Man on Trial for Murdering Woman, Despite Prior Convictions

A 25-year-old man from Lester is on trial for murdering 56-year-old Nila Patel, who he randomly attacked while she walked home. He sprinted up to her on Aelstone Road, punched her face repeatedly and stamped on her head, causing fatal brain injuries. Just moments earlier, he had crashed his BMW into a curb, lamppost, and traffic lights near hospital. He admits to manslaughter, dangerous driving, dealing cannabis, and biting a police officer during arrest. Officers found him, with a backpack full of the drug, right after the attack last June 24th. The attacker, Choukou Maka, Ahanonu, had a string of prior convictions for drug dealing and carrying a machete. He got a suspended sentence in June 2023 as a student, then served two years after another bust with drugs, cash, and the blade. He was released on license just weeks before the killing, with rules to stay out of trouble and limit phones.
