2:08Welcome back to the Bill and Doug show. I'm Doug Lineries. He's Bill Landis. We are in Austin, Texas. Press box after Ohio State's 24-23 loss to Texas Longhorns blowing a 20-point lead. We came up, we just heard from Ryan Day, Julian Sand, Carson Hinsman and Jalen McLean. After this, Ohio State lost Bill Landis and I thought you made a great point immediately as we were talking about it, that they had a chance at the end with their strategy to maybe put this on the Ohio State offense to try to go win this game and Ryan Day did not choose to do that. And that does not fit what this team should be probably. And it kind of makes you question what they think they are. Yeah, I mean, it's certainly not what they should be right now and probably not over the course of the season. Not when you have Jeremiah Smith and Julian Sand. I'm not saying that we'll talk about everybody, right? I'm not saying the offense was playing great in a second half. Clearly it wasn't the fourth quarter,

3:09especially was terrible. But we knew the defense wasn't getting stops. And you asked Ryan Day, did you consider calling a time out when Texas got the ball to the one yard line with a minute 23 left, let them score and give yourself as much time as possible to then go and play for the win. And all that we need is a fuel goal to go win the game. And he said they thought about it and the decision came down to trying to let the defense get a stop. And that blows my mind. I don't understand it. I didn't get a chance to ask a follow up. I should have rudely interjected and asked that I apologize for that. That's me dropping the ball. The idea that Ohio State would be presented with a choice between putting its offense or defense on the field to go win a game like this. And it shows to you right or its defense does not make any sense to me. All the returning production is on their offense. The best player on their team is on their offense. The best player in this game is on their offense. And they chose to keep those players on the bench rather than put them on the field to try to go win it for them. I don't get it. I think I think Ryan Day had to have in his head when when Texas got the ball back.

4:11Late in the game with a chance to go on a game-winning drive with 4-16 left on the clock after the missed field goal from 45 yards. I think you have to have something in your head of how you envision this game playing out down the stretch. And if you get to a certain point, what are you going to do? And I think it's perhaps complicated and I think we can try to ask this follow-up next week. I don't think we'll be asking about Kent State. Delta. Oh, Ohio State had stopped Texas at the one yard line and each the last two wins over the long-marts. Famously, the scoop and soyer comes after Texas gets to the one yard line. And then they have negative plays that knock them back and then you have one of the great plays in Ohio State history. Last year, they wound up in the red zone and got Arch got to a fourth and one and they got stopped on a sneak. Right? The story of this series has been Ohio State converting in the red zone and Texas failing to convert in the red zone and it makes me wonder if that

5:13history was caught up in Ryan Day's mind at all. But I think if that's the case, that's a mistake because this isn't those teams. This defense isn't those defenses and Ohio State had given up two touchdown drives already. Texas marched right down the field on them whether they were gasped, whether it was the game plan, whatever it was. This defense was not in a position to win the game, but we saw what your my estimate had done all day. We saw what Julian St had done in the first half. The second half was very different. But I think you could almost be like, well, it's like giving up. But it's not it's you what what Ohio State and Ryan Day ended up doing was denying their own offense the opportunity to go win the game the way that Arch wanted because we say that all the time. One quarterback marches down and wins thinks he wins the game and then the other quarterback answers. And you should have had more than a minute for Julian St and Jeremiah Smith to answer when you would have only needed a field goal. Yeah, they would have I mean, you made the point that had the Ohio State done that perhaps Texas could have just taken a knee and then tried to run three plays from the three yard line and tried to win the game that that's certainly a possibility. I don't

6:16think Sarc would have done that. I think he would have just tried I think he would have just taken the touchdown and taken the lead and trusted his defense, which had played well for most of the second half to go win the game for them, right? I think what you said probably played a factor right the history of this game the last two years. I think seeing Connor Hawkins missed that field goal played a factor because like, do you want to put your offense out there in a position to go play for a game when he feel goal when you're kicker to start a chance to ice the game and didn't come close to making it, right? So like those are kind of ghosts coming back to the Hanoi State there too. In the end, I don't think any of it frankly excuses not putting your offense on the field. I think you can talk yourself through the thought process a little bit as to why they landed on that place, but it was still the wrong decision at the end. You can't have Jeremiah Smith standing on the sideline while whatever it was, what a minute about about a minute went off a clock when you could have given him that time to try to go win the game for you when he was the best player in this game. I can't believe that Mr. Fieldball. I think it's I mean, they can't believe it all high

7:17in the game. Yeah, new special teams coach, successful kicker in the portal, and it felt like New Year's Eve. That was that was a field goal. It was 45 instead of 50. Missed very similar fashion. The whole time it was never close in a world where we see kickers make important field goals at the end of the game all the time. I don't, it makes you scratch your head about what is is there something about? Is it just bad luck? Is it coincidence? Is there something about the way Ohio State trains its kickers? Mentally and physically, is there is there something about the pressure of being in Ohio State Buck guy? And this does not let everything else off the hook. The best way to over, you know, not put it on a game when in field goal at the end is to not give up three touchdown drives in the last three possessions for Texas. Right. But it is shocking that we are here given the adjustments and investments that Ohio State made. Yeah. Special teams in the offseason. I was having this conversation with someone at billenduckshow.com last week about college kickers. Right. And like,

8:19there's only so much technical coaching you do with the kicker. But like at all levels of football, just because like teams typically don't have kicking specialist thing, the best thing you can do is create an environment in your practice and your preparation that when that kicker has to go out there and make one like Connor Hawkins to make the go ice this game, he feels confident to make it. And maybe he felt as confident as can be and he still missed it. I think something is probably off like in that sort of like environmental thing about like just how kickers feel when they go out there for these clutch moments. It's not like they're, I wouldn't say they're like coaching the kickers poorly. But I would say like what how are you handling them during the week? Like how are you pumping up with confidence? How are you making sure that they're going out there in the absolute right state of mind to make kicks like that? Because I think we would all say that the last couple of years when they've had to, why say kickers have not been in quite the state of mind they need to be. Do you come away from this game or how much do you come away from this game?

9:20Like wondering what Ohio state is? A lot like especially defensively, right? This was you wondered about the ceiling of the defense. You wondered about when they had to get the stop when they get the stop. There were some splash plays in this game right? I thought like some young guys made some really nice plays. Jay Timmin starts the game with a fumble force fumble and recovery. Devon Sanchez made a great tackle. I thought Riley Petagion flashed really well. Obviously, Jermaine Matthews made a great play. Like there were moments where guys made plays and I think we came into this season sort of wondering if that might be a characteristic of this defense. But with that will come, they're just going to give it up a little more. And I don't know that you can definitively say that they're definitely going to give it up more than they did last year because I do think like fatigue played a factor in this game. That defensive line was clearly worn down. It's not an excuse to just what it was. I think they probably didn't handle their defensive line rotations well enough in the first half to make sure their best players could play well at the end of the game. So I don't know. I have a lot of questions about the defense. I like exactly what that

10:20ceiling is. Is it championship level? Is it more just like it's a pretty good defense? But when they got to go out there and stop lead offense, is it not going to be able to? And then the offense right now is Jeremiah and Julian. And they're going like Jeremiah is incredible played a great game here tonight. You need more than just those two and that like what what other receivers caught the ball today? Brandon has had one big catch early. I'm a few and a couple targets. I'm a few and a targets like Nate Roberts caught a ball. The running backs caught balls like they just did not get a lot of the out of the receiver position today. You didn't get what the running backs played fine. The offensive line was decent in the first half and not great in the second half right. So the offense is very sort of like one note one dimensional right now. It's strange that this one of the stories coming into this game was Ohio State had beaten Texas the last two times without maximizing Jeremiah Smith. And this is the one catch for three yards in the semi-final. Six catches on 10 targets for 43 yards last year. And here they are. I have a story.

11:27We'll never see the light of day at billandugshow.com about how they let Jeremiah Smith go beat Texas. Right. And he tied a career high with 13 targets. He was dominant in the first half and it wasn't enough. And it is you know I thought it has been an issue for Ohio State in these games and not getting the ball to Jeremiah Smith. And they did a they did an absolute instrumented job of it in the first half. They were two 43 yard plays were Julian saying put the ball up there and let Jeremiah Smith go make a play. Really nice ball threaded into the end zone for touchdowns sort of in between three defenders and you and I were talking about it. I said I'm not sure that's a throw that will Howard in 2024 in this game or Julius St. Last year would have made you gave Jeremiah Smith a chance. And then in the second half they did you know they they the third down slant that was incomplete where

12:27it was good coverage. It was a little physical. As the ball arrived there was the sort of the deep shot into the end zone where the corner sort of guided Jeremiah out of bounds and you ended up trying to die for the ball to go blind. They did like they kept going to him. I honestly like it through the course but I thought they're maximizing Jeremiah Smith and I thought it is enough. This is enough. Jeremiah Smith is enough to be Texas. Yeah. And it wasn't. And so there was a you know Devon's McHughan played well last year. Look good and played well last week. Look good and camp. Had one catch for five yards tonight was not a factor Julian Sand did miss a lot of potential touchdown Brandon has had one catch because not really a factor. I'm interested to see like how much those guys were open. It was hard to tell from our vantage point. It's always hard to tell on TV. So that's one thing. I like because there was even the one play where it was reminiscent of the interception of the little Howard through against Texas in the combo two years ago where

13:28we're Julian almost got picked off. He stared down Jeremiah the whole way. There's even that's that balance between like you got to make sure he gets his touches and you got to make sure you're not going with to him on every single play at the expense of other opportunities out there on the field. So I think they did a really good job of getting in the ball. He definitely made an impact on the game. I think he can't help but wonder with the benefit of hindsight. If there weren't some other opportunities to spread it around that might have, especially in a second half, like helped the offense get out of gear just help the offense get that. I mean, they need a one more score. They had it. They had it drawn up on the play of Devon McHughan and joined say a miss them. They also had it drawn up on the first 43 yard completion of Jeremiah Smith. He was wide open. If that's a better throw, he scores and instead they get the field goal at the end of that drive. So it wasn't like the like the offense was not humming the whole game. Jeremiah Smith was for the for the first half and Julian saying made some nice plays and hung in there and stuff. But even like there were things kind of like slightly skew in the first half that, you know, I don't I wasn't sitting there at halftime thinking like it's going to come back

14:28to get him when they're going to lose. But there were some missed opportunities there early. Even like Texas gave them some opportunities early, but then Ohio State missed some too and just ended up kicking too many field goals. This is Angus Maximus. There have been a lot of depth discussions around Ohio State and depth isn't always good. At least the way it's talked about because sometimes depth is a shorthand for we don't have superstars that separate them. So Ryan Day has even talked this season that he feels like there's less of a gap between sort of like the first group of guys and the second group of guys. And you can find good in that, but it's also you know who there's a gap between Caleb Downs and everybody else. Sonny Styles and everybody else. And I think, you know, this is the most depth they've had a receiver. Well, is it the most depth they've had a receiver or except they had the same kind of depth that receiver in 2021 except Marvin Harrison Jr. and Ameka Buka couldn't

16:35get on the field as true freshman because they had three first round picks at receiver. Right? So is it really the best depth they've had or is it the most the most questions among the stars that they've had? Is they have depth on the defensive line? Is it great depth on the defensive line or is it that there's kind of like a big mix of guys that are all kind of the same? They talk about their as deep at linebacker as they've ever been. Are they as deep at linebacker as they've ever been or is it just that they're willing to take the starters off the field a little bit more because the starters aren't Sonny Styles? I think depth is good. Depth is better than not depth, but superstars are good too. I think I think they have to start now the process of figuring out who has a chance to be really impactful guys for them and that can stay on the field more. I think that's a conversation and receiver about what is up with Chris Henry Jr. and Brock Boyd

17:35and are you going to lean toward them a little bit more? I think it's a conversation at linebacker. What is up with TJ Alfred and the Riley Petagion? Are you going to lean toward them a little bit more? I think it's a conversation on the defensive line of are you going to start turning carry carry Wilder into something more than an interior third down pass rusher because he's going to give you the most juice getting after the quarterback on every down. I think they have to start that evaluation process now because it's nice to raise your floor, but I think they got hurt the old Jeremiah Smith show to ceiling tonight. There wasn't a lot of ceiling. I think that's the thing like depth matters, right? Death matters in the long story of the season of high state chugin 2024. You need more than the 22 guys who are going to play to get stuff accomplished like that that matters. Matters less than a game like this. Your ceiling matters a lot more in a game like this. The ceiling your ceiling matters a lot more when you got to go play at Indiana and an Oregon loss but still Oregon Michigan at the end of the year USC.

18:40You're like that's that's when your your top end has to show and I think it showed a times in this game primarily in the first half like not really at all in the second half, but it showed in the first half to the point where you kind of like you were like they're going to run away with this game. I think like they were stark said in his post game press conference Texas was going to boot in the first half of this game and why you say didn't seize on that allowed Texas to hang in, gain a little confidence and then get rolling on offense and I think it's interesting that when when those moments did flash it was especially on the defensive side a lot of young players. So I'm sort of with you like I think I don't think you put guys on the bench now for like eternity but I think you got to think long and hard because I kind of felt rally pedig on played well tonight right I thought Carrey Wilder and a handful of snaps played well had that pressure on the fourth down on our charge made a nice way to get away from when they completed the pass right so it's not like these guys aren't ready. I actually thought Ohio State was going to play more young guys like legend

19:40Bay got one target and we didn't see him I think the rest of the game. I'm not sure we played more than one offensive snap like Chris Chris he wasn't a kicker turner Chris Henry and Brock Boyd played a handful of snaps to get the ball thrown their way defensively to did have Jay Tim is out there the dip hook they had a Carrey Wilder and something called me and called well as part of a package like they're doing it a little bit on defense but and it's not like this isn't one of those things were like well you lost the seasons over you might as well play the young guys I get them ready right that's not what we're talking about but I do but I do think there's a thing of like if this team which has a very tough schedule is going to win these games it needs to have a higher level of talent more consistently on the field rather than just like a high floor on the on the field most consistently right so we'll see if they approach it that way but I tend to agree with you it's hard you know Jay Tim is plays a very specific position right so if a team has two tight ends in the game I understand the idea what you probably might want to take Jay Tim as off the field except maybe he's too good to take off the field I don't know well the thing like I mean like he's

20:45playing better than Peyton Pierce right so like if the option is put Peyton Pierce or Jay Tim is on the field right now I'm putting Jay Tim is on the field and he's throwing his body running he's 175 pounds yeah yeah he forced the fumble on the first play the game he hit art so hard his own helmet popped off yeah like he's not afraid it's like Jay you got us to your nose in the run game it's like yeah I know I'm good yeah yeah right and then like you create playmaker opportunities they just I'm surprised there wasn't more legend Bay right that they like that they didn't try to have something for him when you're like like you're fading a little bit the second half of it like is there anything is there anything you could have done there they wound up by throwing a third pass is there a 75 yard travian Henderson screen pass that comes out of nowhere because it's like what happened what happened in 2024 did Ohio State like out game plan

21:45were they more efficient were they more consistent or did they get a strip sack from a dude and a 75 yard catch your mark on a screen from a dude what did they do last year against Texas did they dominate the whole game where did they throw a 40 yard pass to the goal line and Carnell take jump 12 feet in the air caught it yeah and our Val Reese terrorized to our archmaning in Texas is offensive line there was not like neither one of the previous two wins against Texas were surgical like out outclassings of Texas but Ohio State had singular players making plays it the necessary moments to swing momentum and ultimately help them win the game and they just didn't they had again they had in the first half they didn't have in the second half I wonder is it with the coaching staff go back and sit in a room tomorrow and ask themselves do we have enough talent yeah and are we putting our best talent on the field frequently enough

22:48because it is important to have a high four because you don't want something to jump up and get you because you're playing a bunch of guys who haven't done this before but they have a bunch of ceiling games this year and this is week two so they have time right it would make sense if if some of the young talent if Rockboy Chris Henry Jr. Legend Bay Jay Timmans T.J. Alfred Riley Patajon Kerry Wilder right all those guys were they are they who they're going to be by November are they that right now do they have the full trust in the coaching staff they're there there's great young talent there but it seems like maybe that there needs to be a conversation about accelerating that process being honest with yourself and everybody in the position group room to be about that process making sure you're not letting loyalty get in the way of what's best for the team and because there wasn't three straight you know there wasn't really a threat in the passing

23:48game other than Jeremiah you have guys who could help that there wasn't Bo Jackson seem to run the ball like efficiently had good patience turn some threes into sixes turn to minus six you got back to the line of shoulders kind of play but there wasn't a run longer than 11 yards right right I think that's the one yeah who can give you some juice in the run game and then as you're giving up three touchdown drives to lose the game who is there on that defense and I know it you're tired yeah both it was around that defense making a play on third down making a play making a negative play to push them back just stop Texas and I don't know who that is right now well I think part of part of the issue right the thing that and I was concerned about this coming into the season I just leave this game more concerned about it I don't know that they have an answer they can go to on a defensive line other like curry wilder sure I think he's a really good looking young player let him go get out there and get some more edge maps I don't have that attack all and I thought there was a noticeable

24:48noticeable drop off a defensive tackle this game once john walker and a drink used to go off the field they played Jason Moore decent amount I don't think he was very good they played well Smith a decent amount I didn't think he was very good I don't know that I noticed James Smith a whole lot so and like there's not they traveled one freshman defensive tackle was the maris and me and he didn't play I think there are positions where they can explore some of the options that you're talking about but I don't think defensive line is one of them so then if that's the case then what do they do it's on map nutritious yeah I think so it's on map nutritious he's got to scheme up a more effective defensive line I think that's just one game but you only get 12 these in the regular season so you understand it's a small data sample sport so guess what taking this data three points seven million dollars for that defensive coordinator last year looked really smart with three top eleven picks and the last look as smart as Texas marched down the field for

25:48three touchdowns in a second 15 plays 91 yards six minutes 28 seconds 13 plays 72 yards five minutes 35 seconds 12 plays 73 yards three minutes 51 seconds Texas was nine of 16 on third down and two for three on fourth down so where they were tied like they converted two four downs on those touchdown drives you needed one play and so that all right well there isn't our bill race there isn't somebody who's just going to go do it yeah it felt like they weren't aggressive either like so I think I just like whatever I know that there's probably stuff in the back end that we're missing like oh I looked like he was going to run this coverage anywhere in this coverage I'm not I'm not trying to dismiss any of that I don't think you ever felt Ohio State's defensive front like on the front foot like making making Texas feel uncomfortable

30:06a game like this and I think they have to figure out I think they have to make a list of this to be a very urban my or kind of thing make a list of the five best playmakers on offense Jeremiah who's two we don't know it's probably Bo Jackson yeah he said he watched Bo Jackson and thought man this guy seems like he's like maturing in front of him he's running the ball and then the stats are kind of 19 carries for 74 yards 3.9 average four catches for 37 yards I didn't think julienne at the at the the drive at the end of the first half that ended with the Jeremiah Smith touchdown Bo ran it on the first play of that drive and then julienne had two check downs to Bo that I thought it was right read by julienne I thought Bo caught it and went for it and I think that more than 10 yards on both those check downs yeah I thought they were they're definitely were moments when it was like man oh he's got he's got something tome as a result ask that
