If you're pregnant or newly postpartum and already wondering how to not lose yourself in motherhood, first of all, I see you, I was you. Second, the fact that you're even thinking about this tells me something super important. You care. You care about your baby and you care about staying connected to yourself and that is not selfish. It's wise. But here's the fear underneath it, right? Everyone keeps telling you, you'll never be the same, say goodbye to your old life. It's all about the kids now and quietly you're wondering, if I don't lose myself, am I even doing this right? So let's talk about it. Welcome to Not To Find My Motherhood. I'm Melanie and around here we go from overwhelmed to aligned. I help mom's untangle my chaos, challenge the impossible expectations and build systems that actually work for your life. Not for one society keeps shoving down your throat. This is your space to question the rules, ditch the guilt and rediscover the person buried underneath mom. So let's get into it. The motherhood identity shift is real.

Your body changes, your schedule changes, your sleep changes, your relationships shift, your nervous system is on high alert. Of course, something feels different. But losing yourself in motherhood rarely happens because you love your child, quote unquote, too much. It happens because your identity expands overnight. Your nervous system is under a constant stress. Society hands you impossible expectations, simply impossible. No one teaches you how to integrate your old self with your new role. And when that expansion isn't supported, it can feel like erasure. But expansion and erasure are not the same thing. Let me ask you something gently as I hold your hand. Who told you that motherhood required disappearance? Does that message didn't come from nowhere? You will be handed opinions about everything. Press speed, formula, sleep train, go sleep, stay at home, work, or getics next, goldfish.

If you try to satisfy all of it, you will absolutely exhaust yourself before you even find your footing. And here's the deeper layer. We're shown that the good mom sacrifices everything. She's exhausted. She's last on her list. She rarely talks about herself. She has no hobby. She doesn't complain. And if you don't look like that, are you selfish? That's the quiet fear. Now let me ask you a deeper question. If you are identity stayed intact, would you feel guilty? Because sometimes the anxiety about losing yourself isn't just fear. It's pressure to conform. Motherhood is one long fricking stream of decisions, feeding, sleeping, schedules, doctor's appointments. What's safe? What's normal? What's developmentally appropriate? And if you take all of that on a loan, your brain will simply burn out. Decision fatigue isn't dramatic. It's very subtle. It's when you stop choosing for yourself because you're too mentally exhausted. Let me say that again. It is when you stop choosing for yourself because you're too mentally exhausted.

That's when hobbies fade. Friendships get postponed. Conversations feel like effort. Not because you don't care, but because your system is completely overloaded. So here's a lighter question for you. When was the last time you made a decision that was just for you? If that feels hard to answer, that's not a flaw. That's a signal. Quick pause. If this episode feels like it's answering a fear you've been carrying quietly, the align audio reset is a simple place to start grounding yourself. It helps you clear mental noise, reconnect with your values, and stop absorbing expectations that aren't yours. It's five minutes. It's linked below. Okay. Let's give back to it. Sleep deprivation, constant vigilance, noise, touch, emotional responsibility. Your nervous system is working over time. When your body is in survival mode, identity exploration shuts down. Creativity quiets, pleasure decreases, curiosity fades, not permanently, temporarily. This is not you disappearing though.

This is your system prioritizing survival. So if you want to not lose yourself in motherhood, protecting your nervous system is essential. And that might look like five minutes outside alone, a small daily joy ritual, a therapist check in, a weekly friend call breathing before reacting. These are not luxuries. They are regulation tools. And when your nervous system is calmer, you can actually feel like yourself again. Let's ground this. Mindset first. I know. I know. You are still a whole person. Motherhood adds to you. It does not erase you. You are allowed to miss parts of your old life, want adult conversation, protect time for yourself, have boundaries. You are not just a mom. You are a mother and a full human being. Those identities coexist. Second, alignment over productivity. Before kids, productivity may have defined yourself worth after kids. That metric will absolutely destroy you. Instead of asking, did I do enough, ask, did I live in alignment with what matters most

to me today? Alignment might look like resting instead of cleaning, saying no, ordering takeout, protecting sleep, alignment keeps you connected to yourself, productivity, obsession, disconnects you. If you're worried about losing yourself in motherhood, I want you to start here. Pre-decide what matters. Use three family values, three non-negotiables for your well-being, three things you're willing to let go of, and keep one thing that's just yours, one hobby, one ritual, one space untouched by diapers and snack requests. You don't need hours, you need consistency, protect it like you would a pediatrician appointment because this is preventative care for you. You do not have to disappear to be a good mom. You can love your child deeply and still want space. You can adore motherhood and still protect your identity. You can worry about losing yourself and prevent it at the same time. Motherhood is expansion and expansion feels really uncomfortable sometimes, a lot of times,

but uncomfortable does not equal loss. You deserve to recognize yourself in the mirror and you can. Don't forget to grab your free Align Audio Reset. It's five minutes to calm the chaos, reset your mind, and reconnect with who you are beyond motherhood. We'll find it linked in the description of this podcast.
