Growing up, Elizabeth had heard the stories. In Mexico, everyone seemed to know about the mysterious woman whose terrible cries could sometimes be heard moving through the night.

But it was still just a legend—until one late night during a family vacation.

Elizabeth and her sister were lying in a bedroom facing the street when they heard footsteps outside, followed by a scream unlike anything either of them had ever heard. As they listened from beneath the blankets, the sound grew louder and the footsteps came closer.

Then they reached the house. The footsteps stopped directly outside the girls’ bedroom window, the screaming suddenly vanished, and the street became completely silent.

The next morning, Elizabeth told her cousins what they had heard. They immediately knew what had been outside.
