NEW WEAPONS: Commanders ADD Van Jefferson And Dyami Brown To BOOST David Blough Offense
About this episode
The Washington Commanders' offense takes a massive step forward today by adding veteran receiver Van Jefferson and bringing Dyami Brown back to the 2026 roster. What do these additions mean for David Blough and his complex spacing concepts? We break down the exact schematics behind bringing Jefferson in as a sure-handed floor-raiser and retaining Brown to provide crucial vertical gravity. By examining their elite traits, we uncover how these strategic free agency targets shape the entire passing game and correct last season's drop issues.
Beyond the perimeter, we evaluate the remaining defensive and offensive line free agents fitting the specific demands of the coaching staff. Can Eric Kendricks or Rasul Douglas lock down the defense? Will James Daniels anchor the gap-heavy rushing attack? Drop your thoughts on the new receivers in the pinned comment below, and use the timestamps to navigate the breakdown.

Your daily podcast on the Washington commanders. Part of the locked on podcast network. Your team every day. This is locked on commanders. Part of the locked on podcast network. The number one sports podcast network. And I'm David Harrison. Your guy on the ground. Credible member of the media covering the Washington commanders for WUSA9. Here with you five days a week and coming up on today. You're welcome. We're going to look at the dwindling options at some key positions for the Washington commanders. And what they can tell and what the new additions can tell us, thematically, the, uh, with the additions of wider series Van Jefferson, and the return of the Army Brown. But first,
we're going to look at what the two newest commanders have been up to lately all of that coming up on today's episode of locked on commanders. Part of the locked on podcast network. Your team every day. And that's awesome. You know, a few years back, I think that's all I can't really say about that. And we're going to look at some of the other commanders part of the locked on podcast network. Your team every day. And that's all brought to you today by fan duel. Fandull is giving you a way to turn college basketball energy into real opportunity and potentially some winnings for you with a college basketball relay profit boost head of ferdal.com. To get started on that. Today, the commanders are bringing back off seasons. I think we end up doing what three maybe before I can't remember I get excited to do a mock off season sometimes three or four mock off seasons and specifically we brought up the idea of bringing the army brown back if the wider seaver hunt didn't necessarily go Washington's way they didn't get some of the top targets and low and behold not that I'm patting myself on the back for one of four different you know circumstances coming to fruition. But here we are the wash smears go
after Alec Pierce they go after Romeo dobs neither those moves work they end up bringing the army brown back they're also bringing in wider seaver Van Javerson both those both of those moves confirmed to me by a source familiar with the situations or the agreements however you want to word that. So both those guys are inbound to the Washington commanders Deami Brown again coming back from the Jacksville Jaguar as Van Javerson coming to Washington via Tennessee though he has been in multiple spots in his career while we're all excited I think to welcome Deami Brown back into the fold we are going to start with Van Javerson and start with the new guys are the guy we don't know near as well as we obviously know Deami Brown from his time here in Washington six one two hundred pound wide receiver six years in the NFL entering year seven so 2026 is year seven for him turns 30 in July so a little bit of an older player older wider seaver son of 13 year NFL veteran and wider seaver coach Sean Jefferson posted a four three nine forty in the 2020 NFL scouting combine for you know what's that what that's worth obviously as you get older those those numbers go
down a little bit as your body gets banged up those numbers go down a little bit as well Van Javerson really was at his heights in the 2021 NFL season 802 yards six touchdowns for the Los Angeles Rams during their Super Bowl run really good season for him and a lot of people are like okay this is Van Javerson's coming out party this is when his career is going to take off things like that and unfortunately not only did the production dip it ultimately led to his departure from Los Angeles and you know he's he's been to a couple places since then now before coming to Washington following their 2021 NFL season Jefferson not not only went under one went under once not only underwent one surgery he actually there went two surgeries on the same knee in 2022 one in the spring and then another one in August that cost him the first six games of 2022 it broke it broke obviously completely derailed his opportunity to build on his breakout campaign all that time miss we just saw you know Terry McClaren go through that you know you missed that kind of a time for your for
your development for offensive synchronicity time with your quarterback all that stuff never a good thing Jefferson's recovery went you know the way that it went ultimately when he comes back he ends up with 24 catches 369 yards in 2022 clearly not the way that you want to follow up that 2021 season then that's when the Rams started to kind of shift things in 2023 you saw the rise of poop in the Kua 22 at well was there Ben Skowernek was there so that's really when kind of things just went south for van javerson as far as the organization's concern October 2023 he ends up being sent off to the Atlanta Falcons to try to give him a fresh start ends up becoming a free agent moving on things like that and a Ben Johnson type of offense which we expect David Blow to run the fit here is going to be a Z receiver right so he's going to be that opposite you off the line and scream it's perimeter receiver type we're Terry McClaren typically fits the X van javerson's a type of receiver who come in and basically play the Z receiver and I think you're just kind of raising the group
you know up up a little bit you know van is not going to be your Alec Pierce type he's not going to be your Romeo dobs type but he kind of picks up the group give him everything that has happened because instead of having to slot Jalen Lane and there is the starting Z receiver you can keep him there again you know my personal depth charts I'm not really too concerned with like exactly where I'm slotting guys is more so just get a picture of the overall roster as it is right now I am going to spend some time this weekend however deliberately putting some guys in some slots and that's when we can start having differing opinions on where guys might be able to play but beyond Jalen Lane and Luke McCaffrey who you know Luke has more size I have some of that speed Jalen Lane's got more probably acceleration but not as much size like both those guys can do some things as Z receivers Van Javerson is kind of more that style guy however you can also play the X right you can play left you can play right side he's got the frame for both so you can put him on basically two perimeter receivers coming in here for the Washington commanders and that saves you from having to lean on Nick Nash who's on a futures contract to Corey Brooks who's on a futures
contract and of course Jalen Birx also coming in can play that perimeter receiver position but he's on a one year proof of deal as well so you're not talking about you know I'm not gonna sit here on this episode and try and tell you like boom the Washington commanders got their number two receiver you still kind of have to look at this thing as a group of receivers who are going to come in and compete for that number two job we still expect Brandon I you to come in I'm only speaking for we being locked on commanders and obviously if you disagree you don't have to loop yourself into that grouping but the writing is still on the wall the brain I you can gonna come in depending on his health you know once he's up to speed healthy football healthy football shape conditioning understanding off and all that stuff I think brain I you obviously he's the number two receiver or he's the he's the Z receiver I really hate saying number one number two number three because we associate those with alignments and I don't think they should be in today's NFL at least if you have a good offensive scheme which hopefully we're going to be able to witness with David blout but X receiver you know right now Terry McClore and Z receiver right now I'm probably going to plug in you know Deami Brown on that side who we'll talk about here just a minute
Van Jopperson you know I'm a slot in behind Terry McClore and but again he can play the he can play the X on the one side he can play the Z on the other side off the line of scrimmage on the line of scrimmage he's that experience doing both of those things very sure handed you know not a lot of stats again since that 2021 NFL season but he does have a good catch rates that injury really you messed him up back with Tennessee in 2025 29 catches on 52 targets 350 yards in a touchdown played 91.9% of his snaps wide again serving the Z and the expositions for the Tennessee Titans only 1.05 yards per route run not very good average there but he only had a 1.9% drop rate that's what you really like to see out of a veteran or see if that's the kind of thing that you say okay this is probably why the Washington commanders are bringing him in is that drop rate less than 2% drop rate only one drop on 52 targets according to pro football focuses advanced data and analytics tracking 50% of his contested targets he was able to bring in 5 out of 10 so that's pretty decent
you know playstring pretty decent contested catch rate things like that only average 1.56 yards of target separation however so again not a super shifty guy that's going to leave a defender in his in his duster anything like that average depth of target in 2025 12 yards so even in a somewhat more conservative Tennessee Titans offense last year whether it be because I got a rookie quarterback or just combination of things average depth of target is still pretty good 0-9 yards had 20 targets 10-19 yards at 11 targets 20 plus yards had 12 targets in the 2025 season so again a guy that can be used at all those levels but more importantly for what we think David Blau is going to want from that Z receiver is able to kind of play that deep ball route run that deep ball routes at least to a respectable amount to where the defense can't just you know when you play wreck ball you see the guy that's behind the arc you're like yeah we're not guarding that guy behind the arc you can leave him alone van Jefferson's not a guy that any defense is going to want to leave alone trying to stretch the field and run that deep route so that's why I think that he's going to fit in the Ben Johnson offense again can play some x when Terry needs a breather or whatever or Terry's
in the slot or Terry moves somewhere else can play the Z if you need him to I don't pencil him in necessarily as a long-term starter or for the season I do expect more competition whether be Brandon I you or through the NFL draft or I mean potentially both right but I think that a perimeter role is basically what you're going to get out of van Jefferson trying to take advantage of that drop rate trying to take advantage of that contested catch rate as well but wide receiver Deami Brown is back in Washington we saw what he could do in flashes we saw what he could do really well last time he was wearing burgundy and gold in 2024 during the 2020 for season what is he done since he left and what is a mean for his return to the commanders that more coming up next on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders part of the Lockdown podcast network your team every day days episode of Lockdown Commanders is brought to you in part by Fandall college basketball is nonstop big games tight spreads momentum swings every single night from early tip-offs to late

so again locked on podcast dot com slash every dayer membership club membership tier you've got all access tier take a take a look and see which one you want to use and use that code free agency all one word for one month off today moving on with today's episode deami brown coming back to the Washington commanders zero receiver type you already know that because you've seen deami brown playing the national football league and even though the last time he saw deami brown play he was playing in a cliff Kingsbury offense the expectation is going to be that he's still going to feel fill not feel fill that Z receiver type of role right could he again line up in some extra receiver positions being outside on the line of scrimmage absolutely certainly something that deami brown can do but we do expect as of right now and you know we'll see how this thing hold this whole thing goes but as of right now we do expect tear and McLaren to remain that extra receiver moving forward we will see how I feel after I come out of the weekend if I'm bold enough to move him on my depth chart for now as we've talked about this in the offseason but let's look at what deami brown
brings as if you know say fresh look at him we'll take new eyes look at him for his drop rate his his yak and all kinds of other things since he has been in the national football league with deami brown six foot tall 195 pounds 26 turns 27 in November so you're going to get about half the season with him as a 26 year old still very very young considering it's going to be his sixth year in the national football league and I think that's important to remember third round selection of course of the Washington Commanders in 2021 a vertical specialist known for his abilities stretch the field high production in college and again we've seen a lot of flashes in NFL looking at his recent history deami brown coming back to the commanders after spending a year with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he got a one year ten million dollar contract that contract was actually up to worth up to like twelve million dollars in incentives didn't hit a lot of those incentives didn't hit most of those incentives but he did walk out of Jacksonville with about nine point nine million dollars of shot at cons money so bravo deami keep working that hustle and congratulations and welcome back was a starter for six games in Jacksonville was complimented in
Jacksonville for being up at six a.m. getting his workouts in his leadership all that stuff the stats were not there but when you hear about all the compliments and all the comments about who deami was for the organization Jacksonville like yeah that's the deami brown that we thought we had in Washington the deami brown that you hope you're getting back in Washington as well now his his derailment whatever you want to call it his lack of production with the Jacksonville Jaguars was not just simply him not working not producing on the field it was it was also injury related week three shoulder injury a week nine concussion and by the time the postseason came he ended up being a healthy and active in the wildcard round first time in his career he has been a healthy scratch in the national football league but by then you have the whole travels hunter situation going on you got the the brine Thomas junior stuff going on like the Jacksonville Jaguars basically just trying to find it rhythm trying to find where they want to do things I think it was less about what deami wasn't doing and more so about just deami not being available consistently because of those injuries to become a consistent part of that offense I you know I think it's a little bit of both
obviously but I think a lot of it had to do with that time missed not being able to get into that rhythm just like we saw happen to wash the commanders unfortunately across the board in a lot of positions as well so coming back to the Washington commanders the good news is you're going to have a little bit of break obviously they didn't play it all last year we weren't in training camp last year but Jane Daniels knows deami deami knows jaden david blou was here so that continuity inside the building is obviously going to help you know this decision was made with full knowledge and impetus knows him dan quinn knows him bobby ingram your sewers coach knows him like everybody knows each other so deami is going to feel very comfortable coming back to this organization he's going to be very excited I think about the locker room because he wasn't here when the locker room got the makeover that it did but 20 catches 37 targets 227 yards in a touchdown for deami in jaxman last year 1.18 yards per route run so better than van jafferson's numbers last year as far as that's concerned not you know super great I think the NFL average is like 1.5 1.6 yards per route run so
certainly off that mark however he did account for 10.4 percent of the team's air yards in jaxman last year while only getting 6.8 percent of the target so you see again they were using him as a deep target trying to get him free as that weapon as well did have an 8.1 percent drop rate three drops on 37 targets and you know I don't have to tell commanders fans look deami brown not the most you know shorthanded receiver in the NFL does drop everything that comes his way certainly but he is going to drop a ball here or there I think that we can all kind of think back to that drop in the end zone wide open right to you like right in the bread goes good just you know I mean it just it's just kind of his thing all everyone's want just one of those things you just have to kind of understand comes with the territory 33.3 percent of his contested catches were caught so what does that tell you deami brown continues to be a guy who these bill catch the ball in the open field right if you throw a 50 50 ball up to him he's not going to bring it down 50 percent of the time most likely the ought to be able to get it to him in motion in movement you know coming across the quarterbacks face in some way shape or form as obviously I've been taged just but
you're looking to use that speed and that length and all that stuff and he can get behind guys we've seen him get behind guys time and time again during his days with Washington that's what you're trying to look for in deami brown and look if the Washington command or if the Washington if the defenses that the commanders are facing cover him okay fine cover him take a guy out of the box take a guy out of the picture and then that's where you know if you get Terry McClorn in the slot or something like that you can have some some operating room you get chigger concollo up a seam you can have some operating room bent Senate coming out of the backfield or shot white coming out of the backfield like you have a lot of things deami can make an impact on this offense without having to catch the ball a whole whole lot right you look again the Detroit Lions offense the Chicago Bears offense both of them have receivers and I think the Chicago Bears offense this year will look more so like a Ben Johnson offense than it did last year with the team that he was inheriting so good luck NFC North but when you look at those Lions offense under Ben Johnson and even with the Chicago Bears trying to do last year it's not uncommon to have a receiver out there running a good amount of
deep routes right doing cardio like Terry kind of talked about once and not getting a whole lot of targets but he's being very effective he's being praised in the locker room praise by the coaches praise by his teammates why because you're doing a lot of heavy lifting by taking the top off of defenses by spreading them out pushing them back not allowing them to crowd the box not allowing them to crowd you know cheat on a Terry McClure and poster out or whatever it is that's kind of stuff that Deami Brown can do and quite frankly that's kind of stuff that Deami Brown was missed for in 2025 in the wash banners and truthfully I mean a week through shoulder injury a weeknight concussion like it sucks to say but he would have been one of the most healthy guys on the team you know in certain situations so you know obviously there were plenty of times and I know you guys commented on it and so like that didn't talk about the show because you know what's the point during the regular season but there were times where that Deami Brown ability to stretch the field certainly was missed in the 2025 NFL season so what is the fit for Deami Brown in the David Blow Ben Johnson Esk offense well it's
just that the vertical clear out guy he's the guy that's going to line up off the line of scrimmage you know hopefully get off of a press or shake loose of a of a defensive back and look if you can get behind them jaden you know he can drop that deep ball right there in the basket take advantage of that but even if he can't get behind him you take that guy out of the pie out of the picture you make sure that safety has to stay true or if he can beat a guy enough times or be enough guys during the season you keep that safety on that side out wide and out deep and that just opens up intermediate opportunities it opens up slant or seam opportunities opens up all that kind of stuff wheel around opportunities behind the defense things like that and you we know Deami fits the locker room he fits the culture he fits the organization zero risk here for the Washington commanders it's a $3 million deal not sure how much of that is guaranteed how much of that is incentives but it's very cheap low risk high reward potential I've got Deami Brown pencil didn't just starting Z receiver opposite of Terry McClorn right now loop McCaffer remains our big slot but again as I said over the weekend and really mold things over before next mock draft Monday goes got those
positions could change a little bit we shall see speaking of changes in position groups going to reset the roster here just a little bit take a look at the wash the commanders areas of needs now after they've added not one but two wider C or two candidates to the roster and see who else is out there in a dwindling pool of free agents that's next on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders part of the Lockdown podcast network your team every day and today's episode of Lockdown Commanders brought to you in part by indeed workplace chaos deadline stacking up inbox over flowing in the one position you have to fill is still sitting open when the pressure's on and you need the right hire this is a job for sponsored jobs indeed sponsored jobs helps you reach the people who actually fit what you're looking for with skills experience and in the right location so you're not just hoping that the right candidate stumbles across your post and here's a stat that's going to tell it all in the minute that we've been talking companies like yours have made 27 hires on indeed according to indeed data worldwide so if you're hiring spend less time searching more time interviewing

episode of lock down commanders so looking at the newest moves for the wash commanders again I use orange on my personal depth chart whatever you want to call it did just kind of track these moves the names in white or returning players the names in orange are new free agents and then once we get to the draft the draft picks are in gold and the UDFA's are in like I don't know a teal this type of color a little bit more orange on the roster now for the office aside of things then before deami brown van jefferson in there I'm actually sliding out of it right now I'm actually sliding van jefferson in there behind trailing berks so I mean you know you know pushed into a corner right now I think Terry is obviously your number one I would put deami probably as you're starting z receiver your opposite outside receiver I think trailing is there is in there in the mix lute macaphrie is your slot jalen lane is another receiver out there that's five guys so van jefferson you know look by the time we had the training camp like van jefferson couldn't end up going the way of like Michael Gallup right so I don't know but there are too many people you know maybe don't order your custom van jefferson jersey just yet on the defensive side of things knit cross
officially signed we did not get to hear from nick on friday when he signed his contract but we are going to hear from him at some point in the near future leo shennall officially signed as is a meek robertson charles and many hue calivant chase on him settled the only free agent acquisition not officially signed as of this moment is a dafe oh way no concerns there it's just not happened yet it's going to happen don't worry about it he is coming so when we look at the roster there's two clear areas that and i want to emphasize this i'd look at and wonder what the plan is and see maybe a remaining hole and i and i say it that way just because look i'm out in the meeting rooms i'm out in the building i don't know what dronte jones's uh plan is for each individual player i think i have a pretty good grasp on what the overall scheme is going to be because a lot of the players they added are guys that we talked about because we thought they would might fit what we think dronte jones is going to do obviously a cornerback position if it stays this way that's kind of the position that we don't necessarily have a a true beat on however the NFL draft again could kind of
change that all that too but that front seven is really the most important part because if you have most talented cornerbacks in the national football league which can't get to the quarterback i don't care who you are in the NFL you're not covering for much longer than five seconds if you're even covering to five seconds so the front seven can help that out a whole heck of a lot still treamus love him as a as a rookie have a lot of hopes we're coming into a second season but that's a lot of hope and not a lot of just you know actual secure knowledge mikey saner still is the outside as the inside that question is going to continue to be talked about amic robertson you love the dog mentality you love the fight in them all those things i think he's an inside guy which for me moves mikey outside and again if mike you can play outside with a super aggressive super effective front seven even him he himself every once in a while coming in as a blitzer i think that can that that could definitely work leo shanol is he going to be a mic linebacker off ball linebacker as he can be the quarterback of the defense uh is it going to matter or hinder him from moving around right so mike linebacker i see a little bit of a hole there as well and then in the receiver room of course uh still no future wide receiver one terrible corn is going to be another year older
this year no clear future number one receiver for the wash and the commanders and jane daniel's uh and truthfully no solidified number two either at least at this point so who are some of the remaining players in some of these positions uh i don't think they're going to add another free agent water receiver unless it's brain and iuk if and when uh not if but when the 49ers uh decide to uh release them listen i've been getting a lot of questions about like when do the 49ers have to release them listen the 49ers don't have to release them at all they can let him they can literally just make him ride out the uh the full the you know rate of his contract now if they tried to do that i'm sure at some point brain i you could you know leverage some sort of complaints or get the NFPA involved things like that so i don't think it's going to come to them i'm trying to tell you like hey just be aware like brain and might not be available for a year you know but i think that you know uh truthfully like again john lynch i actually did a full episode of this if you haven't seen it you can catch you and find that it was a couple a couple of weeks ago you can go find it in your playlist uh but i just don't think john lynch is really all that
motivated to do brain and iuk any favors by letting him get to washington or letting him get to jane daniel's or letting him talk to david blow or or anything like that uh anytime soon so we shall see and if you know he has the opportunity to force out and peter's to give him uh you know a seven-throw and pick a six-round pick he owns two of them one of them the San Francisco's john let's just say hey dude hey a.p give me my six-rounder back and you have brain and iuk right now you know unless that's that's something that he wants to do so again i don't know what to expect as far as a deadline on that whole situation but eventually i do expect brain and iuk to come back or to come to washington say um i don't expect another free agent wider see where to be signed could be wrong and i wouldn't necessarily be uh sad again daniel mooney was my favorite guy out there on the market um so i wouldn't be upset necessarily the washers went out there and got him on the linebacker market very slim pickens eric kendrick's kind of looks like the the top guy maybe left out there he's he's played in a Mike Zimmer defense before he's played for minnesota while de rante jones was on the staff he's played in Dallas for a zim uh the San Francisco 49ers had him recently and
then they kind of talked about wanting to bring him back but they brought drake green law back so i don't think that's going to happen uh so eric kendrick's is you know he's an older veteran he's not going to make a lot of people happy but kind of again raises the floor of the group and he can compete with Jordan McGee and again it depends on what de rante's plans are for leo chanol if leo chanol is dan de jones mic linebacker then that's lots actually filled man you know eric kendrick doesn't make any sense and bobby waggoner potentially isn't coming back either but of course bobby waggoner's also still out there on still a potential option to return to the washers as well outside corners uh it doesn't really seem like i said that the wash managers were all that concern about the outside cornerback position or long she can say outside long cornerback position right uh six two six one type of guys like that as much as we were um but there are some still some options resueled Douglas is an anorumo type of you know player so if edran de jones going to have that kind of a style uh then resueled Douglas you know projects to fit it pretty pretty well a color witherspoon six foot two type of guy prototypical press man corners had some injury and uh
issues things like that and of course trvon digs is also a potential target there the interior of the offensive line also has to be addressed uh still at some point whether it is in free agency uh to bring in some competition or it's in the NFL draft and i think when you look at the free agency market white tellers still out there he's a veteran gap scheme type of guard uh one of the best pulling guards of his generation he is towards the end of his contract and like we've talked about with bobby wagging her so many times like you're not gonna get his previous production your or or play ability or you're gonna get his current so what he's been known as is great but what can he do today that would be the question james daniel uh someone's a little bit younger he's out there on my he's got guard center versatility so that could be something that is intriguing of course chris paul is still out there and potentially the wash commanders maybe they're looking at some of these other guys and there's weight on chris paul uh to kind of make his decision i can't imagine chris paul is not gonna be on a roster um in twenty twenty six so if it's not washington then somewhere else but it was gonna be somewhere else i kind of feel like it would have been done all ready some other linemen there still out there i don't necessarily
really have like a name circled to be quiet honest with you but even pochic pochic uh still out there james daniel again where i talked about him Andre james and grand last gal which is recently released by the Detroit lions he's older uh but look he ran a ben johnson offensive Detroit so if you're gonna run a ben johnson type offense you need a center to be able to kind of help blue the whole thing together grand last gal definitely knows the offense and he knows it well so uh certainly a name i think to uh to keep an eye on if they don't maybe bring back like i said chris paul things like that and nick aligretti you know he obviously knows david blow really well he's a capable lineman he's uh he fits them old all those things and there's plenty of options in the day three pick uh range which we will talk about on our next full episode of locked on commanders because this is going to be mock monday we did talk to more news signing newly signed players on friday but because of the new news the receivers added to the group uh pivot away from breaking down their press conferences and giving you kind of the best morsels of what they said and why i think they're important but our next short
version episode will be exactly that's and then we will get into uh mock draft monday so that's gonna do it for today's episode uh make sure you are subscribed follow along with locked on commanders to get all the latest episodes and if you never miss one the every day or club is literally built for you head to locked on podcast.com slash every day or promo code free agency all one word for one month of free every day or club access to the every dayers i see you every day i appreciate you every day and i thank you for coming through yet again today and to every single person out there thank you for being a part of the reason that locked on is the number one sports podcast network in the world and until next time stay safe be kind we will see you right back here next time for another episode of locked on commanders part of the locked on podcast network your team every day step up your sweat with the peloton cross-training tread plus swivel your screen 360 degrees
