'm just telling it, there's a little PTSD that goes on and there's a process to get over living in a place like that. That's right. So I hope that she finds it in her heart to continue having the best relationship possible with her father. I can see going back to that house and I'd stay in there. I can too. There's always a non-hunted motel six or super eight
clothes anywhere you want to go. You bet. Nobody's going to haunt a best wester. That was a dark story. It was, but I think it was good. And you're right. I think she needs to take care of herself. I think you're right about the post-traumatic stress from those sorts of situations that you live in for a long time and you grow up with and feel a lot of guilt over for leaving. You know, I left my mother there. I feel guilty and things like that. And don't, right? Take care of yourself. I agree.
