About this episode

Lewis is back to report on the unfortunate headline of the week, Leon Draisaitl's regular-season-ending lower body injury. Matt Savoie looks to benefit, but bad for all members of Oilers Nation, fantasy and otherwise. Then it's on to the wide-ranging implications of the Penguins' 7-2 smackdown of Colorado, outbursts from Karlsson, McMann, and Coyle, and the continued success of Goncalves and Wood off the wire. After a flurry of injury and outjury news, the show finishes with red-hot low-ownership options in Patrick Kane and Frank Nazar.

Players discussed include Draisaitl, Savoie, McDavid, Malkin, Karlsson, Rust, Mantha, Chinakhov, Rakell, Wedgewood, Blackwood, McMann, Garland, Coyle, Marchment, Cole Hutson, Wood, Goncalves, Pettersson, Dach, Ekman-Larsson, Wennberg, Orlov, Tuch, Samuelsson, Sanderson, Rantanen, Pionk, Nazar, P Kane, Larkin, and more!

What's up, champs. Welcome to another episode of the short shifts fantasy hockey podcast brought to you by keeping Carlson. I'm your host Lewis Ezekiel joining you here on this fine, fine Tuesday evening. Hopefully many of you are involved in your fantasy hockey playoffs this week for those playing in the keeping Carlson ultimate patron fantasy league. Good luck whether you are in the playoffs in the consolation bracket. Make sure that you are doing all you can to win because your games have serious implications for your tier next year. Don't forget there are players who you know we always have some attrition among our GM.

So you've always got a chance to move up as long as you finish as best you can. Really happy to come at you if you are in the playoffs right now in whatever league you are in. I hope it's going well for you if you're getting ready to start next week wishing you the best there as well. But let's get right to the biggest story of the day and that of course is the injury to Leon dry side all Aussie wise black may have never bitten the head off a bat. But he is the prince of darkness to Euler's fans today after he hit dry side all after dry had just about three minutes of ice time. He left the game and is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season after sustaining a lower body injury on that hit. Obviously this is one of those injuries that is primarily going to have a negative effect on the whole team. You know bad for anyone who shares the ice with dry side all at any time. Matt Savoy may be the big winner he moved up to left wing with McDavid and Hyman on a team that is now kind of a one line team.

He also joined them on power play one. It's probably the only winner although McDavid did really dish last year during a four game period where he wasn't injured and dry side was remember they both had some time in and out of the lineup. Late last season but he managed ten assists and put on a fair number of shots as well although he didn't convert. So it could be potentially an opportunity for McDavid to step things up a little bit he's going to have to I suppose if the Euler's want to stay ahead in the playoff hunt. They are currently tied three three with the sharks it's about ten forty five on Tuesday night same Patrick's day by the way so anyone out celebrating hope you had a good time. Hopefully my voice is not causing any ringing in your head this morning. Speaking to folks associated with maybe a ringing in the head a bad boy of getting malkin was back with a vengeance in a big win for the penguins. He scored two goals had a power play assist played power play one and about sixteen minutes in his return in a seven to two shell lacking of Colorado.

Other notable penguin scores included Eric Carlson who had a goal and assist four shots. He is on a nice little hot streak I was going to bring him up towards the end but I'll mention him now fourteen points in his last eleven games really nice work for Carlson. If you held him through that rough patch to start the year as I did not he is rewarding you now. Brian Russ had a goal and an assist in three shots Anthony Manta scored on his only shot and both Chinacov and Raquel had an assist and a shot on goal. Chinacov scoring for those folks who picked him up for the Monday Wednesday to start the week I remember he was mentioned on the mega show. We also saw a new acquisition Elmer Soderblom registering a goal and an assist with one shot. So nice work there for the former Red Wing a tough night for both Colorado goalies which would allowed three goals on five shots before being pulled. And Blackwood was not much better unfortunately for those folks who might have left him in a starting slot he gave up four goals on fifteen shots.

Coach Bednar recently said that whichever goalie gave them the best chance to win would be their starting goalie and would be relied on and given the majority of the starts. It seemed clearly to be Wedgewood who had five wins and four quality starts in his five games previous to Monday night stinker. Blackwood meanwhile had a sub eight fifty save percentage in three of the last four games he's appeared in although that does include last night's game where he maybe deserves a bit of a break for going in cold. You know goalies of course very unpredictable but for my money I think Wedgewood will maintain his lead because even if he was bad last night he's had a better consistent record more recently. But he really can't afford another disaster like Tuesday or else we might find ourselves pretty easily in a fifty fifty situation or even giving Blackwood a chance to start in his place. The mega show on Monday also mentioned one of my favorite players of the season I have been enjoying being a Bobby McMahon owner.

Ever so much and certainly since he made the move over to Seattle he helped secure me a spot in the keeping cars and ultimate patron fantasy league playoffs. So I very much appreciate him for that he is now up to three goals to assist in his two games as a Kraken the Tuesday night game just started so unfortunately I can't tell you much about what's going on there maybe by the end if I check some scores mid mid record here. But he's been filling in online one he's been producing on the second power play he's giving you the hits and shots that you expected from him certainly a bit of a download in the quality of the line mates you know at least you know from name value. At least when he was up on the top line in Toronto but they're pretty solid and they've been on quite the tear lately and I think importantly for McMahon also is that he's not seeing any of those at you know the small sample size obviously but he's not seeing any of those twelve to fourteen minute games.

Now that would start to strike whenever Toronto wanted to fuss with the lines he said eighteen and nineteen minutes so far and he hasn't really given any indication that he should be skating any less what's great about those extra minutes is that you really are relying on McMahon to be a floor guy who's going to give you shots and hits and the more time he has on ice the more opportunity he has to put those together you know he's not going to score three goals on every eight shots the rest of the way. But I think he could be a really useful player for you to provide you a strong reliable floor of peripherals a sixty-ish point pace and be kind of like a Tom Wilson light version from when we saw Wilson really filling the stat sheet early in the year and getting tons and tons of minutes probably won't be playing like twenty two twenty three I can't imagine but you know this is this is Seattle we are a little more egalitarian over there but I really like him in this spot. And I think if you're looking for a streamer if you're in a shallower league or if he hasn't been snapped up yet I think McMahon could be a really good opportunity if he's going to continue to get you know seventeen plus minutes a night.

Another player a pair of players actually that I mentioned last week in our in for some discussion here today because Tuesday night was a big night for Charlie Coil he had a goal in three assists one goal one assist on the power play as they handled care a line up for him. Last week I told you I thought Connor Garland and his four goals on nine shots was a nice intro to a new team. But I felt like the production was a mirage not just you know obviously four goals on nine shots but kind of the shooting and scoring more generally I said I didn't think that was going to continue and I mentioned Coil definitely as the preferred option. Coil did not score the rest of the week but hopefully you saw those big minutes 18 21 18 in his last three games that power play one time and you stayed the course and held on to him for that huge game Tuesday night. Garland has seen his minutes stay low 15 to 12 minutes to 11 minutes in his last three games although that 15 minutes was a boost for what he had seen including in those two goal games.

But just not a ton of usage the shooting is mostly evaporated and obviously that has taken the scoring with it. So yeah definitely obviously Coil is your guy I think Garland you can go ahead and let go he's had his big intro but I think the scoring will be pretty sporadic from this point forward. Pretty confident we've seen the best of Connor Garland this season already. Should add that Mason Marchment who Brian and Elon recommended for anyone with room on the busier days scored from the power play as well so nice work if you listen to the mega show and snatched up Mason Marchment. And it was another rough outing for Brandon Bussey who gave up five goals on 35 shots that was his third game with a sub 850 save percentage in the last four and those numbers are tough. 818 800 even he knows one game above at 875 against Saint Louis and was back to 833 against Columbus.

So Bussey has hit a bit of a wall a really great start obviously hugely important to the season for Carolina but right now he looks a little lost Anderson has been a bit more steady but steady Freddie Anderson is not a phrase that should be coming out of anyone's mouth. Here in the year 2026 alright well we are going to take ourselves a quick little break we will see you on the other side you're listening to short shifts. I feel like the field is still kind of wide open I wonder if someone could still win it so broken is next in the list if you have an idea of who you think is going to win the Vesna take a look at Draft King sports book by the way new customers bet just $5 if your bet wins you'll get $300 bonus bets instantly download the Draft King sports book app and use code THPM that's code THPM to turn 5 bucks into 300 bonus bets if your bet wins in partnership with Draft Kings the crown is yours gambling problem call 1 800 gambler New York all 877 8 hope NY or text hope NY Connecticut call 8887897

e-line mentioned you could be even better than lane time will tell obviously but exciting news for coal and the Hudson's coach carbonate did not commit to putting coal in the lineup on Wednesday but it should be a good sign that he was getting power play to reps so you know maybe this is just a coach kind of playing coy here I imagine that if he continues to get those power play reps on Wednesday that's a pretty good sign that he'll be in so dynasty GM look to get him in your lineup tomorrow if Washington does ice him and an exciting day for the prospect folks who will maybe get to see their first look at coal Hudson in the NHL another couple players mentioned on the mega show Matthew wood and gauge gun solvice both with goals on Tuesday so if you grabbed either of those guys you have been rewarded Tampa Bay is only in the first period so obviously there could be more coming there and it looks like Nashville got past Winnipeg with some help from that Matthew wood goal so quite the hot streak for Matthew wood and nice to see gauge hitting the score sheet as well I know that's exciting news for my co-host Ryan who picked him up and anyone else who added him to the lineup

credit to Elias Patterson off the Schneid with two goals Tuesday on two shots in the first period his first goals since January 13th I will not I will try not to wallow too much in the fact that it is against me I suppose I got all last week with him doing very little against the same team so I'm going back to back against this opponent so you know I guess I should take what I could get that he was pretty crummy last weekend for many of the weeks before I will roll with the punches here but that is against Florida and Florida has kind of been mail it in a bit recently I guess we can jump over to them because they did have some news as Seth Jones has made his return first game since the winner classic he was very effective prior to his injury he had a power play goal and four assists three of them on the power play in the five games before leaving after just three minutes on the ice against the Rangers on January 2nd but it should be noted the team is coming back to is not a ton like the one that he left

like I said Florida has been really rough lately you know they are eliminated from contention we know that they are not going to three feet and you know I imagine they are quite tired from all the hockey that they have played over the last few years but yeah not a team that I would really be running to grab anyone on especially not a goalie as it has been very rough in a lot of these recent games for those Florida goalies today Rodriguez and lose to Ryan and who were top line last game were scratches Tuesday so it's hard to feel super confident about Jones having a successful return that game is three one Vancouver after one period so not the outcome certainly that anyone hoping for good things from Florida would want to see if you've been holding bark of in the hope that he'll return I know that you know he started skating a while ago and a lot of people left to grab him if they had an extra move and add up to the IR don't sacrifice anything to hold him any longer if your IR is starting to get crowded it's hard to see why you'd risk an NHL game with nothing to play for when you could rehab over the summer and get the strongest start as possible next year.

A couple other injuries among the top six of a couple teams Adrian Kempay was out Monday he tried to give it a go during warmups he was unable to play so he is listed as day to day for right now obviously Kempay very important for the Kings chances moving forward and very important I imagine for your fantasy teams in his absence we did see a nice four to one win for LA against the Rangers in our Tammy panorons return to Madison Square Garden so that was nice but otherwise you know for Kempay owners hopefully he will be back soon the fact that he tried to give it a go in warmups I think is probably a good sign jumping over to Montreal Kirby doc is going to be out two to four weeks with an upper body injury so that is unfortunate for him as he has obviously been in and out of the lineup quite a lot out more frequently than in a couple more quick in and out notes Oliver Eckman Larson was back from adding the new baby to the family he played in the 3-1 loss that Toronto suffered to the Islanders nice work from Cal and Richie in that game by the way Braden Shen also had a power played goal Richie might be a guy to take a look at it

Shen obviously seeing some nice production with a more consistent power play time so that's nice to see as well making good use of that trade Alex Wenberg was back from the minor injury that held him out on Sunday he has a power play assist on Tuesday also maybe of note for San Jose obviously they don't have the best schedule this week and the you know power play quarterback has not exactly been a position that's been great but I do want to mention that Dimitri Orlov did have a goal and an assist today the goal on a power play the assist on key for sure woods 21st of the season he's fitting in really nicely in San Jose so that's good news for Wenberg to be back in the action obviously his exposure to that top power play as far in a way the most important thing about his deployment so as long as he has it it might be worth rostering him but again he's a center only guy Tuesday Thursday Saturday this week at least those are not as busy as some of the recent week so you may still be able to squeeze him in I'm looking to get him back into my lineup on Saturday where I've got a spot for him

Alex Tuck is sick and won't suit up for Buffalo on Tuesday night they have a one nothing lead after a period Matias Samison is back for them so that's good news you know that is a guy who's been very productive despite not the greatest deployment so another guy that I'm up against so I hope he avoids the score sheet for a while longer some guys who are still a little bit of a ways off Jake Sanderson is expected to start skating next week so you know you're hoping to get him back at some point during your fantasy playoffs Nico Ranton is going to skate this week but they said he is 10 to 14 days away from any possible return so we're looking at later in the playoffs if you're going to be able to get Ranton and back Neil Pionk came along on the Juts road trip so he might play before that wraps up so that'll be another guy to keep an eye on obviously Morrissey has been the man in Winnipeg on the blue line but Pionk has been you know guy who in the past has been able to be pretty productive

want to leave you with a couple hot streaks before we're on our way out we don't worry about cold streaks during this time of year because if someone is on a cold streak you replace them and toss in someone who is doing better we'll start with the more widely owned player Patrick Kane 31% rostered on Yahoo but that's not as high as it probably should be especially with how he's been playing recently three goals for assists 18 shots in the last six games on power play one playing 18 to 20 minutes a night for a team that is pretty desperate for wins obviously not having Dylan Larkin out there for them is a downgrade across the centers that are available but Kane has been doing what he can to put the team on his back those shots are really nice to see so that's a guy who should be more widely owned than 31% as we head into the playoffs another hot player more widely available Frank Nazar who is 17% owned on Yahoo has four goals and five assists 13 shots in his last seven games

so not shooting as much as Kane which may make you nervous especially if you're like Elon and shots are your favorite thing there is but he is getting top power play time teams with nothing to lose are pretty fun this time of year I think they let loose a little bit they want to see what their players can do those playoff teams tend to get more conservative you might start seeing some key players getting benched so you know unlike Kane's situation where the center depth has been tested Nazar's you know on that second line and has sort of what you would expect in terms of his Chicago teammates so yeah not as much shooting but more scoring lately and again big minutes power play one both those guys could be really nice options to fill in for you if you've got the space over the remainder of this week and that brings us to the end of this show thank you so much for joining me if you enjoyed the show please consider joining the keeping Carlson Patreon group at keeping Carlson dot com slash patron were super supporters receive ad free episodes
