King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in the United States after their trip was almost derailed by an alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The U.S. President today formally welcoming the royals alongside wife Melania Trump. Our correspondent, Marley Hogan, reports from Washington. Well, Donald Trump has often made it clear that he admires the British royal family and today he warmly welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House. The President and First Lady coming out onto the porch on the South lawn to greet the King and Queen. They shook hands, exchanged pleasantries and then went back inside the White House to have a cup of tea and a private conversation. Later, the royal couple toured the gardens, focusing on a recently added beehive that is a replica of the White House. And everybody that goes on tomorrow goes on tomorrow with one of his little guys, the one in the order of you guys. The King and Queen finished their day with a garden party at the British Embassy.

This is Charles's first visit to the United States as King and it certainly comes at a delicate time relations between the U.S. and the U.K. are strained. Trump has been very vocal about his frustration with the U.K. Prime Minister and his refusal to join his war with Iran. But although this trip was planned months before that conflict began and the official purpose is to mark 250 years since America declared independence, there is certainly hope from government officials in the U.K. that this royal visit may help smooth over some of those tensions. It is a high stakes moment for the King who will address a joint session of Congress tomorrow and then later attend a formal state dinner as he tries to remind the United States of its special relationship with the U.K.
