Test Scores Show A “Generation-Long Decline.” Is The Sky Falling?

About this episode

Today on AOTA Shorts: The learning loss hawks are back, maybe, and this time with new data. Almost everywhere in America students are performing worse than their peers were 10 years ago according to new data from the Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford. From 2015-2025 the trend holds for nearly all demographic groups. Wealthy and poor districts, racial groups, students with special needs. It’s a disturbing trend, with exacerbating effects for the most marginalized. And, there could be many factors at play in that window of time, including the end of NCLB, the rise of smart phones, the COVID pandemic, rampant mental health concerns for young people, and more.  Are the learning loss hawks onto something here, or is there more to the story? Manuel and Jeff discuss!
