Gary Patterson is not merely USC’s new defensive coordinator. His arrival may remove Lincoln Riley’s last credible excuse for why the Trojans have not developed into a complete championship program.

USC is coming off a 9–4 season and a 7–2 record in Big Ten play. The Trojans have an experienced quarterback in Jayden Maiava, explosive offensive talent, greater roster depth, returning experience along the offensive line and another talented recruiting class. The question is no longer whether USC has enough offensive talent. It is whether Patterson can repair the championship details that have repeatedly failed the Trojans:

Open-field tackling
Situational discipline
Fourth-quarter defense
Road-game preparation
Special teams and field position

USC does not need a top-five defense to threaten Oregon, Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten. A top-25 or top-30 unit could turn a few critical third-down stops, forced field goals and fourth-quarter possessions into the difference between another 9–4 season and a 10–2 College Football Playoff résumé.

But if USC continues to lose because it cannot stop the run, tackle consistently or finish important games, the defensive coordinator can no longer receive all the blame. The Trojans would have to ask whether Lincoln Riley is building a championship program—or simply another dangerous offense.
