Jes Staley And The Transcripts From His Epstein Related Trip To Congress (Part 9) (9/3/26)

About this episode

The transcripts from Jes Staley’s July 24, 2026 interview with the House Oversight Committee revealed just how deep and personal his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein became, while also exposing contradictions in the way Staley had described that relationship publicly. Staley acknowledged visiting Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse dozens of times, traveling to Little St. James on multiple occasions and exchanging roughly 1,200 communications with Epstein between 2008 and 2012. He admitted that he had shared confidential and potentially market-sensitive JPMorgan information with Epstein, including details about the bank’s business, client relationships, pending transactions and even communications involving the Federal Reserve during the 2008 financial crisis. Staley also told investigators that he had discussed his own compensation with Epstein and sought his advice, despite previously portraying Epstein as having little or no connection to his professional life after the 2008 conviction. He further acknowledged having a sexual encounter with one of Epstein’s assistants after meeting her through Epstein, while insisting that Epstein did not arrange it and that he had no knowledge that the woman had later accused Epstein of abuse.

The committee also pressed Staley on some of the strangest and most troubling material in his correspondence with Epstein, including the notorious “Snow White” emails and other references to Disney characters. Staley denied having sex with a woman dressed as Snow White and said he could not explain the meaning of some of the messages, even when investigators confronted him with contemporaneous emails and photographs. He maintained that he did not know Epstein was continuing to abuse girls after his 2008 conviction, calling that revelation “incredible,” yet the transcripts also showed that Staley personally argued for JPMorgan to keep Epstein as a client even as internal concerns about Epstein’s cash withdrawals and potential trafficking activity were mounting. Staley also said he had spoken with Jamie Dimon about Epstein, something Dimon and JPMorgan have disputed. Taken together, the testimony painted a picture of a relationship that was far closer, more intertwined with Staley’s professional life and more difficult to reconcile with his earlier descriptions than he had previously acknowledged.

What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the Epstein Chronicles. In this episode we're going to dive right back into the just daily transcript from his trip to Congress. Question, did you ever ask Mr. Epstein about the cash withdrawals? Answer, I know someone, either I did or Mary did. And he said that they, he told her or he told me that they were too, or he told his banker, that they were to fuel his airplane. Question, did you ask why he would need cash for airplane fuel? Answer, I don't think I did. I think the question, I think the question was discussed, and I think the view was particularly if you're flying overseas or whatnot that oftentimes you would pay cash for fuel as opposed to another source. Question, what steps were taken to investigate that defense? Answer, I don't know. Again, I was not part of the team that was that was looking into that. Question you mentioned, this made it up to the general counsel Stephen Cutler, did you discuss the matter with Stephen Cutler?

Answer at one point in time yes, I think as Epstein's problems built, he hired some very recognized lawyers and I recall that I suggested Steve meet with him. Question, why did you suggest that? Answer, so the bank would make an informed decision as to whether to keep Epstein or not as a client. Question in October of 2011, Stephen Cutler complained to you and others that Epstein was not an honorable person in any way, and he should not be a client. How did you respond? Answer again, I let the bank do what the bank felt was proper. Question, did you say anything at that moment in response to him though? Answer, I think that's when he had people like Ken Star represent him and just suggested that Steve meet with Ken Star. But it was Steve Cutler's decision to close him as a client or not. If Steve Cutler wanted to do it, he could have done it. Question, there is reporting that you asked Mr. Cutler to sit down with Mr. Epstein and hear him out, is that correct? Answer yes, or here as lawyers out, I forget what it was. It was either meet with Epstein, I think I did meet with

Epstein, and I don't know whether Steve met with him or was with his lawyers. Question, why did you advocate for Mr. Cutler to take his time to meet with Mr. Epstein? Answer, Steve was running legal and compliance in the bank, and these were serious allegations, and the bank was going to exit Epstein more than it already had. Seem like Steve, seem like the thing to do was have Steve meet with Epstein himself. Question, did you not feel as though Mr. Epstein as a registered sex offender and someone who pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution for minors was a great risk to the bank and should be removed as a client? Answer well again, the bank cut off the principal activities that it had with Epstein. The question is whether you would choose to close his checking account or not. Question, did anyone else at the bank take steps to defend Mr. Epstein? Answer, I don't think I took steps to defend Epstein, but I think his banking team defended him. And I think what's telling is when Epstein moved his account ultimately out of Morgan, he followed his banking team to Deutsche Bank.

Question, was Mr. Cutler going to remove Mr. Epstein as a client before you asked him to sit down with Mr. Epstein? Answer, I don't know. Question, reporting indicates that Justin Nelson wrote a memo, trumpeting Epstein's large volume of business with JP Morgan, and noting that despite his status as a sex offender, he was still clearly well respected and trusted by some of the richest people in the world. Did you ever see this memo? Answer, I know Justin Nelson. I don't know if I saw that specific memo. Question, did you ever speak with Mr. Nelson about Mr. Epstein's status as a client? Answer, I recommended that Justin Nelson be the banker for Jeffery Epstein at one point, but I think that was it. Question was Justin Nelson, also your banker? Answer, he became the banker to my wife's family, not me. Question, are you aware of whether Mr. Epstein asked Mr. Nelson to write this memo? Answer, no. Question, by Mr. Hammer, we've had another member join. Can she please announce herself for the record? Congresswoman Luna, Mr. Hammer, Mr. Luna, we understand,

you have some questions. Ms. Luna, I do, thank you. Thank you for being here today. I wanted to see, have you ever made a settlement payment to redacted, stale no? Question, okay, at your position at JP Morgan, you had referenced US intelligence agencies. Can you elaborate further on your interactions with various agencies? And if so, which agencies were those? Stale can you say that again? Luna, you had made a reference to having contact with US intelligence agencies for your work at JP Morgan. Stale, yeah, Luna, can you specify as to the agencies, as well as what the nature of that work may have been? Stale, I believe it was the State Department and the CIA. Luna, okay, can you elaborate further on what they were having you do? Stale, yeah, this was after 9-11 and the Bin Laden family had its international banking accounts with JP Morgan and the State Department and Morgan, and I agreed that I should fly to Saudi Arabia to meet with a Bin Laden family and tell them that

the State Department and Morgan recognized that Osama Bin Laden was rogue and had been expelled by the family, then the family's business with Morgan would be preserved. Luna, where does the CIA fit into the conversation? Stale, huh? Luna, where does the CIA fit into those conversations? Stale, my recollection is the CIA came to meet me in my office. Luna, with the State Department, answer, I'm not sure whether it was the same time, or together? Luna, do you remember who at the State Department or who at the CIA came to meet you? Stale, no, Luna, okay, following up on that, were you aware that Jeffrey Epstein had an alias? Stale had a what? Luna and alias? Stale, no, I was not. Luna, okay, he had an alias that was listed with a Saudi Arabian address, following that interaction that you had with the Bin Laden family. Did Jeffrey Epstein ask to meet with you again? Stale, with respect to the Bin Laden family? Luna, or closely thereafter? Stale, I don't know about the timing,

but I don't think he met with me with respect to the Bin Laden family. Luna, did he ever ask you about your travels to that area or interactions with the family? Stale, he was close to a member, a member of the royal family, in Dubai. Luna, who was? Stale, he ran Dubai ports. Luna, who was close to a member? Stale, Epstein, Luna, okay, Stale, and I met with the Sheikh who ran the ports of Dubai. That was the only really, and then he had connections in Israel, and I met senior officials in Israel that Epstein knew. Luna, who did you meet? Stale, I met Ehud Burak, and I met Prime Minister Netanyahu. Luna, those were my questions. Miss Tollin jumps in. Question, and then I just have a quick follow-up for something we were discussing earlier. You mentioned that you were not part of the rapid response teams or any of the teams overseeing Mr Epstein's accounts. We were talking about you being informed of his making, the suspicious cash withdrawals.

Were you, why were you informed of that? Answer again, I think it was very suspicious, and generally the bank would report cash withdrawals like that to the federal government, and you know, it's just something that generally the bank would not allow. Question, but you said you were informed about it. And then had a discussion with Mr Epstein, is that correct? Answer, as I said, I think I, or Mary Ardose, said the bank raised the issue about cash, and there was a problem. Question, so who would have been informed or informed you about the withdrawals? Answer, I don't recall exactly who was informing. Miss Brinyak, question, when did you begin working at Barclays? Answer in December of 2015? Question, what was your position? Answer, CEO? Question, what is Barclays? Answer, it's a major international bank headquartered in London. Question, did you ever ask Mr Epstein to assist you in getting the position at Barclays? Answer, never. Question, it's been reported that Mr Epstein enlisted a London power broker,

the plant seeds, about you with senior bank officials, back in 2012. Did you interview for the position in 2012? Answer, yeah. Question, and did it go to someone else? Answer, yes. Question, so the rest of the reporting is correct. Did Mr Epstein enlist a London power broker to plant seeds about you? Answer, I don't know. And I would not have wanted somebody to lobby on my behalf. Question, you never asked him to speak with? Get's cut off by Staley, never. Question, in 2015, did Barclays ask that you change anything about your relationship with Mr Epstein? Answer, no. I took the decision when I became CEO of Barclays that I'd cut all contact with Jeffrey Epstein. Question, did you in fact cut all contact with Mr Epstein in 2015? Answer, I had no contact post 2015 with Jeffrey Epstein direct contact. Brinyac, I'll now enter as majority exhibit eight into the record. The document is based stamped with EFTA 0105 5036. It's an email exchange between your daughter,

redacted, and Mr Epstein from February 6, 2017. Miss Brinyac will go off record. Now they come back. Question, do you recognize these emails? Mr Staley? Answer, yes. Question, can you describe what's happening in the thread? Answer, again, I think it's Jeffrey Epstein, unfortunately, trying to contact me through my daughter. Question, were you aware that Mr Epstein was contacting your daughter in 2017? Answer, my understanding is it happened twice. I was not aware, I don't believe there was contact before the exchange. Question, why would Mr Epstein reach out to redacted regarding a former JP Morgan employee? Varanique, while? Answer, again, many years before he was helpful in her pursuit of physics, so they knew each other. And it seems like he approached her with respect to Varanique, while? Question, did your daughter come to you and ask you the question? Answer, that's what the email says. Question, and did you know what was coming from Mr Epstein? Answer,

I believe so. Questions, Mr Staley. Can we agree your communication through your daughter to Mr Epstein? We're in violation of the agreement you made with Barclays to cut off communication with Mr Epstein after 2015, correct? Answer, there was not an agreement, what I told Barclays, was that I had not had physical contact with Epstein for a while, which was true. And I cut off contact directly with Epstein, upon taking the CEO role at Barclays, which is also true. Question, and then you began communicating to Mr Epstein through your daughter redacted. Answer, no, I did not start communicating with Epstein through my daughter. Question, you testified you were aware, the message from your daughter, you testified earlier, that you were aware that your daughter's message came from Mr Epstein. And it reflects in the documents that you gave redacted that information. So you did not cut off contact with Mr Epstein following 2015, correct? Answer, your first thing is that I was trying to contact Epstein through my daughter. I wasn't trying to contact Epstein through

my daughter. Ms Luna, I'm back for more questions. Do you know who redacted is? Have you heard that name? Staley, now I have Luna, okay? So she read the email. Snow White was fucked twice as soon as she put on her costume. Would you say that would be a predatory statement to make about this image? Staley, what's your question? Luna, would you say that that statement is predatory statement to make about this image? Staley, I don't think it's a predatory statement. Luna, you don't think it's predatory? Staley, no, I think someone's assaulting a woman is predatory, yes. Luna, the question was, do you think that that's a predatory statement to make about the image? Staley, I don't know who that person is. Luna, I'm not asking if you know the person is. I'm asking if you think that the statement is predatory to make about this image. Staley, if that's what, if that's the image, the person is referring to, Luna, referring to, yes, Staley then yes, that would be a predatory statement.

Luna, okay, going back to the email correspondence, it appears that Jeffrey Epstein is asking you which character would you like next. Do you know what he's referencing? Answer, I don't. Luna, okay? It says that you're responding to him, Beauty and the Beast. Can you refer in Beauty and the Beast? Are you talking about Belle? Staley, I'm just mentioning Beauty and the Beast. Luna, sir, I wouldn't laugh at this. Staley, I'm not. Luna, it's very disturbing to read these emails, so I just the reason I'm asking you is because to me, reading this, it looks like there's trafficking happening. And what I would say is this girl looks, she's maybe about 13 or 14 years old. So if this was written about someone like her child, I don't think that you would be laughing right now. And so the point is that we have you here. Can you give us information and or names for people that you may know who have harmed these kids? Staley, no, I don't know anyone. Sullivan, Congressperson, I have an objection. Luna, it's Congresswoman. Sullivan, Congresswoman, thank you.

But to say from the picture to get the age, as 13 years old strikes me as, Luna jumps in, I've seen some of the unredacted photos. And these, well, they're children. Sullivan, that's your view, but I'd like to see them. Luna, while you can, I'm sure you'll get the opportunity if this becomes criminal. Sullivan, thank you. Brynjak, we have some pressing follow-ups. We'll go off the record and we'll come back on later to ask those. All right, folks, we're going to wrap up right here and in the next episode dealing with the topic, we're going to pick up where we left off.
