3:03From the road, from the road, who tried to get parking? Yeah, exactly. Six-week road trip. My wife, my wife and my son decided, oh, we met up with some friends and they road trip with us as this happened a couple times. And everyone wanted to go see Niagara Falls. Yeah. I warned them. Yeah. I said, it's not worth it, guys. It's going to be crowded. So much. It's going to be so awful. I lost this one. I was just like, you know what? I'm going to be better. I'm going to be quiet. Sure enough, we pull into Niagara the town of whatever. I don't even know what's called Niagara Falls. I think it's on the American side. You know that? Okay, on the American side. And it's just a show. Just people everywhere, we're driving in circles. We need gas at this point. We're trying to coordinate with the other car, with our friends in it. And I'm just, you know, $30 for parking people. $30 for parking.

4:04And I'm like, Alex, I'm, you know, and like, there's somebody yelling at us because we pulled into a gas station and this guy's like yelling at me. And I'm like, and I'm like, I'm not going to pay $30 for parking for you guys to go. And she's like, you're doing it. You're doing the thing again. It's like, Mount Rushmore. And I was like, okay, I'm going to try and be zen about this. And I said, I will pay the $30. Or how about you guys just jump out? And I'll drive the car in circles until you get out. Yeah. Or until you've seen Niagara Falls, both my son and my wife. I was like, take us luck much time as you want. You know what? I just need. And so they were like, okay. So I was like, maybe I am just being too, you know, too much of too money conscious, whatever. I drive two blocks from the $30 parking lot, meter parking. There you go. That is how they get you. I was right. They just stayed in the car. We could have driven two more blocks. We went to right on the end and walked Niagara Falls.

5:05And I was like, yeah, because it's so waste. What are we doing here people? I have to tell you, I, this reminds me what you saying. We're asking the question I was dying to know too was did you then go join them and you saying no. I saw. And I was like, yeah, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. And I don't know if she's the originator of this concept, but I absolutely love it. It was. It's a real that is things a goddess says in awkward situations. Okay. I don't talk about that casually. When somebody's talking about something that you just, you know, whatever, like something.

7:05But that's how they get you. My point was right. Which is this is where we shouldn't pay thirty dollars for parking. That's a waste of money when I know there's a better way to do this. And there was. There was. I could have also just paid for the parking. But I never really. You're George. Yeah. Yeah. And it's because the answer says in Seinfeld, he's like paying for parking is like prostitutes. Why would I pay for it if I can maybe get it for free if I just put in a little bit of effort? And so it's exactly what it is. So between the two cars, we would have spent sixty dollars to look at Niagara Falls from, you know, a crowded platform. Right. Was it on our cars? You know, they shut it off at night. Yeah. It's just that they just think they turn it off at night. Well, the other thing is like they have this misty boat ride. Yeah. The lady of the mist. And then they sell you ponchos. Yeah. Of course. Another way. That's how they get you. You got to wear the ponchos. You got to pay for the ride to get soaking wet. It's a course. Of course. For the thing to protect you.

10:14Randy Randy. Her first of seven girl meets world scripts. She began her career in animated shows like George of the Jungle and the Emperor's new school, eventually leading to Disney for imagination movers and Doc McStuffins. Then Nick for that girl Lele. She also worked at the Disney Channel on both Koop and Cammy ask the world and Vampirina Teenage Vampire. She was a great presence in the. She's awesome writer. She was never in the writers room. But on set she was great with coming up with jokes and like just really I feel like was a great voice for this. Yeah, she is an incredible collaborator. She is an incredible leader. She is whipsmart incredibly fast with pitches like you're saying if you want if you need someone down on set with you coming up with with ults or firing away quickly. She's the person you want there with you. She also was a good counter voice to Michael. She was never afraid to speak up. She was never afraid to speak up and she was always respectful.

11:15She was never confrontational but she had no problem offering the counter point and saying I would like to disrespectfully disagree. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Randy Barnes. 17:30type of school yeah that's west coast right because east coast we had six seven eight so did we so it's just it just depends but my mom so like in Orange County my mom also had seven eight nine so it's not regional like east west it's certain districts yeah k through five is how we did it but k through six is how some some schools do it and then seven eight nine is middle school correct and that's what I had k through five six seven eight is middle school and then nine ten eleven twelve is high school yeah that was same yeah I'm surprised that they decided to make it seventh grade for them to start because boy me twirled started it sixth grade but then leap the head see yeah I know then it did right yeah so I guess they just want right yeah I think they were trying to to float that middle ground of not too young not too old yet right right right I love this line Maya is shocked this thing goes to ninth grade great great yeah oh Riley is confused by the ninth grader putting on eyeliner why that my explains brings out your eyes and Riley is terrified why would I want to take out my eyes Maya assure her she's not

18:33taking out her eyes but now the girl has broken out the eyelash curler and Riley doubles down and I think she is the older girl notices Riley and holds out the beauty tool it's an eyelash curler it doesn't even hurt Riley grabs it notes these things do freak me out they look here I can't kind of rip your eye I know I know my kids are scared awful surgical tour it does it terrifies me like I yeah it's always has always has I remember first seeing it as a kid me like what is that my mom and I do it now too but my mom when I was a kid so she would curl her eyelashes and then she get right up into the mirror with a safety pin and you break it apart of she breaks apart she separates her individual eyelashes with the same I saw I've seen that too and it's like what are you doing writer if I see that in one of your movies I'll know it came from a real place I Riley grabs it notes I have eyelashes Maya smirks watch this Riley attempts to use the curler and is instead apparently attacked squirming as it's uncontrollably clamped to her eye

19:35ha Maya shakes her head anybody else would stop Riley is still struggling when her confused dad walks up from behind and instructs her to just open it Riley finally releases herself and is relieved thanks daddy a disturbed Cory walks to his classroom as Riley hands the girl back her eyelash curler just then Farcle arrives on a mission ladies school dance I'm gonna put you both down for dance numbers one through all of them we will alternate you and me me and you when you are not dancing with me you may not dance with anybody else you may sit and wait until you dance with me again Maya scoffs yeah none of this is happening Farcle is visibly sad and politely asks well then may I have one dance with each of you Riley feels bad and agrees ha he laughs that's what I wanted he just got played by Farcle she celebrates and walks away Lucas walks down the stairs Riley raises her hand and squeaks out Lucas Maya corrects her eagerness hand grown up voice Riley tries again in a deeper tone hello Lucas Lucas hello very funny bit yeah it's so good yeah it's very cute

20:39yes so she says Lucas again he goes she goes Lucas hand Lucas voice Lucas hello look as hello he smiles as Maya approaches him to mock him hey he ha you go into tick-tock shake your body time because you know it's not a square dance so it's not gonna be a whole whole lot of dosy-dohin he smirks well then I'm sure I'll have no idea what to do and you can make fun of me Maya is immediately frustrated and pointed him why is the dance called tick-tock shake your body time is it or is she just no it's no it is it's on the poster is it is it a reference to tick-tock as in because tick-tock was tick-tock a thing in 2020 I don't think it was no no that's why I was confused it's like why is it called this it seems like it's a joke or a reference of some sort of I know oh oh okay Google when did when was tick-tock invented 2016 yeah that's what I thought okay so interesting hmm maybe it's from like tick-tock you don't stop is not a song yeah you don't stop

21:40yeah that was a huge hit in 2013 you know what 2014 it's 2014 guys there you go get that we get 2014 okay Maya is immediately frustrated and pointed him you're not playing this right he gingerly shakes her finger well that's certainly not my intention I'll try harder next time she commands I will break you but Lucas is unfazed well if that's what makes you happy then I certainly can't wait for it ma'am he pretends to tip a cowboy hat at her and she shutters in anger oh Riley asks him if he's going to the dance in a more direct way and he answers thought I would you Maya audibly gags you'll both be there he'll be the one in the cowboy hat going like this she then starts comically country dancing next to him the bell rings and Lucas looks to Riley you go into class Riley responds thought I would you and as they leave Maya is still dancing a group of fellow students have crowded around her and started clapping she abruptly stops this isn't for you but the kids keep clapping and she modestly blushes okay fine and she goes back to dancing so cute so cute yeah now we're in the Matthews living room to pangin augy are on the couch reading a

22:44story when Riley walks in mom can I ask you a question augy offers his help you can ask me a question Riley explains it's a girl thing augy but he's offended you think I don't know about girls Riley sighs okay I'm at a certain age and then augy cuts her off I don't care he gets up and walks away now with mom and daughter alone to pangin leads her back to the conversation you're at a certain age Riley wastes no time you had to know this was going to happen to pangin cautiously nods I know a lot of things are going to happen which one is this Riley answers make up and to pangin lets out a sigh of relief oh good Riley asks I can have some and to pangin quickly answers no Riley doesn't get it why not well to pangin explains because makeup leads to other things that Riley jumps in we have our first school dance on friday night to pangin notes and we're there we notice that augy has been eavesdropping from the hallway when Riley wants to know what's the difference between daytime makeup and nighttime makeup Riley breaks it to her none because you're not wearing any

23:48I know I also love I love the juxtaposition of the fact that in between each take a team of people were rushing in to put more makeup on her face so much different as a child actor where it's just like here's the four people coming to paint your faces we're doing that were you wearing makeup this seems like a non-issue but again I don't have children so is this a thing where it's like you're in the seventh grade you can't wear makeup is that too young to start wearing makeup no I think I was wearing like light you know I don't actually don't really remember but no I don't my my parents weren't crazy about these types of rules I also started shaving my legs when I was really young I was like one of the first people to shave their legs in my girl group so did you need to or were you just doing it no I was just excited you know I wanted to be 45 since I was you didn't have hairy legs you were just shaving your I mean I'm a hairy person I'm I'm maltees we are covered in just riddled riddled I wouldn't think if you was a hairy person oh I'm a beast just a beast

24:56just a carpet yes you're just a carpet from the neck down I'm basically yeah hasn't it yeah it's just you're back here no I don't have back hair but I I I wouldn't they were it was blonde hair on my legs but like I was excited to get rid of it I I knew that my mom shaved I was like oh I was all in to be you know a grown woman the minute I could just not with voice as a person high gene wise yes personal hygiene wise what side did you part your leg hair on middle part it was a middle part yeah it was great I don't know Riley isn't letting up but but what about when I do to panga answers when we decide you're at the right age to start wearing makeup Riley suggests Friday and to panga shakes her head no and offers some advice you might find that you prefer a more natural look during the day some women prefer to go a bit bolder at night you're not allowed to hang out with those women funny really I thought it was

26:00funny it's it's a funny line I mean it's I can't stand to panga like this thing but it's it's also New York City like seventh grader in New York City would not be sheltered from makeup to this degree like it's just absurd and it's well it's again it's the traditional family the quote-unquote traditional family values of you know Disney Disney and Michael yeah I know I just what I really want to know is how can we make this about Cory yeah because it's got this become Cory story why because good because I feel like I feel like the person who would really weigh in on the makeup and who's it should affect the most is Cory agreed agreed you know what this is too much this is too much to my daughter she's had her scene for you've had your scene move it on what is gov it up how can we make this about Cory his obsessions and so Riley is adamant I want to paint my face wait Dupenga realizes something the dances Friday Riley gets nervous by her mom's tone you're doing

27:06that thing with your voice Dupenga reveals Friday is the last day for the Koney Island cyclone Riley knows what that means but it's our first dance and dad takes me to the roller coaster a bunch of times right Dupenga reminds her your father thinks of it as a tradition but Riley wants the truth how bad is this her mom breaks it to her your father thinks of it as the reason he wakes up in the morning Riley is optimistic maybe he won't remember this year set up set up come on get it just then Cory flings open the door and yells three days till cyclone day Dupenga smirks and asks him when his when is her birthday he proudly answers 148 days from cyclone day that's funny funny such a funny joke so funny but this doesn't make any sense you could go to a cyclone during the day what is it dance no no they get the last ride of the season literally the last ride they take before they turn off the cyclone until next year yeah then why is the video during the day listen writer writer

28:11writer writer it's a rom writer just has anybody been also Cory does not know when the dances he works at the school I know that's it's so dumb it's just like he's literally like mr. school he's his name is Cory school he doesn't know he doesn't know he has his a dare on a same day oh and for your class for your great teachers or class of course he knows that there's a dance just was in the hallway that I don't want to go to it of course she is either of you ridden the cyclone no is it good it's good but it's like you're being blood for a week after it's such a kid me shaker it's like the goofy sky school no it's not the goofy sky school oh we just went to an amusement park in in North Carolina called carer winds yeah and they have one of those two there's a certain type of roller coasters called

29:12like a mouse trap or whatever and and though that caroans it's like the six flags in North Carolina they describe it perfectly they're like this may look like a fun easy ride but it's good and it says because it doesn't bank when it turns it's terrifying and that's what it is it doesn't bank when it turns oh that's just turns right it just turns so and when you don't bank you think you're going to tip over it's such a terrifying feeling and it's just too jarring oh hit it so much if you pay for parking there no because you get it with your yearly past we have a not-spare yearly pass so I get it out to all the six flags in the country oh I was gonna say if you have a yearly past the carol is or whatever the carol is no mix six flags will honor it because they bought knots so now they own knots so now when you get a gold pass to knots you get to go to all and you get preferred parking how often do you go to amusement parks well we go to knots we were going like two or three times a year oh wow okay so you know and now now that it includes six flags in these already

30:17been to six like six flags magic mountain and knots this year yeah it's paying for itself I haven't been to knots very farman so long it was an actual farm the last time I was there they do have the jelly there they've a restaurant to paying a turns to Riley and wishes her luck just as Ogi runs into the room to hug Cory daddy Cory picks him up and places him on the table tell me stuff Ogi blirts out Riley wants to wear makeup and Riley's offended hey little spy Cory is offended don't call him a spy he's not a spy but Ogi pulls out a piece of paper from his pocket that reads Ogi spy I am a spy you made me a card Cory got caught all right he is a spy and guess what he's working for me and he just got promoted Cory pulls a piece of paper out of his pocket that says Ogi super spy on it but now he's got it so just everybody has to spy on Rowan I'm right on the girl that's it you have to know I need her surrounded by people telling me her every move it's really weird yes yes yes yes it's cute but it's weird like the card thing is cute but it's the

31:19card thing is cute yes but it is weird that it's weird that a teacher slash father is yeah yeah I know Ogi celebrates his promotion super spy and Riley hugs her dad to better him up dad Cory looks to Ogi again hey super spy tell me stuff Ogi snitches again Riley wants to go to the school dance on dun dun dun cyclone night Cory has caught off guard wow it's the same night Riley nods Cory appears to accept the conflict I understand I understand completely then he calmly apologizes I'm sorry you'll have to miss the dance oh no to Penga isn't satisfied with his response and asks him to try again he nods and clears his throat at Riley I'm sorry you'll have to miss the dance he thinks about it nope same thing then he takes his place on the couch Riley sits down next to him but it's my first dance dad in response Cory grabs his heart in utter pain oh

33:23that guilt trip on your kid for what yeah they this Cory get more likable as the show goes on I hope I don't know I don't know this is wild yeah yeah it really is it really is I mean yeah no I mean it's very inappropriate parenting slash teaching yes it's a pretty regular basis of the show awful it's awful yeah and then the last thing she says that initiates the response of you're gonna have to make up with me is there's just some things that mom can naturally teach me like what do you know about makeup there isn't even anything remotely wrong no with what she said dad I I love you but I'm more comfortable talking about this stuff with mom yeah mom is gonna I want mom to teach me this I want I want to go through this with my mom and I think again maybe

34:27it's a network note that they didn't want her to actually say something hurtful but I would have so much rather I would have way more preferred this lesson to actually be don't say things you don't mean if she was upset about something and just and she did say something hurtful yeah she did actually say something that was kind of mean or that she didn't actually mean and then he could be then you could actually have real sympathy for him yeah right yeah she'd been more of a child if she'd been more yes a eradicated needs to learn I hate yeah I hate actually she's being insanely mature yes self-aware composed right and but I think that's kind of the point they're trying to make it that Cory is spinning out as a dad right like he's he's not willing to face that she's growing up that I mean Cory is supposed to be wrong in this situation right I do think that's where the story is going it's just yeah but the way he's also supposed to be the all-knowing teacher so it's

35:31again that contradicting yeah character impulses it's like I don't know yeah now deserted Riley looks at Topanga mom Topanga grabs Riley's hand and excitedly admits that went better than I thought we're now in Cory's classroom he happily greets every student that walks in the door friar sparkle heart and when Riley enters he scales you she starts to explain herself but he just cuts her off she sighs and walks toward desk Cory announces that he has the test results on Darwin and he was pleased to see some of them had evolved since the last quiz it's absolute silence until sparkle fakes a big laugh huh Cory thanks him and sparkle admits well you were drowning sir love the dad joke Cory starts passing out the tests and when Maya sees her grade she seems startled on the other hand Lucas is excited and sparkle boasts hey number 700 has with that he pulls out a noisemaker and blows on it to celebrate and that is a call back to Topanga's 699 a's I need one more

36:36give me 700 by the seventh grade uh-huh smarter than Topanga Cory gets to Riley and passes back her test against gowling you Riley shifts her focus to Maya and asks if she's okay Maya sighs he gave me Riley a shocked that's nuts you're a solid D student Cory now points out Lucas's work I took particular note of your position that evolution does not preclude the existence of how did you put it Lucas answers a guiding hand that has your best interest in heart well I'm glad you said that because the moral of this episode is that god and fathers are on the same yeah yeah this is also where I was like wait what what is this storyline now now they're wedging another storyline what's what the hell's happening and then I was like I mean the f the f yeah I know but it's actually when you were reading the recap of the up or the description of the episode it is I think technically the B story line yeah but it just comes in so late it does and it's and then it's not even woven in it's just like

37:36make up yeah cyclone dance dance and now it's now it's about Maya yeah who yeah it's just that's what I was sitting there going like they're just throwing everything they can it's yes some of these episodes Maya then raises her hand and when Cory calls on her she calmly states you failed me he suggests they talk about it after class but Maya laughs what's there to talk about you failed me you think I'm a failure there's nothing more for you to teach me Cory now looks to Riley oh come on both of you got to say that Maya gets up and Cory can't believe this you mean I lost you both as Maya gets to the door and Cory warns her you do not walk out of here undeterred she's stare some down before walking away after a few seconds of silence Riley raises her hand and Cory nods go so she runs out of class to follow her friend Cory turns back to his students who all quickly raise their hands he shouts no and they slowly lower them so some excellent teaching there as

38:37well it's jarring because again I wasn't there for any of this and just the idea of how important Fini was as that anchor yeah it's amazing to me that all of that has been thrown out like all of it and it's so it's I get the impulsive of wanting Cory to still be part of the world I still don't think he should have been the teacher but yeah if you're gonna make him the teacher make him Fini I mean it's it's so strange I don't know I don't know he's the source of anxiety about not knowing what to do with his daughter in one storyline yeah but then also the guiding hand that knows everything in the other storyline and needs to also father Maya which is just it's like but you're failing the whole the whole other storyline is about you failing right yeah right like yes yes yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

39:37back in the school hallway Maya is cleaning out her locker when Riley arrives she asks redecorating your locker Maya announces nope she's cleaning it out we see her pack a ukulele and a severed doll body Maya asks you want one because it's the last one you're gonna get Riley nods with excitement and Maya reaches into her locker we hear some carnival music and then we see her pull out a full blown cotton candy fluff which is a very funny joke very funny so of course it's weird but I don't mind see again this is where these three are big channel channel jokes yeah like you reach okay last one you're gonna get and I was like what the hell she reached it and comes out with the cotton candy that to me is like I want to see 22 minutes of those yeah why didn't why wasn't this shot the way we would have shot it on boy meets world yeah where you just see her reaching to locker from behind like where they could have been standing facing camera why do they always bring in a fourth wall and then shoot that direction I don't like it either here's one one memory I have from this show

40:42that I would like to share and that I think is funny so one of the things that Disney cares a lot about in their scripts is not showing too many unhealthy activities or treats so they want food to be healthy they want it to be balanced they're okay with a treat here and there but they definitely don't want an entire episode where somebody's you know gorging themselves on sweets there and so one of the one of the lines that we had had in in a script at some point early on was something about going to grab a slice you know the kids are in New York and let's go grab a slice and Disney had said do we have to sit could it you know does it have to be a slice of pizza could maybe could they go get some fruit and Michael was like no yeah they can't go get some fruit I'm sorry it's New York slice of a bubble we don't we don't we don't no one would say you want to go get a bowl of fruit yeah right exactly and so in this episode in bold before the table read the script

41:50said Maya reaches her hand in and pull you know pulls out cotton candy and then in bold it says she only holds it nobody eats it again no one ingests the cotton candy oh god I was like okay grab a slice I get the balance but come on let's go for slice they also wrote an entire storyline that they knew would not make it that we did at a table read I I didn't direct this episode but I was there when they did the blue cupcakes episode do you remember this kind of they did a whole breaking bad storyline yes remember breaking bad where he had he makes the blue and again so they did that where they made blue cupcakes with like a blue die and all the kids get addicted to it yeah really was one of the funniest table reads and I remember like I I turned a Michael and he's like oh we just did this to pistis the off they're never gonna let us go he's like but it was too funny

42:52it was it was great and they they do end up keeping I think a cupcake storyline and sugar or something but he they did a whole runner where it was about the blue the breaking bad storyline uh that's brilliant and yeah and then Michael just was like no we knew they're gonna cancel we're gonna change it but we had to do it so far that's so good Riley reminds her it's just one F but Maya says it's not about the paper her dad failed her Riley nods yeah I know and I'm not going to the cyclone I failed him can't we just call it even so is this them saying like where that's that's what we're saying and we're going with it I as a 12 year old girl failed my father failed my father because I want to go to my first dance I want to go to my school's first dance my first ever dance instead of the getting the last right of the season with him I failed him there and so now oh are we unclear what the storyline is I failed my dad and my dad failed to you yeah how good is breaking bad oh my god that show so good we should we watch that show that you could show it's a

43:57good show I think it's probably the greatest television show I agree because it's up there because it's start to finish like a novel yes I mean it's like it has the arc of every character perfect yeah it's so good acting as yeah it goes from like really funny comedy to like yeah your most heart breaking drama you've ever it's like it's pretty like yeah I've never watched a show and felt that intense on the edge of my seat yes so many times yeah you go through the range of every single human emotion better call Saul is really good too I've seen that one yeah oh my god it's just as good if not I mean not just as good but it's it's up there it's oh man okay Maya says no we can't we can just call it I'm leaving but Riley knows the drill she's gonna make a big deal out of this leave school forever and then be back by gym class Maya shakes her head not this time she means it but Riley isn't buying it all right I'll see you tomorrow Maya promises are no you won't and then Riley watches her best friend leave and this time she doesn't follow in the

44:58Matthews house Corey is on the computer watching old videos of him and Riley writing the cyclone algae enters and comforts his dad you okay buddy Corey tells him no I just lost the two most important girls in my life they revealed to Penga just a few inches away now concerned she asks how you doing Corey notes still got that one I was she got forgotten she got forgotten by the writers I love the idea though that the he's watching a video of them writing the cyclone from like 100 or 200 or 300 feet away and you hear like hold me daddy and he's like you got it it's like what are is there a mic are you might you're on the roller coaster what's happening this is the this kind of visual of stuff for me crazy I know they would write this into the script all the time and I'd be like why and yeah it's fine no like when we do the rodeo episode they originally wanted us to have them talking about rodeo watching a rodeo and they look over there and cut the stock footage

45:58and I was like I'm not gonna do that like there's no way that that will work there I just know about and I argued with Michael for hours and then finally got them to build the tent and they're watching the thing on a screen like I yeah because it just didn't make any sense to me in anyway this is a class I was like yeah how do you accept this hold me daddy like what are you listening to it's like obviously in the POV shot it's like this is just clearly stock footage from the site like yeah wouldn't the video also be on them like when I take a video I like it on no of course not it's just the thing on a bright sunny day and all in the winter back east then koney island where you actually have to shut it down so yeah Corey notes still got that one and she forces a grin I'm hanging on uh Gia Shirazam I'll always be here for you daddy me and you together forever the inmates all in response Corey thanks him but let's him know that's not really the way it works ogi ogi says he knows and then they both clutch their chests in agony to pangal

47:04laughs at her two sad little men and ogi was first to her I'm not really sad I'm just doing it for him ogi asks his mom you got this she nods I got it ogi walks away and Corey looks to his wife you got this to panga are you gonna make this all better she rests her head on his shoulder and they watch another cyclone video in this one Riley's begging her dad to hold her as they approach a big drop to panga closes the laptop and Corey sighs we always get the very last ride of the season and I know once we stop going we are never going back to panga reminds him it's just for this year but he shakes his head this is exactly how traditions end once we got moving on that ride you should have heard her we are we he says the best part is right before the big drop it starts slowing down but you know what's coming Riley would lean in close to him and hold on to him he doesn't know what else will be like that to panga tells him life Corey waves her off oh besides that she laughs her first dance is hardly the end of your relationship Corey insists she said I have nothing left to

55:20then I'm like no it's not I know it wasn't Nelson it's it's it's it's a Michael or Michael giving a reading to somebody I know so clearly you like my way to that never that yeah you gotta do this you gotta definitely do it's definitely easy to boot Riley is shocked you paid for that Maya reveals free trial I took the test to see if I qualify for the free trial Riley tells her this is a scam they take anybody then right on cue Maya hits enter and Frank Man Tucci says congratulations and Maya beams I got in but Frank wasn't done you are the first person ever failed a Frankman Tucci on the computer school how do you do that how do you do that it's Riley it's got I want to listen back it must be Michael I think it has to be Michael now do do that Frank points out with shame we asked name you didn't put nothing Riley looks at the bright side at least you were smart enough not to give them your name Maya explains it's not that I'm not smart enough maybe sometimes I'm not so proud of who I am

56:21right then to pangha enters and asks the girls how it's going Riley pleads tell Maya to come back to school regular school to pangha takes a seat and asks her daughter hmm so you don't like this huh huh I'm so devastated by this what Riley says of course not Maya always comes to school with me she always picks me up at seven I look forward to it to pangha asks like a tradition and Riley agrees yes but then it clicks you know even though you're a mother that was creepy good to pangha wonders so Maya doesn't show up like she's supposed to and how does that make you feel Riley clutches her heart and pain oh de pangha encourages her honey you have to go to him he feels bad you have to go to your father to pangha would absolutely be talking quarry off a ledge and telling quarry it's his responsibility

57:21to make it right with Riley yes yeah yeah Maya jumps in I feel bad will he come to me Riley breaks it to her no he's your teacher he doesn't have to but to pangha reassures Maya but he will he doesn't have to but he will I didn't get this at all so he's gonna cross boundaries yes do something that he wouldn't do we shouldn't do as a teacher because the teacher you should just fail her yeah and let her you know just and put in because he's gonna thingy would have done this too but not in his own house not come walk up into his daughter's bedroom grab by the hand but no thingy would have explained why you failed and and would have explained that he doesn't want you to fail and showed you that you knew the answers and shows you what that you're capable of more that's ultimately what he ends up doing with Maya which you could have just done in the classroom instead of letting her walk out why did he let her walk out that first day and say okay you can go and then my daughter can also

58:27go chase after you yes so you can be upset and leave school yeah it's absurd yeah yeah yeah and right on cue the door opens and quarry makes a beeline for Maya he takes her by the hand and they walk out to penga grins always in the Matthew's kitchen quarry places Maya's F in front of her and tell her to read it I guess something that bugs me about this is Riley is being told that she has to go to her dad right she failed him to penga agrees you have to go to him your dad thinks of this like a tradition you broke his heart and so quarry is all brokenhearted but he's gonna go get Maya like drag her out of there well because it's so weird it's like he's like a better father to Maya guess then he's the whole thing to his own daughter and he's like snarky to his daughter and to penga agree I so lost the plot by the I know I have to be honest with you I just didn't

59:29I didn't get it I mean is it is it safe to say that whoever breaks someone's heart has to be the person to go and so we're saying Riley broke quarry's heart you have to go to him quarry broke Maya's heart but we do say he doesn't have to but he will he never mind I have no clue right no idea okay uh quarry places Maya's F in front of her and tells her to read it she shakes her head and gets up I don't want to do this Mr. Matthews Riley is standing nearby and tells her to sit down Maya pushes back you can't tell me what and Riley sternly cuts her off I just did she plops back down and Riley takes a seat next to her see this so then it's Riley that comes yes Maya begins to read through her paper out loud Darwin animal studies were thought to be when the travels he took on the boat with the Beatles Riley is offended are you kidding me Maya asks quarry does she have to be here quarry ignores the bickering and asks her a question what were you trying to do Maya throws her hands up I was trying to write like I was smart Riley grabs her hand you are smart quarry again asks Maya what she meant to say

1:00:33she shrugs Darwin studied animals quarry asks her what kind in my admits she doesn't know when Riley insists she does know Maya is fed up I don't know you think I don't know what I don't know Riley explains I think you know more than you don't know but you don't know that Riley asks again what did Darwin study so I'm this okay so she's not she's holding back what she does she does know the answer yes birds but this is why you can't have quarry be the teacher this is this is classroom stuff that should be taught by a teacher and then you get the juxtaposition of the family saying there's two different things you can fail at a test we're not going to fail you as your family yeah and so it gets muddled when he's both and now he's teaching her in front of the rest of the family about F she had but at the dinner table it's it's so convoluted yeah that it's just like I I truly didn't understand what was happening I was like I don't I don't know I don't get it I know

1:01:37it's like it's almost like like the dramatic beats are there right like the rhythm is there yeah good life lesson or right yes and like the things but they're almost speaking gibberish yes exactly yes it's like a word salad that you're like oh I think I I think it's gonna happen yeah and when you finish the show you're like yeah that was an important lesson yes but if you actually can become a six it's really weird and it's both my daughters even though Riley you let me down and you need to apologize to me but I let Maya down but really you should go to the dance but I'm gonna father daughter dance with Maya it's it was like I what what are you what are you doing what's the story what's the story yeah it was it was very muddled so Riley asks again what did Darwin study and this time Maya says hurts oh I know what I was asking why

1:02:37like do we know why I mean we're gonna get in this scene this moment where she talked about her father yeah and like this it starts to actually have a real story but they cut her off which I still don't understand like so is the idea that she is intentionally tanking the test because I feel like that's what they're implying in which case like or she's overthinking it I don't know like I just wanted it to be like like why not make it clear she doesn't want to do well on the test for a reason like oh so you think she she she screwed it up on purpose well she's sitting here saying I don't know I don't know okay I do know it's birds right but she does know the answer yeah I think they're trying to say that she maybe is a bad test taker she's overthinking it she's she's trying to sound smarter than she actually is when really just say the answer like if you know the answer just say birds you don't need to do the whole kind of words out of sex right because I if you go back to her original sentence which you know okay is is a joke right for a joke's purpose

1:03:37but Darwin animal studies were thought to be when the travels he took on the boat with the Beatles if you think about that from the standpoint of what we learn about it later learn about her later is that she's trying to sound very it's a loquacious yeah right and he's saying if you had just said Darwin studied animals yeah or pervade yeah yeah Darwin studied animals specifically birds his boat was called the beagle like right those aren't smart sentences but they're factually correct and you could have gotten an A with that but instead you failed and she explains well the reason I was trying to do that is because my dad has made me feel like a failure so I'm trying to be something I'm not okay but boy it takes the three of us sitting here analyzing it yeah in order to get to that point so then she's then equating her father failing her with now her her surrogate father has also failed her exactly and he literally failed her but he failed her because she got everything wrong

1:04:42right and what he's what she ends up saying is if if you also look at me even when I'm trying my hardest to actually be the opposite of a failure and you give me an F I don't have anything in this world then it's over for me okay like I need someone to believe in me because right now I have had my belief in myself shaken because the people I'm supposed to look to my parents have made me feel like a failure gotcha so Cory asks Maya you want to be smart say what you mean I understood that perfectly and you're correct Maya wonders that's all I had to say and now Cory asks what was the name of his boat Maya says the Beatles and Cory shrugs it was the beagle it's a tiny difference but an important one because if you know it Maya you don't fail she admits I want to not fail Cory continues to ask her questions what kind of birds did he study she says she doesn't know but Riley

1:05:42insists she does Maya then answers Finches and mockingbirds Riley and Cory both celebrate just as to Penga enters Cory wants to know how Riley knew she knew and she says it's because I know she listens to you Maya nods I listen to you Cory looks at her in promises then you won't fail and neither will I to Penga jumps in how about some turkey sandwiches I've got them all made made him six months ago here they are in the Tupperware this the bread won't get soggy at all they're put mayo on them like three days ago we're all good who wants some what my far the most unbelievable part of the episode oh my jokes Darwin didn't study turkeys he studied Finches and mockingbirds his boat was the beagle Cory offers extra credit and she answers Galapagos the islands he studied were the Galapagos Cory grins it to Penga because she listens to me Cory turns his attention back to Maya watch this he grabs a red pen and turns her F into an A Maya lights up you're giving me an A

1:23:26the the story I heard was that originally Disney didn't want to address Maya not having a father I'm thinking now that that's actually not what they were probably there were probably like why is Cory stepping in because it's kind of weird that's probably the note but but the the story I heard was that Disney fought this scene and didn't want to acknowledge that Maya didn't have a father but then when the episode came out they got tons of letters and tons of feedback when they started doing because you know Disney does focus groups which isn't part of the problem with Disney I think they do focus groups with all their shows and they like do it around the country and that's how they creatively run their network which I just think is horrifying but they they did focus groups and multiple focus groups and letters were saying that this episode allowed them to talk to their kids about an absentee father that this episode like the lesson that I had sort of learned was that Disney needs to be a little more edgy and let Michael and the writers of Gurmites World be more edgy

1:24:28and address more difficult things because that's actually what people want even if they don't say that in focus groups or they don't you know because Disney just wants to avoid letters is what I remember is like they want to avoid angry letters if they ever step on an issue that's a little too you anyway now I'm looking back and why haven't watched the episode I think what's weird is the father like Cory being a father figure to Maya is weird like and because he's a teacher right and it's like and so him crossing that boundary is really weird it's also his daughter's best friend so it's weird to his daughter yeah it's so muddled and it's to Will's point that if it had just if he had just been the dad the same way Alan had been the the surrogate father figure to Sean it would have been it would have been fine yes well they're trying to in a way also mimic the mr. Turner Sean relationship right but the whole point of the mr. Turner Sean relationship or at least in the beginning was oh Fini there going this is not appropriate you should not have a kid in your

1:25:30that you're crossing boundaries are doing that there were still that teacher they're saying that and then it was Turner kind of going I'm not going to leave this kid by himself they were where they're trying to just wrap it all up into Cory yeah Fini Turner Alan every man I did forget that Turner was also Sean's teacher yeah so but that was the point is that he had scenes with bill going your crop bills going your cross in the line yeah and he also wasn't a good father like he had to learn how to be a father yeah that was a whole dynamic because then once I got into the apartment yeah it was weird for both of us and we had to learn how to navigate that really there was no authority there was no sense of like all knowingness on Turner right like Turner was a character yeah his flaws and like Cory is just even his flaws are perfect yeah right like even his flaws are just the all hand all knowing hand of godfather yeah yeah you know who doesn't seem like he knows what he's doing but ultimately knows exactly what's happening well then we're in the Matthews kitchen Cory Topanga Riley and Augie are all eating breakfast and Cory tells his daughter
