Oklahoma Sooners fortify their defensive line with the surprise addition of Braxton Fely from Boise State just hours before game day. Does this injection of veteran talent signal a deeper rotation ahead for Brent Venables' squad this season?

John Williams and Jay Smith break down the Fely acquisition, what it means for Oklahoma’s defensive tackle depth, and how the Sooners plan to distribute snaps among young standouts like Trent Wilson and Nigel Smith. The conversation spotlights Oklahoma football's matchup against the UTEP Miners, stat predictions for Xavier Robinson and Elijah Thomas, and the strategic value of experienced transfers. Listener mailbag questions fuel debates on running back rotations, special teams threats like Lloyd Avant, and whether the Sooners can pad the scoreboard. It's game day and the Oklahoma Sooners are ready to do something magical. You are a Lockdown Sooner.

You're daily podcast on the Oklahoma Sooners. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. What's up, Sooner Nation? Welcome to Lockdown Sooners. And thank you for making Lockdown Sooners your first listen every single day. He's Jay Smith of unfair sports. I'm John Williams of Sooner's Wire. And congratulations, Sooner Nation. You made it to the first game day of the 2026 college football season tonight. Inside Gaylord family, Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Oklahoma football will be played when they take on the U-TEP minors. And Jay, we've got a new addition to the crew. Yeah, it's a little wild out of nowhere. There was another court ruling outside of the LSU when actually Danny Saile and another group of players had filed for a TRO because they were part of the Colorado five for five deal for the 2022 class. And that guy actually got stayed.

So the NCAA kind of won on that one. So the league wide one, all the players didn't go, but if you did your own locals, those were different. And so some players did this in Oklahoma, Saile won it. And then a new player, Braxton Feely, who sounds like he moved to Oklahoma already, that he had been looking at Oklahoma, honestly, even before like this court hearing hit as soon as the five or five thing went down and players start to make moves. Sounds like Oklahoma was in conversations with him and possibly Saile at the same time. And so they took both of them. So now Braxton Feely has joined the team, John, is kind of all over the place. This is a guy with over 1800 snaps to his resume. He's been a productive player. He was a two time all mountain West Conference selection solid edition for Oklahoma. Now, let's get him sex over the last two seasons. That'll play, Jay, that'll play. And I like 33 total pressures this season according to pro football folks last season according

to pro football focus, including five against Washington. That's pretty good. That's pretty solid. Right. We'll take it. I'm here for it. I think that's pretty solid. You know, against USF, he had three total pressures. That was a pretty good USF team. Notre Dame didn't fare so well. Just one total pressure there, but did have a stop. So productive player, somebody who's going to create some issues on the inside, it's just going to be interesting to see how he factors into that defensive tackle rotation. And when he begins to factor into the defensive tackle rotation. Yeah, I'm kind of curious to how long it'll take for him to be able to get in there. I know the big thing to me is, and a lot of people have asked him first off, how can Oklahoma add somebody? So with his TRO, he was given it for being able to transfer because he wasn't given the opportunity before because he didn't know that he was going to get an extra year. I get that fifth year. On top of Oklahoma only has 102 players on the roster.

I win, did the math. So they have technically three roster spots available. And so they add Saelee. Now they're adding Braxton. That gives them, you know, two more. On top of that, does that lead to people who have asked the question, is Oklahoma not comfortable with their defensive line right now? I don't think that's the case. I think it's that these are two veteran players who are older with tons of snaps and your entire defensive line behind Stone, Jayden Jackson, and technically Nigel Smith and Bishop Thomas really young. Yeah. I mean, Trent's in his second season and in their rest are true freshmen. So adding just in it, it's like having another Dominic Williams and possibly a Grayson Houghton. I'm not sure if they'll be at that town at level, but having some bodies is always a plus. So Braxton comes in 6'1, about 296 or just under 300 pounds.

So he'll play probably a three-tech maybe slide into a nose, especially if you can put on a few more pounds. But yeah, I don't think it's a bad pick up. It was an interesting move. I'm just curious to exactly like you said, if he's going to end up in the rotation down the line. This to me feels like a move for November, December. Yeah. Where where depth is going to be of most import, when you have to play deep into the season and your guys in your rotation, maybe they're a little wore out or dinged up or banged up. Well, now you have a veteran that you feel comfortable with throwing out there in a lot of different situations and feeling comfortable that he's going to be able to hold up his end of the bargain. And you've got two of them in Saeily and in this kid from Boise State, Braxton Feely. So it's important.

We saw an Indiana team. We saw an Ohio State team the year before be able to take advantage of having some veteran depth on their roster, not being so devastated whenever they faced an injury. Well, this kind of helps to provide some veteran insurance and continues to push a Trent Wilson, continues to push a Brian Harris. It's not a bad thing or a Tate Carrington. It's not a bad thing to add veteran depth. Yeah, that's what I see it as well as I see it as veteran depth for long term. So November's any interest? I'm glad you point that out because I didn't think about it that way initially, but that makes sense to have some players to be able to play later in the season because the goal and the expectation is to once again, like we did last year, play into December. And if they do replicate what they did last year, having those bodies prepared in a position where you're super young, it's helpful.

Because a lot of those dudes, you'll see Trent, you're going to see probably Nigel next season like crazy. You may have Tate Carrington ready to go at that point. Those young players are still going to be able to rotate with the vets, but you've got those. If you feel like, okay, I need a veteran dude out there to go make a play. You can bring him in. But feeling with his numbers and what he's done kind of feels like he may actually play a lot earlier than expected. I could see a bit of a ramp up time using the month of September as his training camp and then come October. It's, hey, it's feeling time. Are you feeling me? Yeah, or he's a practice dude the entire time. Yeah, it's literally a low risk high reward situation because you are comfortable, but you do need veteran bodies. And now you just, if you feel like, oh, you know what, it makes sense to play him. You play him. You just added a roster spot because you could use the roster, extra roster spot anyway. And we're still waiting for clarity and clarification on all of this.

Yeah, none of this is settled. And Brent Vettable spoke on this earlier during the coaches show at Rudy's barbecue where he said, Hey, so I always on the going to be on the roster, but we're not going to play him until we get more clarification. And I'm sure the same is true for Braxton, Eli as well that once it's all kind of settled, then they'll feel comfortable. But this is, it's almost like placing a bet and just hoping it comes up black, right? You're, you're throwing out there in the roulette table and you're watching the wheel turn. And if it comes up your color, your number, then you're good to go. If it doesn't, well, you took a chance. Yeah. But the benefit very much outweighs the risk. If they're on the roster all season and they don't play because none of the legal stuff works out to where Oklahoma can play them, then okay, no harm. No harm. No foul. No foul. You didn't lose anything. But if it turns out that these guys can play and you're not forced to take a fine to

forfeit a game to vacate a win to be outside the college football playoff, then you've got two veteran defensive tackles that you can add to your death chart and just raise the talent floor. Yeah. Well, I think the only thing that sucks in all of this is that it's one of those scenarios where Oklahoma's participating in all of this craziness with the TRO. Well, we already were with Owen, Hainaki. They'll technically be a part of this, but the the the the weirdness of the pro player conversations like he didn't play pro. He didn't sign a pro contract. I don't even think he went to minicamps. So the only thing I know I did see is they had the Boise State pro day and he bench press 38 times, two and a quarter, 38 times, which was the leader in all of the NFL combine if he got a guy invited. So yeah, you have another college guy that can play college ball.

See what happens. See what happens. It can only it can only help you. Right. It can only help you. All right. Coming up next, we got your mail back questions as we get ready for game day here on locked on sooners. And you'll get into that every day your channel where you can just kind of hang out and talk to us all day. All right, coming up, we got your mail bag questions here on locked on sooners. We're going to start with our guy Shadow Wizard from the everyday club asking, what are your stat predictions for the game? Who's leading?

Good one. Russia, who's the leading receiver? What does John mature for? All right. So leading Russia, I'm going to say, will be Xavier Robinson. I think he's the one that breaks off the biggest run on the day. And so he's able to take the lead receiver. I'm going to go with Elijah Thomas. I feel like he's going to play a lot more snaps than most. And I actually think John throws for 300. I think he gets some big plays and he gets out the game. To me, this is the opportunity to padstats. So you do take advantage of it. Plus build chemistry with all your receivers. So I think they take care of that throughout the entire take advantage of that throughout the first half. And then we no longer we should no longer see John again. So for me, leading Russia, I'm going to go to Zeff and Walker because I feel like you're going to see him run the ball a lot in the second half.

And he was very productive in the spring game. So I expected to be productive if he gets the opportunity. So outside the box thinking here, but that's the way I'm going to go. Leading receiver, I like your Elijah Thomas pick. I can't really go against it. I think you're right. I think he plays a lot more than Isaiah, a satanian, trail, hair, a trail hair. So get out there. He'll get his run in in that first quarter. And then I think you see more manny choice in the second. Michael Carter. But I think you see a lot of Elijah Thomas. I don't think they're going to take him out of the game until it's well, well in hand. John Matier, I predicted 225 and it feels low. So I'm going to go closer to like 275 with another like 30 or 40 yards rushing. So I've been thinking about it. I'm going to be honest. Yeah, I may drop that. I think he may and they may not actually step at this game. This may end up being the 235 yard game that they just go out there quickly.

Get a big lead and then pull him out of the game. I think dealing Gabriel did put up some big numbers against you. Back in 2022. Let me see. Yeah, Gabriel threw for 233. So that makes sense. That may be closer to what John does as well. He probably goes into 235 range. And so I changed my mind. I'm going back to my 225 prediction. 225 is a fair number. There you go. I think I think this probably where he's going to end up in. And mostly the reason I felt that way to begin with was just I feel like they're going to really make an effort to run the football and run a lot. Yeah, I think it's opposite of Arkansas State where we ran the ball well. We ran 200 yards in a game. But dealing Gabriel with 300 and then Jackson on a through for another 100. So we'd like 400 yards in a game. But yeah, they they end up just trying to run the ball and just burn cloth. Like and I think that that's going to be the goal is to burn as much clock as possible. Get us out of here in preparation for the big house.

Gens michigan. All right, this is a fun one right here. This one comes from Marshall Jenkins on YouTube. Yes, who will be Alex Ross, Justin broiles or Antonio Perkins and get return touchdowns this season? Lloyd of mine. I think Lloyd of mine actually ends up getting a one or two touchdowns this year. He was really solid at Tulsa when he did it. He had some good numbers at Colorado State. I think he didn't get and no, he had a touchdown at Tulsa. I think he gets another one here. I'm going to think Isaiah satania's got to get at least one punt return touchdown. He was close to breaking it a few times. Yeah, and I just I think we're going to see some opportunities. Just don't just don't fumble, please. Just don't do that. All right, next one speaking of Lloyd of ont sooner. Sammy in the everyday club asks will Lloyd of ont stay RB one listed as a co starter. With Xavier Robinson for a week one. I don't think so. And I don't think there's anything I need. It's him. I just don't think that he's going to end up being RB one.

I just think as long as Xavier Robinson stays healthy, he's going to be your guy. Yeah, I think a healthy X Rob ends up being it. I think that by mid season, Jonathan Hatten gets up there with X Rob. And you use Lloyd a lot in your third down back. I think they hold Tori back as long as possible to make sure he's good and healthy. Because like you mentioned before later the season goes on. You're going to need bodies in your hope is that he's fully 100% by then and he'll be ready to go as needed. I think that. Yeah, you you'll probably end up X Rob in Lloyd of ont and then Hatten moves up with X Rob and Hatten with Tori prepared to come in late in the season. My bold prediction on Lloyd of ont is a thousand all purpose yards where he gets you maybe 500 rushing yards, maybe 350 receiving yards and then another 150 to 200 return yards.

You know, guys don't return the ball near as much because there's a lot more touchbacks in this era of college football. But I could totally see him taking one to the house, getting several other big long returns. He's going to be a weapon in the passing game. And I think when he does get an opportunities in the run game, he's going to be productive as well. So that's kind of my bold Lloyd of ont prediction is he's going to help this team in a lot of ways. See it. I can totally see it. It's actually pretty good. All right. We got another one coming at you. This one is on bow Bentley. Will we see bow Bentley's first reps? I say yes. I think this is going to be one of those games that even if it's the final drive or two of the game, and they're just saying, Hey, get out there and hand the ball off. They're going to want to get him some time, not necessarily to be QB two, just to get his feet wet and be exposed to college football. And you have two opportunities to do that this year.

It's this game and it's the new Mexico game. Potentially theoretically, hypothetically speaking. I don't know if he's going to play. I don't know if we go that deep into the road. Could we sure I just don't I don't know. I don't know if we end up playing three quarterbacks. It just doesn't feel like it will make sense to do it personally. This probably if there was a game to throw him in, it possibly would be this one, but I don't think that they'll play him in this game. I don't think they're going to play him at all in this game. I actually think we get zero bow Bentley snatch. That'd be sad. Every sad times. It's just a great opportunity. I expect to see a lot of wet new power, like the whole third quarter, I think it's a new power. And then at least like my expectation is at least half of the fourth, if not all of it, but I would really like to see bow Bentley just go out there, turn around,

hand it off to DeZef and Walker or Andy Bass for several drives and just see what happens. Like just again, let him experience what it's like to run out on the field in an Oklahoma uniform for the first time before if he does win for the start job. Right. Yeah. Before if he does win the starting quarterback job before it's week one of next year. And he's going out there and it's like, all right, now it's your time. Like this is very low stakes, low pressure. If he does get an opportunity to play, it'll be low stakes, low pressure. That's a, that's, that's a fair one. I just don't sense it. Yeah, I just don't, I just don't sense it. It's okay. This is just another John and Jay fight. And Jay's going to be sleeping on the couch because of this argument that we're just wow. He gave his relegating me to the couch. Oh, just crazy. All right. Coming up next, we're going to ask another question about the running back rotation and just

give our final thoughts on Oklahoma versus you, tap going into the game. You want to stick around for that because it, this feels like a game where Oklahoma should dominate, but are there some areas in where you tap could potentially create some trouble? We'll discuss all that next year on Lockdown Sooners. Support for today's episode comes from ultra pouches. Last mail back question comes from Preston in the Locked on Sooners discord. He asks, will any running back touch the ball 20 times? 20 time Russia in this game or it could be 15 carries and five receptions or, you know, just 20 touches. 20 touches in general. Okay. Like how you add at the caveat there, I appreciate that even more. I'm going to say no. I don't think anybody touches the ball 20 times. It just doesn't make sense. To me, it feels like what they're going to do is spread the wealth as much as possible. And I think that that kind of, yeah, is how everything's going to go. I would be surprised if Xavier Robinson, Lloyd Avant, Jonathan Hatton, DeZephan Walker,

Andy Bass, if any of those guys touched the ball more than 15 times. I would kind of be surprised by that simply because there's no reason to, if you get out to a big lead, empty the bench, you've got a full clip. If this isn't like last year where you're going into the game and you've got two running backs that are healthy and capable of playing for you, you've got five guys that they feel like can play for them. Even all the way down to Andy Bass, you've heard a lot of positive things about where he's at in his physical development and his ability as a running back for Oklahoma. So I'll be curious to see if we get to see Andy Bass. I really hope so. That dude's been through a long journey in his collegiate career from the end of his high school career. It's, it's time for the Andy Bass show. I'm ready to see it. So yeah, I don't, I don't expect that. I also don't expect a receiver to get more than 10 targets either. That would be unnecessary for me. Yeah, I'm really, it really would be unnecessary.

I want us to play, I want us to play at least five backs. Like I want five running backs to hit them. No reason not to. No, in this game, there's no reason to try to find a hot hand. We should be able to move them or we should be able to move furniture with no problem just because of who they are. We should be able to move furniture. And in that case, that is exactly what should happen. Just move furniture guys, just move furniture. Just give one guy a series at a time or multiple series in a row. Like if you want to give Xavier Robinson the first couple series, then go to Lloyd of Onton X couple series and then go back to X Rob and then go back to a Lloyd of Onton and then throw in Jonathan Hatten for a couple series. Give them that time to really get into the flow of the game series to series as opposed to in and out and not really being able to find that vibe. But I trust implicitly 100% without a shadow of a doubt. I trust Dealer McCullough to get this thing figured out and to best put those guys in position to be successful.

Me too. I trust him 100%. Yeah. All right, Jay. Final thoughts on the U-Tap game. What's your feeling on this minor's team coming to town? I mean, 93 career starts from everybody on the roster. Snaps. No, no starts. I was trying to the first time. It was starting. 93 total. We have over 360 as a team. 93 for them. The offensive line has one career start with three career appearances. They're starting offensive line. One career start, three career appearances. That's it. So to me, our defensive line should be able to push everybody out the way. You should be able to get to the quarterback. There's a thing I'm going to look at on both sides of the ball on defense. Can we get pressure with three? And can we get pressure with four? We watched our Mason Thomas basically punch his way by himself on roughly five offensive

linemen and get a safety against Auburn to win the game. We know we should be able to get pressure with three dudes. In this game, we better get pressure with three dudes. Granted, I can expect their quarterback to get rid of ball quickly because they expect us to get pressure with three dudes. And EJ Colson will just quickly sling it. He's a pretty accurate guy. So that is my expectation. Just getting pressure with three on defense. That's why I'll start. I think my guy, Jaren Sport over at Senors wire, put it well in that they're not going to put EJ Colson in a position to get beat up by Oklahoma's defense. They're going to scheme to get the ball out quickly, whether it's on screens or bubbles or jet sweeps. They don't want him to take a beating. Similar to what Illinois State did last year, right? When they started their backup quarterback against us and then they saved their starter and then they went on to make it to the FCS national championship game.

Smart coaching. So maybe don't get your starter beat up in week one by one of the best defenses in college football, especially when you tip has to go, don't they play Michigan in week three or something like that? Yeah. Yeah, they play Texas State right after us and then they have Michigan week three. So yeah, it's rough. And then they play New Mexico like two weeks after that. It's tough. Yeah. It's a long haul for them. And if EJ Colson is as good as I think he can be, they want him for the whole season. I just think this is one of those games where it's a serious mismatch, whether you want to look at it analytically or by snaps or by blue chip counts on paper. It's a serious mismatch. And if Oklahoma goes into it, taking them very seriously, which I think they will, because I don't think they're going to take anybody lightly this year. And it's going to be one of those games that is likely over by half time.

And it's just a great opportunity to get a lot of young guys some snaps. Yeah, put them away as early as possible to where you only had to think about it. You put them away super early zero concerns. You're good. All right, Jake, give me your final score prediction for Oklahoma versus Utah. I've been really leaning on the big score in this game. I'm starting to wane away from it to where it's like, yeah, this is just going to be a 40 something to nothing game, whereas 44 to nothing or something. But I'm going to go ahead and lean more back to where I was feeling initially. I think that they beat them at around 56 to 63 to nothing. Yeah, I landed at 56 nothing. That's kind of where I've been. I feel like Oklahoma can get a defensive score too. It wouldn't surprise me to see him get a special team score in this one. I think the offense comes out to make a point, whether it's by running the football or by John Mateer slinging it for 300 to remind everybody just how good he he is, which will then

eventually help the running game because people will be so concerned with John Mateer that they're like, well, we better drop four or drop eight into coverage. And then now we can run the football on them. One way or the other, Oklahoma's going to create balance and establish balance as their offense of identity. And that means John Mateer's going to sling it. This run game is going to dominate and Oklahoma is going to be out to a huge, huge, huge lead by half time. And then your second, third team guys are going to bring it home with a couple scores of their own. So I expect a big, big win. This will be Oklahoma's first opportunity or first time getting 50 points since the 2024 season when they did it to the main and can't wait. It's game time. Baby is game time. It is. It's game week, baby. I cannot wait to go see it. Some find us will be floating around campus. I'll be there a couple of hours before the game. I'll probably be around campus corner hanging out or something. I know John and his family's going to walk around as well. We'll be in section four. So come say hi.

If you want to section four, we will have some locked on sooner stickers. Come get you one, put it on your laptop or whatnot. And so yeah, find us. We'll be around. And Jay will be around for the live show and post games. So be on the lookout for that. I'll try to be, but it's probably going to be unlikely. Yeah, the signal is really bad. Yeah, but there it may possibly maybe have been making appearance on your phone and just be quiet and walk around or something. I don't know. We'll see, but I will definitely be on here ready to go. And this is going to be my kids first big time sporting event that they've ever attended. We've gone to like minor league baseball game in the past, but it's this is big time. This is huge. And so I'm, I can't wait for them to just take it all in. So I'm excited about that. And that's going to do it for today's episode of locked on sooner. Thanks so much for being a part of the show.
