Leicester Hospice Reopens Beds with NHS Funding

Laura's hospice is reopening six beds on its inpatient ward on a permanent basis. This comes after they got an extra 1,200,000 pounds from the NHS. Last summer, they had to cut beds from 31 down to 18 because of rising costs and a budget deficit. Earlier last year in July, the hospice faced a 2,000,000 pound shortfall. They reduced services like day therapy to save money. Factors included higher running costs, less income, and more demand from an aging population. Leaders at the hospice are thrilled. Dr. Luke Feathers, the medical director, called it a strong vote of confidence in their end of life care. He thanked the community for donations that helped reopen four beds temporarily back in November. The new funding comes from the NHS Integrated Care Board for Leicester, Leicester Shire, and Rutland. It will support the beds and expand community-based palliative care.
