7News Just In — Major search underway for missing crewman in Port Phillip Bay. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Lora Turner. Good afternoon, first at four. We have developing news on a major search operation underway in Port Phillip Bay right now. A crewman went missing from a commercial ship last night. Blake Johnson is following the story. Blake, this search is now approaching its 20th hour. Lora, this is a big search both in terms of time spent, but also the area being searched. An oil tanker from Liberia departed Port Melbourne at 5pm yesterday at 8.30pm, just before it passed the head's crew on board notice that one of their own was missing, difficult to pinpoint exactly when he missed, he went missing otheries, fallen overboard, or perhaps didn't even board the ship in the first place, which in itself would be a very strange occurrence. Given they can't pinpoint exactly when he went missing, as you can see there, an enormous search has been underway down towards the head's point-to-pean, point-long style way.
The man is in his 30s, still hasn't been found, and quite a large roll call of agencies involved in the search. We've got police airing, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the air ambulance has been helping out as well, and we can see the ships on the water there, volunteer marine rescue and coast guard, among those searching what is a very wide expanse of Port Phillip Bay, but as yet, no sign of that crewman has been almost 20 hours since he disappeared.
