在許多海洋生物大量減少的情況下，水母逆勢上漲，主要原因是人類過度捕撈海洋生物，使得天敵減少，再加上環境污染和海水溫度上升，造成海洋「富養化」的現象，富養化的海洋使得水母能在短時間內大量繁殖。
