Welcome to the Busted Open After Dark podcast, I'm your host, Tommy Drummer. Monday Night Raw live from Mexico City had two match of the year candidates. I'm going to start off with Roman Reigns versus Penta for the WWE World Championship. This is the Busted Open podcast. It is everything you wanted to be in a main event of a highly anticipated, highly promoted, and a long journey to get to this match and both men delivered and they delivered big. We saw the recap package of how Penta got to face Roman in this match in Mexico City.

2:01We saw the highlights of it and then we also saw promo packages for Roman and Penta with the high stakes of this match, but also Roman kind of had a character saying he didn't fear. I'm sorry, he respected Penta. He went in like the baby face and he liked his work and he was honorable and respectful and everything that he hates about pro wrestling, you're not that Penta. And Penta was like, man, I acknowledge you Roman, but I'm not afraid of you. And he beat his own brother in what then was a match of the year candidate for the opportunity to face Roman in Mexico. They did an amazing job of telling Penta's story of his humble beginnings with his father

3:02and his father being a vendor and not having a lot of money and his humble beginnings and then traveling from his town to Mexico City to train to be a wrestler and his journey to where and how he got there is such an important thing where both Corey Graves and Joe Testor did a great job of telling that story, the entrance. First off earlier, you see him riding through the streets on a horse with mobs of people that poor horse, kudos to whoever the trainer was as well as the the horse was not spooked at all. And those he had security guards flanking him good job by the security because I wouldn't be anywhere near that horse. I saw a horse kick Terry funk and he was like, yep, that's not good. So coming through the streets, you just look like such a massive, massive star.

4:04Now we get to the entrance and we get to that entrance with that Aztec headdress and then the the pyro and his music. It was such a big fight feel and beloved was Penta. It's everything you want and if you're ever blessed to perform in your hometown, it's different. And every wrestler mostly has great memories and moments and a connection to a lot of cities. But it's just different when you're in your hometown. It really and truly is. I've watched in the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings game and one of the players. He said he had 150 comps because it's the closest where his town, he grew up in Minnesota. He had 150 people come out because the closest he's ever got a chance to have people see him play in the NFL. So think about that for Penta.

5:06He's wrestling in his hometown, his home country, his his families in there. Everybody's rooting for him. He was the biggest baby face of the night. And here comes Roman Reigns and Roman Reigns listen, ever since he's come back and come back. He's the crowd is always split. But a lot of times lately he's just been straight up baby face. He for the first time that was booed and hated looks amazing. Big fight feel continues. Alicia Taylor amazing job with you can feel the tension and the excitement. The stare down. First time I see the stare down like holy crap. Roman Reigns is in the best shape of his life. And you also for the first time noticed how much bigger Roman is than Penta. And that stare down was key. The other part Penta did not back down. He stood his ground and he was ready to fight for his people. The match did not disappoint.

6:08It was Roman Reigns most athletic and best athletic performance. I've seen him in and a long, long time. Both guys can go. But this was more of just a straight up wrestling match. A lot of times Roman he has either interference stuff happens on the floor where they lay out for a long time. He's a great storyteller. This was a different type of Roman Reigns match of course because he's wrestling Penta in Penta's hometown. But think of how many frigging Mexican destroyers that he took. The selling that he did on his arm. Well this match was a master's class. It was pretty darn close to being a perfect match. And Penta has a unique style and a unique moveset. And the other part like I said man they're in Mexico City. You have no clue. Roman doesn't wrestle all the time. When you wrestle in Mexico City in about two minutes in your long start burning.

7:13How much time did they have? About 20, 26 minutes of non-stop action. And that's also their wrestling during commercial breaks. Maybe then because some I got to see some I didn't where they're able to catch their wind if somebody is on the floor doing something but they just went. Tommy on the international feed on Netflix they were wrestling straight through it. Nice. And it just proves what a great champion Roman Reigns is because like I said he doesn't wrestle all the time and he's training somewhere and that is that's just cardio. And that's also cardio running the ropes bumping to keep it going. I've wrestled in Mexico City so many times and you're in your you know back then you would wrestle four times in Mexico. And you're just used to it by then but you still feel it.

8:14You know it's just like whoops yep man the out to but you know they're not doing a whole bunch of live events they have increased them but Roman doesn't do like Roman wasn't the touring champion like during my era being in WWE. So you got to give him such great kudos for his his wind and everybody tonight nobody looked blown up and everybody trained their ass off for tonight. But back to the penta Roman match there was so many matches that I've seen but there are so many moments where I'm sitting there like oh my god they may put the title on penta. I never ever get text messages during matches. I had two different people and then a phone call my phone call was like are you watching this this match is great and then two other people text me and both are like they're going to switch the title tonight. And that it means they made people believe and these are people who are inside the wrestling business they're not you know straight up fans.

9:19They they made you want to will the challenger to win and the champion to lose. Roman was just a straight up heel didn't really do things to cheat. He just had a great athletic main event. Both guys just going at it from the Canadian to sorry I keep saying Canadian destroyer shadow PD Williams the Mexican destroyer. Roll up until the spear man I bit and I was like holy cow like that's it and then the kick outs the kick outs were perfect the referee was perfect that's another thing referees get blown up to and the referees stood their ground during this match as well and like I also say like when Roman having athletic contest there's no ref bumps there's no the whole time I'm after towards the end where he hit the penta driver and Roman kicks out

10:22him and they're both guys are both laid out exhausted. I'm like oh they're going to send Royce keys and OTM 946 they're going to end with this big fight. No we didn't get any of that. We saw a great main event Roman reigns wins it when Roman wins you heard a chorus of booze unlike when dragon Lee lost and you know the champions putting over the challenger Roman just all about Roman different place if this was in New York I think they'd still have that same love but Roman would be being cheered and penta would be cheered but no this had such a great dynamic and that's what I loved about that because I'm I don't I loved Chad Gable and dragon Lee I loved the main event for the good versus evil aspect and when I tell you there was so many great parts of that match where if you're a fan

11:31just go back and watch it because it's that good if you're a wrestler watch because we've all seen penta we've I've agent in penta but we've seen penta through the years think of how he's progressed in the biggest match of his career and he's the moments and how they are perfectly placed kickouts passion emotion how a man who wears a mask and paints his face gets that through you and makes you connect it's with his eyes and his body language but his eyes are the really only things that are shown and it's just he has this connection I mean literally when he loses there's people crying his families in attendance he had a perfect debut in the WWE and he had a perfect first time main event and I know there's a lot of people online because I check while I'm during commercial

12:32break we've had a lot of callers calling in oh this they WWE should have put the title on penta it's his first opportunity and when he gained so much in loss as opposed to victory the other part about this is there's more to come I get it everybody wants to have happy moments but I say this all the time you know world series every championships are not one on home court or in your home stadium and sometimes your home team loses and it also helps and wants you to cheer for that home team but tonight's performance with penta was perfect tonight's performance with Roman Reigns was perfect and tonight we saw

19:50face in mexico and they had perhaps a perfect match and we've saw the rise from there to where after that match when he unmasked and he just like said a really really nice thing and how much he respected lucha libre then he comes to the states and his baby face popularity continues he's always been on this quest for the intercontinental title and he finally wins the thing at summer slam it's hometown the intercontinental it's a great moment right and how the intercontinental title for the longest time to me it was the working man's title as much as he did for the world title and for professional wrestling Brett the hitman heart in my opinion made that intercontinental title very special and it was when where are the workers and the workhorses we we go to these guys

21:00that can just tear it up with anybody heels or baby faces and the when he defeated rottie piper and this one rottie piper's best athletic performances it was just like this guy you know is bound for greatness and of course Brett Hart has this amazing career in the WWE he went on to so much more but when I see that old intercontinental title I was like man and that title was made in my lifetime and I used to know every champion in a row I could probably start it but I'm not going to do that on this show that's probably a me and davel agreka deal one day but Chad Gabel is getting the intercontinental title over with hard work and great wrestling matches and I know that sounds so crazy to say but no I'm joking um you have to we don't always need intricate

22:07storylines we don't always need you know heels versus baby faces we just need two great wrestlers going at it for a title that means something this of course with dragon lee had um hometown ramifications but Chad Gabel was also loved and it was you heard them you know the fans chant many times in Spanish this is awesome um and quarry graves he really his love for triple A or lucha and what he brings to the table in broadcast like this because he's listening to the crowd he makes his notes and he's been you know he's the the lead commentator down for triple A when they're doing all these big events and he really does add to the mix and you saw at that moment and at that time and I'm again going to be very very clarify that it is the most

23:11recent money money match of the year candidate and if that was the only match that that no matter what happened on the rest of the show I would say man that's the most recent match of the year candidate where there's so many and it was a great show it really truly was every match everyone delivered and if it wasn't followed later on by what is then the most recent match of the year candidate uh with penta and roman reigns but there's a lot of good things that I liked about the match my biggest thing was the will to win and win the title and also the champion to defend and successfully defend his title it was a lot different emotion between that match and what we saw on the main event but the crowd was just as into it and we always talk about moments and there's

24:18also proper times when you're tapping out and how you're fighting it the last I would say two minutes of dragonly and chadgable was such an amazing story over two guys who can go and you're seeing all this great movement but when he goes for chadgable goes for the ankle lock and a dragonly rolls through hits the styles clash and of course a j was rubbed up against dragonly for a while they were friends tag team partners champions stuff like that when he hit that everyone thought it was over and then how after that it got reversed and then put in the fight to continue to use my finish which is on your ankle the ankle lock to win the match and some of those kicks that dragonly

25:24delivered to the face of chadgable listen chadgable's toffee's you know he's a legit Olympian and but the hits to the face and how they got into that finish and then dragonly doing everything arching his body trying to get to the ropes fighting the people don't want you to tap don't do it and just that last second it was the perfect tap out where you had the people at their highest and once they started to drop you tapped out and it didn't take the air out of the building they had respect for two warriors going out there and fighting for a prize championship and then the beautiful part afterwards was chadgable breaking the hold and then checking on his opponent I've seen this in UFC before you've seen it in WWE but it just felt different tonight where chad actually was so

26:28concerned about dragonly's health but he also wants to win that title and it was it was beautiful and it's artwork because again it's two baby faces going at it when all of that emotion went on and even like the the refs trying to give him the title and he's just like I want to check on the guy he's he's picking dragonly up dragonly is still selling keyword the ankle lock and it felt like a UFC fight it really and truly did and how chadgable raises his opponents arm dragonly and dragonly gets a standing ovation in a loss and that also had me saying because I kept saying to myself man are they going to pull the trigger and put the title on Pente tonight since dragonly lost where that match could have gone either way and both guys just

27:32did an amazing amazing job of making everybody like in feeling that hey our guys and girls are going to do it beautiful match and like I said match the air candidate and it's a continuation of chadgable's ascension also where chadgable's having some of the best matches in the WWE right now where it's everybody's business has stepped up and I got a kudos to the entire crew and I'll especially Roman Reigns because he doesn't wrestle that much but the air is different in Mexico City and the WWE wrestlers came prepared I know a lot of them were on the road but no one looked blown up no one looked gassed out of their mind I can specifically remember me wrestling there and it's just but we were wrestling all the time like nothing could have

28:36phased us but you just felt it you felt it burning in your lungs but I also remember where and I couldn't believe some of the questions I was being asked when we did a taping in Denver and people like man the air feels different was like yeah it's the mile high and like you need to train differently when you're wrestling there you really do you need to be prepared to when they say like deep in the water you're deep in the water two minutes in because of the air and that's where when you have those masks that you could train in the oxygen deprivation because it's helping you gain more stamina for a performance like you saw across the board tonight and we had some amazing performances but Chad Gable and Dragonly brought it both guys could pretty much do any type of style but you know Chad Gable a Matt wrestler technically

29:37but I mean does so much cool stuff Dragonly does some amazing stuff I thought Dragonly also got hurt on the the double stomp from the top to the floor I broke my ankle I crushed every bone in my heel though their floors are padded I didn't need to W arena actually it might have been on this day I'm gonna have to look it up which would be crazy but jumping from the top to the floor and didn't it's just weight right and I wasn't as heavy as I am today but the way he did it and then how Corey Graves picked up on it don't know if he if he even hurt himself but if he didn't he sold it like he did which also leads to the finish of the match great story and think of the simplicity of baby faces work holds they work body parts they try to weaken them up and they want to
