Product News: OAuth Authentication for the Semaphore MCP Server

We’re preparing a new update for the Semaphore MCP server that will make it easier for developers to connect AI agents and developer tools.
The focus of this update is authentication.
Today, connecting an agent to the MCP server typically requires using a long-lived API token. While this works well, it also means developers need to generate credentials, store them in configuration files, and manage them manually.
In our next release, coming next week, we’re introducing OAuth authentication support for the MCP server.
This will make connecting agents and developer tools significantly simpler.
Instead of generating and storing API tokens, developers will be able to authenticate through a familiar OAuth flow. When configuring an agent, a browser window opens, you log in, and approve access to the MCP server. Once approved, the connection is established automatically.
This approach removes the need to manage long-lived credentials and makes integrations easier to set up.
It also improves compatibility with modern agentic development tools. Some tools have limitations when working with static API tokens, and OAuth removes those barriers.

Hey everyone, I'm Pete Melorovic. Welcome back to Semaphore Product News, where we share updates on what our team is building and what's coming next. Today I want to give you a quick preview of an update that's coming next week for the Semaphore MCP server. This update focuses on improving authentication when connecting AI agents and developer tools to Semaphore. Right now, the MCP server typically uses API tokens for authentication. These are long-lived credentials that developers generate and store in their configuration. That works, but it also means managing credentials manually and keeping them stored securely. So in our next release, we're introducing OAuth authentication for the MCP server. With OAuth, connecting an agent becomes much simpler. When you configure a tool to use the MCP server, a browser window opens, you log into Semaphore, and approve the connection. Once you authorize access, the agent is connected automatically. You no longer need to
generate or store long-lived API tokens in your configuration. This also improves compatibility with modern AI development tools. Some tools have limitations when working with static API tokens, and OAuth helps remove those barriers. Another benefit is that this lays the groundwork for more granular permissions in the future. For example, agents will eventually be able to access only specific projects or perform specific actions inside those projects. That means safer and more controlled automation as developers begin running more agents in their workflows. This upcoming update will also include a contribution from the community. Corey from Confluent opened a pull request adding tools for working with Semaphore tasks through MCP, expanding what agents can do when connected to Semaphore. All of this is part of our broader direction for Semaphore, making it easier to integrate CICD with modern AI-driven development workflows while keeping developers in control. The update will be rolling out next week.
