Steve Spagnola could have joined us in about 20 minutes, looking forward to that very excited for that friend of the show Spags as the NFL season has the NFL season kicked off last night. What a dreadful game. I know we have winners and losers to me. They were just losers on that field last night. That was a dreadful, terrible, awful way to start the NFL season. It is sick that we had to wait months for football to come back only to get a drew lock game within five minutes into the regular season. He's always there drew lock like Mikey, if I asked you before the game,

3:06and you don't know because who knows who's back, you know, who is backing up who and where they're playing. But if I asked you who Seattle's backup, if I asked you five years from now, who is Seattle's backup, your answer is going to be drew lock, right? I'm not sure that I could name ever another Seattle backup. Like I think drew lock backup, Matt Hasselback. Right. There's the guy that parlayed his one or two stars into a monster contract. I can't remember who that was. Matt Flynn. Oh, yeah, Flynn. Did they draft Jaylen Milroy for this exact like situation? Like if they're starting quarterback, it's hurt. You draft Jaylen Milroy out of Alabama because of the potential that he has. Yeah, the problem is they've seen that potential. It's not good enough, which is why they continue to try to out drew lock. It's going to be interesting to see how long Sam Darnel's out for. Because if you the Seahawks, you're not winning anything. I know the team's good, defense is good, supporting cast good, but you're not going to win a single thing with drew lock, right? And as we record this, Sam Darnel, they believe they,

4:10quote, dodged a bullet, meaning he probably didn't break his hip, but he will be out. It sounds like for at least a little bit of time. Drake May was pretty bad, huh? I was rooting for your boy, Mac Collins, man. On that final drive, he kept looking for Mac, kept looking for Mac, looked for him in the end zone on that final play and through an interception. That was, you can't do that. You're in field goal range already. You can't do that. At the very least, you have to tie up the game and take it to overtook. That's a mistake that like 97% of quarterbacks know you cannot make in that situation. And Drake May unfortunately just trusted his arm a little bit too much to throw that off his back foot fading away when he had overtime, all but guaranteed. Last three drives, INT, INT, INT, how about that? Drake May was throwing the ball at the end like he's a gunslinger and he's not. Like you're not bread far like your game manager. Go look at Sam Darnal, take notes in what he does and try and be that only better.

5:10And Drew Locke, was that really a touchdown pass by the way? I mean, it was like a little bubble screen to to J, to JSN. I'm going to be like the Patriots post game guy. We'll get to that sound in a second. That wasn't a touchdown pass. That was Jackson being the best wide receiver at the NFL. Drew Locke's going to get credit for that too, man. It's crazy. It's not a touchdown pass. In my personal record book, I'm just saying that was not a touchdown pass. He handed the ball off. Wasn't a bubble screen. It was a three yard curl. It was it was a it was a go to the sticks, pick up the fourth down on a fourth and three. I'm going to hit you at four yards and he made somebody made a couple of people miss. Do you guys start to wonder here? Last five games from May seven touchdowns, 11 turnovers, 24 sacks taken. You guys starting to question Drake May a little bit, perhaps? Maybe, maybe not. I'm afraid we've crowned Drake May a little too early. Did we? I'm getting a little worried that we crowned him a little too early.

6:12We tend to do that. Let's get to winners and losers here. My first winner from this game. I don't know if that game deserves this music. Or this many winners and losers. It's back. I said they were just losers. My first winner. Yes. We mentioned him. Drew Locke because he's now the early front runner to win the 2026 Flody award for keeping his team afloat. If Sam Darnel is going to miss an extended, extended amount of time. Yes. If the Sioux ox could stay and play off contention, Drew Locke floaty. Through exactly one game and just one game. Not one week, just one game. He is in the driver's seat to win a floaty this year. He's a word to lose. Flody is a weird way to say MVP. Yeah. Well, perhaps. Although that would be Jackson Smith and Jigba. All right. My first winner is your boy, Mac Collins.

7:12Yeah. Because nobody wants Mac Collins. Like when you're doing free agency and you're filling out your wish list and all that, nobody wants Mac Collins. Mac Collins isn't going to make you excited. But when you need somebody, when you need somebody on that third and 23 to be at the 24 yards, to be 24 yards down the field, Mac Collins is your boy. Taylor, he's exactly what you need when you need it. Yep. You peed it out there at the end. I don't know what happened to you. But I got crossed up. I was just so happy football was back. Well, what are you saying exactly on Mac Collins? Nobody wants him, but he's always there. Yeah, nobody wants him, but he's exactly what you need. Right. Four catches, 51 yards. He was in the end zone last night. May was trying to get him the ball was intercepted. But to Mikey's point, Mikey's point, every time Mac Collins hits free agency, the contract is like one year, $4 million, two years, $8 million. It's always a one year kind of proof of deal.

8:13And then he has the same season almost every time. It's like 30 to 40 catches. Most of them are going to be for first downs. And probably like we're topping out at like 400, 500 yards max. But it's a big 500 yards. And I will say this about Mac on that interception, the ball was trying to go to him. He gave the most half-hearted. He was out of bounds, knowing full well that the both feet were in bounds. But he gave the he was out. Yes, he wasn't. Who is Boston blaming today? Is it Drake May? Is it like Rae Bull or Diana Rossini? It's our only Drake May today. You don't think Rossini's catching any heat? I was text there last night. I hope the Patriots lose so everyone blames you. My next loser or my first loser I guess. Yes. Pearl James Mike McCready's National Anthem. Oh, I missed it. What happened? First game of the season. I love McCready. But the first game of the season, I don't need a guitar solo national anthem.

9:13Give me some lyrics. Right. Give me Eddie Vetter. I mean. I mean. So it's not it's not Mike McCready. That's the loser. It's the decision to have Mike. 10:14If he could have, he would have. Is what you're saying? No, I think they told him. This is exactly what we want you to do. Right. And he did it. And he did it. Good. It's just not what you want. I could tell you that any figure spot there. Any national anthem for any game at any time without the words. I don't need it. I don't want it. I want the words. Respect the anthem. Don't do it with an electric guitar. You want to have that in the background fine. But someone's saying, oh, say can you see? That's exactly what I'm saying. That's what we're talking about here. Anybody who had any kind of parlay bet last night because AJ Brown going down, Sam Darnal going down, all of your bets. They're all gone. You didn't know. There's no way that nobody had one of those two guys

11:17in your parlay bet. And the fact that they both went down so early in the game, you lost all your parlay. That was the worst possible scenario for AJ Brown, right? I mean, Drake may had him wide open early in the game before the injury and he under threw him. Jalen Hertz would have made that pass. I really wish we would stop rewarding quarterbacks for under thrown passes with pass interference penalties to bail them out. Right. Like he had AJ Brown completely wide open on that. And he under threw it. Yes. Under threw it. AJ Brown tries to come back to the ball. Josh Job just plays AJ Brown, not knowing that he's going to come back to the ball. And then it's it winds up being a 35 40 yard penalty. It's ridiculous. You think AJ was thinking as that ball was in the air, man, I came here so I could have a quarterback who could reach me downfield. Which is what Drake Mays has been known for in his NFL career. And yesterday he was terrible on passes of 20 plus yards downfield. And you could tell Drake May felt bad about it. Even while getting the PI penalty and getting the ball at the two yard line essentially they score a touchdown,

12:18Drake May felt terrible that he under threw AJ Brown in that spot. He was wide open. He felt terrible in that situation because he knows AJ Brown is like, man, this is going to become a thing in like three weeks. When AJ Brown is reading the book at the band, he could train when AJ Brown is reading a book on the sideline. People are going to come back to this under thrown pass. Yes. Well, I mean, maybe not because he's hurt. And we'll see if he's even going to be playing in three weeks. Weird gameless night. Darnled out. AJ Brown out. Strange game. Bad game. Anyway, who's up? Taylor's up. Uh, I'll go with another loser here. Romeo Dobbs. Yeah, terrible. Patriots offseason acquisition. Four years, $68 million. And what does he do in his Patriot debut? Zero catches. And his drop in the fourth quarter led to that Drake May second interception where probably cost them about 30 yards and field position, put Drake May in a bad spot third and 15.

13:19And Drake may kind of takes a bad situation and makes it even worse with that interception. Yeah. Starting to wonder about Drake May, I have to be honest. I'm sorry. I'm wondering about Romeo Dobbs. I don't care about Romeo Dobbs. It's all about the quarterback. If the quarterback's good, the team is good. And the quarterback was Lazy last night and has been Lazy for the last several games. This is why you have to build through the draft and not through free agency. Because players like Romeo Dobbs get four years, $68 million. And that's what you get for them. There's a reason that that the Packers were like, no, you got ahead. That's why you build through the draft. Yeah. I'll give you a winner here. Yeah, go ahead. Jadarian Price. You get scoop. That guy's good. He can't scoop. That guy's good. Yeah, 10 rushes. He was a backup to Jeremiah Love at Notre Dame. He was a backup running back there. And a first round pick for the Seattle Seahawks. 10 carries 52 yards. Didn't give him the ball enough.

14:20It feels like we haven't talked enough about the fact that Notre Dame had the first two running backs picked in the NFL giraffe. Yes. In the first round. Yes, it's like Miami back in the day where Frank Gore was a third string running back. Yeah. Yeah. Guys got like 13,000 yards in the NFL. Three yards at a time. I have one more winner here. Cooper Cup. Oh, big winner still hasn't. Well, he spots a little bit. Yes, but he can find it when he needs it. He can find it when he needs it. When you need a big catch in Seattle, yes, you have JSN. Yes, you have price at the backfield. But all reliable. It's Cooper Cup every time. 15:21Bad one. All right, one more loser. All right, go ahead. Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin is not good at the TV thing. You know what? Mike Tomlin might be a hell of a head coach. Yeah. But Mike Tomlin, first off, NBC already has the role of awkward former coach locked up with Jason Garrick. We don't need to on a broadcast, okay? But Mike Tomlin trying to talk about this game. We have some sound to this. Yeah. Dude, you got to know the players. All right, so the same man and JNS. I think they got to deliver it. JSN, I'm not going to let you do it again. Yeah, they got to do it. I'm not going to let you do it again. What? JSN. JSN. You said JNS. I appreciate it. I think those two are going to do it. Uh-huh. Sometimes you have to, oh, right. Sometimes you have to. You know, because usually this is the day coaches always talk in numbers. They're not having to say names. All right. I got you coach. I made the same mistakes. So I cannot criticize him. Go ahead. Nobody says his name like you do, dude. You're perfect at actually saying his name.

16:23Yes, when I, when I have to say JSN. When I put it to initials, though, it becomes more difficult. Oddly. Jackson Smith and Jigby could say I could see getting JSN wrong. I just did it earlier. JNS is weird. Yeah. JSN works. JNS is a department store. I don't think my top. I don't think my top one has to take being a loser for for the broadcast that hard because all your guys fan fiction has him coming back next year to be the Jetshead coach. 17:24Even Mike Tomlin. But they hired him because he's such a great speaker. I mean, Chris Sims isn't doing that anymore. Tony Dungee not doing it anymore because they wanted Mike Tomlin. Mikey, the point you made though, it's easy for Tomlin to be better on these broadcasts because of Jason Garrett being there. Every time Jason Garrett's on my screen and Jason Garrett's talking, yeah, for some reason I feel uncomfortable. Yeah, I feel uncomfortable. Like I didn't ask for any of this. And Jason Garrett's just staring at me so weirdly. I'd say I'll put it on the pole. I'd still got 790 on X. Does Jason Garrett on your television make you uncomfortable? The feeling I get when Jason Garrett's on my television is the same feeling I get when someone stands too close to me at a urinal. Back up, move. What is he giving off, Jason Garrett? I have an excuse. I don't know. I just get like cold like a cold like shrug over my body every time he comes on the screen. I'm like, oh, do you feel like he's not deserving of trying to teach you

18:24about what's going on in the field? Like he's Jason Garrett. No, like the best way I think I could describe it off the top of my head. Yeah, it feels like an aliens inside Jason Garrett's body pretending to be a normal human. Like that's the feeling I get from him. Like a men and women. Be normal. Smile. And he just never stopped. Like Jason Garrett gets back to the hotel after a long night and just unzips his human skin. Put it on the pole. And Jason Garrett get back to the hotel at night and unzip his human skin. Haha. I agree. It's such a perfect description because like I can't think of another way to describe it. It's right up on the top of the neck, right? You just. Yeah. Yeah. It's a small little alien just pops out and like stretches arm like what a day. Yeah, fool them again. You have a Garrett has to feel good today because Tom was so bad, right? I mean, star of the show.

I think part of what's weird is he knows he's going to coach again. It's like he shouldn't be doing this. He shouldn't be a member of the media. A JSN Garrett, there's a funnality to JSN Garrett becoming a media member.

20:26No one is ever going to hire JSN Garrett again to do anything coaching wise. Mike Tomlund's there for, you know, a cup of coffee and then he's gone and he's wondering if John Harba is looking at him cross-eyed like, hey, what are you doing in a seat interviewing me? You know? The Tomlund Harbaugh sit down, felt like it's two rivals, even though they're not in the same spot anymore. It's the Ravens coach. It's the Steelers coach and it felt like almost like a Texas Western shootout where both of them had like their, their hands on their guns just ready to draw. Let's get to this before we get to Spags. The Patriots post game host, I can't imagine what this post game was like. Go ahead, Taylor. So this is Mark Dondero, the post of the Patriots post game on 98.5, the sports hub. And he was not too fond of Drake May after the game. They tried to hide him all night long with high school plays, with the Zavarian playbook, high school, swing past, little runs, roll out to nowhere,

21:29high school football. The second he had to make NFL plays or throws, he was screwed. He couldn't do it. He made one NFL throw all night that was the Hollins. On one of the third downs that was a little bit deep on an incite nice timing. He made high school plays all night long. That's what happened and he could not step up and that throw to end the game was to Scott. That was incomprehensible and disgusting. To even put the ball with that much air under it in that situation, it was funnily. That was a joke. You cannot do that. He blew this game and he was bad all night. I thought the only thing he produced all night was high school level plays, high school, science class, chemistry. It was awful. Just a reminder, this guy was five points off being the NFL MVP last season trip night. And he took that team to a Super Bowl and made plenty of NFL throws along the way. But that's how you do it. I'm proud of him.

25:34Mikey A. It's a tradition unlike any other. Look who's in the zoom. It is Spag. Steve Smacknoir, the defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs. And Mikey again, he's sitting in front of his draft board. It's a little bit of draft. A little bit of a call. He's got everything up there. Yeah. It's his fantasy league. It's in code. No, you guys have been here. Spags, how was the offseason? How was the summer? What'd you, uh, what'd you in the wife do? I know you went on a golf trip. What else you get into? Yeah, a little Scotland trip. The normal Stu got you know, we did the beach. We were down there in Fort Laudell for a little bit over in the Jersey Shore. But I will tell you this. I don't want anymore. It was way too long this year because you know, with no, right, no playing in the playoffs. You know, in the, yeah, it's just it was way too long. It was time to get going again. I love my time with my family and my wife, but it's good to be back doing ball. I love you guys have been so deep into the playoffs to Super Balls for so long

Like I'm not, I'm not really in the know, uh, Dizz and stuff. So there was a lot of people. I mean, I had to ask a lot of questions. Who's that? You know, uh, because in that in the industry, you know, music industry and entertainment,

27:36entertainment industry, I mean, being as old as I am, two guys. I, there's a lot of them. Oh, I'm young kids. I didn't really know. But everybody was having a good time. That was a, the effort for Travis and Taylor and I, I tell you what I enjoyed most was, there was a bunch of guys that have been, have played for us or been on defense, uh, that we've even, even lost there with other teams now and they were at the wedding and that, that was fun. Like Trent McDuffee, Leo Chanel and we just lost those guys this year. I love those two guys. I know a bunch of other guys that I hadn't seen a long time. So it was kind of a nice little reunion. Uh, Spags, it was reported by Adam Schaefter that, uh, that Behomes is going to start. I'm wondering, uh, what should people expect from Patrick? You see him every day in practice. Your defense goes against him every day in practice. Uh, how does he look? What should people expect? Well, when they, when they name that, is he, is he on, is he going to play on defense? Yeah. Well, we get them, is he going to play safety or corner for some? No, he's going to keep your defense off the field. That's what he's going to do.

28:37He got it. Well, I'll tell you this when, what was remarkable to me was that when we began OTAs back in June and Patrick was standing out there. Now he didn't do all the reps, but when we go to seven on seven and there was no pass rush on him, he was flinging that thing around like he had never had an injury. It was amazing to me that, not short of a period of time, he was doing the things he, that he does. But he's listening, you know, coaches spoken about a lot. Now let I kind of rest on his, um, comments, but Patrick's a remarkable guy in the way he rehabs and trains and he's gotten himself to this point and I'm happy that we're going to be able to play the first game with him. Coach, I'm excited because I was watching the draft and you guys picked Mansour Delaan from, from LSU. What are expectations for him this season? Even though he is a rookie, he feels like somebody that could kind of elevate what you want to do defensively. Also, someone not going back to LSU specs.

29:37Yeah, that's an ongoing saga, isn't it? I'm glad, listen up, the Stu Gantz, I'm glad he's not going back. We worried and followed the sudden he was going back to Baton Rouge. Um, listen, I was really excited when we drafted him. I thought he was kind of like the number one corner in the, in this particular, uh, draft class. He, you know, he had a little bit of a slow beginning. He ran into some injuries at the end of the OTAs. He, uh, had a shoulder injury and we didn't have him for a lot of training camp. But he's played catch up and done a really good job of that. One of the things about when you have new guys, especially in the secondary, is the continuity in the chemistry early. I've been a little rocky. We've had a lot of guys banged up in the secondary, but I'm hopeful for Mansour and what he can do. We, listen, we lost some talented guys last year. Not just in the secondary, but the linebacker level and even a D line. So we're going to need anybody that's coming in here now to step up and, and do some things early.

30:37So we expect him to certainly play and hopefully play well. Spags as a defensive coach as someone who loves D linemen. Uh, when you see Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald together in LA. He's already making faces. Uh, what are your thoughts with that? It seems absurd. You know what I mean? You know what I immediately thought of? Yeah, A, it would be great to have him here, but B. So, uh, Trent McDuffey and Jalen Watson, who are corners for us here that are now with the Rams. I immediately thought about how much better they're going to be. Right. With those guys up there and make, listen, Db's make D lineman look good and D lineman make Db, Db's look good. So, uh, listen, they, they've put together what looks like a really good football team. So see what happens. Spags, you're, you're, you're a mastermind with these defenses. But do you even have to do anything when you have guys like that? Or do you just go, hey, go do something. Just get us the ball back, please. Yeah, you certainly wouldn't have Miles Garrett dropping like we do sometimes with other guys. You want those to get forward all the time, right?

31:41No, listen, it's not, it's kind of nice to have that. Listen, it's hard to get, um, and a talent on one defensive unit, but the Rams have found a way to do it. So we'll see what happens. Spags, do you feel like you've gotten too good as a defensive coordinator? Because I feel like part of that is the chiefs are like, Spags is going to make it work no matter who, what 11 we put out there for. Yeah, it's a, listen, it's an unreasonable expectation. But people do just feel like, hey, Spags, they'll make it work. He's going to die with those blitzes. Well, listen, it's a great compliment, but this, listen, you guys know, you watched enough football, you've been in it long enough that it's about the players. It's really not about the X's. I know, I mean, we've been fortunate. We've had some cerebral guys and we've been able to do something, some things from a defensive standpoint, but you can't do any of that without good football players. We've been lucky to have good players here who have executed like that. To me, it's all about, you know, how the 11 guys work together. We, I mean, we threw a lot at him in training camp. That's typically who, and then we kind of smooth it out and thin it out as we get into the first game.

32:42But it's how the unit works together like, I mean, you guys know this quote, read our back with, you know, and it was a basketball quote, but he'd always say he didn't necessarily need the five best players. He needed the five players that played together the best. Right. If that makes sense. And that's what you really need in football on defense. So you need 11 guys that work well together. And hopefully we can take this crew that we got now and come up a little bit. I just think that with the youth we have, you know, we might, it might be the first quarter of the season, just figuring out what we are going to be. But hopefully in the, in the midst of that, we can find a way to win. Coach, you got your start at UMass as a graduate assistant. When UMass beats Rutgers, what was the Spagnola house like? Did you give out a little football? He loves all things Paul Stain. He does. Yes. God, he's got to accept the Patriots. Yes. Go ahead. I love that. I love that question. Thanks for bringing up Joe Kullin, our D-line coach. Is a UMass grad. He played after I left there, but we were talking about the other day.

33:45That was a great win for them. And then now they're looking because everybody's looking at the schedule now. Because I think they play a couple of teams coming up that maybe hopefully they can win. So it'd be nice to see you ask it off of the start here and maybe go three and all or two and all. That'd be go go minute men, right? Yes. The new Indiana. How about that? What do you think? Yeah, there you go. Are you into the Red Sox season at all? But a great season. I listened. I was a little bummed. I was really good friends with the manager. Core that they let go. But listen, for them, they put together the two months that they had and crank it out and be in the midst of it. I think they don't they have a will they be a wild car team? Yeah, they're in the wild car. Yeah, pretty safe. Wild car team. Yes, he's so in the football. Listen, I think when the Red Sox and the Yankees are playing well in the I think that's good for baseball. I really do dodgers, you know, almost traditional teams. I think it's great. Aspax, how much time have you spent here in the offseason studying Bo-Nex?

34:48Yeah, yeah, a lot. That's why I have excedrin over here on my desk. Because when you watch him, you just get a headache. This guy's I was looking at a tape the other day. I pulled up a Bo-Nex big plate tape and it was it was all his college stuff. The things he's done at Denver. This guy's legit. He's a head-aided defend. I think, you know, what Sean and that offensive staff, what they do now with him is really, really good. You talk about a quarterback that kind of fit in the perfect package for him and the coaching. I think they got it there in Denver and there's going to be a huge challenge for us to right out of the blocks here. All right, it's back. We appreciate the time as always. Good luck this season.
