Avalanche Need Another Selke-esq Season From Brock Nelson

With Alexander Barkov missing all of last season, it left the door open for somebody else to come in and take a Selky award, which Brock Nelson did by becoming a finalist and Nick Suzuki did by winning it. We're going to talk about if that can happen again this year on Lockdown Abilance.

We are going to continue our series on saying nice things about other teams. It's the Boston Bruins today. So stay tuned for that. Chris Criter has cleared waivers and his contract terminated with the Ducks. Interesting scenario over there. We're going to talk about that. Well, he said where we're going to start is the Selky award. We're going to finish off our award C's week with the Selky. We'll go back and listen to all this week's episodes because we do one award each week. And today's a Selky best defensive forward. And the abs, it's weird because they have a few of those guys. One of them left in Valichriskin.

2:07Yep. I always thought he didn't get enough credit and should get more votes for this award. Don't have to worry about that this year because it's not our job to make a case for him anymore because he's not on the table. Right. That doesn't mean there's not other guys that we can't make a case for. So I like this award. I feel like it's a less kind of like one that's followed as much. More people put all their eggs in the Norris basket or the heart basket. But I think it's one of the more important awards that doesn't get noticed as much. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, 200 foot player is a huge type of player to have on the ice. And if you can have a forward who can handle everything that he needs to in the offensive zone, but then come back and take care of things in your defensive zone as well. That is a player that you really need to appreciate.

3:07And I mean, you've already started it with Brock Nelson, right? Bringing that up in the intro there that it kind of opened the door with Barcavau. So everybody who's hard on Brock Nelson, the fact that he finished third. Yeah, maybe the production isn't quite where you wanted it to be through the entirety of the season. And I understand the postseason, but you have to appreciate what he brings to your team defensively as well as offensively. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I thought, you know, we talked about him a lot. Obviously, good in the bad. Good is the regular season. Bad was the postseason. And when we talk about him, like we bring up his numbers and how he was like a 30 and 30 guy in the seat, like put up 61 or 62 points. So I remember what it was for the season. But like, that's what you want. That's what the average I've been looking for. But we didn't talk enough about how he plays defensively. And you said it, like you hear it all the time of like 200 foot players.

4:11And okay, now we're voting on them. And it just seems like it's when you're the seasons over and we're handing out this award. Like, this is one of the, I don't think it's like the first award that's handed out. But we're like, okay, let's just get on to the good. Let's get on to the heart. Who's one in the heart? Who's one in the Norris? And it's like, no, these are really important players. These are your all three zone type of players. And the apps have them. Obviously. Nelson. Leckin is definitely one of those guys. Here's the voting from last year, just to refresh your memory. And I think this is only one through 15. But there was a ton of guys that got votes somewhere between 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. And I know pretty sure Nathan McKinnon was on here somewhere. I think he was like, he had a vote somewhere. Yeah, he's or something like that. He was on there, which I loved for all the people who just say he doesn't get back on defense.

5:12You have a point sometimes because he puts so much effort into his offensive game. He's just spent getting back on defense. But yeah, I like the fact that he got a couple votes last year. I agree. Yeah. But you have Nick Suzuki winning this. And I think this is going to be the interesting thing. Like I said, in the opening with Barclough missing all of last season. Let me interject real quick too. Nick Suzuki winning this running away with it. Landslot. Like not even a close discussion. Yes. And I think four times the next best votes. 1,726 points. And Sirelli came in second with 467. Yeah. Brock Nelson a close third, a close to Sirelli at 406 points. And I think this Barclough missing that because Barclough was kind of taking over for Patrice Bergeron, which is oddly enough, we're talking about the Boston Bureau in Sirelli. But like because Bergeron was just like year after year just winning this thing.

6:15It was like just give it to him. No point in voting. And then when he retired, kind of became like Barclough and Barclough, I think it's 1,3. Yes, he's 1,3, and 2021, 24, and 25. So he missed all of last year. And I think I wonder how the voting is going to go next year. Because someone like Suzuki took advantage of it. And does just make the voting for this a little bit closer for next year. For this year, I should say. It depends on how Barclough does. Sure. But I agree. I think Suzuki kind of shoe horns his way into. He's going to have more attention. How about this? It doesn't guarantee you more votes, but people aren't going to sleep on him so much. Well, and I think by the difference in voting for this, if this was as close as the heart was, where you had the top three guys really close to each other, and it kind of just told

7:19you voters didn't really know where to go, or maybe that's the mission, say that. Voters spread it across the board on who they thought should win. If that was the case here for the Selkie, where you had Suzuki, Sirelli Nelson even go to four and five and Mariner install, where those points are a lot closer. It's just like, okay, we're just divvying up points that are not Barclough. And once Barclough comes back, he's going to get everything. But the fact that Suzuki just blew the competition away makes you feel like, okay, this could be a close race if they both have seasons that you expect them to have. Agreed. Playing defensively as a forward. So, like I said, when I'm a bird drum retired, it was almost like, okay, now it's just going to be Barclough just kind of sliding in there and just taking that banner. I don't know anymore. I think voters maybe are going to have might be a two-way race between Suzuki and Barclough,

8:21but then maybe someone else can sneak up in there. We'll see. And I'm excited to see Suzuki continue to do what he's capable of doing. So I do hope he gets that he's going to have more attention. I hope he gets more votes. I would love to see Suzuki repeat this also because I kind of want to see Montreal make a little bit more of a splash again this year. Yeah. And I know they're capable of it. It just be a lot more fun than Barclough. And I don't have anything against Barclough necessarily. I don't want Florida to continue to do well. Sorry, Florida. I mean, I don't necessarily dislike you, but you're a very tropical state. You shouldn't have a Stanley Cup peeding team. I thought you were going to say, I thought you said you shouldn't even have a hockey team. You're a tropical state. I'll let them have a hockey team because I wasn't I wasn't being mean to the Carolina Hurricanes for, you know, Carolina having a team.

9:21So I won't quite go all the way to there. But, you know, maybe maybe you shouldn't be quite as good as you are. And that's why I'm angry at you, which we've talked about plenty of times become good. And I don't like any more unless you the apps. Exactly. I am hoping I want Suzuki to really keep that attention and take some votes for himself this year. I think I might. Two guys on here that I like it for in this position. Alex Tuck. I don't know longer on Buffalo, but I think he's a very good defensive forward and Nico Hesher. Yeah. I don't think he gets enough notoriety for his defensive game as a forward. So probably a guy that should get more votes and it's in that realm of the Valnicheskin. Like just it's really good at it. It doesn't get enough notoriety for it. So. Yep. Absolutely. Absolutely. There goes. I think it's going to be an interesting vote. I don't think any more it is a runaway for Barcaf and it's because of those numbers.

10:27Those numbers weren't like that. You'd be like, okay, just Barcaf has got to get back in there and it's another ho-hum selky for him. So then do you think Brock Nelson has even noticed this year or do you think he just sort of. Yeah, I think he can get in there. No, I think he can too. I think he can because he wasn't. I mean, if you're keeping things as is like status quo inserting Barcaf, okay, it's going to be Barcaf and Suzuki. And you know, if it's still Sirelli and Nelson, like Nelson wasn't that far off from Sirelli in terms of points. So we'll see. I think he'll be up there. I think the best he can do is three again. I would agree. So, you know, if we, when we get the announcement for who the finalists are and if it's Barcaf and Suzuki Nelson, we know where Nelson's going to finish. 100% he's going to get in there. No offense Brock, but you would have to do some crazy stuff this year to beat those two. Yep. Right.

13:32which he agreed to and he cleared waivers. Nobody claimed him going as far to say he wants to go about East. Obviously he played for the Rangers for years, traded to Anaheim and he said he wanted to go back East. And if he did get claimed by a West Coast team, he was just not going to show up. So he went and said that. So yes, I don't need no stinkin trade clause. I'm just not going to show up. So we'll talk about that. And then because we're going to bring this around to the avalanche, I think in another time, another cap situation, I think this is something the avalanche would have looked into. They can't do it. Forget about him wanting to go East back East thing. If he was open to, okay, I'm a free agent. I'll talk to all 31 teams, other 31 teams.

14:32And the abs had the cap space. I think they would have won after Criter. I agree. He's the type of guy he's got. He's got great speed. He has a scoring touch. He would have added to their age average. Sure. What is he up to now? 35. He's 35. So that one went over to well with the fan base. I think if the ads were in a position, I think Criter was someone that they would have loved to bring it. I would agree. Yeah, but it's not going to happen. Not unless he can somehow sign for less than the league minimum. Or you are you on track down. Yeah. And unfortunately, we don't have those very special Vegas rules of just bringing in whoever we want and not having to pay. But I would have liked to have seen them had they had the opportunity. It would have been cool to see the abs take a shot at Criter. Because I agree.

15:33I think he can produce at a level that would work well on this team for the upcoming season. It really bolsters your depth for a year. You're not looking at a long time contract. He can put up some, he can score goals for you still. He really should be able to do something wherever he signs. So it's going to be interesting. I'm excited to see where he lands. Little disappointed that we don't have the cap space. 75 games last year, 50 points. Yeah. His last year with the Rangers 2324 82 games 75 points year before that 79 games 54 year before that 81 games 77. He can score. He can. He can score. And I mean, I've like in on the Rangers records like he's high up with some of these points and stuff like that with the Rangers. You just don't think of Chris Criter as being someone that's that's the top of some

16:38avalanche Rangers records with the history that they have. But he is. Yeah. So I think the Philadelphia Flyers could do the most hilarious thing in the world. Didn't even consider that. Would kind of be perfect. I would be one of the more epic trolls kind of. Would he go for it? He might. Why not? It would be man, that would be a whole way. He wants to go back east. I don't know if he's not that far from New York City. No. I don't know where his family is. I don't know if his family is in New York or not. I know his family is back east. I don't know where east. But probably north east. That would be hilarious. Somewhere like Philadelphia would would fit perfectly. Or like the Bruins maybe or talking about the Bruins a lot here. But yeah, I think I would love to see it.

17:38He's going to get a chance. He's going to play another. Another season for sure. So yeah, it's going to be interesting to see where he where he ends up landing. I yeah, go ahead. I wish well for him. Like I really want him to do well. For one more season. I understand why Anna Heim had to get rid of him. I get the cap space. You got to do everything that you can. So that all makes sense. I would love to see him get a good run with a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference. Yeah. And I think another reason why the Adelaunch if they could have in the position to do it is like it's great on the power play. Yeah. Great on the power play, which I've been told the abs were not so good in last year. It was a little little rocky at times. Yeah. And by app times, I mean 100% of the time. Little rocky. But it would be it would be really cool to see him. Make it to the abs.

18:39But now I'm hoping for Philly. You've put that in my head and I don't think I can get past that. I need them to do it. And it's a possibility. It really is a possibility that it could happen. So definitely something to keep our eyes on. But for for Anna Heim, it's just like I wonder, I don't think they really wanted to do this obviously, but they had no choice. Yeah. They had. You got to sign go to a it's been a rough offseason for Anna. It really has. Philly's just absolutely destroyed them. That offer sheet was pure mayhem in Anna Heim's front office. On the same note, Anna Heim's GM, you got to make that contract deal for before Philadelphia has a chance to extend that offer sheet. Like that is 100% on Anna Heim's GM. You're reading what you sowed. Yep. You have to do it. Another thing just to keep your eye on before the season gets underway. Where does Chris Criderland, if it goes to Philly, that's kind of like a coastal rivalry between

19:46those two teams, which is players going back and forth. And it goes before the Leo Carlson signing too. So it's a fun one. Like we're talking about, you know, the Florida rivalry in Battle of Alberta, and those are all legit rivals. This is a different one of teams that only play twice a year. And I'm asked to just, Anna Heim fans, especially have to did test Philadelphia right now. Before we end on this discussion, I do want to throw it out there. So let's go into a hypothetical world where the avalanche did not sign Schwartz. Okay. Do you like 34? He's a year older. Yeah. And what like what do you offer him to try and get him to stay? Because Schwartz at 3.25, he can take a lesser deal because he just like he's bought out, right? So he doesn't money wise. I guess if if a team wants to throw money at him, then he'll take it because why wouldn't

20:48you? But he doesn't have to have that. It would be an interesting call because at 35, depending on what team he goes to, he's either a top six guy or I mean, would he want a middle six role with a team like the avalanche? Because he's not going to be he's not going to be asked to be a top line guy. And at his age, does he still want that? Yeah. I don't know where he's at in terms of that. But Schwartz out would put him as your second line left wing. So you're still a top six. You are a top six. Yeah. I would have liked it. Me too. I think I would have gone that I'm excited for Schwartz. I'm not trying to be down on Schwartz. No. I'm trying to be optimistic here. But man, I kind of wish we would have known that this was going to happen. It would have been a good fit. Yeah. It would have been a really good fit.

21:49Because not only is he, you know, he's fast, he can score. What's another thing that is always kind of coming down on the abs is size. Yep. Chris Crider's 230 pounds. And he does not look like that out on the ice. He's deceptively big. Yeah. And to have the speed he has at that size, you don't see it. Yep. You don't see it. So he's going to latch on with somebody and they're getting a pretty decent player here, even at his age. Agreed. So I can't go back. You can. I'm with you. We were James Schwartz is our guy. We're sticking with him. We press forward. We are thrilled. The Schwartz is with us. The Schwartz is strong. But this one. So, all right, let's get our last break in. 23:53Continuing our segments where we say nice things about other teams, going back east. I mentioned the Boston Bruins a couple times on this episode already. And yeah, so that's what we're going to do. Boston, what do you got for the Bruins? I'm going to go with a much less obvious route, but probably one of my favorite players, Nikita Zedorov, love watching him play. Big reason for that. And I'm going to tie this one into the family. My daughter's like first player that she latched on to. And that was because when she, yep, when she started playing, she was the, like, is the little kids, six years old, seven years old. She was the tallest kid out there because she was a tall kid. And so big Z automatically she gloms onto that. Oh, I'm going to be. And then because we have the same initials turns out, she calls me big Z. So I call her little Z.

24:53And then that gets to stick around. And that all comes out of Nikita Zedorov. And so I really like him. He's an awesome guy. Got my kid in the hockey. And now he plays for the Bruins, which just makes the Bruins a better team. How can Nikita Zedorov bring in a family together? Yep. Like, the big guy who's known for big bruising hits. He throws that body around. He's ginormous. It's almost like a forgotten era when he played for the, it just seems like it was so long ago. So long ago. Doesn't it? Yeah. And he is, he's just a, he's one of those, like Bill Romanowski guys, like just when you talk, when you hear it's like interviews with him. Yeah. He's just like quiet, calm, and then get him on skates and get him out on the ice. Or for Bill Romanowski get him out in the field. Something something something. Something works. It's just like that. I'm coming for it.

25:54Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I still like, I love watching him play. And so anytime the Bruins are on, I've always enjoyed being able to turn them on and see him continue to play. So yeah. Got to throw that one out there. Yeah. I always respect the Bruins. And it's odd because the other franchises that are associated with Boston. I can't, I can't stand so much. I actually like the Red Sox, but I can't do. Yeah. Like, I know, I've come to respect the Red Sox a little bit more. It was just it was just a Yankees Red Sox thing for me. Which is bare. Yeah. And, but the Bruins, I can't have always respected it. You know, they have the original six title, which again, I have my issues with that title, but it is what it is. It's a great selling point for the league. And they are one of them. But for them, not only the original six, they are the first American team to be put into the NHL. So they had that title at least.

26:55So not only were they the first American team to go into the NHL, they were also the first team to have a black player with Willie. Yes, with Willie O'Rea. So massive credit to them for doing that. Awesome. Obviously. Other players, I mean, you have to go to Peter McNabb. Of course. You have to. And I always got a kick out of, you know, went on the broadcasts for the abs. Just every once in a while they would bring up that fight of Peter McNabb going into the stands at Mass a Square Garden. And he went along with it. It wasn't like he was embarrassed to talk about it. He had fun with it. But man, like that, can it imagine if something like that happened today? Today, yeah. Really in any sport. I mean, with basketball, you know, you had to run our test one back in the day in Detroit. But with basketball, the fans are right there. So it's always a possibility that it could happen in the NBA.

27:58I guess you could say even with baseball, it is. You could say in some capacity like football, as if a guy really wanted to jump up. Hockey is a different animal because it's so difficult for the players to get over those boards and go into the stands. So can you imagine if something like that, like the Peter McNabb going into the stands happened today? What do you think the penalty would be for that player? Well, you're suspended for a long time. You think it's like, like, like, I mean, you can say the remainder of the year because what if it happened in like March? Yeah. You think it would be a full season based on when that happened? Very well could be. Yeah. There's no way the NHL stands for that. No. I don't know what you guys are suspended. Did he get suspended for that? I got I don't remember that part of it. I don't know what to do. Let me see. I'm going to look it up. Okay. While you're doing that, the reason I think the suspension would be big is I was at a national lacrosse league game where a player on the opposing team swung his stick at one

29:00of the fans and they had to like reset everything. And that guy was no longer playing. Yeah. Also that one I'm throwing out there. That was the fans fall. The fan was taunting to a level that just is gross. Like, yeah, it was bad. Yeah, almost deserved to get hit. You didn't that guy gets punished. Don't swing your stick in a fan. I get it, but my goodness. So what do you think, McNabb, got suspended for five games, six games. You were free or really close. Oh, wait. Now six games and don't forget the $500 fine. Yep. Well, yes. Six games are going into the stands. What a time. You get way more now. What a time. So obviously him obviously, Ray Bork, have to bring up Ray Bork. Just for the connections of the abs and Bruins, it just seems to be a connection with these two teams. And I've run into a lot of Bruins fans that are avalanche fans because of that.

30:01Because of the Ray Bork thing. And because you're on the west coast, you're really not arrival for them. So they have no problem rooting for you. So there is some connection there between Bruins fans and avalanche fans because of the Ray Bork getting him over here and getting him a cup. It's like they're really appreciative that he that we were able to do that for him. And in a sense, extension for them as well. So that's exactly the type of guy that needs a championship in his career. Yep. And then, even more connections here, when McCarrer signed his contract, who's you always compared to? Bobby Orr. And when we did this with Pittsburgh, we, when we were throwing out Mario Lemieux on, you know, if you're talking about outside of Wayne Gretzky, who's in the argument for best player of all time, Lemieux in that argument, Bobby Orr is in that argument. Some would even say you can include Wayne Gretzky and still have Bobby Orr come out on top. Yep. It's he was otherworldly.

31:04And I just wish I was alive when he was in his day. I am cool with that abin, right? One of the, man, I, maybe one of the most iconic images of all time when he's supermaning through the air. I mean, God, we should do that. We should do a segment on that on, on just sports images, the most iconic sport. And that, that's up there. And when I think that maybe like the Muhammad Ali one, he's, and he's got the arm like that. But those two to me stick out in my head of like some of the best sports images of all time, bar none. John A. Way, mid air helicopter. That play was, I'm trying to think of like the, like the image that came out of it was that, is that one of them? I don't know if there's like a good, just the still screen, like the screenshot of the video. That play to this day is just, I get goosebumps every time they, I know I love watching

32:08that. Absolutely love it. So, and some good ones. I know we should do that. We should do that. And then just in general, Boston as a city, I love it there. I love it there. There's always where I live. There's, there's, there's a, always like, oh, New York and Boston. I love both cities. They offer different things. But Boston is a much more calm city than New York City. I would be, I like that. Because I want to go to New York and have the hustle and bustle of that and sometimes like going to Boston where it's impossible to drive in Boston. They didn't really design it to be, to be driven. But it is just, like you walk the streets there and it's just, it's more like a neighborhood, like a friendly neighborhood than it is like a big city. So Boston, you always hear Boston fans are always like difficult on opposing teams, fans. I think that's only when it's like rivals. Because I've been in there for other games and they don't bother you.

33:11I think they get a bad rap overall. But don't worry, Yankee Jersey. Don't worry. Yeah, I wouldn't do that. Don't do that. It's a great city. Yeah, it really is. I got to go there. My, the guy that was the best man in my wedding took me out to Boston for my bachelor party right before St. Patrick's Day. So I didn't do like St. Patty's in Boston, but I was out there and went and saw the band Galic Storm in a, like Boston, a suburb kind of area was wicked, absolutely wicked. I see that just sounds like a Boston band. Yep. So, yeah, absolutely phenomenal. I agree. I love going to Boston. Yeah, man. Great, great city. So, all right, let's get to some subtext comments. I'm kind of bulking these together between the selky thing and the, the Bruins. So, let's see what we got here. I haven't read these yet. So, we got Mayor Vargar.

34:13He's got Anton Lundell for the selky. And the Bruins have a classic Jersey. Yes, they do. They do a good job with their thirds and all that other stuff. I think, you know, they do a pretty good job with those. And Zedorov. There you go. Zedorov. And he likes swimming as well. Fun fact, Anton Zedorov that I forgot. He is the only Boston Bruin to score a playoff goal with a broken jaw. Oh. So, there you go. I have no idea, but that's a, okay, I'm also going to throw out there. I didn't have a fact check this. This is a fun fact on the Boston Bruins Reddit, but, okay, we're going to run with it and take it as true because I like that adding to Big Z's legacy. Okay. Yeah, I don't know how you would track that, but congratulations, I guess. Yeah. And Mayor Vargarh also says Bergeron is maybe a top three, two way forward of all time. Yep. 100%.

35:13Joe, he says selky, I want to say Nelson, but it's probably not going to be him. And the Bruins have the second best active American born goalie in swimming. Yeah. All right. I do like that. Bear says, I think coming off an injury, if the Panthers return to form its bar costs award to lose, but selky will be in the discussion along with he sure. There you go. If Brock doesn't take a step back, he should get more consideration. And Boston, I don't hate them, but I don't really cheer for them. A lot of great history and players.
