#PODCAST Institute for Water & Wastewater Tech comment on the critically high levels of e.Coli in Durban beaches #sabcnews

By Newsbreak Producer Tashlan Naidoo - The Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology (IWWT) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) say it is very concerning that the critically high levels of e.Coli bacteria in Durban beaches continue unabated. According to the Institute's Director, Professor Faizal Bux, 11 of the 14 beaches tested along the Durban coastline presented extremely high levels of the bacteria. The beaches include, Ballito Tidal Pool, Westbrook Beach, Umdloti Beach, Glenashely Beach, Virginia Beach, Umgeni River, Umgeni River mouth, Laguna Beach, Country Club Beach, Bay of Plenty, and Addington Beach. The Institutes scientists advise beachgoers that these beaches should not be used for recreational purposes until the E. coli levels drop to acceptable standards. Professor Bux says the lack of infrastructure maintenance on sewage pump stations and wastewater discharge are possible reasons for these high levels given the lack of rain...
