Power Rankings BIG Moves AND New NUMBER One!

0:00All right, it is a special Lockdown power rankings episode and we have a lot of movement this week, including a new number one and a couple of pretty big drops. So let's get to all 32 teams ranked in terms of power on this episode of Lockdown Avalanche. This week I am always in the host of your power rankings, Zach Pearson. And I'm pretty excited to bring these ones to you. Like I said, lots of movement this week, a couple of pretty big drops, couple of pretty big jumps and a brand new number one. So let's go ahead and get right into that. 1:03rankings are Colorado Avalanche coming in at number three Tampa Bay Lightning or number one. And you had Carolina to Buffalo at four to round out that top four section. We're just going to go ahead and jump right into it. Coming in at number 32 this week and one of the few teams that makes no movement whatsoever, we've got the Vancouver Canucks Vancouver over this last week, one three and one. They go with wins against Chicago, win against Chicago, losses to Seattle Dallas, Carolina, and Winnipeg. Vancouver just continues to be hanging out at the bottom of the standings. They are still currently last place in the Western conference, only 46 points so far this season through 63 games played. It's just revealed time for Vancouver. We've seen it. We know that's where they're at. So just get to the off season if you're a Vancouver Canucks fan at this point.

2:04Coming in at number 29 and all, sorry, at number 31, 29, we're not jumping three spots. Coming in at 31 and also staying in the same spot as last week, we've got the New York Rangers. New York also over the last week, only two, one and one. They do get a win against Pittsburgh and a win against Toronto, but over their last 10 games played, three, five and two and a minus seven goal differential. It is impressive. They did win at home against Toronto, but I mean, it's also Toronto who you'll see here pretty quickly in these power rankings. So New York finds themselves not able to move up. I think this is another team really just looking forward to the off season. Coming in at number 30 and the third out of five teams total staying in the same spot this week, we've got St. Louis. The St. Louis Blues over this last week go three,

3:08one and oh, actually pretty solid. However, they're just there's not enough movement. There hasn't been enough for them to really climb their way up any higher in my opinion in the power rankings. They're doing all right, but they're still minus 50 goal differential on the year over their last 10. They're only a plus two, even with this last week going three and one. St. Louis goal differential over the last week as well. If we just look at that, they are, excuse me, a plus two in that too. So St. Louis, they're winning a couple of games, but they're still not doing enough in my opinion to move really up. This is a team that's just going to kind of hang out there. Coming in at number 29 and here is that big drop for the week. You have got an abysmal week from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto, 0, 3 and 2, five losses over the week. They are a minus 11

4:16in their last 10 in goal differential, 3, 5 and 2 in their last 10. They currently sit second to last in the Eastern Conference only above the New York Rangers who have struggled mightily this year. And Toronto, like I said, 3, 5 and 2 last 10, 2 game losing streak, minus 24 goal differential on the season. They're just falling apart. They did make some moves at the deadline, which kind of looks like they're looking to go looking for the future. So this is a team that I just don't see winning a whole heck of a lot of games through their final 18 games of the season. They find themselves down at number 29 from 22 last week. So like I said, a seven spot drop in my opinion for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Coming in at number 28, the fourth of only five teams to not move spots from last week, we've got the Calgary Flames. Calgary finds themselves going one three and one over

5:17the last week. They are currently sitting at 25, 30 and seven on the season, 7, 2 and 1 over their last 10 with a minus 9 goal differential in that time. Calgary obviously selling off some assets and looking to the rebuild. So even with win over Carolina, which is a pretty impressive win, particularly post cadre trade, but they're just they're clearly embracing the rebuild. We're not going to expect Calgary to really do a whole lot for the rest of the season. Hopefully they'll be able to turn it around with a lot of the assets that they got back at this trade deadline. Coming in at number 27, moving up two spots, the Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago moves up two spots really because of Toronto's mighty, mighty fall. They also do get a win over Utah and their losses this week, while one does come to the Vancouver Connox. The other ones come to Colorado and Winnipeg. Winnipeg

6:18and overtime and Winnipeg, who's been playing pretty well. So Chicago goes one two and one over the last week. Their goal differential is a minus two, so not anything too crazy. There's still this is another bottom of the week team for the remainder of the season for sure. They're not going to end up making it pretty much anywhere this year, but you're still looking at a pretty promising future for the Chicago Blackhawks, and they've got some talent on the team, which is why I've got them moving up two spots to 27. Coming in at number 26, dropping three spots from last week, the Florida Panthers. Florida find themselves dropping from 23 to 26, because they have three losses to the Isles, the Devils, and the Blue Jackets on the week. They pretty much found themselves completely out of playoff contention at this point. 37 and O in their last 10. This is a team that just needs, they need the rest, I think. Too many injuries,

7:23too much to overcome for this season to go from Stanley Cup champions to this spot. Maybe not the move that everybody was expecting to see, not the season everybody was expecting to see from the Panthers, but I mean, they still are a pretty solid team. They've still got plenty of things they can do. It's just, I really think everything sort of caught up with them, but three Stanley Cup appearances in a row back to back Stanley Cup champions. Sometimes you're just tired, and Florida kind of seems like a team this season that is tired. Coming in at number 25 and dropping one spot from last week, the Nashville Predators. Nashville find themselves in fifth in the Western Conference wildcard race. There are only three spots behind Seattle for that second wildcard, and they only have one more game played. Three points behind rather, not three spots, but they are still 4-4-2 in their last 10, a minus 29 on the season, and a minus one in their

8:27last 10 games for the Nashville Predators. They do get a pretty good win over Boston, and they force the Dallas Stars to overtime, but then also lose to a few pretty good teams in Detroit, Columbus, and Buffalo. So not winning games, but it's also hard to punish them a lot for losses to really good teams over the last week. Nashville, though, probably not going to be a team that makes the playoffs. I think the Western Conference, apart from maybe the two teams ahead of them, but still out of the wildcard race, I think the Western Conference is pretty much set. So Nashville finds themselves coming in at number 25. We will keep an eye on what they do moving forward, but trade deadline passed, not a whole lot for Nashville to move up or down. They just find themselves dropping the one spot. Coming in at number 24, and part of the reason why Nashville

9:28finds themselves dropping the one spot, the Winnipeg Jets Winnipeg find themselves on a three-game win streak, five, two, and three in their last 10. Over that time span, they are a minus three in the gold differential, but they do get a win over Tampa Bay this week, including wins over Vancouver and Chicago. And one over time lost to the San Jose Sharks, who a little bit of struggling for the Sharks right now, but Winnipeg able to still force them into overtime. And after the really rough start that the Winnipeg Jets had, they've certainly turned it up as of late. They are one game in hand on Utah, but 10 points behind them. They are tied in games played with the Seattle Kraken for that second wildcard spot and five points behind. So Winnipeg still could potentially push. I don't really see them making a playoff spot, but they certainly have been playing better as of late. Find themselves moving up two spots to number 24. At number 23, and moving up four spots

10:35from last week, we have got the New Jersey Devils. New Jersey finds themselves 5-5-0 in their last 10, but on a four game win streak, they do not lose this week beating St. Louis, Florida, Toronto in a shootout, but still beating Toronto and the Rangers. The Devils minus two in their last 10, but turn things up a bit enough to get some positive movement. The Devils are currently nine points out of a playoff spot with one more game played than Boston for that second wildcard in the Eastern Conference. Again, playing better, still one of the teams that I don't necessarily expect to see making the playoffs here. Coming in at number 22, jumping up three spots from last week, another really good week, the Philadelphia Flyers. Philly finds themselves with wins over Boston, Toronto, tried to combine those two. Boston, Toronto and Pittsburgh, shootouts for Toronto and

11:37Pittsburgh, and a loss to Utah. But the Philadelphia Flyers, they are only six points out of that playoff spot. Five, three, and two in their last 10, and over that time, they are a minus five goal differential, but Philadelphia playing a little bit better hockey. Again, another one of those, I don't know that they really are going to make the playoffs, but certainly playing better as of recently. Number 21, this week, dropping three spots from last week. You've got the Washington capitals. Washington does not have a win over this last week, going 0, 3 and 0, three regulation losses to Montreal, Utah and Boston. They are a zero goal differential over the last week. Little bit of a rough run for the capitals, but they do move a couple of assets out. They drop their defenseman, whose name I cannot come up with right now. But they're probably looking forward

12:38to next season as well. So Washington finds themselves on a three point tumble and down to number 21. We're going to take this spot to go ahead and get our first break in. And number 20 this week is staying in the same spot. And this is the last team that does not move. So only five in the same spot Los Angeles Kings are that fifth team that stay in the same spot. Winds against Calgary and the New York Islanders losses against Colorado and Montreal. So over their last 10, they are looking at a minus 13 goal differential, which is I wouldn't necessarily say great. They've definitely had some struggles, but they're able to pull off a couple of wins

16:49here and there. And in the Western Conference, there are only three points behind Seattle for that second wild card spot. If they can put together just a couple of things they might might be able to snag that last wild card spot. It's going to be tough though, because Seattle, like I said, has a three point lead and you still have to leapfrog San Jose as well. So LA finds themselves kind of on that brink may or may not be able to make that leap into the playoffs. Coming in at number 19 this week, speaking of teams that the LA Kings have to leapfrog, you've got the San Jose sharks who drop two spots from 17 last week. Losses to St. Louis and the Islanders both in overtime do kind of drop San Jose a little bit, but you do also have wins against Edmonton, Winnipeg and Montreal to keep you in that playoff hunt.

17:49They do have a game in hand and are only one point behind the Seattle Kraken. San Jose, if they can figure some pieces out, really do have a shot at playoffs this year, which would be such a big jump for them from where they came from last season and what we expected. So I do think they can pull that off. It'll be interesting to see what the San Jose sharks do through the rest of the season. Coming in at number 18, jumping up three spots from last week, the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa's only lost over this last week comes to the Edmonton oilers. Otherwise, Ottawa's 301 with wins over, excuse me, with wins over Toronto Calgary and Seattle. They are a plus 14 goal differential in their last 10 and Ottawa currently finds themselves four points back of a playoff spot behind Boston, seven one and two in their last 10. They are really playing much better hockey as of late with the opportunity to possibly push for

18:55that last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. We'll see they also have a team to leapfrog to see if they can make it up in that have been playing really well as of late. Also, so Ottawa has a chance. We'll see how it goes. Coming in at number 17 and dropping one spot from 16 last week, we've got the Seattle Kraken. Seattle has wins over Vancouver and an impressive win over the Carolina Hurricanes and then also losses to St. Louis and the Ottawa Senators who I have them one spot ahead of. The Seattle Kraken, as I said, two two and oh in their last over the last week. They are five five and oh over their last 10, but two games skid at the moment as well. Minus nine goal differential. They are currently the only team in the Western Conference. Nope. Sorry. I take that back. They are one of two teams in the Western Conference in a playoff spot with a negative goal differential. The other one being leading their division and we'll get

19:59to them here pretty soon because they've been playing pretty well, but they also are sporting a negative goal differential. Seattle, though, 67 points and 62 games played, as I said, a minus nine on the season, but five five and oh in their last 10 and the Seattle Kraken are only a minus two over their last 10. So playing decent enough hockey to hold on to that playoff spot for now. We'll see if they can keep their positioning coming in at number 16. We've got the Vegas Golden Knights Vegas 72 points on the season. 14 of those points come from overtime or shoot out losses. The Vegas Golden Knights over their last week go one three and oh they are or sorry one three and one correct yes because they no they win against Detroit and overtime. Sorry one three and oh yes one three and oh losses to Pittsburgh Buffalo and Minnesota,

21:01but they do get an overtime win on the Detroit Red Wings minus two in that time. Vegas might end up being a well depending on how another team in their division goes. They may end up dropping down towards that wildcard spot where they were leading their division for most of the year, but they now find themselves second in the Pacific division. Be interesting to see where Vegas ends up come playoff time. I'm pretty sure they will be in the playoffs, but they may not be at the top of their division as they have been all year coming in at number 15 jumping up four spots and this is that team that I said auto was going to have to try and find a way to leapfrog if they're going to battle for that last playoff in the east. You've got the Columbus Blue Jackets Columbus 7 1 and 2 in their last 10 Columbus is a plus 11 gold differential in their last 10 over this week. They have wins over

22:06the Rangers, the Predators and the Florida Panthers, losses though to the Islanders and the Utah mammoth both in overtime. So they are getting points out of everything this week, but they are not winning all five of their games. Still a pretty impressive stretch for the Columbus Blue Jackets who find themselves only two points out of a playoff spot behind the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference. They keep playing the way they have been, they could very well find their way into the postseason here at the end of the regular season. Coming in at number 14 and dropping two spots from last week, the New York Islanders, New York, they do have wins this week over the Blue Jackets who they are one ahead of right now. Florida and the San Jose Sharks, losses to Anaheim and the LA Kings, minus three, but the New York Islanders right now still holding on to the number two spot in the Metropolitan, 64 and O in their last 10. They are a very, very solid team. I just

23:14am not totally certain what to take of them night in night out because they sometimes are not winning the games. I expect them to win. However, that Matthew Schaefer kid is still really good and I think I bring him up in every power rankings for good reason. He's going to be a force for this team for a long time. Coming in at number 13, moving up one spot from last week, the Utah mammoth, Utah don't find themselves moving up more than one spot because of a loss to the Chicago Black Hawks, but they do win against the Washington Capitals, Philly Flyers and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Over their last 10, they are a plus seven goal differential, 64 and O and on a three game win streak are the mammoth. They are a plus 28 on the season, 72 points. Like I said, they're holding on to that first wild card spot. I do think that Utah's going to be in the postseason this year and it'll be interesting to see who they end up playing whether it'll be whether they get the number one or

24:16number two spot in the wild card. Kind of looking like the number one, I think your top six are pretty well set in the Western Conference. Kind of feels like the seventh spot might just be Utah's to lose. So the eighth spot will go on to face most likely the avalanche. So we'll see that's the Utah mammoth might be playing against whoever wins the Pacific Division. Coming in at number 12, dropping one spot from last week, the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton is still capable of scoring goals, but over just the last week, 1, 2 and O and a minus three goal differential, 15 goals allowed over just three games. Like there are some teams that have played five games and have let up only one more goal, two more games and have only let up one more goal. Goaltending is an issue

25:18for the Edmonton Oilers right now. They're going to have to get that figured out, but it's not something that they addressed. So I guess they're thinking, Jerry will really be able to push them up to where they need to be, but they still find themselves four points behind Vegas sitting in third spot in the Pacific Division, 46 and O in their last 10. Like I said, Edmonton is really going to have to get it together here, and it seems like they're just going to have to outscore their problems. Ken Connor, McDavid, do that to keep them in contention for the cup. At number 11 this week and dropping three spots, the Boston Bruins. Boston finds themselves in that second wild card spot in the east, five, two and three in their last 10 plus 13 on the season. There's 75 points, puts them two points behind Detroit in that wild card with one game in hand. So really the one two spot in that wild card is kind of Detroit and Boston's right now, but Columbus,

26:21like I said, potentially pretty close and Ottawa is not too far behind. So pretty tight race over there. Boston this week finds themselves with wins against Pittsburgh and Washington losses to Philadelphia and Nashville, which is why they find themselves dropping down to 11 from eight last week. Coming in at 10, you've got the Pittsburgh penguins. Pittsburgh dropping one spot from number nine last week. They do beat the Vegas Golden Knights, but then have losses to the Rangers, the Bruins and the Sabers. They are a plus five over their last 10 games, and Pittsburgh is currently four four and three with just one overtime loss being their streak and a plus 24 on the season gold differential. A little bit of a rough week. I know they're really looking forward to getting sit back as long as they can hold on to that playoff spot. They could do something in the playoffs, especially once the captain returns. Coming in at number nine and jumping up four spots from 13

27:29last week, you've got a really red hot Anaheim Ducks team. The Anaheim Ducks have moved their way to a top, the Pacific Division, 7-3-0 in their last 10, 73 points on the season in 62 games played. They're the only other team in the Western Conference with a negative gold differential on the season, and yet they find themselves at the top of the Pacific Division. Over their last 10, Anaheim is a neutral gold differential, but they do win last week against Calgary, the Islanders and Montreal, taking care of teams that they should, as well as winning against a team ranked above them and losing to the really, really good and hot Colorado avalanche. Anaheim, I think, probably going to hold on to that number one spot in the Pacific because of the struggles that Vegas and Edmonton are having. We'll see if they can do anything come post

28:29season. Let's go ahead and get our last break in on the other side. We will go through numbers eight through one and we'll get to who the number one team in my power rankings is. Stick around. Let's go ahead and get to who I think are the eight best teams in the NHL right now coming in at number eight dropping one

30:34spot from last week. The Detroit Red Wings Detroit wins against Nashville and the Kings losses to Carolina Vegas and overtime and Florida, which is why they find themselves dropping one spot minus 11 over their last 10. There are three five and two in that span, but they still find themselves in that number one wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. I do still think Detroit has plenty of talent and absolutely has the ability to get into the postseason and as long as they can make it in, they can definitely make some kind of a splash coming in at number seven and jumping up three spots from last week. The Montreal Canadiens Montreal does have losses to San Jose and Anaheim in the last week, but they have wins over Washington and the Los Angeles Kings. However, over the last 10, Montreal is six one and three and they find themselves firmly in that third place spot in the

31:35Atlantic Division. 78 points puts them four points behind a Red Hot Buffalo team and four points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning. So Montreal playing good enough hockey to maintain that spot. They still probably find themselves in one of the top three spots in that Atlantic Division for the playoffs. We'll see how how everything plays out for the rest of the season, but Montreal still playing pretty solid hockey. Still a good enough team to make some noise here. Coming in at number six and dropping five spots from last week. Second biggest drop. The Tampa Bay Lightning Tampa Bay six four no and their last 10 still solid, but over this last week they find themselves losing to Buffalo, Minnesota and Winnipeg. They're only win coming against the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are a plus two goal differential in their last 10 plus 52 on the year. Again 82 points,

32:39but they are tied now with Buffalo for number one in the Atlantic Division. Buffalo with two more games played. So in like Tampa could easily take that back over, but they have been sliding a bit as of late and it'll be interesting to see where they find themselves positioning lies come the end of the season. Coming in at number five, dropping one spot and not because of anything they did, but because of how hot the teams who jumped over them are the Buffalo Sabers. Buffalo has a terrific week with wins over Tampa, Vegas, Pittsburgh and Nashville. Buffalo also finds themselves seven two and one in their last 10 and on a six game winning streak, Buffalo just playing phenomenal phenomenal hockey right now. It is hard to argue that they are not one of the best teams in the NHL at this very moment and it feels like they're going pretty in on this trade deadline.

33:39Names involved in a lot of trades picking up a couple of guys to push them potentially over the edge. I'm really excited to see what Buffalo can do for the rest of the season. Do they take that number one spot away from the Tampa Bay Lightning? It is very possible. Coming in at number four, jumping up one spot and part of the reason why I moved Buffalo down. You got the Minnesota wild Minnesota wins last week over the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Vegas Golden Knights. They do drop a game to St. Louis, but Minnesota over their last 10, eight, two and oh. They are in that time a plus 13 goal differential. They are playing really, really good hockey 2 1 and 0 over the last week like I said, they're probably like the central division pretty much is set though. There's three teams that are going to be representing the central division at the top and it is Dallas, Minnesota and Colorado. We'll see how the actual positioning all plays out, but Minnesota certainly

34:44looking good certainly continues to play really well and finds themselves at number four in my power rankings coming in at three dropping one spot. And again, this is more to do with the teams jumping over them than the teams than anything they've done specifically. The Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina does have a couple of losses this week to Seattle and Calgary, which hurts a little bit. But overall, they are still number one in the metropolitan with 86 points finding themselves four points ahead of Tampa Bay for the Eastern Conference first place. They are 7 2 and 1 in their last 10 and they have a plus 41 goal differential. The loss to Calgary, especially after Calgary sells off all their assets is interesting, but there's still just a really, really good team. I think it's a very real possibility Calgary Carolina ends up representing the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup finals. We shall see, but they find themselves at three. And again, a lot of that has to do with

35:52the number two and number one teams. Number two, the Dallas stars Dallas has wins this week over Nashville Vancouver and Calgary. Their only loss to Colorado is over the last week. That is their only loss. They are 9 0 and 1 in their last 10. And in that span, they are a plus 18 goal differential without Mika Ranton and without Tyler Sagan. They go out. They make a couple of acquisitions at the deadline to get them just a little bit better. They improve Dallas is going to be a really dangerous team. This is, it's a shame that the Dallas and Colorado can't be the Western Conference final. It just, it won't happen. There's a very good chance that it's Dallas and Minnesota in the first round, which also is a little bit of a shame because those two teams are really good and that's going to be a really good season series, rather. Coming in at number one, they've jumped their way

36:53back up, moving up two spots from number three last week. I want you to get the word out there that we're back up. Colorado is my number one power ranked team. And that is because in addition to going seven, three and over their last 10 and a four game winning streak, plus being a plus eight over that time, the acquisition, re acquisition of Nazum Kadry really puts the avalanche up over the top. Nick Waugh helps this team as well. They just got better at this trade deadline. And buy a pretty good amount. And before Kadry's even able to skate with the team, they do beat Dallas in a shootout. This is starting to feel like the avalanche team evolved. And oh, by the way, the power play seems to have found its stride, even just a little bit. Pretty good improvement since the Olympic break. Still a small sample size, but if Colorado's got that power play figured out, this is definitely the team to beat in the NHL. So there they are. My team's ranked numbers
