Purepoint CEO explains how drill core unlocks Uranium discoveries
About this episode
Purepoint Uranium Group CEO Chris Frostad joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss what happens during a scheduled two-week pause in drilling, explaining how geologists analyze drill core to refine exploration targets and improve the chances of making a uranium discovery.
Frostad said geophysical surveys are invaluable for identifying prospective targets, but they only reveal relative differences in rock properties, such as density, gravity, and graphitic conductors, rather than the exact geology beneath the surface. The first drill hole helps confirm rock types, fault orientations, and whether conductive horizons occur at the expected depth, but meaningful geological interpretation requires multiple holes.
He compared the process to a three-legged stool, explaining that geologists typically need at least three drill holes before they can confidently connect data points and begin defining the geometry of a mineralized system.
Frostad also described the real-time decisions exploration teams face during drilling, including whether to adjust the angle of the next hole, relocate the drill rig, or pause drilling to allow time for geological interpretation. With each hole costing between $300,000 and $500,000, careful planning is essential to maximize exploration success.
A key part of the process is preserving the orientation of the drill core. Frostad said orientation tools allow geologists to accurately determine the direction of faults, fractures, and mineralized structures, preventing misleading interpretations that could result from rotating the core.
Following field logging, gamma probe measurements, and structural analysis, the data are integrated into 3D geological models, enabling the exploration team to map fault trends and structural controls that may host uranium mineralization and guide the next phase of drilling.
