It's March 30th. Welcome to Lester News today, powered by AI. A flooring business in Lestershire just marked its 80th birthday, proving small shops can thrive for decades. Michael John flooring kicked off in 1946 as a family spot selling shoes, clothes, and watches from the city center. Fast forward, and they've grown into two solid showrooms on Narborough Road and the Parade in Odby, all while staying loyal to local roots. Over the years, they adapted smartly to survive big changes. Back when fixed prices ruled, they sold all kinds of goods, but once that ended, they zeroed in on carpets and rugs. That pivot let them shine where personal touch matters, dodging competition from giant stores and online giants who can't match the field of materials, or expert advice. Partner Mark Lucas, who's been there since he was 16 and now 53, calls it a huge win. Few businesses hit 80, he says, and there's both third generation customers, killer staff training, and a name that draws repeats.

They serve everyday folks renovating homes, plus big developers for hotels and restaurants, covering all bases. Challenges hit hard though, like parking fees cutting footfall on those busy roads and independence fading from high streets. No more free parking means fewer window shoppers who might return later, but spots like there is key pulling people who value the experience. Mark credits honesty with customers and constant evolution for their edge, a lesson carrying on even after founder Michael John Malloy passed last. December at 89, just shy of the big celebration.
