2:07bet wins. Luca Donjic scored 36 and Lakers beat the Rockets after a sloppy finish in Houston. Just 29 points combined in the fourth quarter between the two teams. The Caminanski brothers recapped that win on Lockdown Lakers. I thought it was just encouraging about this game beyond the second half defense was the toughness that they showed as a group because obviously we'll talk about 36 from Luca. We're getting used to that. This was a really entertaining game in part because it was a really bizarre game. It was an often bizarre, often ugly, like haymakers being thrown, drunk game, but the consumers were not taken down merely like Red Bull and vodka. This was like four loco and yeagermeister. Everybody was drinking in this game. It was insane.

3:08One of the things that I think really helped the Lakers in a game like this that was often so fragmented and difficult for, I mean, Luca was one of the few players in this game that could find any consistent offensive rhythm at all like Jabari Smith Jr. in his own right. That's maybe about it, but the Lakers, among the other things they did better than Houston in this game, I think this is huge. They won the composure battle big time, particularly in the second half of this game. They'll go through, like there were specific points in this game where Houston, I think it really began with a third quarter flagrant file that Kevin Durant drew or was called for against Austin Reeves drew it. He drew it by standing there and Kevin Durant giving him a two hand shove right in front of a ref, just a bad decision and from that point onward because the rockets were up six

4:10at that point, the Lakers, they got it by as much as 10 at one point, but at this particular moment, they were up six and they were outscored down the course of the fourth quarter. I believe it was the remaining five minutes of the fourth quarter, 455 to be exact. The Lakers went on a 17 to 8 run, Houston turned the ball over four times and Amin Thompson got a technical foul on top of the KD flagrant. There was another sequence where Clint Capella, I believe this is in the fourth quarter, they checked a sequence to see if he was going to get called for a flagrant on a loose ball foul against Jake Lurevia. I don't think it deserved the flagrant, I'm glad they did not call it that. But Capella, the camera showed him a few times, seemed really aggravated just by them checking this at all. I think it was all just part of a sequence, like a cascading sequences that you could

5:11see Houston getting unglued during their own adversity. The Lakers dealing with a lot of adversity themselves, but just handling it a hell of a lot better. Yeah, for sure. He was part of a very strong defensive effort, but this second half performance, particularly defensively, where the Lakers gave up 23 in the third, outscoring Houston by nine in that quarter to put themselves back in the game, and then outscore the Rockets 17 to 12. You know how hard it is to Andy to score 17 points in a quarter of an NBA game and win

6:17that quarter by five. Do you realize how good you have to be defensively and how hard you have to be playing to outscore the other team by five when you score 17? It's not seventh grade basketball here. I mean, to be totally honest, the Rockets have to be looking at themselves in the locker room going, we held them to 17 points and we did not win the quarter or the game. Didn't come close to winning the quarter, but I'm saying like they're going to be looking at the exact same thing because the inverse applies to scoring 17 points, no great shakes themselves. Like, and six of those points came in like the last couple of minutes from DeAndre Aiden of all. One of them was a golden. That's a crazy thing's got. I look at this, but I don't want to get bogged down in this point because we can talk about it more for Wednesday show or whatever, but we saw what the Lakers did defensively.

7:20They pressured Kevin Durant. They just, you know, lots of different looks, a bunch of different coverages. LeBron talked about it after the game like you can't show Kevin Durant the same look more than a few times because he's a super computer, he's going to figure out and beat you. It seems like the only response the Rockets had when the ball was taken out of Durant's hands was to throw it into the fourth row. And so I say this not to undercut with the Lakers to defensively. My point is, it's another reminder that when you look at a team like, you get the Lakers have some flaws. Every team's got some flaws. No team aside. And you get past those first two teams in the West, which are pretty freaking good. That next group of contenders, they're all, they've all got their, their things. And right now the Lakers are playing better than all of them.

8:22And so they've put themselves in a great position. This is just, this was a character win on the road on a night where they shot horribly from the floor where the, the one thing you'll say, like the defense, they were playing left them open to giving up a lot of offensive rebounds in addition to their natural tendency to do it anyway. And they fought through it. Like it was just, it was a character win. This is something I actually tweeted out during the game at Cam Brothers, probably like middle or so of the fourth quarter. If the Lakers manage to pull this off, forcing all these turnovers will play a big role in offsetting how they've lost the possession battle on offensive rebounds in second chance points. And as it turns out, the Lakers managed to, when it was all said and done in the dust settled, actually winning the possession battle, 84 to 79, despite 15 offensive rebounds

9:22for Houston, 23 second chance points, but they turned Houston over 22 times. Some of that was the, the direct result of the defense that they were playing. Some of it was just getting Houston until revealing how much they miss an experienced season point guard, like, you know, Fred Band-Vleet's absence is big for this team. But as was, as was, I was in that perspective, Alfi Shengu, who is probably their best point guard. Well, I was just about to say that they, they missed him as a hub as another passer, like another pitch they could throw, moving the ball as a target inside, like there were some passes Houston made that I was like, look, I realized they don't have an established point guard that makes things difficult, like the whole season has been this patchwork hybrid of Katie, Amin Thompson, and Shengu, sort of operating like point guards and then

10:26putting back their own misses. Like that's really been, I'm not exaggerating, that's really been a lot of their offense. At the same time, there was some of these passes that I'm like, what the F people like, like, I know you don't have a point guard, but it's, it shouldn't be this complicated. And I think, I think some of it was, the Lakers put them on tilt. And as the pressure of this game ratcheted up, the Lakers just handled it better. I 100% agree with you. I mean, there's a game, I think, I got a feeling that Wednesday is going to look different. Both teams shot the ball horribly, you know, from the perimeter. I mean, I mean, Houston's not a great three point shooting team. The Lakers aren't a great three point shooting team, but the Lakers were 24%, 8 of 34, which looked great compared to the five of 26, that the rocket shot and the Lano look, Houston shoots the ball a little bit better.

Jalen Brown, who was absolutely incredible. There was a point here where I wasn't sure if it was going to be an A plus game. I think at worst it was like an A minus game and then 18 points in the fourth quarter. Jalen was incredible. He is seeing the floor first of all better than I've seen him kind of read the game in a

13:33long time. Everything is starting to come together. I mentioned this after the last podcast, after the last game in the last podcast where he's just, it seems like he's putting a lot of things together. Obviously the scoring, obviously the playmate, King, the defense, everything came together in this game. He had 41 points, he was 19 of 21 from the free throw line. So I'm calling this the half-bam, obviously BAM out of bio had 83 and shot 43 or something free throws. So this, nicely, 41 points on 21 free throw attempts. Yeah. I'm wearing this out. There's no doubt. I'm like Dennis with the the brown out on always sunny. Once he, once it sticks in my head, I'm wearing out the term half-bam. And that's what Jalen did, a half-bam in this game, but it was all Jalen. This was all just Jalen from the beginning.

14:33Coming down the floor, reading the floor, reading the play, reading the defense and doing a great job, just understanding what the game needs, and especially with Jason coming back to, to be a part of a functional offense, that the entire Celtics ball movement was fantastic in this game. The Celtics had 31 assists on 39 made baskets. It's just really excellent, and it's great to see not just 30 plus assists. Once you hit that 30 assist mark, you know you're having a great passing night. Also they shot well, but not so ridiculously well that obviously your assist numbers are going to be pumped up. They shot 48.8% overall, so 39 of 80. So you make one more shot there, you shoot 50%, which is great, but it wasn't egregiously

15:37great. 42.5%, 17 of 40 from 3, that's really good, but it wasn't egregiously good. You know what I'm saying? So it's not just that they made a bunch of buckets, when you make a bunch of buckets, you get a bunch of assists. This is the Celtics moving the ball extraordinarily well, making the right reads, making the right play. Maybe a couple of buckets, a couple of shot attempts that you say, okay, those weren't great. You know, Jalen had a couple in the fourth quarter, but he was going so good. And look, the sun's defense in that fourth quarter was doing a good job as well. And so they made it, they made it tough on the Celtics. So Jalen had to put up a couple of tough shots. Those were the only shots that I can go back off the top of my head and think, oh, yeah, those, maybe you want to get those back. There's always going to be a shot or two or three in the game that you want back if you're shooting at any level of volume. So very, really, you would take what would he take 20, 20 shots.

16:41Very, really, do you take 20 shots, do you think all 20 were great? There's the occasional one, especially when you're a star player, you're just like, okay, that was, that was a little ambitious. But Jalen and Jason and those guys can put up ambitious shots because every once in a while, those ambitious shots fall like at the end of the game, Jalen hit a big jumper in the middle of the lane. I don't know if that was ambitious, but that was tough. He hit some tough shots and that fourth quarter was a complete takeover. The fourth quarter, Jalen performance was not just 18 points man and getting to the line of bunch. It was incredible defense. He had a few rebounds. He had that one steal on Devon Booker, which I'll get to that fourth quarter defense in the next segment. He had a put back, he was Jalen, no, Jason missed a shot.

17:46It was like a miss layup and it was at a time where the Celtics were kind of struggling a little bit. And then Jalen was there for the put back. So he just did a little bit of everything, moving the ball well, like I said, you know, hearing those MVP chance, as the night went on, the MVP chance got louder and louder and louder and louder. And it's just great to see him responding in this way. And especially with Jason on the floor, I think that fourth quarter was very notable that Jason, and I'll get to more Jason in the third segment. It was very notable that Jason was standing in the corner a lot and was kind of off the ball. I don't think he's ready for a lot of that, the hardcore movement, right? I don't think he's ready for that yet, which is interesting. Again, more later. Jalen, also part of this was Jalen had it going and I think everybody understood Jalen had it going. And so this was why would you take away from any of that?

18:50So the Celtics overall, defensively in that fourth quarter, great, the ball movement was great. Everything was great. They finished. You know, it started off. But now I shouldn't say the whole fourth quarter because at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the first five, six minutes of the fourth quarter actually wasn't so great. So Devon Booker sits, Devon Booker at one point scored 24 points in a row for the sons and he sat and the Celtics were, I think, up four at that point, they quickly went up 10 and he comes back in with, you know, after sitting for just a couple of minutes. Booker comes back in and eventually they work it down. The Celtics start getting sloppy, they're missing a bunch of shots, they're turning the ball over a bunch and it started to feel a little bit like, okay, this is a problem. This is their clutch numbers, we're going to start going back and looking at their clutch

19:54numbers from this season, which haven't always been great. It was Jalen that kind of started turning things around, making some plays and a 14-2 finish to this game. Huge. Talk about finishing quarter strong. That was an incredible finish, but the way the Celtics kind of got together behind Jalen Brown, defensively stepped up, it was somebody in the comments, I think, on the short that I posted, or maybe it was somewhere else, wherever it was, I apologize, I don't forget who it was. It was starting to look like it could have been a bad loss and it ended up being a great win and you got to give Jalen all the credit in the world. You know, you go back to that San Antonio game, he got kicked out of that game, he was

20:55having a phenomenal night. This was the kind of night that he was, I think, on his way to having. He's on a stretch. He's on a stretch right now where he's feeling good, he's feeling the game, I think he's getting it at a little bit of a different level now than even before, he's just raising his game at the right time. One of them was playing, playing Denio on Paolo Ben Carroll, right? So knowing that he's the guy, they don't have Franz Wagner, which obviously is a starter, one of their bigger pieces, I guess I don't know if you say that they have a three star studded in the lineup and all that good stuff, a big three and all that, but he's certainly part of the big two between him and Paolo Ben Carroll, not having him, Paolo had to kind of go off for a little bit of a career night.

25:03That wasn't the case by no stretch of the imagination, 18 points, 10 rebounds only on three for 13 shooting, which I think probably said more about the win for the Atlanta Hawks on tonight, assuming that he had to have a similar type of game, that one, either Jamie Johnson or the cure Alexander Walker was going to have. We'll get into that a little bit later on in the next segment and talk about who the player of the game should be, because I'm really kind of curious to get you guys opinions a little bit on that player of the game thing. So I mean, we're going to pick our player of the game tonight based on what you guys think, but they had to create some sort of separation between themselves and the Orlando magic. And it had to be come in doing what has gotten them to this point so far. It's had to come from fast starts. It's had to come from relying on their defense. The space getting onto the open floor and transition, but certainly in the half-court

26:08offense, space in the floor, sharing the ball around, getting everybody involved. It not being about who to really just being about feeding the hot hand, not really about who has to be the guy with the high hand. And I think that was kind of established early. One of the things I've been noticing about this team is whenever there's a guy that tends to struggle and whenever there's a guy that they know that later on down the stretch, that they're really going to need him, and especially trying to get him confident and kind of get his shot back. When they win that jump ball or go on that get that first possession, they go ahead and feed that person. But it's not built off of high hand, it's built off of trying to create some type of confidence. If we've seen Zachary Risa shake during the times that we did him going and getting, you know, the first possession and getting a shot up before anybody else. And I think we've seen Jonathan Camingo when he first had the chance to enter the game when he finally did and a couple of other people primarily used for those guys to start

27:11rose. But they created that cushion because of their ability to rebound. You go back and look at what they did in the first quarter. Don't score it essentially or really just had better numbers all across the board against Orlando. And it started out with having to get out to a hot start and getting out in transition. Fifty, five shooting 50% from the field versus Orlando's 35, setting the tone, probably the biggest difference maker, right? Shooting the ball from three, 50% shooting the ball. I can't think of the last time I saw the Atlanta Hawks shoot the ball at the end of the firt by the time that the break it at the end of the first quarter, shooting 50% from the field and from three, 50% plus from both categories. And might I add, 86% from the free throw line, which always tends to be their killisio for me and to nature in a lot of cases.

28:14Where you, I think as impressive as that was, also holding Orlando to just 15, not 50, 15% from three. I was a little bit discouraged in the Hawks tonight down the stretch because they, it's one thing for a team to get hot and find their way back into games. And we know that the Orlando magic is more than capable of doing such things. They're not only on a win, we're on a win history coming into the game seven consecutive. I feel like with Orlando being a team that has 17 double digit comebacks, resulting in wins, which is first in the NBA, that should have been telling for the Atlanta Hawks, kind of going back to my discouragement a little bit where I feel like they kind of took their foot off the gas. The team is just hitting shots. You're still out there playing with the same energy, especially on the defensive end. Those are all things that I feel as if are not controllable because things happen, right?

29:17Teams are just eventually going to get hot, they're going to come back, they're eventually going to go on runs. It's really just a more or so about win, not as much about if. But this kind of gave me a little bit of the feel and I don't want to poop too much in their big time win because it is a huge win for the Atlanta Hawks obviously. I just certainly want to point out a couple of things that I think that they play with their food just a little bit in the fourth quarter on tonight's game where I feel like they let up off the gas a little bit, kind of put it in cruise control. And I feel like in some cases that was the same thing that we saw a few nights ago against Brooklyn and which shouldn't have been the case. But out rebounding the opposition where you still have Paulo out there granted you don't have Franz Wagner, but you know, Mo Wagner tends to get out there, but Ty's day tend to get out there. No Jonathan Isaac obviously because that ship has sailed. But you do have a good rebounding guard in Suggs and who am I missing?

30:20I'm missing another player, not necessarily Desmond Banks, more so over shooting him, finding himself way out on the perimeter, but I think to somebody else, I just can't think of at the moment, but oh, Window Carter, Jr., who's a fine rebounder himself. For the Atlanta Hawks to be able to out rebound the way that they did, not just from a 16-10 standpoint, what sets the tone in the first quarter, but getting out and out rebounding them on the offensive end. I think that has been the tell all. We can sit back and I'm kind of curious to know from you guys, please feel free to jump into the comments because I definitely want to get you guys involved into the program a little bit and kind of curious to know how you guys see what has probably been the most impressive thing, the thing that's been the most eye popping, the thing that all the signs and the fingers may not be pointing to for everybody else, but is certainly pointing to for you to say, you know what, this is the reason that the Atlanta Hawks is winning these games. Yes, the rebounding, I mean, yes, the pace and the defense.

31:22I think that that's a huge part of it, but to become even more specific, the offensive rebound, the second chance points that Atlanta, and I think the number one in the league since the All Star break at these things, them being able to do those, to do that little piece for the team, creating second chance points on the offensive side of the ball for rebounding, I think is something that is, I don't know if I go as far as going and saying I'm precedent it, but something that I think it has been impressive and is one of the biggest determining factors and coming denominators behind why we see the team go for 10 straight. And listen, Jonathan Caminga, getting him back in the lineup, I would like to see that a little bit more consistently, but pretty confident that they know what they're doing, they're winning games with the way that they're doing this with the rotation. So some games he's playing, sometimes he's not, I think he'll be a little bit more consistent than seven points two for seven from the field and eight rebounds, fine job rebounding the ball tonight, by the way, he's not going to have on average since he's been a hard

32:22playing five game, so far I have just 17 points again. That's not going to be him every single night. There's going to be some moments where inevitably coincidentally, ironically, that he's going to appear to be only, maybe only appear to be that same guy that we saw when he was in Golden State, same way that he gave flashes of the flashes that he showed when he was also in Golden State. I thought it was very indicative that the team needed to make sure that there were no late closeouts on Desmond Bayon tonight. I think they did it. I would give them a solid A, certainly a B plus on making sure that they're closing out on Desmond Bayon being present more than anything, not running out on, running out at him or anything like that. But the floor spacing is where I give this team the A on tonight, finding a way to execute on ISO possessions, getting to the basket, playing with high energy, feeding the guys the ball. No egos, no this, that just naturally good basketball, the way that it was designed

33:28to be played going on way back December 21st, 1891, Springfield, Massachusetts, Dr. James Nase. I mean, just sharing the ball amongst one another, the definition of what a real team looks like. What a bunch of all stars on the team in big threes and big fours and big fives and everything else on the team. And of course, they're going to go out there and smoke guys is probably not going to surprise anybody that they get on a 10 game win streak, but the way, not just what they've done, but the way that the Atlanta Hawks have done it in the short time span that they've turned everything around when everybody thought that the sky may have been falling when there was no more tray young because I think in most people's opinion, when there wasn't tray young on the floor, not to take anything away from them, but when there wasn't tray young on the floor in many cases, I think it doesn't surprise anybody sometimes that the team appeared to have been playing better. Again, not to say that he's not a great player, not to say that, you know, they weren't really good with them, not to say he wasn't the one that led them to the east, none of that.

34:29But when there were moments when you didn't have him on the floor, the team would win games and they would look better and feel better doing it when Dijon, Tim Murray, when the kill Alexander was, you name it, you know what I mean, those are just little things that I tend to see how this team is beginning to grow, develop and establish the camaraderie in the chemistry amongst one another. And obviously the Orlando Magic put themselves in position where they had to play desperation basketball in a lot of cases.
