We do have the lead coming up in just about 15 minutes and now that football is back and swing. We've had plenty, plenty of news today. The Brock Bauer stuff has significant fantasy football implications. Obviously, we're getting you ready for Patriots Seahawks. I do want to get to a Jeff Phelps take, which I say as often as I possibly can. But you were right to point out the varying degrees of conversations we're having on Sam Darnold ahead of this game. One, two years removed from the resurgence in Minnesota and certainly roughly eight months
removed, seven months removed from Sam Darnold completely resurrecting his career with Superbowl win. Well, so now he's put together back-to-back great seasons essentially, right? And so I guess the question that would follow up, even though he did win the Superbowl, how many years in a row does he have to do this? I feel like if this is this year, is this the one? If he wins, double digit games and has an unquestioned great season, will people finally admit that he's good at this thing? I don't know because I'm torn because I think I've seen plenty of quarterback rankings that have him in the anywhere from 12 to seven range, right? But I think what's interesting is when Sam Darnold was drafted, everyone thought he was going to be Josh Allen, meaning- Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Really good with inning-based judges New table 24-year-and Rat bastanteяв, meaning that they were actually at the top 10 for the second世界-based match of the year like the second one. Yeah. Yeah. So we know that sometimes they get really pretty fast defensive votes from executives in coaches that we talked to him about yesterday.
And I thought it was really interesting that Sam Darnold I think was seventh or eighth on that list. Actually, now as a little bit low, as like tw twenty. And I thought to myself, if there's a guy that could jump into the top five with another even just a Superbowl run who are even like NFC title game, I think it's Darnold because he has the pedigree people looked for to kind of make those leaps. Yeah. Is this going to be the year then he has to do it this year before then people will actually acknowledge how good he is at this whole thing It feels like he kind of gets bypassed in all of this and all the conversations We talk about great quarterbacks or at least good quarterbacks Sam Darnell doesn't get brought up the same way and I it's amazing. You just won the Super Bowl Mm-hmm, and is he going to be hoisting the Lombardi trophy next year and people will still be like I think Quarterback acts is still better. I don't think it's possible if he has another year like last year Whether they win the Super Bowl or not, but certainly I mean if they win the Super Bowl He's gonna have to sling shot into the top There is a thought process that exists that we should see the best Sam Darnell we've ever seen I would imagine this year think about the the weight of the world that has just been taken off his shoulders and with after what happened last year I mean there is there was question marks about whether or not it was just Justin Jefferson and Kevin O'Connell and then he came to
To Seattle and he answered all those and then one like no one can ever call him a bust anymore You win the Super Bowl that that part of the equation just gets taken immediately out So I I'm expecting the best version of Sam Darnell we've ever seen he's playing with no pressure essentially It'll also I here's another way that'll tell How Sam Darnell is really thought of and that is how Seattle pays him so much the reaction to Baker Mayfield getting that that contract yesterday Was he reset the middle class in the NFL? So where Daniel Jones was at 44 million and in Sam Darnell to like 35 million Baker getting 55 All right, that's the kind of the benchmark if you're a middle of the road quarter Max you think Sam Darnell is better than Baker Mayfield I think with another good year I don't think there's a reason he shouldn't be making Pat Maholmes kind of contract right? I think you just won the Super Bowl I think I think it's silly to even ask if he's better than Baker Mayfield But I know there's enough people listening their car right now that answer that question inside Baker Mayfield's better and the idea that it's I mean I still take Baker over him because I think Baker's just that dude I think that's that's kind of what I'm getting at though is that that concept right there that more people than not
I believe would take Baker Mayfield and it's like the guy just hoisted the one party He just he just won the Super Bowl while dominating the playoffs to get there and if she title game was incredible What he did against the Rams in that game so what I think is is gonna Maybe hold him back a little bit is they didn't need a great Sam Darnell performance to win the Super Bowl So that doesn't help but I needed in the un if she title game a while but they both both teams scored in the 30s That game was that game was dependent on Sam Darnell being Dynamic even think back to the Minnesota playoff game where people were saying oh here's oh he's seen ghosts again He for some reason Two great seasons as great as they are he's not Was both games in the Minnesota in the mode of Minnesota season it was the end of the season game to then not give them the buy and then it was the playoff game But obviously I thought things changed with Seattle and the other caveat that goes against him and this is this is part of that Is he great conversation or not ginger? Not that I think people buy Michael and we have one of the show now we gotta be kinder No, we appreciate you but the gingers are underrated nationally
I think everybody knows that when you have Justin Jefferson as a wide receiver and then you have JSN as a wide receiver I think people question can you only do this if you have a great wide receiver and if I was Sam Darnell I would say well good. I'm gonna sign a deal with Seattle and JSN isn't going anywhere anyway Yeah, I I listen I think you're making a great point here. I really do because I I am endlessly fascinated how We're coming off if we look at the top five guys who've been the top five guys now for four or five seasons Lamar had a massively disappointing year last year and his head coach got fired eight and 19 right Pat my homes was looked bad statistically and also got hurt last year boro hasn't want to play off game in three years Lamar it was top five in every To be reckoning time. Josh Allen's was like the worst I saw was three Josh Allen is unequivocally considered the best going right now Coming off a season where I should make the argument that he was never more less impressive. He was never I mean Two years ago when he won a wikim vp that was impressive last year and what he did
That was it was a dominant run game That wasn't Josh Allen that was awesome in that and necessarily in that and and he gets all the credit Meanwhile we watched him vomit all over his shoes in a playoff game against Denver We had five turnovers and one of the worst interceptions I've ever seen in my life right before the half all you to do was sweep walk In the second half of that game and he makes it up against the page reads in the aft title game But I think this goes back to the idea of perceptions of what a top five quarterback makes It's the hardest list to crack once you get in you have banned with I mean Joe burrow had been in the playoffs in three years Joe burrow has had health issues He's still unanimously seen as a top five quarterback Pat my homes has Statistically not been a good quarterback for three years and they're the the chiefs are coming off being a top 10 pick this last year Still unanimously a top five pick. I mean even Stafford look at what Stafford's had to do just to go from like five to two and it happened Well staying Stafford one week MVP last year and if he's had a game last year and but again it took that after already winning a Super Bowl
Yeah, with the Rams he had a beef up the individual stuff and so there's an element of like how long It maybe that's the litmus test here, right? How long did it take before Matt Stafford was a guy Benefitting from finally being surrounded with the right amount of talent in LA to people actually giving him the credit for winning In spite of the head coach in spite of the great defense are great players around it Well when in the case of Sam Darnal it seems like it's been two years of great football now and he's not getting anywhere near that the accolade yet And I just is this season going to be the season that tips him into that top five conversation where he can then hang out for a little bit With apologies to Jeff Phelps will have to get to that later in the show is Sam Darnal great now the lead in five minutes on 92-3 the fan
