I'm Walker male, and I'm also excited to talk some football, but like get real footballly with it. 13 personnel offensive philosophy change looks to be in store for Carolina. I'll discuss how it impacts everybody on that offensive side of the line of scrim.

We have made it to the end of preseason, regular season football right around the corner. The calendar has turned to September and so much to discuss on today's show. Take a look around the NFC South as the Carolina Panthers look to defend their division title. Definitely want to dive into what the 53 man roster told us ahead of a new season.

2:08Bryce Young so important for this man to have a great season for the Carolina Panthers. And we lead today talking about the preseason and what it taught us about this Panther Squad. Walker, let me go to you first man. How you feeling? Yeah, I think there are some things that I'm relatively okay with going into the regular season and the record is great. Like if you actually look at the Panther's preseason record, it has some kind of effect on the regular season. I don't know about how much causation there is there and rather than it being just a coincidence. However, it works out. Usually if you have a winning record in the preseason, it spells good things for the regular season. We can check that box. Defensively, I do think they started to play better, especially after that Buffalo Bills disaster. That's nice. I would say I'm worried most about the offensive line. I'm worried most about Monroe Freeling and the growing pains that the Panthers might have to deal with there.

3:08I like Rashid Walker well enough. The offensive line depth is a little bit of an issue, not for a lack of trying with all the money that they've allocated upfront to protect Bryce. So far, like kind of a roller coaster, 50-50 on how I'm feeling about this specific roster, going into week one against Chicago. I do think they are starting to get a little healthier. XL, out of his boot, he's back at practice. Jonathan Brooks despite him missing time because of soreness. Dave Canala said he's very optimistic that he'll suit up. I think this is just being extra cautious with Jonathan Brooks after two ACL surgeries. So I'm feeling okay. I think I'm just ready to actually see week one action. So I know what this team looks like. Yeah, yeah. I'm right there with you. My big thing with opening up the season, we got to start out fast. We cannot have that slow start like we had the last couple of years. And that's, we saw a little bit of that in the preseason, continue with the slow start to the offense. We didn't see much scoring. So I want to see Bryce come out swing and I want to see the offense come out swing

4:10in. But as long as that offensive line could hold for the next few weeks until Moten's back and we got a if it returns early on, we should be all right. But that early started the season where that's where I'm most concerned. We got to come out swinging like we have in the past couple of years. Yeah, getting off to a quick start is going to be so important. And I think when we talk about expectations going into a season, we had this conversation prior to the start of preseason. And I'm just curious for you guys has that changed at all after what we've seen knowing what preseason has turned into. Obviously, would love for folks in the comments to sound off on it. Their expectations have changed at all because let's keep in mind, this was an eight and nine football team that a three way tie. Fortunately, the math, math, the right way as I turn math into a verb for Carolina to be the team to get into the postseason. And it's not a given that that's going to happen as you start the new year. Yeah, man, I think with this team, when we went into training camp and Nick

5:14Scorton is out for the season after just a couple of hours, that's a real bummer. We all thought Nick Scorton could be a potential breakout candidate, especially with all the help they had up front for you to lose him such a promising talent within hours of training camp starting. That's frustrating. Team over the injury. Yeah, man, it's terrible, right? The blood clot for Taylor Moton, who is one of the best past protecting tackles period, right left, doesn't matter. One of the best past protecting tackles out there, that's going to be really hard for Monroe to switch from one side of the offense, a blind to the other and then get thrown into the fire. The way that is happening with Monroe, where Dave can Alice is outright telling you, it's not like you're in the job. We had to give it to him. Oh, yeah, that sucks when your head coach is saying that. So the injuries were a bummer. I had these conversations on Wes and Walker. Do we have enough injuries? Have we seen enough bad and joint practices against Jacksonville and Houston to actually change the way you feel about the season, maybe even change your win loss prediction?

6:16I went nine and eight to start the season after most of the off season, you know, with one week and a half a little bit more before we get to Chicago. I'm pretty much right there. I'm excited about the offensive philosophy change. We'll get to maybe next segment. I believe enough in Bryce. I believe enough in the wide receivers, team act who looks great. Jalen Copeland, Mr. Baller. I think that there are ways to combat some of those deficiencies that you might have, protecting Bryce up front and defensively huge fan of bringing in Bobby O'Kara, okay? I think it's a big deal to just have an average linebacker alongside Devon Lloyd, especially one that's been pretty good in coverage no longer can the offensive coordinator for the opposition just mash the easy button and say, let's target that guy in the middle of the field. That's a big deal to me. So I think when it all comes out in the wash, I'm still right where I was at the beginning of this process. I'm kind of feeling barely above 500 season, but above 500 nonetheless.

7:18Yeah, anything less than that is at disappointment after last season. We got new pieces. We got guys that look like they're going to fit our system. Also I'm a big fan of Bobby O'Kara, okay? He's attacking machine. He's putting him next to Devon Lloyd and the inside, having those guys behind Derek Brown, we should see that defense take another leap over the last year after just two years removed from a historically bad defense. There's potential that we are top 10 this year. I was before the preseason. I was at that 10-11 win just to see that growth. After what we saw in the preseason, I'm right there with you with that 9-10 is the optimistic. Again, if we start out, if we come out swinging the first two games, then I'll probably change my tune. But right now I'm at that 9-10 wins as our ceiling just based off of our preseason performance. No coach wants to outright say that one side of the football is going to carry them at this time of year, right? Before a game has been played, you're hopeful that the head coach is not saying, our

8:21offense has got to get it done or really relying on the defense to get the job done. And Mike, as you said, the last few years defensively has not lived up to where you thought the Panthers should be. Walker, we've talked a lot about conversations regarding the coordinator change on that side of the football at the end of last season. And yet now as we sit here going into a new year and starting to kind of think about the expectations, if it were the offense or the defense to kind of carry Carolina, this year, truthfully, I'm stuck in the middle. I'm having a hard time figuring out where this thing could go. And it's a little surprising because a few weeks ago, I might have thought it'd be the defense considering where the injuries on the offense are. Yeah, Mike, I don't know where you are either. I'm going to go defense. I think you have a decent amount of talent coming in from the off season with two big time win now moves. Jalen Phillips raises the floor of your pass rush. The big topic of conversation about Jalen making $30 million a year is with the traditional

9:24stats. He bring down the quarterback, forget the pressures, the advance metrics, I value that. But I do understand that you do want to see your $30 million your guy bring down the quarterback because pressures on good quarterbacks still lead to reception, still lead to points. So we need to find a way to bring him down. I think Jalen Phillips, even if he only gives you only gives you eight sacks, that's still a floor razor for this past rushing unit. So you're undeniably better because of his presence on the team. And of course, we're excluding health in this conversation. Devon Lloyd, I think that might be one of the bigger position upgrades made by any team this off season. The guy that was starting last year got cut, did bring it back. Tremend Wallace just got waived. Christian Roseboome, who was the other linebacker that started with them. He's with Tampa and he's not going to start for the Buccaneers. He was targeted a ton in coverage. So you go out and you get an all pro in Devon Lloyd. And I saw who it was, it was Robert Mase on the ringer discussing how Devon Lloyd is

10:26already becoming a coach out there on the field, discussing with the Jeroa Vero. Hey, when we bring this look, let's disguise it. Why are we doing it this way? I think I have a different way that we could possibly deploy this defensive look. So he's already changing stuff. He's already. I love to hear that. You know, like a coach on the field, that stuff matters. So you've already got massive upgrades with Phillips and Devon Lloyd on the team. I love the outside corners. We all know too well in JC Horn and Mike Jack. I think that we have just enough depth everywhere else that this defense, you got some real players on that side. And again, Ocaro K coming in as that second starting linebacker, I described it as this house of cards, right, where I like the defense outside of LB2 because offensive coordinators would just target middle of the field constantly. And so you would have this one wrinkly messed up card that would bring down the pyramid. That was LB2. I don't think Ocaro K is going to be that even with, I think his worst season in the league

11:27to this point last year, even still, man, we just needed somebody average. And you certainly got somebody really smart in Ocaro K. I think the defense is the unit that's going to finish ranked higher in a bunch of different categories compared to the offense. Yeah, again, right there with you. I hope I'm not echoing that the whole time. The offense, I think it boils down to Darren Waller. Honestly, I've made a couple videos about my expectations for him. I really like the signing. I really like Waller. There's questions. The dude's a cheap asset. But if he could open up that middle of field and give price that underneath that intermediate guy, I mean, I could see us go back to, I'm throwing like I'm going back in time a little bit here to that fox ball of run the ball, have those short passes. And then we know Bryce could throw the deep all. He's as good as anybody in the league when it comes to it. So have that get opened up. But again, we have to have some production from the tight ends. If we don't, then we could see more of the same as last year. So that we need that somebody to step up. We got five tight ends on this roster.

12:28We just need one of them to make a splash. Yeah. And every side of the line of scrimmage has question marks all across the league. But what can you bank on the most going into a game weekend and week out? I think defensively, last year, they were 15th and 16th in points per game allowed and yards per game allowed, which again, those are traditional stats, DVOA, which is a catch all advanced metric that is used to describe the actual context of the play. They were a little bit further down in DVOA, even still they were much better than the previous two seasons. They have not had a very good defense going all the way back to the last playoff appearance in 2017. I think defensively, you can bank on a couple of those players. I just mentioned being good football players pretty consistently. I like the corners, right? You feel pretty good about a bunch of different guys defensively offensively. There's a lot of uncertainty just how much of a leap this team act may jail and coaker can he stay healthy throughout the duration of the season and really be that wide receiver

13:30too that I believe in, but we just don't know quite yet. Offensive line, we got a rookie on one side, we got a newcomer on the other, they got paid swing tackle money. And we still have the question about your quarterback and Bryce Young. There's a lot of uncertainty offensively, even if you have some faith that they're going to perform, I think there is less uncertainty defensively, which is why you probably feel better about that unit. Yeah. To your point, though, Walker, I'm thinking about the stats that you want to keep bringing up and the pressures of it all and that sort of thing. And Mike, I don't know about you. Let's keep it simple, right? My thing, if we're having to go to, like if you're having to pay a subscription to know what the stats are, right? Like if we're pro football, football focus all the time to get like what happened to just a generic box score? Do you sack the quarterback a lot? Are you getting interceptions? Are you limiting the total yards that a defense has given up? I don't think it has to be that difficult. No, no, no, you shouldn't have to go dig in for stats to help out. I'll let your case. Absolutely not. Do I need to stop?

14:31I need to stop paying my subscription for pro football focus. I'm looking out for the people who, you know, their wallet is not being used to be an NFL fan in terms of looking at statistics. There's a time and place for them certainly. But yeah, just over the last few seasons, I don't know, bring the quarterback down, get turnovers. Yeah. Look, Jaylen Phillips, he showed, he showed in the preseason. He brought down Josh Allen on first, the second drive of the game. Like he's, I mean, coming into Carolina, he was, he was brought into, to cause those pressures. He was as good as anybody when it came to doing it. But the thing is bringing the quarterback down. That's the step that he has to make to earn that contract that he got with Carolina. No, it's a good point though. In the preseason, Jaylen Phillips balled out in the very limited snaps that any of these starters are really getting. Devon Void was also fantastic, which is nice to see that there's no settling into your role. No, it's already, we are the best defensive players on this team alongside Derek Brown,

15:31Mike Jack and Jayce DeHorde. We're not settling into our role at all. So it was great to see them on a limited snap count play very well. But I'm going to have to read, adjust some things here with pro football focus. All right. Let me get rid of some of these pressures and some of these hurries and QB hits. I promise I won't make it anymore. Well, I'm excited because Walker, what we need to do is we've got a quarterback question on our hands with this franchise. So while I might be more inclined to look at passing yards, touchdowns and interceptions, maybe there are some numbers out there that could help us tell a better Bryce Young story and stat as we go into the 2026 season. We felt as we talked about some impressive play in preseason on the offense and defense side of the ball and very limited play from quarterback, Bryce young, B Y nine. What does the next season of his career look like knowing the number one overall pick

18:35from the 2023 NFL draft has a very big financial question that he wants an answer for this franchise wants an answer for. One of you fellas. Take us. Okay. Yeah. Sure. So this season I touched on it earlier. He's got to start out strong and it's the biggest factor is the obstacle line. Those first few games until we get healthy. If you can't protect it, we saw what happened. It's a rookie season. That was not all his fault. Take it hits as soon as the snap was made. We got the interior line solved. But Monroe, he's going to have those growing pains. That's going to be the telling point on the season. But again, preseason, he has a clear connection with a team act towards the second half of the last season, really, really stepped it up. I expect that to carry over into this season as they have a little bit more chemistry. And then a guy's like a Jimmy Horn. He was a firecracker. He was a spark in the preseason.

19:35He's got speed. He could return ponds. I know that doesn't touch the offense. We're going to have some creative wrinkles in there to help him out. And again, the tie down position, it's all about the other guys. But I think Bryce has it in him. We see it in the fourth quarter. He's got to do it the first half. He's got to do it the first three quarters. Yeah. What does a Bryce Young season look like? I think it looks like a season full of improvement. I think it looks like a season where you see more consistency. And both of those things clearly are needed. If you're going to pay him $50 million a year, some type of franchise quarterback money. I do think you're also going to see, depending on the offensive line, still might be a little shaky because of the injuries and some of the new you have in there at the beginning of the season. Even when Timo comes back, whom I love, you don't know how much rust there's going to be, especially for somebody as old as Taylor Moten. Sorry, Timo, if you're listening. Iki Iki Iquano, apologies. Iki Iquano coming off the Patelertendin injury, like how much rust is there if he comes

20:36back and he takes over Rashid Walker's job. The offensive line is a real issue, but I do think that this offense and the talent is formidable enough to evaluate who Bryce Young is as a quarterback. I also think the season, you're going to see a lot more explosives. Simply because you have to, like they got a challenge more downfield. I really want to utilize that skill set for T-Mac that was showcased a bunch in college. I think they tried it early. They came up empty on a couple of shots to them. They were either penalties, T-Mac would try to grab it with one hand and that was a little frustrating, couldn't haul it in. Then they went away from it a little bit in the middle of the season. I do feel like they went back to it. Tampa sticks out in my mind where you found T-Mac down the field against the Buccaneer. Same thing with Jalen Coker, both those guys. I think it was Jalen Coker. A couple of those guys started to get rolling downfield a little bit more. The explosives are going to happen and we can get into more 13 personnel talk because they kept five tight ends.

21:38Brad Edzick, Dave Canal has both talked about the Rams being really successful with 13 personnel, which basically is one running back and three tight ends on the field. The first number of the digit represents the running back. The second digit represents the number of tight ends. 12, one running back, two tight ends, 13, one running back, three tight ends. The Rams used that formation over 30% of the time. Nobody in the same stratosphere as LA. So I think because this is a copycat league, you're going to see a lot more offenses go to the Rams playbook. The Panthers ran this at the eighth highest rate in the NFL, but even still that was like at seven and a half percent of the time they were running it. They ran a lot out of this formation, but I think they're going to hit you with play action. I think that they're going to explore down field off of the play action in 13. And this is where the tight ends come in to the point you mentioned, Mike. This is why I think people are even sleeping a little bit more than you would expect on

22:41a guy like Darren Waller who has had so much success. People will say that he didn't play much in Miami. The snap count was so low. That's true, but he was really effective in that snap count with Miami. Nobody's asking for retirement. Yeah, right. He was out of the league. And it's a good point too because he talked about how he was not in good shape. And then here he talked about how he took a week off after the season and went on vacation and he's been at it every step of the way. So he's been in shape. He's much more well-conditions now than he was back with Miami. This is when you start to explore Darren Waller down field a lot more. I think Bryce is at his best cooking in the intermediate part of the field. That's where team act is at his best. Jalen Coker can win there and Darren Waller lives there, man. So you send guys down field, then you open up some underneath stuff for a John Mechie or even a team act in the slot. I really like this shift in offensive philosophy for Bradadick and to bring this home. I think it's going to help Bradadick and Bryce Young.

23:42I think it's going to help the quarterback. If you could see the yards per attempt start to climb that number for Bryce Young. I think you'll end up in a better spot. I think Bryce can be more effective as you guys are saying. I certainly agree with the intermediate routes of it all. Crazy to think that a decade ago, we're talking about an entirely different fella under center, much larger human being like night and day, like the exact polar opposite of who Bryce Young is. And in some ways, it feels like yesterday and you look in 10 years have gone by. That's a top quarterback, winning an MVP award. And here we are in 2026 guys with a big quarterback question on our hands. And it's difficult to say whether or not this could be a top half of the league quarterback that the Panthers have under center. Like that has to change. Like there doesn't need to be hesitation when trying to figure out is Bryce Young not the worst quarterback in the NFL? Like we got to find a way to move the narrative about him amongst his peers. I think that's going to be equally important in all of this as well.

24:44And ultimately that obviously comes down to his play. Yeah. He's not going anywhere this year. He's going to be a quarterback again next season with that fifth year option. But if we're going to pay him big money, this top 10 quarterback money, that takes away from the rest of the team. Like these spots that we're filling with the Devon Lloyds and the Jalen Phillips, that's because Bryce is still on that rookie contract. If he's going to get that extension, he's got to prove that he's worth it. And he's worth a top dollar in the NFL. Yeah. And I think with Bryce, the easy decision last year was to pick up the fifth year option. I think don't really have to talk about it all that much. And then the real question was, are we trying to get to a future contract early? Or are we just going to see how all of this plays out? I think it under discussed part about a potential contract extension with Bryce. Was the fact that maybe Bryce doesn't want to sign it. Carolina might come to Bryce and say here's a $35 million dollar year contract, which is low end QB1 money. But if you're Bryce, you don't want to sign that.

25:47Why wouldn't you bet on yourself with better pieces around you? It's the second year that you develop chemistry with the offensive rookie of the gear and T-Mac and Jalen Coker. You raved about this entire time that he's been in the building. So if you're Bryce, you can bet on yourself to maybe you get $35, $3600. Could we flirt with 4,000 yards? That's a little bit harder to do now than it was maybe like five years ago. Not many QBs actually passed the 4,000 yard threshold last year. So even if you're flirting with that number, that's going to bode really well for you in being the franchise quarterback here. But there are a lot of things that Bryce needs to improve on. And really what's frustrating is that you mentioned this, Mike. The accuracy downfield is quite good with Bryce. We just did not see the volume. And a classic conversation we had in sports radio in Charlotte was who isn't throwing it down field. Is it Bryce literally deciding not to? Is it Dave Canales? Not calling the plays?

26:49Is it Dave Canales? Rightfully not drawing up down field options because he doesn't trust his offensive line to hold up long enough for Bryce to hang in there and then let it fly down field. Whatever it was, we got to get back to it. We got to get to it, period. And I think they will with the new offensive coordinator. And I think you'll start to see Bryce start to explore 20 yards past the line of scrimmage with these options that he has on the roster. And I think the volume going up with those throws, like especially on play action where it was only like 4.8 average depth of target. Like that, that was a whole yard less than second worst in Aaron Rogers. You just, you can't rely on all these dinks and dunks because the margin for air is so slim on these 12 play drives. We got to start scoring in like some five, six, seven play drives and hit some of those explosives. I know I brought up the former quarterback and I understand where he played college football and where I have a college degree from, right? That's not what this is. I very much so want the former Alabama high-spin trophy when he quarterbacked Bryce Young

27:53to be able to turn this thing around and prove he is the guy. Big fan of him, the way he speaks about his teammates as you guys have said, this coaching staff as a California kid feels like he's really bought in to the Charlotte life, right? You see him court side at Hornets games and around in the community and whatnot, like really wanting to be that face of the franchise type player. The one element of all of this before we get to our next break, you fellas, offensively speaking, it was the ground game last season with Chuba Hubbard and Rico Dowling what they were able to do. Jonathan Brooks, the injury concerns are always going to be a topical conversation until you just have enough games of him playing. I do still believe, and I think every football person out there would tell you running the football can make your passing game so much easier. What does that look like for Carolina in 2026? It's kind of strange that that's a question mark right now. Yeah, we have these three running backs with Chuba Brooks and AJ Dillon.

28:57AJ Dillon, I'm fully expecting to be the short yardage guy, the goal line guy, but I think we're going to lean even harder on the run. Dave Canales, ever since he joined Carolina, he's always been preaching the run. We're going to have that 13th person out there. I think we're going to maybe we'll see some wishbone. We should be seeing some multi running back, Dan Henning days, but we should, yeah, we should see some more. We're Brad Hoover. Brad Hoover. Yeah, but I think that we're going to lean heavily on it. Have those first have Chuba, have Dylan, wear down the defense. The goal is to have Brooks be that splash guy. He's the guy that could break it, but he needs to stay healthy. And we haven't seen that yet, but it's I think we're going to see a lot of running and a lot of trying to control the clock. We keep we control the clock. We have that that might fight us on those downfield passes. We might only have one or two again if that is the strategy, but we keep we keep the other ground game goal and we keep the we keep the ball. That's going to keep games close. That's going to keep us in the game.

29:57That's what I think they did a lot of last year. And if they could control that a little bit more this season, they it's all about the protection and getting through, but we got the personnel to do it. They have to line. That's always going to be the biggest question mark until we see what it looks like. Good news is you have your guards. You have Damien Lewis, who has been fantastic ever since coming over from Seattle. Rob Hunt has been a better run blocker than he has been a pass protector. He was out pretty much all last year. I think having Rob Hunt back in the mix is going to help this run game quite a bit. What's interesting is like maybe outside runs aren't going to be as successful because Taylor Moten, it's not as strong to but I think he's fine. Iki, it is a strong suit. He's a better run blocker than he is a pass protector. So like when you have Rashid Walker and Monroe Freeling in there, even with that Monroe Freeling athleticism getting to the second level and taking on some linebackers might be nice. You got to beat the initial line of defense. And if you can't do that well enough clearly, you're not going to be able to generate

30:57enough yards in the run game to open everything else up for you, which obviously makes prices game a lot better, which J.J. that's your point. I will say I think the running game has actually been pretty good this preseason. I really like the way Jonathan Brooks looks. And it's not even just that they're splitting him out wide and that they're going to have him be a big part of the passing game, which I'm really excited about. It's just a different archetype that we haven't had in a while. Rico Dowd was okay at it. But even still that wasn't his strong suit. I think Jonathan Brooks is going to be very good at it. Even more than just the being the wiggly running back that he is, he's been fallen forward. I think he's taking on tacklers. I don't think he's shying away from him. I really like the fact that he's lowering his shoulder pads and he's hitting the whole hard. I really like what Jonathan Brooks is doing just from a physicality standpoint. And what is good about that too is now you don't become predictable based on what running back is in the game. You can have Jonathan Brooks in the game. And we still might run between the tackles, even if Chuba might be that first and second

32:00down guy more often than what Brooks is. And Chuba, like his whole thing is how hard he works on the jugs machines every day after practice. He stays very active. He's from his rookie season. You know, like, and it's never been something that he's been great at, but he's gotten adequate enough at it. Like he's totally fine catching the ball of the back. I like not being predictable in that regard. And I think Brooks and the physicality really helps with that without a doubt for this team going into a new season 10 days away from that game on September 13 against the Chicago Bears. JJ Mike and Walker with you here, 53 men found out on Sunday that they made the Carolina Panthers roster some super obvious selections, some head scratching ones. Walker, why don't you go first here in terms of the head scratchers? Who would that be? So nothing crazy surprising. I guess I did not expect Trevin Wallace to get outright cut. So the conversation surrounding Trevin Wallace coming into some of these last preseason games was whether his starting job was on the line because Dave can Alice was asked about Claude and chairless right behind Trevin. If he had a real shot at this thing and Dave said, yeah, open competition straight

35:03up. It's between these two guys and we'll see how they play. And it's not like Claude and outright took that job away from Trevin, but it just never felt like Trevin also showed you why he should be the starting linebacker after being the third round pick out of Kentucky a couple of years ago. And they passed up on some pretty interesting talents around here. Everybody wanted Peyton Wilson, the NC state standout, who was excellent, real bad injury history, but he was awesome. And the combine was great. And they decided to roll with Trevin Wallace. And I understand it because the injury history, but Trevin got cut after two years of Carolina Panther football. I did not expect him to be off the team entirely. I think the reason they cut him was one, he didn't want to get in the job done as a starter, but also they kept Claude and chairless over Wallace because I think chairless brings them special teams value. And it's interesting to see just how much special teams value was the kicker. But more so than usual, I get you got to feel the special teams unit, but it feels like Felipe Frank is somebody they love who Dave can now is called

36:07the best special teams player in football or one of them. Now they're also trying to make him a part of the offense, possibly like they threw him a few passes and training camp more so than I think people thought. So Felipe Frank is here because of special teams. I think there are some wide receivers on the roster, um, instead of David Moore because of special teams. And I think that's true of Claude chairless who's a physical downhill smasher. And that's just not the way that I would describe trevine. So if you're looking for one kind of biggest surprise that got cut, I think it would be trevine. That's on the outside looking in. And now he's with the jets kind of funny enough. He's with the jets. Claude and chairless is with Carolina after the Panthers claimed him off waivers when the jets released him. So these guys just kind of switched spots after a couple of years. Yeah, I was, um, mind's not so much a cut as much as it is a keep with that I've tied ends. I did not think that we were going to be keeping a JT Sanders. I thought he, uh, he ran his, uh, course with Carolina after that rookie season,

37:09uh, that injury. We haven't seen much production out of him last year. Didn't even barely even heard his name during the preseason. Darren Waller. He is a, I thought he was going to be redundant. They have a very similar skill set, but he's still on the team. And it sounds like they plan on keeping five tight ends on the roster. I thought there was a chance that he was straight bait, but that's not the case. And the wide receiver room, that was something that I was watching closely. Uh, I was curious what they were going to see. I, I was, I didn't know. Can all this was going to be willing to part ways with David Moore because of his relationship in Seattle and Tampa Bay and then here in Carolina. But I'm, I'm excited to see, um, Mechie. I wish he got a little bit of time with the starters and the preseason because him and Bryce, they had, um, when they were in college at Alabama together, Bryce is Heisman year. Mechie had 12 hundred yards receiving. And I want to see if that carries over to the NFL. I would love to see a little bit of action with those guys now with Mechie being solo in the depth. Might not be the case. You may not see it too much, but I wonder if there's still a little bit of that, uh, chemistry there. Yeah. And, and also when you go to the back end of the wide receiver room, Jacime Reed was really good.

38:13All right. He's along. Most beat riders, when they would give you the 53 man projection, I don't know how many people really had Jacime cut. I think maybe a hundred percent of the reporters had him making the squad. And here comes John Mechie. It's not because Mechie was so bad. Those guys were neck and neck. I thought Mechie played quite well in the preseason. You're right, Mike, like it really did come a little bit later in the games when you're going against the twos and the threes, but still you did what you were supposed to do against the person lined up across from you. I think if you were to really dissect why the answer was Mechie instead of Jacime Reed, who I thought was a little better, emphasis on little, but I did think he was better than Mechie. I think you keep Mechie because he's a different style receiver. If you look at how Jacime Reed wins, it's physical at the catch point. He catches everything thrown to him, which is great, but he's not much of a route. You up five to 10 yards past the line of scrimmage type of guy and keep the sticks moving.

39:13It's you stick it in here. I'll catch it and out, out muscle this guy, but it's kind of an overlapping skill set with Jalen Coker, who you're going to be looking to more so in those situations than Jacime Reed. It might be a nice replacement for Coker, but that's a good point. But I do think the other thing is they didn't think Reed was going to get claimed off waivers with Eric Eager and sorry, JJ. They got some analytics guys in the front office that's helping them out, but they have this model. They talked about a formula on guys that are most likely to get picked up off waivers. I think they felt safe enough with Reed to go through waivers on claimed, come back to the Panthers practice squad. So they could go to him if Coker ever goes down and you have that skill set and you keep Mechie, who is again, shifty. And I think can be a nice check down guy for you. And I do think there's probably just a little bit to the Bryce and Mechie relationship, where it doesn't mean that they would keep a fourth wide receiver because Bryce told

40:15them to, but keeping a sixth wide receiver and there are a couple of guys are neck and neck and Bryce says, I kind of rather have this guy because of a relationship. I'm not saying it did happen. I'm saying that wouldn't surprise me either, especially with it being the sixth receiver rather than somebody in the top three or four. Yeah, they really tested Mechie that that came against the Jaguars. Sorry, sorry, JJ. It's a, that's, I think that's what sold him and sold the team. I'm keeping on that third quarter. They, I think it was six catches 77 yards. If I remember correctly, they fed him the ball, wanted to see how it respond. And he caught everything that went his way, really showed that he could stuff up in the opportunity. I think that's where he held on to it. Well, good on him to take advantage of those opportunities and make it a really difficult decision to cut him much like Dishim Reade, having those touchdowns in the first two games of the preseason offensively in the skills department. The runny backs are the last piece of this conversation. Three players making the 53 when you look at Chubahubber, Jonathan Brooks and

41:16AJ Dylan, Trevor, ETCN, HN now as we've learned is the kickoff returner from last season. He's not a part of the initial 53. Now he's kind of factored into the IR. Didn't really see that coming. And the return opportunities is going to be something that's interesting when you look at all of these skill guys that you have available now to go back there. And I think his job is up for grabs because the way Jimmy Horn is playing Trevor H. H. And kick return job. That is I really like what I saw from Horn. That was a guy that I thought could be a cut candidate at the beginning of camp, where not even at the beginning, but maybe just a little bit into it. We weren't hearing a whole lot about him contributing. We were hearing a lot about Dishim Reade. We were hearing a little bit about John Mechie. Of course, the starters, it felt like Horn was, I mean, quite literally the only guy not being mentioned out of all of the past catchers. Bryson, you're made getting love. Pretty. Yeah. Right. And they love Bryson, you're made because he's a big body wide out that's going to block for you.

42:16He's going to be in line. He's going to move the sticks. And so even if he's not flashy, valuable, just was never really a cut candidate. Jimmy Horn just balled out. And it's the way that he balled out. He gained a lot of weight, gained a lot of muscle. I think he's playing stronger. So I don't think he lost any speed and he's still dunking on guys. I think he's still catching in traffic and he's using his hands and I just, I can't say enough about the way that Jimmy Horn battled this off season, clearly put in all of the work was challenged after not playing in my opinion, all that well at the beginning of camp and then really turned it on in a way that's eye opening. I mean, he was the fifth receiver. He actually jumped the spot ahead, like not even really all that much of a cut candidate. And then I go back to just some of the return roles for him. I think he should be returning puns and kicks. I think he's better than Trevor H. Annis right now. How much of it was because of this entry that he suffered at the end of preseason? I don't know, man, we've seen some struggles from H. Annis.

43:19And I know they liked him. It's why they used the fourth round pick. I'm not saying you'd cut him. I'm not. I thought he might be a little bit of a surprise cut candidate, but it was still always going to be an odds on favor for him to make the roster. But I think Horne should be that guy. I think he's been very, very good. And so just really a tip of the cap moment to him. I really thought he improved the time. Walker, here you are talking about dunking on people and Mike's showing off the jump man logo on his chest. There you go. I wanted to go here before we get to our final time out. And Mike, let's talk about this as well. When you look at the 53 men that make up the roster, obviously your specialists are incredibly important and very relieving once again, going into a season, JJ Janssen's back for yet another year, but even in the kicking, even in the kicking department, a season ago, there was competition there. And what a relief that teams across the league are having to make crazy kicking decisions when we all know that these guys will end up playing somewhere for,

44:21I mean, kicker is a position that everyone wants to recycle every few weeks. And yet that's not necessarily the case as our guy Ryan gets ready for another year. Yeah, I am so relieved. Like this is this is the first time in a long time we're all the specialists. We don't have to worry. You see that you see the puns always landed inside the five, like the field goals. We had a 61 yard with Fitzgerald. I mean, people forget that he was a rookie last season. Like he played like a season, a season that like we and JJ, he's, he's always gold. He's he's he's he never flubs up, but it's, um, I just, I've I, I, I so many years of going through those kicking competitions that can know in the Bucker years and then we had to move it up from Bucker and it was seen how everything plays out. But a lot of that's one area we don't have to worry about going into the season. We are set in that area. Canals and the team, they clearly value special teams and it shows across the board. You're saying you don't regret having to cycle through Zanganzales and Eddie Paniero

45:22in a lindo maray anymore. Uh, you, you're saying you don't want to go back to those names. Those, those are some real sicko names that we all had to endure for so long. You know, like, Mara, like Mara and like, uh, Paniero, the thing is they, they were, they were solid, but when the game was, when it was coming down to a game, when he field goal, I did not feel comfortable with them knocking it through. I don't have that worry with Fitzgerald. So yeah, no, I'm, I'm good with, with the guys we got in there now. Uh, 61 yard field goal for Fitzgerald in the preseason. Uh, 57 was his long last year, his rookie season. So it is nice, right? Just, just to hit on a rookie where you're not seeing anything too crazy dicey to where you do have to cycle through some of these other veteran kickers, like you mentioned, J, J, it's so true, man. And it's something I've overlooked this entire time. I think the over under on how many times we've mentioned Ryan Fitzgerald on Wes and Walker, this entire off season, I would set it at one. I, I don't think we've passed one time. So we need to show more respect to the kicker around here.

46:23Well, who knows to me then for bringing it up? Cause Walker, I was going to say, just you don't strike me as an individual who allows kickers to impact your mental health that much. Uh, I try not to like, you guys are like, can if you let them, if you let them, that they will rent a room in your brain, man. Yeah. Well, rent free. Like they just, they say I'm not leaving. You try to make them and they decide that they're actually going to stay right there. But we did have to shuffle. I, you know, all the names that I brought up, the Joey Sly years, I get it, you know, we can try the 65-yard field goals. Those are fun. But you talk about not trusting a dude with the game on the line. We had to endure so much of Joey Sly. Like I, I am happy that Ryan Fitzgerald is in my life. I hope he continues to make me feel happy that he's in my life. Because the unfortunate reality is for these kickers talking about it, our brains and their brains sometimes it just takes one or two missed kicks. And then all of a sudden they are a head case. So best wishes.

47:25Ryan Fitzgerald, whatever you have to do mentally to stay locked in. That's what we're looking for out of you ahead of this new season. Well, fellas, what that being said, the teams in our division want the crown back going into a new season. So we've got to take a very brief time out and give you kind of a rundown of what's been happening across the division when the locked on Panther Squad Show continues. And here we are moving forward with our locked on Panther Squad Show. JJ Mike and Walker final few moments here in NFC South again, a three way tie with an eight nine record and it's Carolina who comes out on top with the division title. We look across the league right now and within our division. I can't help, but find myself so confused. Some laughs along the way when you read every single update about this Atlanta quarterback situation with Michael Pinnock's injury and what's happening there with two.

48:27Uh, we got to talk about those dirty birds first fellas. It's yeah, it's not been going well for them. It's I am reminded of Scott Fitorer's comment. All we have to do is drop a quarterback in the system and we're ready to go. It's been that way in Atlanta for five years now. They've had Drake London forever who is a real baller. Bajon Robinson, we all know what he can do. They've had all of the skill talent they could ever want and they've not had the quarterback the last couple of years to get the job done. And it looks like that is going to continue where two is competing against a guy with a torn ACL and he still can't beat that guy out for the starting job because he's not been nearly as good as you would have hoped. And it really shows you if you have to move on from your first read, then it's probably not going to go well for two. I think they're going to be the worst team in the division, I think with the quarterback battle, that's rough. Plus you lose your ed rushers. You lose one for the rest of the season with Jalen Walker in that injury. James Pierce, we actually got a suspension for him coming down from the NFL

49:30where Hilt Miss half the games. It's going to be eight game for James Pierce. So you're going to have your two ed rushers that you desperately needed help in. And you allocated premium resources to go get those guys are going to play eight games combined this season for you. And it's all going to be in the latter half when it might be too late. So I'm with you. If you want to start with the dirty birds, I don't think it's going to be very pretty down there at Atlanta. You'll have some you'll have some Drake London. You'll have some Bishon Robinson Kyle Pits. He's back still a dude. And he's, you know, he'll remind you that he's a dude every three years. Outside of that, it's going to be pretty brutal for Atlanta in my opinion. Yeah, I'm with you. I really got nothing to add to that. I covered everything I was going to say. It's kind of a travesty with the talent that they have. I was going to mention Kyle Pits as well. The guy he's a freak in nature. He should be performing every week. But if you can't figure out the quarterback position, you kind of in a rut. Well, then we go to Tampa who, you know, it's had the Super Bowl recently with Tom Brady. They move on to Baker Mayfield.

50:31And it had been a successful partnership for the most part. They've had some big competitive playoff runs. And now it feels like there's a lot of conversation about Baker's contract situation. There were Vita Vaya contract talks. She looked at their offense. My Kevin's is not there for the first time in a good long while. I don't know how Todd Bowles is still employed as we get set for another season here. Like uncertainty almost with what Tampa is going to bring going into the new season. Yeah, they, uh, they're either going to have a fire underneath them or they're going to implode like you saw how the second half of the last season went for Tampa Bay. They started out how and then they won two of the last six games. I think it was if they did not finish the season strong, all the drama that happened this off season with Baker Bowles is absolutely in the hot sea. He could be gone to quarter of the way into the season. If things go, go back. So it's a Baker does. He could ball out. He obviously can. He's done it in the past. It's a contract to your form.

51:31But that's the only chance I see Tampa Bay having is if he puts the team on the back, he's totally capable of capable of doing it. But it's hard to see happening with everything you went on in Tampa Bay. I, I wouldn't be surprised if they take a step backwards this year. That's how I used to feel. I've come right back around on Tampa. At first, I thought that there was way too much drama. I was out on Tampa or at least I thought it was going to be pretty tough for them to win the division. But I think I'm pretty solidly back in on them. Vita Vaya is such a huge player to bring back into the system. I put a lot of my stock or lack thereof in Tampa in Vita playing for that team. And the fact that they just decided to throw him a one year up to $30 million a year deal. Okay. Yeah, I'm sure that does play for Vita who's right back where he, we thought he was going to play at the beginning of the whole saga. I think he unlocks Kalaija Canci as more of this past rushing specialists inside.

52:32Now you have Ruben Bain who looks awesome. And it's one of those classic. How did he fall so far? Guy, the wing span, I get it. Like when you have a statistical outlier with the short arms for Bain, I do get being a little scared. I still think you probably just take the chance on that guy. And Tampa did it. And I have a lot of respect for their general manager and Jason Light who continues to draft good players. I like the secondary enough. There are still some question marks there. There are question marks at linebacker, but the defensive line, I think is actually going to be pretty good. I trust them. And then the Baker of it all, I'm buying into the quarterback narrative, the QB narrative on Netflix where they chronicle these guys all season long. Jay Daniels, Cam Ward, Baker Mayfield, Joe Flacco. Okay, those guys were all showcased. Baker was just battling about four different injuries every single week and still going out there and playing, which is why he felt jobbed when Tampa said, we're worried about your injury history. Yeah, because I keep going out there and playing injured, trying to get us to the playoffs.

53:36And I'm clearly not 100%. I think Baker's the real deal. I think as long as he's healthy, which might be a legitimate concern that he won't be. But if he is, I think he'll still be a 42 hundred yard guy or even more. I believe in the receiving core, even without Mike. I think they can piece enough just enough with the Buka who looks to be okay from this turp toe injury. There's still some uncertainty there. They loved Ted Hurst. I liked him coming out of the draft. They got a lot of guys to throw to the running game. It's like, I think I'm in on Tampa. That's the team I would say I'm scared of the most. Well, and you're the numbers guy, right? As we've learned here tonight. So my master teacher is shocked. Okay. Her jaw is on the floor right now. You know, it's it's got to be the reality TV enthusiast and me like all the strategy shows and all the gossip. That's involved that I'm talking drama. Okay. And I'm thinking this might not go the way Tampa wants it to. And then I look at a team like New Orleans.

54:36And only thing I'm really walking away is like, man, they really love Tyler Schuck. Like where are the bad story lines in New Orleans? Am I missing them? Yeah, I don't think you're missing them. I don't think they're reporting them. I don't think I don't think they're there. I think the bad if you were looking, I think the bad story lines are coming out at the beginning of camp. I think the Brian Bracy injury is going to be big for them. Jordan Tyson. I thought he was an awesome talent. I like pairing him next to Chris Alave, but the injury history. That was the biggest issue. And sure enough, he has a hamstring injury and he's on the public. They all miss the first four weeks guaranteed. He could be missing a few more games. I think that's a big deal to try to open up some of those that passes for Chris Alave and Joanne Johnson, who I do really like as a tight end. I think they have enough to really be dangerous. I do think people are going a little overboard. I've said this a couple of times. I think people are a year early on New Orleans. I think they need one more year before then there are real NFC South title contender.

55:39And then you can start really feeling good about all the work they've put in. They have some nice pieces on the offensive line. They've valued that over the last couple of years. It just feels like a year or two early with some of the injuries they're dealing with. And some of the youth that they're dealing with as well as you know, they had a whole bunch of old guys on the team last year. And like they're even replacing some of those older guys with still older guys, but like three years less older guys. So it's just this weird mix. I think it's a year early for New Orleans, despite how dangerous they might be. And we know that having lost to them a couple times. Yeah, I like that's actually the team that scares me the most. And it might be for the reason that you just said with us getting swept by them last year. They looked good against the shuck looks good. And you know what, maybe it's the superstition in me whenever whenever things are going bad for Carolina on a game day. I'll flip the hat around to get them to play better. But just it's the NFC South worst to first is a thing. It's happened many, many times. I think that did we go from worst this first last year?

56:40Was that where we yeah, we were. Yeah, I think Atlanta was last tech or maybe New Orleans. I forget who was last technically, but I think the math was mathing for you. It was a day, right? And maybe it wasn't mathing. But either way, Carolina was bad and they somehow dodged the last place finish. Okay. Yeah. But yeah, that's like, but maybe it's just that and just all the years past. Right. The teams leaping from bottom to top, but just seeing how they played against us last year, they had our number. Shuck looked good. I don't know a whole lot about the Saints outside of what I saw when we faced them. But I mean, if it's not us one in the division, the ones that scare me the most just because of how they played us last year. Yeah, house cleaning. It was the Saints last, by the way. So Panthers were five and 12 Saints were five and 12 in 2024. And the Saints, they were behind Carolina with another tiebreaker because it's the NFC South. And this is what we do. We have that. That's what I was going to say is that it's just it's the NFC South, right? Because it's I'm trying I'm sure I'm clearly struggling to find the words here.

57:42This is a division fellas where it's either three great teams making the playoffs really impressive football or everyone's laughing at the entire division. Like there's no just normal NFC South division where one or two good, you know, like it's one or the other. It's fun though. Yeah. It is fun. It's fun when we're on the right side of history. Yeah, it's fun when we somehow sneak in and we get the losses that we need. With no control with ourselves without having any control, it's fun when you find a way to back in to the postseason. So it's going to be difficult to try to figure out. I I like Tampa, as I mentioned, I know a lot of people are high on New Orleans. That makes a lot of sense with Chuck playing. Well, if you think he elevates his game, then yeah, like that might even be 80% of the battle. 70% of the battle. If Chuck goes from, oh, that's a nice quarterback. You got something to, oh, yeah, now we're not it's not even like an uncertain thing.

58:44He's a top half of the league QB every single week. If they get there and I like Helen Moore, I will say I thought that it was a pretty embarrassing coaching search for them until they fell backwards into Helen Moore. And I really like what he brings to them offensively. So there are certainly some reasons to be scared of them. No doubt. I think Chuck is a big reason why if he does take that next step. 10 days away from the first Panthers game of the season. It's hard to believe like this is the last weekend, fellas, before we get into NFL. Well, actual games. I can't wait to talk games with you guys. That'll be fun. You know, people are going to get to enjoy this Labor Day weekend. And then we'll have some midweek football in the NFL and the next thing, you know, Sunday, September 13th.
