Talkeetna Speed Limit Drops to 45 mph for Summer

Drivers near Takitna on the parts highway will see a temporary speed limit drop from 55 to 45 miles per hour this summer. State transportation officials are testing the change around Takitna spur road to improve safety near businesses and a local high school. The reduced limit runs from May 15th through September 15th, covering the busy tourist season. Officials have not finalized the exact length of the zone yet, but it targets high traffic spots. Local representative Kevin McKay pushed for the trial after similar limits worked and nearby areas like Houston and Willow. He says the will remind drivers they are entering a business zone with more people around. State troopers will enforce the speeds as part of their routine patrols. Last year, they handed out 3126 tickets along the highway. After the test, officials will review driver data and follow federal rules for any permanent change, including a public comment period.
