Kimmels face sacking calls over widow joke

About this episode

Jimmy Kimmel made a controversial joke during a sketch about First Lady Melania Trump having "a glow like an expectant widow" whilst pretending to speak at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The joke, which aired days before a foiled assassination attempt on President Trump, has drawn condemnation from both the President and First Lady, with Melania Trump explicitly calling for Kimmel's termination. The controversy presents a significant challenge for ABC Network's new CEO Josh DiMaro, who must navigate calls from the White House to fire the talk show host.

0:00President Donald Trump and the First Lady are speaking out against talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. We spoke about it briefly at the top of the show. What more you got? Yeah, well look, this is an interesting story. We kind of went through this last year. You might recall when Kimmel did a joke about Charlie Kirk and then he was taken off there on a whole bunch of stations across the country that it was resumed again. I think probably I'll show you the gag first, so that way you know what we're talking about. So this was last Thursday night and he was doing a sketch in which he was pretending to be speaking at the White House corresponded sinner. Of course, he wasn't, but this is exactly as it went to air. Our First Lady Melania is here. Look at more. So beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow. So a glow, which obviously means you are excited and happy about what's about to happen and expect a widow. So in effect, he is doing jokes about an assassination and of course President Trump has had those attempts in the past. So of course 48 hours later, there is an attempt

1:04thankfully foiled. So suddenly now the blowback is starting because what it does really highlight, of course, Kimmel didn't know that was going to happen and there's no reason to even suggest he was trying to incite it, but it does show you the level of discourse. We're suddenly now making jokes about assassination. It's just sort of considered to be perfectly okay. Now all the usual suspects, including the President himself have come forward and condemned it and demanded that Kimmel be fired, but I thought the most interesting statement came from the First Lady herself. You might expect because of who she is that she might have kind of been diplomatic, maybe not being too explicit in what she was thinking, but you can see there she is not holding back at all. She thinks he should be fired. Now this is going to be a real test for the new CEO at the ABC Network and also Disney, a man called Josh Demaro. He's only been in the job about six weeks, doesn't come from a media background, comes from a theme park background. So he's going to get

2:04a real test now of trying to navigate these rough waters when you have the First Lady and the President calling for him to fire Kimmel. Who is about, as we speak, about to start taping tonight's show where obviously it's going to have to be addressed. Yeah, okay, we'll keep an eye on that.
