Hey Sabrina. Hello Will. This is a special one for you today, isn't it? Yeah, I am very excited. But also, I'm going to kind of predict a tiny bit on this is not the musical for you. I wish I would have watched it before. This got put on our list because I was watching it as I watched it. Most of my Sabrina sees just so you know our will's going to hate this part.

4:03Will's not going to like that. No, you might be you might be surprised. You might be surprised. We will see. We will see. We will see. First of all, welcome back to magical rewind. The show that makes you want to grab your friends or at least through your friends now, your PJs and your popcorn and go back to a time when all the houses were smart, the wave tsunamis and the high schools musical. I'm Wilford L. And I'm Sabrina Bryan. This week, as we've talked about, we have a large task on the magical rewind plate, not to mix metaphors, not only are we recapping a modern take on a legendary story, but this movie has also become a classic in itself and a rather groundbreaking reboot with a permanent space in pop culture. Yes, we are talking about 1997's American musical retelling of rogue heirs and her Mustines. That's not what it is. It's Rogers and Hammerstein Cinderella. Do you feel the excitement on the zoom today, Sabrina? Do you feel it? I feel nervous. I'm nervous.

5:03I'm nervous. I'm going to do it. I don't know what to do with my hands right now. I don't know. Just do this. I don't know. I don't know. Oh, this is, of course, based on the French fairy tale by Charles Poulot. I like to say it's actually Charles Pearl. This is the second remake and third version of the story, the first TV version, airing 40 years before back in 1957. The original musical from Oscar Hammerstein got a modern retelling in this wonderful world of Disney movie. Yes, this is not a decom. This is a wonderful world of Disney. I'd like to point out, this is wonderful world of Disney in 1997, and this is also when my date with the president's daughter was wonderful world of Disney 97. They were doing a lot of them at that time. They were doing very well again. Yes. And they were having a killer time. This, I think, was either number one or two and highest rated at the time. Number three was my date with the president's daughter. By the way, this will be several times during this podcast. I'm just going to bring it back to me. Thank you very much. This movie marked the return of the network anthology to ABC on November 2nd, 1997.

6:06It has been obviously re-aired numerous times, first on Valentine's Day 1999, then in 2017 for its 20th anniversary. That night, the network also aired Cinderella themed episodes of Brandy's Own sitcom, Moesha and Sister Sister to celebrate the premiere. And then just back in 2022, it was aired again. This time makes us feel old for the 25th anniversary, and it followed a special 2020 episode reuniting the cast and crew. Very cool. This movie was also co-produced by music legend Whitney Houston, who appears in the film and along with her producing partner, one Deborah Martin Chase, friend of Sabrina Bryan and... Hopefully you have the podcast soon. God, I can't wait to speak with her. Like, I really can't wait to speak with her. I take that back. You know what it is? It's not that I can't wait to speak with her. I can't wait to sit back and watch you speak with her. That's what I really can't wait to see. Because I know you when you light up, when you see people you want to talk to, it's just going to be so cool. But anyway, they obviously would develop a great relationship with Disney. As you may remember, her production company would later create the successful franchise,

7:08very near and dear to our hearts, the Cheetah Girls. But this was their first Disney project, and actually their first project ever as a production company. Okay, so it's worth explaining that when this version was first developed for CBS, it was 1993, and Whitney Houston herself was set to start. But by the time it was finally Greenlit by Disney, she believed that she was too old for the role, and in turn, the decision to cast a young R&B superstar by the name of Brandy would make her the first black actress to portray Cinderella on the screen. Sort of. And we're going to get to that shortly. What? Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cinderella was made with a $12 million budget, one of the most expensive TV movies ever made at the time. That's four times what Disney was paying for other TV movies, and it paid off. Ready for this? A whopping 60 million viewers tuned in, making it one of the most successful TV musicals of all time. It was nominated for seven Emmys and one one in the category of outstanding art direction for a variety or music program,

8:09and you can see why. And in the end, the budget was made back, and then some through home video, a booming business at the time, it sold, again, pull over your cars, people, one million copies in the first week. Yeah. Crazy. And yet, talk about crazy, they still ran out of money at the end of shooting. Producers quickly realized, and you can see how much they spent on the sets and the costumes, that they couldn't pay extras and additional costs with just days left. And then Disney declined to pay for any overages. And so the producers agreed to finance the remaining costs on their own money, and one of the stars, one giant, whoopie Goldberg, meaning she's a giant star, not that she was a giant onset, but she didn't grow for the film. Volunteered to donate the rest of her daily salary to the film. Wow. Yeah. They wanted it to get it done. And although at first it received mixed critical reviews in the year. Since Rodgers and Hammersteens, Cinderella has become one of the most highly regarded adaptations of the story ever made.

9:11Okay. The question I'm set to ask you here, I don't even need to ask you, but I'm gonna, how much nostalgia does this have for you? And then some question, how big a Brandy fan were you at the time? Okay. So huge. I think, I mean, I absolutely, I loved Brandy. I loved her show, Moisha. I loved her music. But I was probably even more, and it's not to downgrade that, that fandom that I had of her. But even more, just like in awe of Whitney Houston. Oh, God. Everything that she was ever in, I just loved. Like she, I mean, the bodyguard is one of my old time movie, great movies, great movies, great movie, life, run to you that song. Like, I mean, there's just a queen of the night. I mean, that whole era of Whitney is just like incredible. Cinderella is one of my favorite movies as the animated version.

10:15So, and then I loved seeing it in a different light with characters of a different color. And you know, and it like that heart just like, so this movie itself, just like, I remember being younger. I wasn't like significantly young, right? I was probably in like junior high in 97. So I wasn't like super young, but I just remember constantly throughout the movie. I was getting chills because I just saw Cinderella, this favorite movie that I'd watched a million times over in such a different light. And I loved it. I loved the set. I loved the costumes. I loved the dancing. I loved everything. And I remember it so vividly and watching it a lot. I was one of the ones that was purchasing. Yeah. Don't remember if it was a VHS. I guess it was. It was been 97. Maybe you got one of the first DVDs, but that meant you were a rich, you're rich. No, I feel like it wasn't. No, 97 DVD players were coming around. Was it? I can't remember. But I definitely know I didn't wait for it to come back around on TV.

11:15I watched it on my own. That's awesome. So. Yeah. And again, what you're saying about that. So it's kind of par for the course now, especially for Disney to see full cast of color, which is great. Right. But this back in 1997, totally groundbreaking, really cool. And just showing where it was like, yeah, it doesn't, doesn't matter. Just. And I talented people make a movie. One of my subrenacies is kind of diving a little bit deeper into that to then what ended up happening later on within Disney. So it's like, yeah. It just, I remember really not knowing that that's what was something that was like drawing my attention and something that was bringing me to love it that much more. And I liked like thinking about it now of going, I know. That's what was in my head, but I couldn't, I didn't have the ability at that time to like pinpoint that that's exactly what it was. Right. Yeah, it was great. It was great. So, um, yeah, there's a lot of nostalgia for me for. I could say. And I have, I get to, I'm watching this just as a movie because I have no nostalgia attached.

12:15So let's just put that out there first. And I'm watching it with some butt cheeks. No, no, what wills gonna drive her? Well, here we go. We are gonna give a little history first on Cinderella for TV. The original from Rogers and Hammerstein was actually written for TV, not the stage. And it starred the legendary Juli Andrews. And that was seen by more than 107 million viewers. A hundred and seven million viewers. That is absolutely crazy. It was one of the most relevant TV programs of all time. And then after Big Rating's hit for a version of Gypsy starring Beth Miller in the 90s, ABC was looking to relaunch the wonderful world. Disney series with a musical and Michael Eisner. Very smartly approved the Whitney Houston idea immediately. Now with the new star, it was shot over a 28 day period at the Sony Pictures Lot and Culver City, which at the time was owned by MGM and considered the mecca for movie musicals during its heyday, of course. Now, this is what I was talking about before. Some people have pointed out that an Emmy nominated 1978 ABC TV musical called Cindy was actually the first time a black cast.

13:22Tackled the fairy tale. But since it was a modernized retelling where even the main character went by Cindy instead of Cinderella, it's not really the same Cinderella we all know and love, but I think that version definitely deserves some major kudos nonetheless. So that's what I meant by kind of, but different movies, different characters, same kind of vibe, but got to give a shout out. Now Sabrina, now is going to be a good time to ask our musical expert. That's you, by the way, about some opinions on the music in this movie. This was a big deal to make any changes to the original Rogers and Hammerstein lyrics, and they had to involve their estates because they wanted to keep the spirit of the original alive. So what are your thoughts on what you heard here in the 1997 version? It's interesting because there were the standout songs that I still could hum in to myself without even rewatching this movie. And then there were somewhere I was like, I don't remember this song at all.

14:22And it has been a long time since I've watched it. There's some parts of it that I'm wondering if those are more related to the older version that are a little bit, something was off to me when I was rewatching it. And then it's one of the first songs that when we get there, I is going to be my first question. I'm not very familiar with the original original. So that's what's hard for me is to distinguish. But some of the big, big songs that are in this movie are still just as epic as they have ever been. So I am a fan of the music. Of course, there's some songs where you're kind of like, okay, just kind of waiting for the song to get done. Because it's a little slow. One of them, actually, when I rewatched it, you off guard and I'll let you know that I was like, I can't believe I don't love this as much as I would think I did. Here's what I would say.

15:22Okay. Let me just... Here's what I was saying. I thought the really good songs were really, really good. And I thought the bad songs were really, really bad. Like, there were some songs. And again, we're going to get into it. But I'll say right off the bat, how you pick that boring a song for the first song to come into the movie. Yes. Okay. We'll never understand. I'm sitting there going, oh, is this what I have to do? You're just showing this as well. And what I'm thinking of is I'm thinking of Bell and Beauty of the Beast walking through the village for the first time. That's exactly one of my first notes that I put on the movie while I was watching it. It was just like, this is giving me beauty in the beast about little town. Little... Like, I'm like, what movie are we in? What movie are we in? What do we movie are we in? But yeah, but never gets big. No. It's just like slow. And didn't seem to have as much rhythm and life.

16:24Like, it was really... It was clunky. It was like almost like it was, yeah, like just kind of talking, but they're saying. Yes. It didn't really have a lot of rhyming. Like it just seemed like it was actually a song. I got really confused. Thank you. I don't remember that part. I remember the visuals of it, but I don't remember the singing aspect song. I'm so glad you thought that too, because when you then get into the second number with Jason Alexander when he's talking about... I was like, how do you not start with something like this? Right. I know. Like this is great. This is great. Everybody dancing around, jumping around, flipping over things. He's talking fast the cheese and the ham. I was like, this... How was this not your first song? Oh God, that first one. I was like, oh no, this is going to be a long time. There's a lot... Yeah, there's a lot kind of... Quite a bit to talk right at the beginning of how this movie starts off as like... Ooh. Not what I remembered. No, I would have given this a judge walking through... Like, you know, you want the people...

17:25And they're coming out the windows morning bell. Like you want that's what you want. And the funny part is the set totally sets you up. Oh my God. I almost went... Oh my gosh, I just almost got myself trapped thinking we were watching Beauty and the Beast. And I thought they might have done... They might have based the town square with the fountain in the middle and all its stuff on Beauty and the Beast. Because... And I was just waiting for that levels of people coming out the windows and jumping through this. And oh my God, a morning Cinderella and the... Oh, dare you say... I was like, oh God, here we go. And I was just like, wow, this is their starting on a major low note, which through... Right. But I mean... But just if you think about the animated Cinderella song, right? That's... I haven't seen it in like 25 years. I don't remember it. It's when the clock is... And she gets up out of bed. That's how she will get started at the clock. And she's like, time to get up, you say. And like, it's like... Yes. Okay. Time to start another day. And then the birds are like helping her get ready and all of that.

18:26Even that's like... And she's just in her little room. It's upbeat. It's upbeat. It starts up very... It starts up very... Yes. That's what I'm saying. It's like we're starting with like... You know, Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies of all time. Yes. And Feed the Birds is one of my favorite songs ever in the history of music ever. Okay. You don't start with Feed the Birds. No, you can't. No, you do not start with that. It's like you... It's like... It's Feed the Birds. No, you gotta... Pick it up. Yeah. Anyway, sadly, believe it or not, for a musical, a soundtrack was never released for this movie. What? Which is a major shame. And that's because of conflicts between Houston's and Brandy's record labels. And I have to also believe that that's a major reason the VHS tape and then DVD did so well. It was because it was kind of the only place you could get the music. It was a place, yeah. Wow. It would be impossible to not mention the importance of Brandy becoming the first black Disney Princess ever, as we all know 2009's Princess and the Frog, and the much later Disney movie starring Tiana, the first animated black princess, which honestly should have happened

19:28way earlier. But Brandy and Whitney Houston's production company set the stage more than a decade before. And we recently mentioned Rogers and Hammerstein Cinderella because both Brandy and another star of this movie reprise their roles for the Descendants franchise. And I know that it made Sabrina smile ear to ear when she saw it in an awesome nod to something that played a major part in so many people's childhoods. And most historians believe Rogers and Hammerstein Cinderella with the way for what the modern D-com has become. And I can see that. At least I would say the modern musical D-com has become. Yeah. And again, there's not a lot of people that watched Cinderella and then went, wow, Johnny tsunami. And as originally announced on the view by Brandy in 2021, this was added to Disney Plus for you to stream. Maybe check it out before the recap or after, but just as important. 20:29I have no idea what I'm talking about. But there we go. I told you I'm going to make this about me this often. It's like, and check it out. I hate on Disney Plus. This is this is the platform to do it. Exactly right. I love it. Well, let's hurry up because the carriage will become a pumpkin if we don't get right into the synopsis. Cinderella mistreated by her cruel stepmother and step sisters gets a magical chance to attend the royal ball where she falls in love with a prince. But when the magic disappears at midnight, he sets out to find the mysterious woman with only the glass slipper she left behind. It is a story that even as you say it still gives you chills. And so Sabrina, early thoughts, what did you think of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella? I loved it. Loved it. Loved it. Okay. There are some things that are interesting now. In general, I'm cracking up while I was writing it down. Like, this is the basic like plot of Cinderella that I have never looked at this portion of it ever before. And why? Yeah.

21:29So there's one part of it where I'm like, this makes zero sense. Zero sense. And it's literally like the basic plot of Cinderella. And so it's pretty funny that I'm just watching it, just rewatching it. I watched Cinderella, millions times in the row. Is it the glass slipper? Of course it is. It doesn't disappear. It doesn't disappear. It makes no sense. No, no, no, not that part. Not that part. That's the magic part. Well, okay. That they leave just one thing behind. So all the magic disappears except one shoe? Because you haven't watched it. But in the animated movie, she picks it up and she goes, thank you. It was very godmother's gift to her. So she always remembered. All right, well, then put it in the freaking movie. That makes sense. That makes sense. I love that. Okay, good. It was the question. The audacity that you're going to try on, a generic five and a half shoe. And whoever gets it gets to marry the prince. Well, that's right. We're also, how about the fact that nobody in the kingdom has exactly the same size shoe? That's what I'm saying. I'm saying the audacity that it's like, you don't think there's any two people that have the same size shoe?

22:34That's ridiculous. That was very strange. I've never thought that ever once. And I watched Disney. I've watched Cinderella, the animated so many times of Monroe. It's now her favorite as well. I've watched it a lot. I've never had that thought come across my brain ever until when I watched this. That was so fun. Okay. Okay. All right, well, are you going to answer? Are you just going to like slow? No, okay. Stab me in the heart. No. I did not, I did not hate this movie at all. Okay, good. Here's what I would say. But. No, there is a but. I'm sorry, there is a but. Cast, phenomenal. Yes. Costumes. Amazing. Dancing, incredible. Wonderful. Sets. Outstanding. Crazy. By far the weakest part of this movie is the music. By far. There were, there maybe one or two songs that I'm like, God, these are great toes.

23:34And then the rest of them, I'm kind of like they literally just said the word impossible nine times in a row back. What? If you are you telling me you didn't like impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible. I was like, I wanted to fast forward the song. It was like, come on. You're just saying impossible over and over again. Yes, but with me Houston and Branty are saying impossible. Great. I will. I'm just gonna listen to them say that we're a yellow over and over if they sing it the way that Branty and when you sincerely brought it back, now it's just possible, possible, possible, possible, possible, possible, possible, possible, possible, possible, possible. Oh, my gosh. I know that is one of my favorite, that's a song that I when Monroe goes, it's impossible. I start busting into. Yeah. I can't. I can't. I can't be anywhere near the list. It's all the list of the songs in this movie.

24:34No, I really like this movie, but I did not like the music. I didn't like the music and went into musical. No, I'm not saying that. The other song, the smaller mini songs. Yeah, but I can't even know one thing. I just, again, I don't remember. I don't know the original one. Right. Well, that's the thing is I think the Julie Andrews. I don't know that one. One of the things that I've come to realize is that I'm just, there's, I know there's different types of musicals everywhere. Right. You know, what is the one? A lot of the, like, I am a modern major general and I'm an animal and mineral. Like that. There's certain types of musicals that are just not my favorite. And I don't think Rogers and Hammerstein are necessarily my favorite type of musical. So they have a, they all have their own, it's, it's their own cadence, their own style, their own storytelling. Where it's like, I go watch something like Hamilton and I'm in and not only am I in, but I will put the soundtrack in my car and I will listen to it on repeat.

25:35Like I am in these songs are out of my head the second that they were sung. Yeah. No, I, I, and so even high school musical. I remember songs from high school musical. No, I remember songs from Camp Ratt. But yes, I'm not sure other than going, okay, if you say impossible one more time. Like other than that, I can't think and the one I love the, the J.S. Now, Alexander one. Yeah. I love them singing to each other as they're dancing at the ball. I mean, that's like a gorgeous. They're swinging each other around. And it was like, it was stunning. And then the rest of them, it's like, oh, God, these are just kind of bad songs to me. I just, I didn't, I didn't like them. So again, the movie. I enjoyed it. I mean, what's not to enjoy? It's bright. The cast is incredible. Everybody's dancing around. The sets look amazing. The dresses are gorgeous. It's brandy. It's Whitney Houston. Even the cheesy effects for the time worked for the magic of the thing. Like, like, it all worked. And then the songs would come on and be like, oh, God, I just want to fast forward the song. Like I didn't like the songs. Interesting. But the movie itself, I enjoyed it. I really, I mean, again, what's not to like? It was, it was a fun watch.

26:35I didn't like the music. But it is directed by Robert Eiskov, a veteran Canadian director with a lot of highs and lows. And a Juilliard education in dance. I think you can see that. He was a choreographer by trade who, like Kenny Ortega, gravitated to behind the camera. Started on TV shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, 21 Jump Street and Miami Vice, which are a lot different than musicals. Although I'll be honest with you, 21 Jump Street, the musical I be in. But he cut his teeth on TV movies. This one being a big breakout for him. He'd go on to make a theatrical generational classic. She's all that as well as a classic generational bomb from Justin to Kelly. The cinematic offshoot of American Idol. And if you haven't seen from Justin to Kelly, go to a head shop, get yourself a little bit of weed and go and watch from Justin to Kelly. You'll be the greatest nine hours you've ever had in your life. Because that's how long it's going to feel. But man, it is a fun movie. Have you seen from Justin to Kelly? No.

27:35Oh, Michaela, have you seen from Justin to Kelly? Of course I have. Oh. What did you think? It's been a minute. I was young, but I remember loving it. Exactly. That's all you need to know. Justin to Kelly. It's Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson, the two one and two from American Idol. They threw them into a musical together of them on a beach. Oh, my God. I think I remember. I don't think I ever watched it. She actually just came out in an interview saying she had no idea about this movie, but had to do it. Like when she won, that she had to do this movie. Oh, this is a contract. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Oh, they screwed those like a brand new. Those contracts on those kinds of shows are wild. What if he didn't come in second? What if it was two women that won or what? It was whatever. It didn't matter who it was. So they just have to pick. Oh, God, but oh, God. It's like even if, yeah, even if it was somebody who got fourth or whatever, if anyone that was on it, they had their picking of what I am not advocating drug use,

28:38but go and smoke some weed and watch this movie. It's magic. It's absolutely. His last movie credit was a 2016 hallmark film called Surprised by Love, starring Hillary Burton Morgan. All right. And for the cast, let's start with, all right. There we go. And for the cast, let's start with Brandy Norwood, known to the masses as just Brandy. You know, you're awesome when you can just have one name. If I said will, everyone be like, I love Will Farrell. She was an R&B mega star in the 90s. First with their self titled album in 1994 that resulted in three top 10 singles, including I want to be down. That led to her own sitcom Moesha on UPN running from 1996 to 2001. But it was her album in 1998 never say never that included the song The Boy Is Mine. A duet with another R&B star Monica. 19 13 weeks at number one, earning her a well-deserved Grammy award. You just keep saying words. I've never heard that song in my life. You are a liar. When would I have you see me listening to Brandy in 1998?

29:42I'm like 22. I'm not listening to Brandy. Come on. I was a punk kid. I listened to, I listened to punk music. Did you only listen to one of 6.7? Like, you didn't listen to any other radio stations. I never listened to the radio in my entire life. And I say that fully on iHeart Radio. Go pick everybody up, but iHeart Radio. Yeah, no. I only listen to tapes to records. And then to CDs. And I never ever was a radio guy ever. Yeah. So my brothers would make me mix tapes from the radio, but radio music I never listened to. I was listening to underground stuff. I was listening to Husker Doe and the Huda Guru's and all this kind of like random black flag in the Ramones. Yeah, no, I picked Floyd. It was my favorite band of all the time. The Boos. The Billy Boudy Boos. Well, that's what I hear when I hear Monica. And yeah. Oh, yeah. So yeah, no. Oh, that song was. Oh, so listen. She's since released more music with over 17 million albums in single soul.

30:44She was a judge in America's Got Talent, competed on Dancing With The Stars, and made her Broadway debut in 2015 playing Roxy Heart in Chicago. And don't forget, she's Cinderella all over again for a whole new generation playing the role in the new Descendants franchise. And she goes. Bernadette Peters plays Cinderella's evil stepmother a role that was reportedly very hard to cast. Bet Midler got the first offer, but passed because she and many other actresses didn't want to be mean to the first black Cinderella. But Peters is a legend best known as Marie in the jerk. Oh, with Steve Martin, one of the greatest in films ever made. You've also seen her in the 1982 film version of Annie. TV shows like Smash, Mozart in the Jungle, and is the voice of Sophie in the cartoon, Anastasia. How low-monto bond plays Prince Christopher, and I have a question for you. And maybe I just didn't know this. Is Christopher added for this movie? Has he a was he Prince Christopher and the original Cinderella thing? Was he always Prince Christopher or is that it made up for this movie? I thought he was just the prince, wasn't he?

31:46I don't think they ever actually say what he's just the prince. He's just the prince. He's just the prince, right? Yeah, that's what I thought too. It's they I thought they added Chris and it was like, man, I wonder if it's always been Christopher. There's a Prince Charming, but that's it. Although it's just the handsome prince or whatever. Okay, that's what I thought. So yeah, Prince Christopher, Montenegro was born in the Philippines and moved to America when he was just one year old. And this was his first job in mainstream Hollywood, yikes, way to kill it. Right. He would go on to play Kong Laugh. That's different from Chase right there. She finds him. Well, she did. She's got a Kong Laugh in the Mortal Kombat Conquest TV series. Then appear in movies like Just Right and TV shows like the Blacklist and One Life to Live. And he also returns as the prince alongside Brandy in the new descendants movies. Jason Alexander is Lionel. Alexander and Emmy and Tony winner was one of TV's biggest sitcom stars possibly ever playing George Costanza on Seinfeld. He also appeared in Pretty Woman, Coneheads and the music video for Nickelbacks trying not to love you. Which is a little little strange.

32:46Kidbit. Alexander is now a prolific voice actor and a fellow I Heart podcaster shout out. We'll see if the Christopher's part. Whoopi Goldberg plays Queen Constantine. And here's some trivia for you all. She supposedly wears and I don't know how this is possible. But this is what the research shows. Where's more than 50 million dollars worth of jewelry in this movie. That's got to be wrong. It's got to be five, right? 50 million dollars worth of jewelry in this movie. Goldberg is one of the most celebrated entertainers of her generation and a rare egot winner, which of course is Emmy. Golding. No, I think the G stands for. Gray. No. S. Cargo, I think is what it is. The O is non kidding. Of course, it's a Grammy. Okay. It's an Emmy Grammy Oscar and Tony winner. I was making a joke. She started movies like Sister Act, The Color Purple and Ghost, which got her the best supporting actress award, which should. That was a great movie. She won a Grammy for the groundbreaking comedy album from her one woman Broadway show and is now best known as the Emmy winning moderator of the view, making her one of TV's most recognizable faces.

33:52She's also a recipient of the Mark Twain prize for American humor. She is a massive talent in basically every category she tries. Victor Garber is King Maximilian. He is a four time Tony nominee and is six time Emmy nominee Yikes. Best known as Jack Bristo on Alias and for movies like Titanic, Argo, legally blonde and milk. The character actor also found himself on Broadway starring in Swini Todd, Death Trap and Hello Dolly with a co star we recognize Bernadette Peters, the evil stepmother. And finally, Rester Whitney Houston appears as the fairy godmother, a producer on the movie she pivoted from playing Cinderella and helped pick Brandy as her successor, but still decided to play this smaller, less demanding role. Houston is considered the greatest pound for pound singer of her generation. I think you could arguably say maybe the greatest pound for pound singer in history. Selling more than 200 million records worldwide, I'm saying that again, 200 million records worldwide. Yikes and in the process winning six Grammys with seven consecutive number one singles.

34:53Think about that. She was also a movie star in films like The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale and The Creatures wife, but tragically passed away in 2012 at just the young age of 48. Imagine how many Grammys she would have now if she hadn't had the life that she was living and you know what I mean? She obviously had a very rough life that a lot of people didn't know about. And to know what kind of like she just I mean, it's just pure talent that just uses from this woman's body. You wonder what it is. She's so gorgeous. I've literally heard people say things like if I ever wonder if there's a god I listen to Whitney Houston saying it's like it's that good where it's like it comes from somewhere because it's like man. She opens her mouth and it's just on another. It's a whole different thing. To me it's her and Celine Dion and it's like even the people that come over and then like poverty and and Freddie Mercury.

35:54There's a list of like eight to 10 that we know of that are that good. Yes. And yeah forever. You know, God, I mean and the fact that she was so good at acting too. She was great. All of the movies were so amazing. She was great. The bodyguard was phenomenal. The bodyguard was so good. Waiting to Exhale. Like they're just such great movies. I can't even, I think for me. Run to you is probably the number one, but I also love and have a nostalgia with Queen of the night. I did a dance to it when I was like really young and it was just like a silly dance. It wasn't something like I competed. It was just like a silly dance that I ended up learning for a small performance. And I just fell in love with that song. That was a song that I had to get like multiple cassette tapes up because I was like. I kept wearing them out. Yeah. I was wearing them out. It's so sad because we just lost her too, but the idea that I will always love you, which is I think originally a Delhi part and song.

36:54Delhi part and wrote that. Yeah. Is it was just you hear that it's insane, but I know this is going to sound strange, but I think my favorite thing I ever heard her saying was the national anthem before. Oh, because you go this can't this can't be real like this can't be real. What this woman is doing here. And so I just hearing that version of that song it was it was amazing. They've talked to the athletes that played in the game that were like, Oh, I remember the game, of course. And yeah, we won it was great, but the thing I remember most was hearing what you used to say like it overshadowed the game. It was so good. Yeah, crazy. So big. So big. Now this may be one of the most impressive cast we'll ever see in a Disney movie. There's no doubt about it. But can it pass the most important test? Is it 90 minutes long? Because of magical rewind we believe all movies can be exactly 90 minutes and properly tell a story we've proven at time after time even the Odyssey. I haven't seen that yet, but I'm guessing from what I've heard of Christopher Nolan he likes to keep things short.

37:56No, I'm kidding. And so this remake of Cinderella clocks in at 88 minutes people. I can't be mad, especially since they added a few minutes from the original Cinderella movie and still came in under the target. Maybe just use those extra two minutes to find pod meets world on Disney plus where you can go and check it out now. Just go to Disney plus type in pod meets world and give it a click. 44:07We open in the most angelic way possible. It is the legendary Whitney Houston almost in hologram form glowing and shooting little emojis off of her body singing impossible. I do not recommend making it a drinking game. Do not take a shot every time she says impossible. You'll be dead by the second commercial. A prelude for this movie all about what we're going to see Sabrina. Sabrina, if you had to list the greatest singing voices of all time, we just talked about this. Top three. Whitney, Selene. Now that you mentioned Freddie Mercury, I think I'm with him. Okay. Yeah, so it depends on the kind of music you like. If you actually hear Poverradi saying you kind of go what what the hell is going on. Yes, but pretty outstanding. Doesn't he only sing? He's an opera singer. Yeah, yeah. So what's the language? I think that would be hard for me. No, he sings in a he sings in a number of different languages. Oh, he does. Yeah, he sings mostly in Italian. Luciana Poverradi. Yes. But he does sing other versions of songs. But again, when you actually hear some Enrico Caruso, I would put up on that list.

45:13I mean, there are some opera singers that the what they do is just so ridiculous that you're like, how is this even possible? Yeah, but I don't know if I could sit through like a whole show of that. I could sit. I could I want to tell you I went to Selene Dion show in Vegas and yeah, bald my eyes out didn't even realize I was didn't even realize I was as big of a fan. I knew the words to 90% of her show. Yeah, and I didn't realize I did, but her voice and like, I mean, it's like I hate that I never got to hear Whitney Houston live. That would have been no. I would like I would put up there just because every time I hear her sing, I'm like, this is another next level too. I would put a Dell on that list. I think a Dell. I know I'm not sure I make it on the top three. Yeah, that's a good idea. But I mean, again, how you would feel about Poverradi singing is how I would feel about Selene Dion singing. Yeah, I would like the music. I just wouldn't I don't know how much I'd love to sit and not be able to understand what the words were. That's the part that would be.

46:21Did you see pretty woman? Yeah, you know how she sits there and she doesn't understand what they're talking about because of singing Italian, but she's bawling at the end. That's what it's like. Right, but I don't know. You're just like, I don't know what happened, but my God, it's magical. It's pretty. Yeah, it's pretty amazing. I guess I have to try because I don't know if I could if I really would or if I'd be like up in the rafters. I would have to think that Whitney Houston would be considered. And again, this is a giant statement because we don't know everybody that's ever walked the planet, but she would have to be on the list of the best singers that have ever lived. I would have to imagine. She was so so next level what she could do that it's insane. But when he then disappears, we get our credits all very Disney like right before we're thrown into the middle of a book and busy village. Let us cards drive on cobblestone shoes are being shine chickens are in cages and one man dances in the street for coins. I was amazed one of the giant storefront says tobacco in giant letters. I couldn't believe it for a Disney movie. Yes, very very amazing. Also, we are that's what made me go. This isn't a D.com. Right. I'm going now. Yeah, there was also a strange background actor older gentleman wearing a yellow jacket and the giant yellow hat who just not only keeps popping up at the background, but staring right at the camera.

47:36We land on a well to do lady wearing an intricate purple get up demanding her party keep up. It's the evil stepmother and her two daughters with Cinderella brandy far behind sprinting and carrying a handful of their boxes. Eventually the stepmother and her snooty daughters land on an ugly feather hat that both the girls want while Cinderella is mesmerized by nearby puppet show. They asked Cinderella's opinion on who should get the hat and Cinderella admits it's not a good look on either of them. So the fight continues and they rush to the mom for the final verdict. Cinderella refocuses on the puppet show, which is about a prince meeting his lady Gwendolyn a fairy tale for the ages. This turns into Cinderella's first song. The sweetest sounds by brandy. It's a song of optimism for a future that's boring. It's especially about her finding love. It is so boring to get us into this world. Yeah, it would. I don't know if it to me. It wasn't necessarily boring. It was confusing because it was and again. This is when I went, okay, now that I'm watching it as an adult and my job is to is to kind of not pick it apart necessarily but like really pay attention to details and critique it.

48:39Yeah. Now I'm going. I wish I would have watched an older version of the original because now I'm not sure if this was a song that was written for this version or not. And I'm assuming this was a more of a later version, the early one because it was like, like I said, the rhythm. There wasn't like an easy rhythm to like find in the way they were singing. This wasn't it wasn't super rhymy. So didn't it didn't feel like a song. It felt like they were just using their singing voices to sing the script. Yeah, no, I was weird. And it was just weird to like you said. I mean, at least we got my favorite song not so much yours impossible. At least we got a little step. Yeah, okay. We'll get to that. Yeah, so I just thought it was a way. I see this beautiful village and all these people dressed amazingly. And I wanted them all to start spinning around and one big giant dance number and I was like, wait, and when I'm waiting for that and I'm disappointed it's not there. You know there's a problem. Yeah.

49:47Eventually the evil family members knock her out of her trance calling her lazy and we quickly jump to a man on the other side of the marketplace. He picks up the song. Singing along and also looking for the love of his life or reminder, by the way, this is in fact, Paulo Montabon actually singing. And this is his first movie and he's killing it. Very impressive. He's surrounded by legends. Very good looking. Good looking dude. Very good looking dude. Good looking dude. He and Brandy eventually cross paths, mashing the song together surrounded by pumpkins and squash. And in the process, Cinderella is almost trounced by some car horses. She hits the floor dropping all of her things and is quickly helped up by this guy. She's fine and the guy blames the royals. And then he sees her. His breath is taken away by her beauty and though she smiles, she quickly gets up to leave. He chases after he wants to know her name and she says, Cinderella. A name that correctly confuses him and to help him understand she blurt out. I like to sit by the fire and the cinders fly and my face gets smudge and he gets it. Oh, cinder Ella. Is this a thing? Is this is this a thing? Was this from the regular Cinderella? Does she talk about this or?

50:52So, okay, so I don't know if it's not talked about in the animated movie. However, the newer one that they have that movie, her name is Ella. And this is a movie on it's called Cinderella. It's been the newer live action. The color that descendants, too, don't they? They don't they color Ella? Yes, but this comes from this movie was before the descendants. And so I don't know if it's from like a book or what? Okay. But in the the other live action movie, her name is Ella. And then there's a scene where she ends up something happens with the cinders from the or not from the cinders from the fireplace. And then her two step sisters nicknamed her cinder Ella because they're like, Oh, you've got cinder all over your face. Okay, you're cinder Ella. And so that's what becomes her name. That's not talked about in the animated film model. Gotcha. But okay, so that was from something else. I didn't do that with all the love it love the background knowledge. The charming man still wants to know what it would take to find himself in her good graces. He just won't give up. Cinderella isn't so sure this guy even

51:57knows how to treat a girl, which she explains is with kindness and respect. He realizes she's not like the other girls. And she admits she's been very, very sheltered. And he admits he's been sheltered too. And just as they finally connect, she's called away by her yelling stepmother, they go their separate ways, finally finishing off the song. And we get a big reveal. I didn't see this coming. I did. I knew exactly who was the man walks into the royal carers to go home. He is the prince. His name is Christopher. And he lives in a big, huge CGI castle. He frequently dresses up. That's not very. That did not look very good. It's 1997. It probably look good for the time. But no, it's a yes. But still it was kind of like the effects weren't very special. No, they weren't. He they wouldn't be now. They probably were. I remember like we're going to get to it being like that was so cool looking. Yeah, I know. I know. You saw how spoiled. Not anymore. Yeah, exactly. He frequently dresses up like a commoner and walks around town because then he can feel like a real person. His assistant Lionel isn't very excited about it. Why would anyone want to be a normal plebe?

53:00Christopher wants free will and being a prince means everything is predetermined for him. It's just not living. Lionel then usheres the prince to see his royal parents, the king and queen, who are putting together a party, inviting 400 to 500 of the most eligible women in the kingdom to meet their son. This is modern day. What's the one where the not like Bumble or hinge? This is kind of he just keeps getting to. Yeah, it's this is the equivalent then of you know him. What would be like speed dating, I feel like yeah, exactly. What's the only a swipe? You swipe on Tinder. Bumble. Oh, Tinder. This is like, Tinder. I think you swipe on all of them. Oh, do you? Oh my god. I don't know. I think you swipe on everything. We're told we swipe on everything. Yeah, he's like. He's like, move past the ones that you're not interested in and just so horrible. Anyway, sorry. Christopher is not excited by this idea. So his mom squeals and breaks down crying begging for smelling salts. The king explains that the prince has obligations. It's time to produce an air. But Christopher wants to fall in love naturally. The queen still thinks a party could be the place for that to happen. And with that, Christopher storms out.

54:06The queen then calls for Lionel who's been eavesdropping outside and dictates the ball invite. She doesn't care that her son doesn't want a party. They're doing it anyway tomorrow night. We cut to town and Lionel is singing out the invitation to all the plebs who are all very excited, especially the evil stepmom who thinks that her two daughters could be perfect for him. Lionel continues to sing now about planning the party, which includes picking up ham decorations, cheese and cream puffs. And we get a massive dance number with everyone in town. Sabrina dance knowledge champion two times should have been the winner of dancing with the stars. What are your thoughts on this big routine? I love that my intro to that is getting longer and longer and so wonderful. Thank you. It's also accurate. Okay. I would say I'm going to go ahead and say even though we're not even but what maybe 20 minutes maybe this was my favorite one me to me to 100% as far as visuals go.

55:08My song is always impossible, which you are really going to kill me. Impossible impossible impossible impossible. It is I think visually so cool. It looked straight out of newsies anything or take us done or rob rob Marshall. I think it's like it is that those are the the the the choreographers that end up being directors. That's what I'm here for and it gave me everything. I'll tell you one thing that drove me nuts in this whole this whole routine at my Sabrina sees because it was just so annoying and just didn't need to happen and it just kept popping in to the screen over and over again. But other than that, I love this one. And I don't know Jason Alexander as a performer in this light. And so it made me so happy to see an actor that I have been a fan of. I loved him on Seinfeld. I've loved him in pretty woman. I like anything he's ever and I'm like, oh, I love what's he going to do? Right.

56:11I've never seen him do something like this. And again, I didn't recognize that about I guess I wasn't a fan back then. He was just in this movie. Right. Now I'm a fan of him and now to see him like it felt like I saw this one routine for the first time because I was like it was Jason Alexander. Yeah for this time. And it was so good. I agree. I love this. This is my favorite phenomenal. Yeah. This one. I think so too. And I like the song. Yes. I like the song. I'm not sure it was something with this much energy. This is the first kind of yeah and give Cinderella or somebody the rest of the town this vibe to start the movie started up like hey as opposed to oh my god. Yeah. So that's this is what I was like, oh god, if it's going to be like this, I'm in like this is totally cool. So yes, it all ends with Cinderella hearing the news unaware that the man interested in her earlier is the prince everyone is clamoring over which she did know she had to because she saw him get into the carriage. Right. No. Yes, she did. They walked away. No, she turns around and watches him get it. He doesn't see her, but she sees him. She totally does. Oh, yeah, she totally is watching him get into the car.

57:21Questions later on when we get to the ball like, yeah, well, that's just you have to get all the car. Yeah, you have to have to hand him on Santa Clark, can it because it was like, wow, I don't recognize you and you've done nothing to change yourself. Amazing. But yeah, though, this was she clearly watched like they they they hold on her as you watch him get into the carriage and take off. So she he doesn't see her, but she sees him. Okay, let's put it this way if they didn't want you to think that then it was shot wrong because they hold on her as they cut back to him getting into that. No, that's I don't know what I'm not sure what they're intentions. I don't either. I think she's supposed to know he's the prince, but he's not supposed to know she's the scullery made. That's nice. Okay. Okay. Now later in the day, the stepmom and the step sisters return home, forcing Cinderella to open the door and clean the house while they get beauty rest for tomorrow's ball, but Cinderella points out that all eligible women from the town are invited in furry that she could go to all eligible women from the town are invited, implying that she could go to so the stepmother insults her demanding that she knows her place.

58:34Cinderella starts to say that if her father was alive with the stepmother cuts her off, but he's not easy and it's now becoming a little clearer why maybe better past. But by the way, burn it up, Peters kills it in this movie. She's the best love her so everything happens for Cinderella gets back to work quietly complaining about her situation and starting a new song in my own little corner. This is a song about literally being in a corner. It's a spot in the house where she can fantasize about other fancy lives she could be living. What do you think, Sabrina, this song? I like this song. I didn't mind the song either. I loved it. I liked the small little tidbits of choreography that were in it. It showed me because again, now that I'm watching it and I thought at the beginning it did hit me a little bit. I felt like brand like brandy was the character was a little bit young for me. I wasn't I'm not used to thinking of Cinderella as necessarily being a young, young girl.

59:35So as I'm watching this character younger than I thought when during this song and she's like going through the staircase and it's kind of like to me going, oh, she's like really sheltered. And so that's kind of what makes sense to me her being played a little bit younger thinking of somebody who has been so sheltered. I just googled so in the Disney in the 1950 movie she's supposed to be 19 right. Yeah, that's not this seemed a little bit younger than yeah, I agree. I agree. But in that sense of this this song did feel that vibe of like somebody who sheltered and just kind of always by herself and then her imagination starts to kind of take over and she's using her broom as like a shotgun. Like you know what I mean, like that kind of really brought that to mind for me. So and and this is where we get to like listen to Brandy's gorgeous voice. Yeah. And this should be this should have been the first slow song of the movie. Like they started with a slow song.

1:00:36Right. Doesn't make any sense. It should have been two very big production numbers to start and then you quiet it down and let Brandy sing. Life is just better when you've got a friend to go through with it right. Someone who gets you has got your back and someone who shows up with your matters. But she says that's impossible. Everyone's coming. Then Lionel Chimes in. He suggests that if Christopher finds a bride tonight, that's wonderful.

1:05:39But if he doesn't, maybe he could try it his way. Christopher of course loves this plan. And even his dad thinks that it's fair. The queen begrudgingly agrees and Christopher runs off satisfied. Lionel tells the royal couple not to worry. He will meet someone at the ball. He can feel it in his bones. The queen promises he'll feel it in his bones if he doesn't. And then knocks him off his ladder. And again, all the physical stuff he's doing, it's all big. It's Disney. It's great. It's perfect. There's, we've talked so many times about actors that get into a Disney movie that can go and play ridiculously big and kind of a not a comical way. But it's almost just bad acting. Whereas this is Disney the way it's supposed to be. Yeah. At its finest. I agree. Back at Cinderella's, the sisters are getting ready for the night with their mom, painfully cinching them into dresses and rehearsing what they'll do to steal the princess' attention, which includes eyelash fluttering curtsies, poems and acting stupid. But one daughter, Minerva, can't stop itching herself. A tick she's developed when she's nervous. The other daughter, Kaliapi, plans to laugh infectiously and snort at all the princess jokes. The main goal is to hide their flaws until after the wedding.

1:06:42Cinderella suggests that maybe they should just show their true selves. And the sisters are not amused. And her ideas of falling in love at first sight and romance are stupid. This leads us into the next song, Falling in Love with Love. All about manipulating a man and calling Love Make Believe. What did you think of this song? Um, this song was not... This is freaking notable to me. Yeah, it was not something that was on the... It wasn't my favorite. Love the two women playing the step sisters by the way. Yes. Great fun, comic relief. And I love the comedy aspects of it. But the song itself. That's what I'm saying. So then we're back to the fact that it's like visuals great, acting great. All of that part, playing into it. But the music itself was just kind of like... I know. I thought the music was by far the worst part of this movie. I thought everything else was great. And I thought that time's the music was really lacking. Yeah.

1:07:42But the performances were so good. They're all good. It's so weird for it to not all gel together like that. I agree. I mean, again, I keep going back to Hamilton or some of these other high school musicals. I need these other musicals. Even Camp Rocks, some of the songs... The songs are good. Whereas I just felt like these. And I think it's, again, it's a Rogers and Hammerstein style. Maybe it's just not my thing. I don't know. It's not like Gilbert and Sullivan or any of the... It's just different. But anyway. I think the girls now at the ball, Cinderella is alone at the house, lamenting about her life, back in her little corner and her chair, dreaming about the possibilities of what could be. She could maybe even become a princess. And with that, she gets underneath and wishes that she could go to the ball. And then magically, Whitney Houston appears. She's Cinderella's sassy fairy godmother, performing vocal exercises and traveling through fire, and encouraging her to find the music deep in her. Like, she is. She's doing the flippin' afnapedefu and all that kind of stuff. Which she does too in the, in the descendants movie. So, I mean, this is all fairy godmother stuff. Yeah. When encouraged to walk out that door,

1:08:43Cinderella says she has no one else in her life. These witches are her only family. But Whitney knows her dad would want more for her. Cinderella agrees, but says it's impossible to do anything about it now. And then the fairy godmother gets to work. And Whitney Houston gets to show off that she's Whitney Houston with her next song. Sabrina's favorite song ever. A duet between Whitney and Brandy. Impossible. And the fact that Brandy is hanging with Whitney Houston is pretty amazing. Yeah. I remember a lot of it being obviously it was a really big deal, but they got really close during this time. Like a lot of the interviews talking about how they became so close and like that, you know, integral parts of, you know, obviously Whitney mentoring Brandy on certain things as she's in her career. Got to imagine having Whitney Houston as your mentor. I got flowers from her from the first movie and I just thought I was like just, I mean, I mean, yeah, you my, my god Whitney Houston sent you flowers. That's insane. Yeah. That's a story you will tell your whole life.

1:09:44Yes. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's how that's how awesome she is. Crazy. Yeah. I mean, just to think, the thing that she never came to set, you know, she was executive producer on the cheater girls. Right. So like she never came to set. Which obviously would have been just, I don't know what I would have done. I'm so, I'm almost not, not glad, but like, because I would have loved to meet her, but like, I don't know. Yeah, what would you do? Yeah, I'd have embarrassed you. Crazy. But the fact that she went out of her way to go ahead and send, you know, flowers to wish us luck is just so incredible. Yeah, that's cool. Fairy Godmother does more than just give words of encouragement. She turns a pumpkin into a glorious horse-drawn carriage and the final ingredient, a beautiful shining ball gown. It is an icy blue off the shoulder dress designed by Ellen Maroginick. If you're interested, by the way, the dress is currently a centerpiece in the Disney archives and part of a touring exhibition called Heroes In Villains, the art of the Disney costume. Back to the movie Cinderella is ready for the ball, even with some fancy glass slippers on her feet. Before she gallops off, though, Whitney lets her know she must be home by midnight because that's when the magic runs out and everything changes back to normal. And just like that, Cinderella leaves for the ball and things are indeed possible because I can tell because they just keep saying the over and over again, saying the words over and over again, impossible, impossible, possible, with these two R&B legends back to singing. Also fun fact, Brandy, and this is exactly what Sabrina was just talking about. Brandy, Whitney stayed very close friends over the years. And sadly, Brandy was one of the last people to see Whitney Houston alive. It was at a rehearsal for Clive Davis's big Grammy party and Brandy wrote all about it in her memoir phases.

1:11:48And now we're at the big ball. There's numerous couples dancing in unison, men dressed in purple, women in shades of blue. The prince is dancing with every woman one by one, but clearly peeved and not enjoying any of it. His dad and mom, the king and queen watch on, still hopeful the plan will work, while Lionel's just nervous he didn't order enough food. Cinderella's family is also watching on, waiting their turn. Itchy, Minerva can barely contain herself screaming. And I had a serious laugh out loud moment where she's just like, give me a shot at him! It was like, oh man, because it came out of nowhere and it was just so funny. That was a great moment. Yeah, screaming out for Christopher while her mom unsuccessfully tries to butter up Lionel by flirting with him. And then it's Minerva's turn. She grabs Christopher's hand and immediately starts scratching herself. She tries to recite poetry, but he can't get over the fidgeting as she fons over him fanatically. She's pulled away by guards giving away to Kaliope, who instantly starts laughing like she's just heard the funniest joke ever told. As a result, she's pulled away even quicker.

1:12:49Christopher just wants the night to be over, instructing Lionel to speed up the music to get through hopefuls even faster, which was very funny. Meanwhile outside and the choreography keeps going. And this is where you can see the great stage production. It's like, it's Jason Alexander going in by the end he's lifting the women over like just to get done with the dance as fast as possible. It's really interesting to what the choreography was great. I loved it. Meanwhile outside the pumpkin carriage has arrived and Cinderella wakes her way into the castle. She stopped halfway up the stairs by Fairy Godmother, who wishes her luck and reminds her get home before midnight. And once she does walk inside, the music is faster than it's ever been. They basically turned into a rave. Lionel is rushing possible soulmates in and out and out of nowhere. Everything stops. Cinderella appears with door and Christopher freezes immediately taken with what he sees. As she makes her way down the stairs, the room is silent. It's a great moment. Everyone's just watching on it. Cinderella gets closer and closer to the prince. She bows to his highness and they jump right into the ballroom dancing. Everyone is impressed and can tell this is an undeniable match. Even the king and queen who have no idea who the stunning girl is acknowledged the magic.

1:13:51The king even grunts out if I were a younger man, which is really kind of creepy for her king. And oddly the stepmom and step sisters. It was such a weird moment. It is. I love what we going. You will what? And it's like, well, I'd be younger. Well, then I'd be younger. It was funny. I was. And oddly the stepmom and step sisters don't recognize Cinderella at all. It's a real teenage mutant into turtle situation where when they put on those I'm asked, they feel like it's a total disguise. And when it's clearly the only mutant turtles that exist. So yeah, again, I just, you got to let it go. You got to let it go. Well, you got to let it go. Let me ask you a question because I haven't seen it in forever. Is the change in the animated movie way more dramatic? Meaning like, does she just look like a totally different human being in the other one? No, but they don't. They don't meet before the. Oh, so he wouldn't know anyway.

1:14:51No. No, but even in the in the regular Cinderella though does her do her step. Does her stepmother and step sisters do they recognize her at the ball? No, they don't either. That's the question is so that she just look totally different. She looks really familiar, but like in the animated film, it's like they're not like upfront and seen her. It's like they're like they're dancing so much that the stepmom is like following around the car. I like how they did that with burning up Peter's. Yeah, yeah, trying. Okay, gotcha. So it's like that. But it's like so she's not necessarily getting a really good look at of her. Okay. And they tried to do that. This looks exactly the same. Her hair instead of in a low ponytail is up in the top, you know, the top. Beautiful thing with the, you know, the whole thing. It's not drastic, but like for them, it's this idea of like seeing somebody who's like, I mean, to me, I wish in this film, she would have kind of been like dirty looking all the time. Yeah, just not makeup on. Something agreed. 100%. Yeah. You know, like with hair like in her face more, like just really ragged looking.

1:15:52Just stood on her face. Yes, that's that's what I would have assumed. Because the old one, it's all magic and, you know, it's nothing. Yeah, sure. But this one, I feel like they could have made her look. I agree. You know, I agree. A little bit more to wear this now beautiful version. Yeah. Yeah, because that's clearly a mutant in general. That actually makes me a little angry with you. I don't want to say, I agree. We'll go with irritated. How much you, you literally just hammered Hannah Montana. But then one of your favorite cartoons is that you know, no, Nistra does isn't one of my favorites. It's okay. It's not a huge ninja. Okay, no, I like ninja. I'm not irritated. No, no, no, no. Oh, God, I've told you many a time that it's my least favorite thing about Superman. Yes. Like it's like I don't, yeah, not a fan. Anyway, Christopher also has a funny feeling that he's met this woman before probably because he's met that woman before. But can't place it. And Cinderella pretends they've never crossed paths. See she is pretending.

1:16:52But clearly is. Yeah, is clearly down bad starting a new song. Ten minutes ago. No, I went on and rewatched it. You were right. Yeah, she watched the same. She sees him go. Yeah, starting a new song. Ten minutes ago. This is Christopher's big moment admitting he fell in love. The minute she walked through the doors, Cinderella joins in. And it's a couple made in heaven. We get another big dance number with everyone on the ballroom floor. It's very old Hollywood feeling. And you can immediately see it with this movie with such a big expense for Disney. Such a larger scope than any decoms we'd seen at that period. But the whole booming up in the camera, big sweeping camera shots and everybody in the beautiful dresses swirling in swing. Really wonderful to watch something like this. Courges. Yeah, really great. It looked like a younger version of like Bridgerton, what they've done with some of their scenes now where you're just like and it's all the gowns just switching and aww. Really, really cool looking. I buy an E3 top. And I like to the song. I like them singing to each other. He's obviously got a magnificent voice. Yes.

1:17:52And they look great together. So yeah, this was a fun like Hollywood prints and princess scene. It was. The ball. Yes. It was like my dreams, my dreams. While the stepmom and step sisters spy on them, they're being real haters trying to figure out who this unusual, who this unusual, admittedly beautiful girl is. And I love how they were singing it. Well, I guess she's gorgeous. Like that whole kind of thing. Why not they love us? Eventually they waltzed back inside where the king and queen become very interested in this girl stealing their son's heart. They have some questions. The queen pulls Cinderella off the side to interrogate her about her family

1:23:02and meet her parents. But with no real answers for her possible mother-in-law, she sprints off. Seeing this unfolded Christopher's, of course, furious and takes off after her. The king thinks the girl seemed lovely, but the queen thinks there are too many unanswered questions. Back outside, Cinderella has regrouped with Whitney, who doesn't understand why she wants to return to her life as a servant so early. By the way, I love that it's with Whitney. It's her fairy god. It's Whitney. It's always Whitney. It's always Whitney. It's Whitney. It's Whitney. By the way, if you're going to turn into something at midnight, don't show up at 1120. Well, that's when you're so sometimes. At first when she went 12, like I was kind of like, you need to be happy with whatever you get. That's what my response to Monroe would be. But then it's like, but she's clearly going so late. Yeah, did you have to drop me off at 1140? Like what's happening? What's happening? Can you have like a couple hours?

1:24:04I mean, give me an hour. At least give me a solid hour to land this dude. Like, come on, I'm good. By the way, keep in mind, 20 minutes ago was a scullery made. You'd spoken a man once in my life. You're giving me 25 minutes to go and land this guy. He's a prince. He's 60 minutes. I mean, 60. Come on. I mean, that was rough. The stance number took 35. Yes, seriously. My God. Oh, I'm telling you. Anyway, back outside Cinderella has regrouped with Whitney, as we're talking about, who doesn't understand why she wants to return to her life as a servant so early. And just as Cinderella starts to explain herself, Whitney disappears. The prince arrives to Professor's love. He wants to meet everyone in her life, which the kids now call love bombing. So Cinderella is, of course, apprehensive, as they talk about what he's looking for in a mate. Cinderella suggests a servant, but the prince explains he has servants. What he needs is a partner. Christopher knows he's got to do something about this. So he gets down on one knee, and he asks if she believes and love it for sight.

1:25:04She admits she does. He proclaims he finally feels like himself. And she says she knows exactly how he feels. And this turns into her next song. Do I love you because you're beautiful, which is long title here. But what did you think of this song? It's the long title. The long title. The long title. This was, first of all, in no world, have I lived in that they don't have, so this is love in this movie. What do you mean? Oh, I don't know what that means. So this is love is the song of the animated movie that they waltz to. And that's this song or no? No. Oh, it's not in this movie. So when they started doing this, I'm like, this song. Oh, gotcha. So they can't think of this song. Oh, gotcha. So they can't think they left out a really famous song. So this is love. They do it in the, they did it in the, in the descendants movie. Oh, okay. Yeah. Okay. When we see them for the first time, remember she watches and she's like, yes, but that's their song. They didn't do it in this movie.

1:26:04I'm like, what is going on? Oh, they left a big, big, big, big, big, big, famous, this is the Cinderella song. Anyway, this is love is the big song that they fall in love in. And I could not believe that that wasn't. Wow. Okay. So I think no matter what was done right here, it wouldn't matter. We rewatching it. It didn't matter. It didn't, I don't remember carrying it all before when I was younger. But I do now. And I can't believe that I had to, and this was another kind of boring song. They're sitting face to face. The whole time they're sitting face to face. Do I'm thinking, oh, my gosh, I don't know if I could get through this. I think I would laugh the whole time. No, my question is, are they singing face to face? I don't think they are. No, I think they actually have. No, they are. No, I think they took a suit. They superimposed them on top of each other. Like, go watch it again. It's like they took her and they took him and they meld them together. So their faces are like together. I don't think they're actually sitting like smushed up against each other. That's what I'm thinking of.

1:27:04I think that was a video. I think that was a trick on the film. They're not actually, oh, my God. It's like, smush your faces together. Closer. No, I'm pretty sure that was that was like a thing. Were you thinking of a dream as a wish your heart makes? Yes. Okay, that's from Michaela. That's also not in this movie. I don't know what's going on. Go back and look, I don't think I think smushed face was part of the thing. Wow, I think you're like, it's smushed up closer. Yes, they both reveal they dreamt love would happen like this and then they kiss. But just as they start to enjoy it, the clock strikes midnight. Uh oh, Cinderella pulls away knowing the spells about to wear off. Christopher is worried. He doesn't even know her name. She runs through the crowd and darts up the stairs. But even the king doesn't want her to get away. Because remember, he thinks she's hot. Once outside, Cinderella's dress starts to transform back into the dish rags. Time has run out. We see her glass slippers start to sprint

1:28:06and she passes a smash pumpkin. The only thing left from her carriage when Christopher finally gets out the door. She is gone. When her stepmom and step sisters eventually make it back home, they pretend like they had the most successful night with the prince clues to the fact that Cinderella was there. Witness to it all. They just completely downplay this mysterious woman who arrived acting as if he might pick one of them. Her stepmom asks Cinderella what she was doing on night. She says just daydreaming, imagining the ball. Then she describes the party and her participation perfectly creating some real suspicion among the girls. Are you laughing at the ball again now? No, no, no. Okay. You heard ball overlapping. No, no, no, no. Okay. Hoping I have it ruined Cinderella's ball for you at this point. No. Well, I'm thinking about the ball. Well, I'm thinking about the ball. No, I'm thinking about the ball. No, I'm thinking about how they she's. She was very kind of caddy. And I kind of liked this little aspect of her with this.

1:29:08I'm like, oh, that must have been really embarrassed. And also being like, oh, did you meet anyone? No, I know one talk to them. Like all of that was so good. And she was the hot girl everybody is talking about. Pretty great. Yes. And then we get our next song. When you're driving through the moonlight, all about her experience and honestly revealing too much of the truth, everyone's starting to realize she's recapping what actually happened. And as glorious and possibly truthful as it sounds, her stepmom erupts. She calls it rubbish and sends the step sisters to bed. The idea that the mystery woman who looks just like Cinderella but in the nice dress could be Cinderella is just not possible because Cinderella is too common. Her mother was common and her father was weak. And the idea that Cinderella could become a princess is unthinkable. A defeated Cinderella sneaks outside and prays to her dad. She knows she promised she'd stay with her stepmom. But after tonight she doesn't think she can. She deserves love. This leads into another snippet of the song, Lovely Night, which is interrupted by the return of Whitney, the very godmother. Whitney says if Cinderella really does love the prince,

1:30:09she should let him know. Because he didn't fall in love with the fancy gown or the makeup, he would love who she really is. Back at the castle, Prince Christopher is talking about how he's just fallen in love with her dress and her makeup. I'm kidding. Prince Christopher has been all night starving himself. Again, it's been four hours, bro. You're not on a hunger strike. And rubbing a glass slipper that Cinderella left behind. I was going to ask about this. And now you've answered the question for me. This was the gift that the fairy godmother left for everybody. Yes. So she could be found. Copy that. Well, I don't know necessarily to be found. I always took it as like a gift for her to always remember this wonderful night she had. But doesn't the fairy godmother know everything? And she knows it eventually. The slipper is going to lead back to Cinderella. I don't know what the rules on fairy godmother is. You don't want one. I was never told. What? What? What? The rules are for fairy godmother. So I'm still waiting for my. I'm still waiting for my. And I'm around. Wow. Yeah. So I'm just I'm glad that that that worked out though. You you you you you close the plot hole for me.

1:31:09I like it. Christopher says he will stop it. Nothing to find her. She's not like the other girl. She's different. We get some very lovely singing from whoopee here. Making sure her son really does love this girl. He hardly knows. And I looked it up. And it is really whoopee singing. So that's great. Yeah. Well, sister rack. This. We've got to sing. What we can sing all really well. Do you remember sister act? I never saw. What? I never saw sister act. I never saw. I never saw. I never saw. I never saw. I never saw. I never saw. And my ex girlfriend was in sister act two. I never saw that either. Yes. I know. I never saw. Jennifer love you. It was wonderful in sister act. That's great. I never saw any of any of the. I'm any of the. You're a terrible boy for. I never saw any of the sister acts. Yeah. Hey, at all fairness. I don't think she's seen Trojan war and she was in it. So yeah. Uh, yeah. No, who've he's got a voice? That's cool. Is sister act a Disney movie? Can we watch it on our thing? Probably not. Oh. Yes, sister act as a Disney film. All right. We'll watch that. Excellent. After some encouragement from his dad, Christopher comes up with a plan. Alongside Lionel, he will take the glass slipper through as a good plan.

1:32:09Take the glass slipper throughout the town, trying to find the perfect fit. And when they find that young woman, assuming that one person in the world has one size shoe, that's strange. But when he does find that woman, he will marry her. Christopher embraces his parents and in barks on his journey as the shoe salesman. And so the arduous process begins with a montage. Love a montage. Lionel's got to touch every woman's foot in the area as Christopher just watches on, which looks a little creepy. We see failure after failure. Lionel even starts sweating as more women line up. Will they ever find the mystery girl amongst a montage of feet? And they only show here's the thing I thought was interesting. And I know why they have to do it for visual, you know, visually, but they only show one girl with feet too small. Everybody else's feet don't fit into the shoes because they're too big. Only one time do they show it too small. Yeah. So this is where just in the village of huge, footed women. Apparently. Eventually the shoe team make it to Cinderella's house in Kaliapis, where is it's her shoe, but when it doesn't fit, they move on to Minerva,

1:33:10who is also not a match. And during the trions, the evil stepmother secretly locks the kitchen door and puts the key in her bra, making sure Cinderella who is packing her things to leave can't join the search. Wonder if they're done. Lionel asks if there are any other girls in the house. The stepmother admits, yes, there is one more. Then jumps on the couch yourself. She wants to try on the slipper. Lionel clarifies young women in the house, but she, but she commentaires the shoe and places on her foot to find a perfect fit. The slippers a perfect match for this hag. She jumps up and down celebrating because she's about to become princess. And she and the prince live happily ever after. And that's our film. Let's do real reviews. I'm kidding. Christopher calls that impossible. That can't be it. And he is right. The stepmother's joy quickly turns into fear. As the slipper is cutting off her circulation, it's too small after all. Christopher asks one last time, are there any other women in the house? The family swears there isn't. Then they shuffle to block the kitchen door, not even a servant girl. Oh, this catches the attention of Christopher, who now wants to know what exactly is behind the door.

1:34:12They're blocking. Lionel demands the key. And when they find the open it, no one's there. Cinderella's gone. Christopher leaves dodging the stepmother's desperate pleas to take one of her daughters. And as he storms out the door, he sees her. It's Cinderella trying to run away, but bumping into the royal carriage along the way. Christopher smiles from ear to ear, thrown into a situation similar to their first meeting at the marketplace, and start repeating their exact words. He realizes this is the girl. He's known her all along. Lionel brings over the slipper and Christopher slips it under her foot. As her stepmother watches on screaming in agony, it is a perfect fit. They kiss as Whitney Godmother appears one last time to re-sing impossible, because we haven't heard that word enough, and celebrate one of the most famous happily ever after's of all time. We're transported to the wedding day with joy in the streets as the couple is paraded through the town. Cinderella waves to Whitney, and she's the only one who can see her in a doorway along the route. They arrive back at the castle, her new home, for the big ceremony. Her stepmother and sisters try their hardest to attend, but are stopped at the gate, with a smiling king and queen by their side, Cinderella and Prince Christopher are pronounced man and wife as hologram Whitney flies above the scene,

It's like, oh god, this is going to be good. It's like being beaten over the head with a ball invitations and constantly kicked by dancing glass slippers. Way too saccharine to the point where I felt I needed insulin to reduce the sugar content I was swallowing.

1:40:30Mark. Get out of here, Mark. We don't want to know anything with Mark. Yeah, what was that? I of course, because I'm such a fan and have been forever have the five star of you. This was by the famous XYDHN or Zidane. Yeah, you're right. See you when you're not. See you when you're not. It's just a rush. And it reads as follows. This is hands down the best version of Cinderella I've ever watched. The diversity is amazing and the songs are catchy and the acting is, okay, it's good fun for the whole family. Actually, what it says is it's good fun for the wild family. Not to mention the most beautiful version of Cinderella's dress to date. I agree with some of that and disagree with others. We are now doing our feature game, which of course is our very own Cinderella. That's Sabrina's favorite portion. And that is our game today is called the Disney casting chair, which yikes. Who exactly are we playing with today? Makela. Makela! Makela! Okay. So, Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella has one of the most impressive casts when it comes to decoms obviously.

1:41:33But Disney animated movies have always had a bit of star power attached. We're going to be giving a handful of names and we have to guess which classic Disney animated movie that's at least 30 years old. They all started together. Three out of five wins. Are you ready? Yes. Alright, here we go. Number one. Scott Weiner, Gilbert Godfreyd, Frank Welker, and Robin Williams. What do you got, Sabrina? Aladdin. Aladdin is gotta be it. Correct. Alright, number two. 1:43:33That's what I thought. That's what I thought. Yeah. Okay. Can we do a Sabrina Cs, please? Yes. Okay. I just have to start because the movie starts with Whitney's voice is of the gods. Oh, my God. It starts off the movie. I just have to start. And although we get quickly into the song I didn't really love to start it off with the song that I do love, even though Will doesn't, has to be noted. I'm not saying that. I'm not saying that. I'm not saying that. I'm not saying that. I'm not saying that. I'm not saying that. But then I put the same thing. Why do I think? Why did I almost think I was watching Beauty and Beast for a quick second? But I wasn't. One of the things you didn't say, but this was one of my notes. I started writing what I thought Will was going to say about certain things, was Will asking How they didn't realize they were both singing the same song as they were standing right next to each other. I have to give that stuff up. I have just given up the idea of course. Of course I did, but I, I, I, I, I, I couldn't, I couldn't do it. Another thing that this movie I've started to, you know, again, you guys, we're being asked

1:44:34to critique it. Did started go kind of it started feeling like we didn't know where we were going in the direction because then I felt like they're meat cute. Nice. I wrote it wrong. I put cute meat. Of course. I don't know. I don't know. It is meat cute. I felt a little Aladdin-ish to me because again, this is away from Cinderella does not meet the Prince prior to the ball. Right. So this is away from that. So I'm going, this feels a little Aladdin. Like when she meets Aladdin out and she is the princess, but she's dressed as like a commoner. That felt a little Aladdin. So I'm kind of going, where are we going with this movie? How many other Disney movies are we going to throw in? I feel like they did that on purpose. I feel like they did that on purpose. Yeah. I don't know if it was meant to be or if they were trying to find their way or what was going on, but we had that. Then the next thing is I did talk about the character actually making sense to me with this the what is it third or second?

1:45:36Technically third song where she's in the house by herself. The chair. The corner. The chair. The young then started to make sense to me. Yeah. And then the next thing was whoo-bae. I was so excited. I forgot she was in this movie well. Yes, great. She's great. She's so good. Yeah. We didn't mention we mentioned Alex or Jason Alexander's routine and how great his performance was. But we didn't even talk about his tapping. His whole little dance soul, not so on the box. On the box was phenomenal. Yeah, he was great. So good. And. Wait, what was it? You mentioned at the beginning that you said in your subrenacy that you were going to talk about something in from his dance routine that kept popping on screen that drive was driving crazy. What is it? I had a couple of things I was talking about like this is the I started kind of riding in paragraphs instead of my notes like I normally do. There was the only thing I would say about it that was driving me nuts was the stupid cake that they had. Oh, the fake cake. The fake cake that kept tilting and it was such a it was in so many of the shots.

1:46:42I could have taken it once. Maybe a tiny bit at the end, but like it kept coming around and it didn't in any way look like a real cake. No, that's a problem. It just looked like a fake. It was it was it was it needed. I didn't I didn't have any a baker cool fine, but like this cake was just ridiculous. And then moving into. I didn't understand and then all of a sudden while we as the fairy godmother is starting to create her carriage and all of that that dome thing that was on the shelf was apparently mice in a cage and why should keeping just mice trapped in her. That's what I say. Yeah, it was weird. Yeah, I didn't know what that was at all. Yeah, nothing. Yeah, they used it. It was weird and then it was and then and the end of the movie the stepmother refers to not even mice were in there. Like it said not even mice. I'm like, why do was that a thing? People kept mice and kitchens. I don't know.

1:47:42I would say that it for a character that's trapped in her own cage. She would never trap animals in a cage and keep them. No, and that's not a good. And that's how she felt about herself. Yeah, so yeah, just have random mice running around. It's not a hard thing. Yeah, it was weird to me. Brandy's Walt scene in the at the ball was so good. And I do remember her being on dancing with the stars. I don't think it's a season I watched closely, but I will be YouTubeing any all of her dances to see if she actually gets to do either like a rumba or a Waltz because what she did in this movie was so good. Yeah, it was so good. She glided across the floor, which is the big thing you want to do in a wall. She had to hold your frame and you're supposed to glide. So there should never be fleas in any ways. Also with the ball. And I really have a hard time even doing this because I would never want to have anyone else not unsee something because I love Brandy so much in her coming down.

1:48:46That staircase was so gorgeous. Oh, magical. Just was it was pure magic. However, I am a little upset with the customer of this project because her crown was just ever so tilted. Oh, and it drove me. It drove you crazy. You just want to go over there and fix that. I just want to be like, who did this is Brandy? Who did this brandy? And then two things and I'm almost done, guys. There were lots of things that I just I loved. But when the montage of the fee and Christopher, the fact that he was there because he also is not there in the animated movie, the princess not there. He's not okay. Why are they trying on shoes when he could just see the girl and go, this is her. That's the part of the movie. And then the shoes and the whole thing did, but this was the worst aspect of if he's there and she walks in the room. It's her. Yeah. There we go. There's the giant mutant turtle.

1:49:46Exactly. Exactly. And then lastly, this didn't bother me, but it was something to note. This kiss that lasted so long. This is our longest kiss yet to date. Did you also notice that she never comes close? Like he kind of goes in for a kiss kiss and like opens her mouth and she's like, yeah, I didn't notice that. But this was so long. It was like, and then it's like, we see it and then they go and it's like this big, long pan out, so long as thing we've seen so far. This is the longest kiss that we've had at Disney yet. So that's my last one. There we go. Well, thank you very much. It is now time, of course, in our program where we're going to score the last movie that we just watched. And this week we're going to go, we're going to go one, two, ten. Yes, because we're going to make ten the best. And so we've got one to ten hologram Whitney's, one to ten huge CGI castles, one to ten hams, little corner chairs, nervous itchy, nervous itches, one to ten horny kings, one

1:50:48to ten ninja turtle eye masks, love bombing princes, plot hole slippers, one to ten montages of feet. Or what's the one you wanted to add? What was it? I can't even remember what exactly, something with ball. I was just, I forget what it was. You're picking this week. What are you picking? Oh, man. Ooh. I guess we'll go with love bombing princes. All right, one to ten love bombing. I wish I could think of the last one that I thought, but I can't remember. Yeah, it's something with a ball, so we probably shouldn't do it anyway. I think I get to go first this time. And so here's the thing. Look, this was a good movie. It was a good movie. The cast, phenomenal, the look, amazing. It's every Disney kind of a check box that you want. It's like, it's great. My the weakest part of this musical for me was the music. I, there was the songs to me were not great. The great ones are great, but those are few in far between.

1:51:51And I thought the majority of the songs I frankly found a little boring. Or a little confusing. Right. And so I, that when the the weakest part of the musical is the music, something's not great. That being said, good movie. And that's why I think I'm fair in giving this a seven love bombing princess. Okay. Okay. Again, the music had this been one banger after another. This would have been a ten Disney movie. Yeah. But it wasn't I thought the mute, I thought the the songs actually let it down a little bit. So that's that's my opinion. I'm going to say as a kid, this was a ten out of ten out of ten every time. Right. It was always it. Now and also more than ever have I seen so many damn musicals, right? So that also makes a big difference too. Right. And comparison, there are so much of this that still holds up still is so beautiful, so great.

1:52:52The actors, the cast is wonderful. The costume mean, I mean, we've already talked on and on and on about it. All of that is still great. This time around, I do agree that the the music, it makes me though want to go see how to find a original of the I'm sure it's out there. It's fine to see if I can find that to see because again, I don't know it enough to know, okay, they use this like, I feel like I feel impossible has to be a newer like the new was made for this movie. I don't know. So then I think that would that would make it make a little bit more sense, maybe have a better understanding of the original because other than that, to me, I watch it back and I go, I wish they would have just done all new music. Yeah, yeah, because of that. And because if they when you compare impossible and some of the other songs, the one that Jason Alexander, if those were all the new music, then it was like, I wish they would have just

1:53:53done it, right? Just do a whole new one. Yeah. However, they didn't and that's where it does fall for me now at this age rewatching that pulls my number back. Not too far though.
