Ohio State vs. Texas score picks, X-FACTOR predictions for primetime showdown

Obviously you're in Austin. Spencer, why don't you dive into your travel day because everybody cares about travel issues here on a podcast platform. Look guys, I don't complain about travel because I get to travel to cover Ohio sleep football for a living. However, the folks at Delta, there was a flat tire on our plane. It boarded at 1215. We'd be playing at 1225. There was no tire to change like a no fresh tire at CMH. So they had to drive a tire from Cincinnati. And for some reason they took the four hour route. It got there. They had to put the tire on in the pouring rain. Then check the brakes. And my arrival in Austin yesterday that was slated to be at like 230. So I could hang out in this pretty cool city for an extra day and get some work done and do some cool things on the ground. I was going to go scout out a place to do this video

Honestly, I love it typically, but it was pretty mediocre in and out right before I went to bed last night. It felt terrible waking up this morning. But I'll tell you guys this. 2:04They are our good friend, mutual friend Brandon being asked me on the book I show on Wednesday night. How I was preparing to go like go cover the game. I had to inform that I'm not going to be out the game. So I'll be here in lovely new upper Ohio just hanging out with my wife, eating some some abs and zirts before before during an after the game, doing our live updates, meaning the game for it as we'd like to be over on the lemon launch message board. So I'm doing great. I am not really affected. I have a high state lose, a high state wins. I can do what I got to do at home and then knock out and roll on the bed. You have to be out for an 8 a.m. flight. So that's a little bit more daunting to you. Yeah, but we're gonna we're gonna power through. We're gonna have a great time and we're gonna have full coverage over at Letterman Row dot com. Mick, we're gonna do the same thing we did last week, but it's gonna be X factors this time instead of players you need to play well. I know those kind of are one and the same, but also like, you know, X factor could mean like all it takes as one play to change the game. And as a result, I'm gonna be I'm going to take the guy that I have been talking about all week. I talked about him after on Saturday. I think the high state's X factor in this game is car a wilder just being a dude for the buck guys that defensive and if he just comes out and said X factor on the edge is able to get after archmaning whether it's in a rushman on their rushman set on third down or whether it's just in a normal set as in like a four three defensive and four two defensive and whatever it may be. I think car a wilder more than maybe a handful of players in a high state's roster has the opportunity to change the change the

4:06the result of this game just by himself. All right that's a good pick. He was a beast against ball state. That's ball state though. The Texas offensive line struggled last week against Texas state. There's some questions there. There's even more questions heading into this game. I'm super curious to see what Texas doesn't mitigate that because for all the talk about this Texas defensive line and how good it is like Texas is gonna have to be good up front on its offensive side if it's gonna win this game. Sark has I saw this staff from our friends over at inside Texas. Sark has one offensive touchdown against Georgia and Ohio State in his career um in the first half and that came with 29 seconds to go in the the cotton bowl on a wheeler out against sunny styles. So hey they got a matchup they liked they found it with jayden blue and they scored a touchdown on that play. That's it. So like they just don't score their first quarter stats are even more heinous against the buckais and the dogs. So it's just two like the standard bears of the sport when you're talking about what Texas needs to go up against um

5:08like if Texas can't block Ohio State this game's gonna be over because I was going to do what it needs to and it's got your my smith and I know Texas has camp Coleman but like I I trust Ohio State more if it can just hold up a little bit um then I trust Texas like if Texas can't block this game it's it's not gonna be fun for Texas and I know it's own game but like if they can't block uh we'll see um I'm gonna go to the other side of the ball I think the number one x factor in this game withable it I'm actually surprised you didn't go here because kari would have been on the board in the second round for you but that's okay hey you pick your flavor I'm not yucking anybody's yum here um Evan McEwen is the x factor of this game like straight up the x factor Texas has lived with the consequences of taking Jeremiah Smith away two straight years now two years ago it was carnell tape and amecahe buka in the cotton bowl doing some damage against Texas Jeremiah Smith had one catch for three yards the buck guys ran the ball extremely well

6:09kind of just up the middle they used they got an explosive when they needed one but on third downs they went to amecahe buka they went to carnell tape when they needed plays they went there and they were cool with Jeremiah being a decoy and all credit in the world to Jeremiah amid that insane sneak Elliott style CFP run and he was cool with being a decoy like credit to him he is a superstar he doesn't have to be a decoy and he was last year again six catches for I think 46 yards still basically a decoy because when they needed a shot play they knew somebody was double covering Jeremiah they got carnell tape one on one they went deep and hit a 40 yard touchdown basically to win the game because that's all they need it was really seven points because the Ohio State defense was doing things um right and in this is going to have to be big in this game too because he's done but just a bucket on third down like you can say whatever you want about him I think even the the most ardent bi haters would say he is a bucket on third down

7:12but the guy on the other side Devon McEwen who had six catches for 97 yards last week has to be good if if McEwen is good Ohio State wins this game so I think Devon McEwen is the number one X factor on either side of the ball for this entire matchup um I'm going to take a Texas guy probably in the second round but um yeah I just like I cannot emphasize enough how important McEwen is for this game that's a good good take my spend Thrat I are good friend that you did a podcast on the earlier this year we we got to know him a little bit Brooks Austin did a breakdown of Texas defense against Texas state and if you watch that if you go over there and check it out on his YouTube channel after you watch this video he showed a couple of things this Texas secondary is susceptible it's other than their offensive line that has a couple of questions the Texas secondary might be the most susceptible part of this of this entire Texas team especially just because really their best cover man is Grayson little tin who's going to be essentially a slot corner for them and he's a very good player he had a couple of reps against Jeremiah Smith last year where he looked good one probably should have been a penalty wasn't a penalty doesn't really matter

8:15Ohio State is gonna have to try and find ways to make sure they skimmer on him and they they giveaways with Brandon and maybe like you said get open on third down but I think that second corner spot especially for Ohio State is gonna put a lot or Texas gonna put a lot of their safety attention over towards Jeremiah Smith that second corner spot is able to like for Ohio State did kind of attack with Devon McEwen and he showed last week you said third down for Brandon and his Devon McEwen was also very good on third downing a couple of key conversions on that second drive to really get the ball rolling and get the offense flowing down there he has like trust he's trustworthy on all downs runs good routes explosive down the scene like I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Devon McEwen shot play at some point just because they can kind of get past these corners especially if they're looking so in towards Jeremiah Smith and if you can maybe get some stuff to bow jacks out of the backfield and Julian saying like maybe scribbling around a little bit in the pocket like there's different things that can get their eyes looking towards the middle and if that's the case Devon McEwen can get get kind of crazy on the outside so I like the Devon McEwen pick a lot I'll kick it back to you we'll snake this one that way you can have your Texas defender and board hero canoe like look the Texas in uh pass rush is really good okay they've

9:20got dudes that can rush the passer and it's not just uh Collins Simmons but Collins Simmons is that guy like he and more is gonna have to be great Phil Daniels gonna have to be great the Titans are gonna have to be great helping those guys you're gonna see some two man route concepts and stuff out of the backfield for the running backs um and maybe even stuff out of the backfield for the wide receivers because they know that they have to get creative because the Titans are gonna have to help with these with with with Collins Simmons like it's that's just what it is but Ohio State is going to try to run the football Ohio State ran the football on this Texas team two years ago Ohio State could not run the football last year because they didn't know the best running back on the on the roster was on the bench because they went into that game thinking that the top two backs were gonna be Donald and and peoples Ohio State didn't run the football well but they controlled the football and I think that is one of the things I was underrated about that game last last year is like no did they didn't run it well but they controlled it well and if you can control it well and run it well those things kind of go hand in hand most of the time I think Ohio State is going to come out and

10:24Pete this might annoy some people but I think the first thing Ohio State is gonna do before anything else is gonna say okay we're gonna run it behind our interior offensive line that we trust really well we're gonna make Collins Simmons think twice about rushing the passer because he's gonna be in third and three and not third and seven he's gonna be in second and four instead of second and nine we're gonna run it and if you can stop the run we will we will worry about your pass rush but we are going to run the football they ran it well on the second half I think they figured some things out I don't think there is panic about their offensive line in the run game as you the listener whose feelings are valid will use their words here your feelings are valid Ohio State fans I don't think Ohio State is as panicked about this offensive line as the fan base is they're going to test this off in this defensive line especially the middle you know is it doey is it is there a cushion there that they can find is it are they're gonna be able to run through this thing like the Texas linebacking group is super thin Tyler Horka of inside Texas in our Q&A that's coming out

11:28friend in the morning called it the weakness of the defense is the linebacking group just because they don't have any depth I am wondering how much Ohio State is even going to throw the ball early I think they might try to hashtag establish it so hero canoe is an x factor in this game because if they shut down the run with Maraud Watson and hero canoe and those guys like yes then Collins Simmons gets the tee off on philote Daniels and try to get to the passer then you talk about Julian saying having to manage things on a raucous crowd that's going to be the best crowd that the stadium has ever seen none of that matters if Ohio State is running the ball at six yards a clip and hero canoe is getting pushed around if hero plays well Texas is going to do well on defense so I I typically just stick to Ohio State players but I think hero canoe is one of the x factors in this game and it's just it just happens that he's a formal Ohio State player the entire Texas interior the Texas defensive line is fascinating because again Brooks Austin did a great job breaking down Texas defense they want to do lighter boxes and now some of that will be predicated on Ohio State

12:30breaking those tight ends and kind of having more bodies inside the box but if they go lighter boxes you're talking about having five on five guys on five guys when it comes to offensive line in the front seven or five guys on six guys and that's and that's an advantageous situation if your Ohio State at least that's what the buck guys would like to believe especially if you have this experienced offensive line so you have to be able to take advantage of it and the only way you really can't is if you don't win one on one tier of canoe might be there one of their better one on one winners on the interior of the defensive line so I like that pick a lot I'm also just if I comes back to me here and now my x factor thing and it kind of ties into what you're talking about it's a little bit of a triple dead but I might note the coordinators for a Ohio State because I think if you look down and line them all up when it comes to your comparing Matt Patricia the Ohio State defensive coordinator against Steve Sykes and the Ohio State offensive coordinator and play or Texas offensive coordinator and play a scholar and then Arthur Smith will must champ and even Robbie I don't know who really I think it's Jeff Banks I don't know who really is the special team sporter for Texas I'll touch on Robbie Dish with the end but I think Ohio State can win those coaching matchups with what they have and like just the avail like the talent they have at the

13:31disposal but I also really trust Matt Patricia in a situation against Steve Sykes and because Steve Sykes and has kind of been in these bigger games it's he does a great job script and he squats down and tries to call a play like he does a lot of different things that are Steve Sykes and like trademarks but he's also struggled against some of these better teams like you mentioned with the first quarter stat and the first half stat so I think Matt Patricia is going to have a good game plan and I think one of the more interesting things is again it was Tyler Hork I believe on the inside Texas offensive about her at least post of the quote Steve Sykes and said they want to play more they're they're 12 and they're 13 they like the tight ends that they have on their roster and I think if you're on Ohio State fan you you're curious about that because I think of a Ohio State really trusted one position union on its defense it's the linebacker core if you offer an opportunity to put three linebackers on the field I think he would prefer that than that rather having to put not that they dislike Jay Timmons but they really trust TJ offered Riley Petish on Christian Allegra a pain pierce like don't put three of those guys on the field and play man football against your tight ends and trust that they're going to be able to win so I think Matt Patricia is going to be into interesting spots and this is really the first situation

14:31obviously would have worked out better last week if you're on Ohio State's offense against ball state if you make that first drive go for a touchdown and everything looks a little bit more clean and crisp but this is really I imagine the first time that we're going to see Arthur Smith get into a script or a section of plays in the beginning of the game where against a like for like opponent and it's on Ohio State career and I'm fascinated to see how it looks against a guy like well it's must-champ who's very very established as being pro blitz as somebody that wants to kind of pressure and do different things so how does Arthur Smith really involve that throughout the game but also what does he come out with right away with the script and like Ryan Day has been good against aggressive defensive coordinators it's kind of the make you beat us defensive coordinators that Ryan Day has struggled against look at for inventables in the 2019 Clemson game look at his splits against Don Browne in the Michigan Pat defense versus that Mike McDonald tree that gave him fits and then look at what he did this past year to Wink Martin Dale who's a heavy blitz guy like yeah Wink got him in 2024 but I think that you know quarterback concussion

15:35um bad play calling things like that kind of trip them up day has typically done better against aggressive in your face louder defensive coordinators than he has against those methodical kind of approach defensive coordinators that's why Ohio State has struggled to score points against Pete Quikowski in the Texas defense is because he was a very like you're gonna get three yards a clip we're gonna bend we're not gonna break and so I was saying scores what 28 points but one of the 21 offensive points and 14 offensive points but against these aggressive attacking defenses that blitz a lot they play a lot of man they play in your face like Day has steamed up pretty well so like how does that marry with Arthur Smith who is kind of more of a little bit of a methodical offensive coordinator you know like I just think that's been in the back of my head for a while now it's like yeah Texas they've got this new aggressive defensive coordinators like well Day's kind of feasted on that now I could be proven wrong and that could be something that that just doesn't happen but like Ohio State has traditionally done well against those kind of defenses what does

16:38Arthur Smith cook up I think that's a fantastic point Nick credit to you because like these coordinators you don't you didn't hire Arthur Smith to beat ball state I mean damn you didn't even hire Arthur Smith to beat Maryland you hired Arthur Smith because you were an NFL coordinator you're going against college coordinators show it so like you know what do you got art like this is a good challenge for him it's a it's a critical test for him because if he's not going to be able to do it against must champ it's like okay well you're going to do it against Oregon you're going to do it against Gary Patterson who's a fantastic defense coordinator at USC you're going to do it against you know Michigan who has a new defense coordinator it's pretty good at a job even though it's the offense is terrible you're going to have to do it in the playoffs probably against one must champ again so yeah that's that's a great point um and then you get your third pick you get you get to snake back yeah I didn't mention the Robbie Dishar of it all there the I just you and I see him leaving the facility like a different hours doing different thing I have I have a hard time leaving that guy doesn't have an idea to cook up in his head that he will have readily available if I'll have say once it goes towards

17:39it also just think they had a decent amount of success last week with Phillip Bell at part returner there's also the and I I was going to ask you this on Wednesday I never did I if you're Texas and you're in a situation where you see legend bay back there returning kicks in assuming he's still back there are you still kicking it to him every time and I because I just don't really know that there's a very good chance you stop them at the 15-yard line but there's always the chance in Ohio and Texas notes about legend bay because he's from the loan store state like if you kick it to him there's a chance he could take it 80 on you and you're giving Ohio states offense a short field so I really don't know what the method would be if you're high if you're Texas on these kickoffs they could just boot it out of the end zone every time but the whole return game of it all I'm very fascinated to see if the Texas tries to because if you want to try and be aggressive you could try and go high to the legend bay every time and to see if you can run down and get something going but you can also burn you there yeah it's like hey you know be stupid be a stupid freshman like bring the ball out we'll give you we'll give our defense an extra 10 yards of cushion you know like if you kick it to him and it's at the three-yard line but again that's a risk so we'll see I don't

18:41know it's something that I've been pondering I've say since they're still working through that kick return I think that we'll still see legend back there so we'll see and I we put somebody said that you have to leave or you have to remove them because there's the opportunity that he could just like continue to make these decisions I think it was pretty clear based on how he like how he acted I think Ohio State kind of gave him the freedom of choice there on a lot of those kickoffs against ball state were the two of them that he had and legend just decided that hey I'm gonna I'm gonna go I want to go there's very much could be a situation here against Texas where Ohio says you don't have the choice if it's within what is the 10-yard line in the air the in the end zone you're gonna put your hand up and away for feel the ball we're gonna get the ball to 25 and move from there like legend's not gonna directly disobey what his coach wants to do I just think they gave him some freedom last week to try and see what his decision making abilities would be and obviously I don't think they agreed with them all the time well there's a little Russell Westbrook to him on Saturday against ball state it's like hey it's legend Baytime and who said that legend Bay

19:43but when legend said it and he was right you get a triple double you get that 25-yard you can wear untouched so we'll see I'm fascinated by who's your third technique you could go legend Bay for the third to pick here but I honestly do want to go a different running back just because I think like you mentioned earlier the establishing of the run and just knowing what Ohio State knowing Ohio State didn't play this guy against Texas last year and then it could be a difference in how the impact is the game I think Bo Jackson's one of the more fascinating players on what he could do on Saturday like we could you could get on here after the after the games over we could do a show he could have 105 yards or a hunt like 85 yards rushing and then like 60 to 50 to 60 yards receiving just by doing different stuff I think there's a good chance that or Bo Jackson whatever the number of his goes over 100 total yards of like offense just by obviously getting involved in different ways and him being honestly behind Devin McHughan and Jeremiah Smith is like the top two playmakers Bo Jackson's probably the third best player maker on this offense and you just kind of got to find out ways to get him involved because you saw it last

20:43week I I told Burm on the sideline last week when he had that run down the like down the sideline right into my face when I was taking photos down there but Bo Jackson can be as good as he wants to be it's kind of just about making sure Bo wants to be great every single time I have a feeling Bo's gonna want to be great when they go down Austin Texas and play a top team like Texas the Texas long weren't I also think like if you watch Collins Indians against Texas State some of the stuff that they did with him moving him around like they got him on a running back the Texas State running back just met him in the hole and made sure he wasn't getting to the quarterback like if Bo has taken the leap the leap that everyone thinks that he has you do not prove that well you do partially prove it with the 65 year touchdown running at ball state but you prove it by being a far better has blocker than you were last year you have to be good at chipping at staying on your assignment you have to recognize blitzes too and understand where to get to like Jacobi Jackson is directly

21:45responsible for a sack last week he got to the spot and just missed the blitzer and so they get july and say on the ground this week that's Collins Simmons so like Bo has such a large responsibility this week of like not just running the ball well which again I think they're gonna try but also like past protection my last x factor I'm not gonna talk about him much and I don't think there's much that needs to be said I think it's absolutely insane julienne in big games has not been at his best and I blame the offensive line for that against both Indiana and Miami but against Indiana I think he had his roughest game I think they put him in the picture form I think well must champ is going to watch that indiana tape and understand exactly what indiana did to get him off his rhythm the Miami game I blame more on the offensive line actually thought julienne played pretty well in that game considering what he was up against the indiana game he was not good like straight up not good and I think mustamp has studied that thing hard so julienne if julienne has taken the processing leap the mental leap the physical leap as well to get make place happen

22:49with his feet which he had against indiana and didn't take it has to come in this game I think he is ready for it I think he understands the moment we saw him play really well against michigan like he didn't do a ton because he didn't have to especially in the second half but like when they needed throws he made the one the long one to car and it'll take for a touchdown when they needed five yards he got six against michigan so he's done it before in a big moment on the road in front of a crazy crowd it's no different at Texas it's going to be way louder here than it was in the big house because the big house that the sound just goes straight up whereas I think dkr like they kind of built it in here last 15 years and made it kind of loud not a lot more needs to be said like what do you got ten like you got to play at your very best and if you get to ball in the fourth quarter down three go score touchdown cement yourself so you know I just think that that's that's something pretty critical all right that's enough we've we've talked this game we've beat a dead long lawn for months so let's get into it Mick our friends at polymarket I got the plane realized

26:05on this schedule I think Ohio State is going 11 and 1 this season for eight months I have picked Ohio State to lose Texas in Austin we did a season preview had to pick all of our games two weeks ago and I think Ohio State to lose in Austin two weeks ago the closer we get to kick off the more I question whether I can actually trust Steve Sarkisian against Randei whether I can actually trust Texas against the Georgia or in Ohio State caliber opponent and whether I actually think Ohio State will be affected by by the crowd here I cannot answer all three of those in Texas's favor so I have switched my pick I think Ohio State is still going 11 and 1 this year I don't think they're gonna win at Indiana I think
