After this last loss against Memphis, there's some serious skepticism around nuggets nation about what they can do in the title race. I'm going to talk to you about it and tell you why it's a little bit overblown here on Lockdown Nuggets. We're going to discuss the Toronto Raptors first Denver Nuggets game tonight. We're going to talk about Denver finding any semblance of momentum and joy at the end of this season here, but first we're going to do a little bit of a standing check in. We're going to talk about what the path actually looks like for the nuggets right now and why nuggets fans have certainly have a right to be skeptical in this situation. I'm not going to tell you not to be, but I am going to try to dispel it just a little bit, talk to you about what is real, what is not real for Denver. Heading into tonight's games, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, they have separated themselves from the rest of the Western Conference. Despite the fact that the Lakers have won eight games in a row and are nine in one of the last 10, the Minnesota's on a win streak that he used in a struggle that Denver is falling

3:06down to the sixth seed, everybody is still relatively bunched up in the Western Conference. And certainly in that middle stretch, the Lakers are probably going to get the three. I'm not going to say that they aren't at this point, Minnesota, they are in position right now to get the foreseed. Houston is 41 in 27, Denver is 42 in 28, Denver has the tiebreaker over Houston, Denver does not have to do too terribly much in order to try to pass them in the standings. Denver has fallen, like there's there's no question about it, there were opportunities for the nuggets to take off and to really put themselves into a good position against some of the best teams in the NBA. Unfortunately, over the course of these last 10 games in the month of March, Denver hasn't done that. Now, there's a whole bunch of reasons for why. One, the nuggets have not been able to win in the clutch. Two, they've had some really tough struggles defensively and have been apathetic in various

4:12stretches like against the Memphis Grizzlies in which the skepticism is very healthy from nuggets fans and I wouldn't want to dispel that at all. But the other thing that has popped up here over the course of these last few days is people have started really talking about the schedule. People have started really talking about, and this is just brutal, this is really tough. Of the 10 games that the nuggets have played in the month of March, eight of them have been tied to the front end or the back end of a back to back. Let me say that again, 80% of Denver's games have involved a back to back in some nature. So even if Denver had Aaron Gordon healthy that entire time, they didn't, but even if they did, he was going to miss half of them because they're trying to rest them and stay prepared and put themselves into a really good position to be in a playoff race, to actually be at their best self for a playoff run. But ultimately, it has been completely ridiculous what this schedule has entailed for the nuggets.

5:19And part of that is due to a rescheduling that I talked about with my guy Swipe on Wednesday night, but there are so many things that I think you can point to. There was a stat that was brought up by Dan Hyatt. I believe he's works for altitude, he's on Twitter, you should definitely follow his work. The nuggets have only been at home, or maybe this is another account, they have only been at home for 44 days, like in terms of the actual schedule so far. It is by far the lowest amount of home days spent, like just involved with games in the entire NBA. They have had so many one game homestands, so many road trips, they've been so focused going on the road over the course of this time that it has been very difficult for them to develop any sense of momentum, any feeling where they can take a breath at least and every single time that has happened over the course of this stretch, they've gotten hurt, they've

6:20gotten injured. It has definitely felt like Denver has been on the short end of the stick. They have more back-to-backs than any team in the NBA. They've had more road back-to-backs than any team in the NBA. They have always traveled, it has felt like, and they haven't really been given any favors in this case. Now, what does that actually mean? What does that actually entail? Other record has been worse than I think it actually should be. The point differential that they've put together, especially when they are healthy, they have underperformed that from a record standpoint because they've fallen apart in key moments because they have put themselves into bad positions even when they have things go their way. This has really been a Murphy's Law kind of situation that when something has an opportunity to go wrong, it has, and for this Nuggets team, they've dealt with that this entire time. Some of it, you create your own luck, you create your own opportunities, you should be playing

7:22hard, you have to execute it at the right time, you got to make the shots when they count, and Denver has not done that to be clear. But they've also had their arms tied behind their back at various points throughout this season, and I don't want to dispel that. I think that that is an important aspect of this, that this Nuggets team is not in a really good position at any point in time during this season. The last time there were in a good position was before December 15th or so, you're okay to survive a couple of starters being out, but it was on top of that, it was the having 14 guys on the roster, which, again, their own volition to start the season, they put their own hand behind their backs because they're trying to duck the tax. But they've had a lot of things work against them in a situation where, clearly, this is not what Nuggets fans thought was going to happen. This is not the vision that we laid out, certainly when I was talking about what this

8:25season would be like, I'm talking about like 58 wins, 60 wins, somewhere in that general range, the Nuggets at max now can only get 54, and that's if they win out, they're probably going to get around 50, I guess, maybe even less than that, and so that's clearly not what everybody was hoping for, not what everybody was expecting from this Nuggets team. Okay, now we've got that out of the system. Now it's important to understand the lot in life, to understand that this is not always going to go according to plan. There have been teams that have won championships when things have not gone according to plan at the beginning of the year. It hasn't happened recently. I'll say that. You want to work in reverse order, okay, see, last year, everything went according to plan for them, despite the fact that they suffered injuries, and there are serious injuries there. Boston everything went according to plan for them. They were number one by a long shot from an odd, not an odd, but like from an Eastern conference

9:29standpoint, there was nobody who was really challenging them. Denver in 2023, everything went according to plan. 2022, Golden State, not like there were things that they benefited from certainly. They're probably the weakest of the champions, but like not everything went according to plan. Steph Curry was hurting into the playoffs, and I remember being a pretty big storyline for them that, hey, he came off the bench when they faced the Nuggets in that first round playoffs. A series that I had blocked out of my head for a while because I forgot that the Nuggets that have been lost in the first round during the Yokech era. Are things capable of falling apart when the playoffs roll around because Denver hasn't had any time to build up chemistry, sure, but are the Nuggets able given what we saw last year, given what we've seen from this team before, that when things look pretty bad, that they can still find a way and they can cobble some things together, sure, like you think

10:30about what Denver can do with a nine man rotation in the playoff run where they go small that features Murray, Christian Brown, Cam Johnson, Aaron Gordon, Nicole Yokech, and you've got Bruce Brown, Tim Hardaway, Spencer Jones and Peyton Watson, like that's not that bad. That's a pretty good group, but they haven't had that group at all yet. It's been a long time and really like Spencer Jones wasn't playing that much at the beginning of the season anyway. So there is a theory behind the practice that if Denver can just get themselves on track heading into the final few games of the regular season, that there will be an opportunity for them to cobble some things together, but it is going to be difficult, it is going to be arduous, it is going to be frustrating for fans because this is not the pathway that Nuggets fans hoped for. Things have struggled with the momentum, with the Denver's inability to figure stuff out. At the end of this last break, I wanted to discuss what the path now has to look like

15:47and Denver finding themselves a little bit. There's a pathway. There is a path. I know nuggets fans want to just write it off, and it protects you a little bit more, protects your feelings a little bit more, that you don't want to get hurt by this team. You don't want to open yourself up to the idea that after all of the struggles that they have had, that they could actually do it. It's just kind of assumed that they can't, but being a fan is about thinking and believing in your team in the best and the worst situations. It's the best and worst outcomes. Sometimes things don't go your way. For this nuggets team, they've burned you a couple of times over the course of this season, especially late, where giving up game winners to Shakeel just Alexander, Luke Adonchich and very high profile national TV games, it isn't fun. It's not a fun situation to be in, but I do think that it's possible for Denver to kind of work it back. Do I think it's going to happen?

16:50Skeptical. I'm obviously skeptical. It's why the title of the show is about skepticism. What I will say is that for nuggets fans, this has clearly not been a fun year. There have been very few moments where this has actually been an enjoyable experience to see them go through the trials and tribulations because they haven't come out of it on the other side. They're just still stuck in their trials. They're still stuck in their tribulations. That's not how it's supposed to work. That's that you're supposed to go through the ups and downs and then you become stronger on the other side. That's the hero's journey, right? Well, it hasn't been like that for this season, at least not yet. There's a possibility that they break out of it. There's a possibility that they never do. We are still not sure and still not sure what this story is ultimately going to a complot, like how this is going to wrap up. I think that there is a world where the team wins a title.

17:52I think it's fleeting now. I think it's, you're now starting to really see it disappear in real time because the nuggets, if you're not going to build any sort of momentum and consistency throughout the season, even at the end, then it's going to be difficult to have that actual level of belief in the playoffs. I remember asking Cam Johnson in a post-practice presser about belief in and what this team like, do they have that strong belief? He said, yes. Very firm in terms of this team has very strong levels of belief in what they have done. That was 2023. It was three years ago in terms of when they last accomplished going to that highest place. But I do think that this nuggets group, if they can find any little bit of momentum, things

18:52go their way, the ball bounces their way a couple times, and they create their own luck a little bit, and you can just enjoy that moment. The pressure becomes a little bit lessened. The pressure becomes a little bit easier because right now, it just feels like pressure is just very tight. It's forcing everybody to be really stressed about the situation. And nuggets fans have felt it very much. Clearly, this has not been a very, I did not think, I don't think nuggets fans really thought that this was going to go the way that it has. But the story isn't over yet. It's just not there. I'm hopeful for nuggets fans that you can see something positive over the course of these final 12 games. There's 12 games left. I think Denver has what three road games remaining if I'm not mistaken. Let me check that and confirm. Yeah, three road games remaining. We've got two home games, then one road game.

19:54You've got three home games, then one road game. You've got four home games and one road game at the very end. Denver's going to see a lot to end this season in terms of whether this team is going to be able to build up some momentum. They've got plenty of opportunities to do so. Toronto's coming to town tonight. We'll talk about that game in the next segment, but then it's Portland. Then the next home games are Dallas, Utah, and Golden State, not exactly murderers row. Then they've got a couple days off. They go on the road. They've got another couple days off, and then they've got San Antonio, Portland, Memphis, and Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City by that point, as I've talked about, game 81, second to last game of the season, I'd be shocked if they played anybody. This might be the toughest home game remaining against Toronto. It's possible. If it's actually going to be, maybe there's a, is there a back-to-back remaining? There is. There's a second out of a back-to-back where they come home next week against the Dallas

20:57Mavericks, but in theory, that should be a game that you win if you're serious about and can block in and do the things you're supposed to do. We'll find out. We'll find out if Denver can take advantage of the fact that their schedule does get extremely easier. They thought it was going to get easier with the level of competition against Memphis, but they were gassed. They were tired, and that clearly did not show itself in force, but can the nuggets develop some momentum? Could they just win, like, those nine home games? If you did, that would be crazy, like that would be a wild thing, but it's not that. It shouldn't be that crazy. It's not that wild to think about. That Denver would just take care of business at home. If they could do that, I think nuggets fans would feel a lot better. I think everybody is assuming that it won't happen at this point. If Denver can change your minds, they can figure it out.

21:57They can do some things in a positive way, and then bring some of that momentum into a playoff environment. All bets are off at that point, because the nuggets don't need to see a lot. They know who they are. They're a veteran team. Have a lot of capability, and we'll put their guys into a better position in a playoff environment. And then at that point, it's just, do you believe in Jamal Murray, Nikolay Oka, Aaron Gordon, and the mix that they have around them? And if you do, then, like I said, all bets are off at that point. Let's discuss a little bit this Nuggets Raptors matchup tonight. From a standing perspective, as I mentioned, Denver is the sixth seed right now. They are one game back of the Houston Rockets. It's a big deal. They'd like to stay ahead of the Phoenix Sons who have lost four games in a row themselves, and have given Denver a little bit of a reprieve here, with Denver not necessarily taking care of their own business. Sons have lost a lot of games. Clippers are probably not going to be able to catch Denver. They are eight games back of Denver in the eighth seed. The Sons are really the team that you have to watch out for in the standings. But if Denver can just take care of business at home, I do not think that they're falling into the plane. If they do, then things have gone seriously, seriously wrong. On the other side, Toronto 39 and 29,

26:03they are just a couple losses back of the Cleveland Cavaliers for the foreseed. They would obviously like to be in a home court advantage scenario. So they're going to approach this one with the opportunity to try to get it done. I'm not sure whether they will bring great stuff tonight, but Toronto is a team that if you have a significant belief in just good players being in a situation where they can be successful, this is not a bad situation for Toronto. They were just in Chicago. They had a day off in another in Denver. They continue on with the rest of their road trip after this in Phoenix and Utah. So this is a relatively early part. They also got the Clippers as well. They've got a road trip and so this is a part of it. They're going to have to really lock in at this point, but I don't know whether they're going to be in a good position or not. Matt Moore, as I mentioned, has put together some amazing scouting reports,

27:04basically every single game on every day or club for Nuggets fans. It has its amazing content. I'm not going to share the entire thing with you because that would be ridiculous. You should obviously go check out the every day or club. But I will check in and show you some tidbits or at least tell you about some tidbits. Call and Murray Boyle's for Toronto is still is doubtful for this game. He's one of those athletic, versatile types that Toronto has always valued and always put in a really good position. But he started the last time if I recall. I believe Denver started Jonas Valentinus in that game on New Year's Eve and Colin Murray Boyle started in place of Yaka Pertle. But Murray Boyle's out and Pertle is back. So Yokits will be going up against Pertle. The last couple of times that those guys have gone at each other, Pertle's a guy that I think will score. He will score in this case. And if Yokits is not careful, he has to be doing a decent job at contesting those hook shots,

28:09contesting those floaters, pressing Pertle out as far as it can. Because Pertle's one of those guys, he hasn't exactly had a good year for Toronto, actually had a relatively subpar year. But he shoots nearly 70% from the field. If you give him that opportunity, he's going to take it. So Denver has to be really good in this situation. Yokits has to be better, certainly defensively, certainly offensively than he was in this last game when he had 10 turnovers. So as Matt points out here, Toronto fans have been frustrated with both an inability to beat good teams and a number of late game collapses. Sound familiar? They have nine double digit collapses. Denver has 13, which is really bad. Denver has had a lot of collapses themselves. But what it says is that if Toronto is up, they still like are not like Denver would not fully be in the gutter in that case. So if Toronto goes up, Denver still has an opportunity to come back.

29:10Toronto's got great athletes on the perimeter. Jamal Shed is a great defensive player. Jacobi Walters, somebody who's young that they're figuring out, they've got other guys who can really be helpful in their situation. Emanuel quickly is going to be a potential high level scorer for them. Brandon Ingram is one of the keys in terms of trying to stop them as much as possible. But the one thing that Denver can really benefit from with the team weaknesses that Toronto has is they're not great catch and shoot teams. They do not take a lot of threes. They're pretty poor in terms of their efficiency. Denver's going to be able to pack the paint in this one. They have to give good contests like they can't just allow those guys to spot up and take wide open shots. Like that would be ridiculous. But they can still prioritize protecting the paint. If they don't protect the paint. If they don't protect offensive rebounding or defensive rebounding, this Toronto team will get them. Scotty Barnes, extremely good athlete.

30:12RJ Barrett's really good in transition as well. Somebody that you have to disrupt because of his size and skill level. So there's plenty of options there. Sandra Mamekelish-Vili, who I have loved if you are familiar with my work, you'll know that I really liked Sandra Mamekelish-Vili as an option for the nuggets in the off season. Yeah, for the Raptors, he's averaging 10.8 points per game in 22 minutes. He's been a great bench five for them. Somebody who can space the floor and give a lot of good spacing and scoring opportunities. He's a really capable player. Somebody that if the nuggets bench is going to be a weakness, that would probably be one of the reasons why. So Jonas Valentino's having to contest out on Sandra Mamekelish-Vili. Denver has to figure out that potential balance there. Because I do think that they should try to have Jonas put a lot of pressure on an undersized Raptors team.

31:14But the Raptors force a lot of turnovers. That's one thing that Matt has here as well. They do a really good job with their perimeter defense. They do a really good job in forcing turnovers. They are fifth and turnover rates. They are also number two in isolation turnover rates. So if Denver is isolating, whether it's post-ups, whether it's perimeter ISOs, Denver's got to be smart. Jamal Murray's got to be smart. Jonas Valentino's has to be strong with the ball. They are going to do everything that can the Raptors will to get into Denver to disrupt them. But they will foul. Like that's one thing that Denver is going to have to benefit from. So we're going to see, I'm not sure what kind of effort Denver's going to bring. What I do know is that Aaron Gordon's going to be back. He's not on the injury report. Peyton Watson is out. But he's the only guy that's out. Other than the Geely guys, including DeRon Holmes. DeRon Holmes has been assigned to the Geely again. I don't think he's going to be a factor for the rest of the year for Denver. But if you're Denver is one you got to get. You had a bad loss in Memphis despite the fact that it was a tough schedule spot.

32:19And that it was a second out of a back-to-back. Who cares? Like you missed it. You screwed it up. And now you got to recover. So we'll see what they can provide. This Raptors team is good. They're not great. They are basically like Denver is closer to their tier than I think people would hope for. At this point, like certainly Denver is closer to Toronto than they are to O.K.C. and San Antonio at this point. Not just from a record standpoint, but from just a talent and a connective standpoint. So Denver's got to figure some stuff out. Can the Raptors win this game? Of course, absolutely. Raptors are pretty good on the road. Nuggets aren't very good at home. But Denver should have their full starting lineup back, which is of course a boon. It's of course something that they should really benefit from. And we'll find out. We'll find out what they provide. But if you're a Nuggets fan, this is where it starts again. Like you got to just reset. Got to like stop looking in the past. Yes, the Nuggets have struggled and they have screwed up a couple of things. But now you are on the move up and sort of the pivot from what has been

33:24the last 70 games. Now, you just have to reset your brain, I think. This Nuggets team, I think, has to also do a little bit of a reset. Find some momentum, find some joy, enjoy the game, enjoy the situation, and then hopefully just execute. Like, don't think about what happened in the previous games. Don't think about what happened in previous situations. Just go win this one. And so we'll see what they can. All right. Everybody, that is going to do it for this episode of Locked On Nuggets.
