Psalm 22: The Messianic Song

The most misunderstood sentence Jesus speaks from the cross might be the one that carries the most hope. When Jesus cries, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” he is not improvising a moment of defeat. He is quoting Psalm 22, a famous song in Israel, and the first line is meant to pull the whole psalm into view.
