About this episode
In Part 3 of my Liberty vs. Safety series, I stop talking about the problem and start talking about solutions.
For decades, lawmakers have known surveillance powers could be abused. The Church Committee warned about it. Congress reacted to it. Then over time, many leaders stopped treating liberty as something that needed protecting and started treating it like an inconvenience.
I explain why I believe states must remove themselves from complicity with federal surveillance systems, what kind of legislation I would introduce in Colorado, and why the normal political strategy for passing legislation no longer works.
We can keep doing what we’ve always done.
Or we can do something different.
