Afternoon Drive on The Fan — How motivated will Deshaun Watson be on Sunday?. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
This is Brown's head coach Todd Munkin and you're listening to the number one sports station in Cleveland. 92-3, the fan. Quick hits coming up in just about 20 minutes time. Nick and JP back with you. We do have Ashley Basta coming up at 3-20 today. Getting ready for week one, Brown's in checks, but it is prediction season. And I'm merely making a point. I'm not taking a shot at the Yahoo Sports folks. And they've got it looks to be 10 analysts and all of them are predicting the Baltimore Ravens to win the AFC North. Okay. Wow. Clean sweep. I did not see a clean sweep coming. Neither did I. I think there's a lot more intrigue in this. And I think there's a little too much emphasis on the fact that Baltimore has, I accidentally sorry, I don't think people are emphasizing enough how when head coach has changed that is a uncontrollable variable that can be positive. It can also be negative. It's boiler alert. I really thought it was going to be more people saying bangles than Ravens.
I was going to take the Ravens just because I thought I got a belief. I don't think that Harbaugh, the drop off from Harbaugh is going to be that apparent. And I don't know that Joe Burrow is ever going to really get his together in Cincinnati now at this point. Only thing about Baltimore is that roster is getting a bit older. But I don't know where this is also coming from. As nine of the 10 analysts also have the Cowboys. Yeah, people love the Cowboys right now. They really do. They like what shot and hymer's built up. They think that offense is going to be one of the best in the NFL. If not the best in the NFL, it's always been one of the best in the NFL with that. That's never been a very good. It was very good last year too. But I think there, I think the, there's a couple additions they made defensively, not only on the D line, but also Caleb Downs and Alan Press if he's been as well. We know him very well with Ohio State. I think there's been actual strides defensively that the Cowboys can way claim to. But yeah, a lot of people are high on America's team right now. Two of them have the Cowboys and Texans in the Super Bowl. And it's split. Listen, I think the multiple Cowboys Texans Super Bowl. Yeah. Yeah, Matt Harman, who I think is a Cowboys guy, by the way, and Nate Tyson.
So like football guys, like I really like, I think both of them know what the hell they're talking about. I mean, you find a reason for how we'd end up there. It's not, it's not the craziest thing I've ever heard of. It's a lot of belief in CJ Stroud one. And then on the Cowboys side, it's just a lot of belief that defensively they're going to have this thing together in a way that they just haven't in the deck era. And then everyone else has the Rams winning the Super Bowl. It just matters who they beat in the Super Bowl. But we are talking about the Browns and to Sean Watson. And again, to Sean Watson today said no looks in the rearview mirror. I can't focus on the future. I got to focus on now. You know, if I try to look ahead and I get distracted on not focusing on what I need to do now, then you know, who knows what the future might hold. So all I can do is control these moments now, these opportunities I have now. And I want to be just like, Tom, he said, like, you know, he's 60. He feels like this is a shot. So, you know, me being on my last year of my deal and, you know, being your 10, I feel like this is my opportunity to be up there, go and showcase that I can still play in his league. And I can want, I want to continue to play in his league. So this is my opportunity to do that.
Is Todd Monkin the DeSean Watson of head coaches, 216, 474? Where does that come from? Well, no, he said, like Todd said, he's 60. He might never get another job. I was trying to both on their last leg. Yeah, which, by the way, actually disagree with. I think Todd will be fine, even if he flames out here. But Sean's not interested. He flames out here. I probably won't get a coaching job again. I had coaching jobs. So much of everything I've seen about this is, you know, Sean's going to be motivated of all the things I've questioned in the entirety of his time here. I've never questioned that the Sean is motivated. Right? No, but yesterday your question is hard. And I feel like, I feel like this response is a good one in response to the people that believe he doesn't have or doesn't want to necessarily play for the Cleveland Browns. I mean, question is hard. Then I feel like, you're like, well, where's his inspiration going to come from? Where's his give a damn every single week going to come from? If he doesn't want to win for the Cleveland Browns, that's one thing. What's encouraging about this is that you can't work in an independent system. The idea that he might not care to win for the Cleveland Browns, but he cares to win
for his future football life. Yeah, and we'll see. I don't know, because I can't balance the idea of, you're right. I did say that I think that this is going to be tough for him to be like, let's go win one for the Browns fans, guys, let's do this, right? And anyone actually believe him, but I also think it's like, if he fails, I'm not going to be like, he just didn't want it. You know what I mean? I'm going to be like, oh, I'm human and this was a really stupid idea in the first place. Yeah, I mean, if a sports talk host ever, the response is he didn't want it bad enough. You probably should just find new sports talk host to enjoy and listen to because it's locked in for us in that about five years ago. It's just not a good enough reason because all these guys should want it at the end of the day. I mean, this should be, it's funny. I was driving in my car earlier today and I was getting ready. I was like, should I give, should I give Dishon credit for trying to mount this comeback and he could have just, he could have just laid down and said, I'll just take my money and not even bother. And there isn't a lot of traps out there, by the way. Well, the reason why I won't give him credit is because he had to show up in order to collect
the money like he had to. Like, this is still, this is still part of the exchange of all of this is that he had to be here or else he would get fined and then he wouldn't be able to collect the pay checks. And there's a part of me that's still now wonders is like, is he just, is he just going through the motions to make sure the check still clears and everything's all fine. Even though it's guaranteed money is still after easy to find if you don't show up, right? But ultimately, I mean, I don't, I don't give him the credit and I don't, I don't worry or I don't think about this being some sort of massive thing for Dishon and trying to rewrite his history. But that is what he's playing for and he is playing for a future team. 2 1 6 4 7 4 double 0 9 2 how motivated will Dishon watch and be got a couple calls ring it to here in a second and Mike said, why is it a problem to be in the Dishon is the quarterback? I want him to succeed. No one said it's a problem. It's not a problem at all. That doesn't mean you have to believe everything he says in a press conference. Or you also don't have to think it's going to work. You can want it to work the way that like Jeff Phelps you mentioned that clip that was online and his reaction and everything. It's like Phelps wants the Browns quarterback to do well because he wants the Browns to do well.
I feel like you're in that same boat too. You want the Browns quarterback to do well because you want the Browns to ultimately do well. But it doesn't mean that you think it's going to be reality and it doesn't mean that you think that if you had to bet on it, you would bet on that being the prefer or that being the outcome that's going to happen. Yeah, like I think coach coach Riz texted me. I think it was last week of the week before and he was like, all right, Sophie's choice. Dishon is going to let you get you 11 wins, 11 and 6 and you're in the playoffs this year or you know, Shador starts the majority of the game and you're 7 and 10. Which would you choose? Like, what kind of question is that? Like I can't be the guy that rails against tanking. I can't be the guy that says I'm so sick of losing. I don't care how it happens. Just make me a bicycle clown and then be like, but not with Dishon. I will happily eat my own words. I will. I will skip to work every day if this is an 11 win team of Dishon watching the reason they're 11 win team. Right. And you know what? I'll give the Browns all their flowers. I'll go to a damn florist and get more flowers to give them. I'm picking them picking down like burial burial sites.
I do. You just taken flowers everywhere. We have wild flowers out there on the property. I just, you're not going to get rich. You're going to get a spring for me. You have a spring for the nice ones. No, no, no, no. They're flowers. Just accept my flowers. Okay. But your point is right. And I think the accurate one, you are a, you're bad at this job if you're not going to tell people how you really feel. So we have to tell you how we really feel. We just tell you what we think is going to happen while acknowledging that there's a lot of people out there that if they've, to Sean wins 11 games, they don't care that it was the Sean that did it. You just want to win 11 games. That shouldn't be hard. Let's go with Dominic in Strongesville. Dominic, welcome to the show about what you got for us. Uh, tinfoil hat theory. Hmm. Uh, okay. Uh, anybody talked about, uh, the Sean's salary being insured. Yeah. That was a, there was a collection of, you know, considerable amount of money. Not as much as it was originally reported. I, I understand. But by the same token, if you're going to play the Sean at all this year, let's, it's your door going to take us to the Super Bowl.
No. Is the Sean going to take us there? No. Okay. If you got to play a guy because the pain of a crap load of money, play him at the beginning of the year. If you're going to collect any insurance money because this guy's made a glass. He did not got a last. He's proven that, you know, I don't know that anybody thinks he's going to play six games. You know, uh, if you're going to collect some insurance money on this guy's salary, play him at the beginning of the year, bring your door in. He's the homecoming hero and he plays out the rest of the year. All right, Dominic. I'm going to pay that off the air. Thank you very much. I'm not sure. Coach Riz would be able to handle someone suggesting that a team is playing a quarterback because of the insurance money and not to do with who's going to try to win the league. Someone tell coach Riz to pull up to the side of the road and then listen to that clip right there from that call. He might just explode with fury and angry and anger that doesn't really exist within. I also do think and I get it. The Browns have shown endless goal when it comes to things they're willing to do and normalize and tell you that you should like it.
If you don't like it, uh, they'll go ahead and look at you like you're the idiot. I get that. The idea that the Browns would risk, uh, two to five to six to 10 games this year, all to try and get some money, more money out of Dishon Watson. A year ago, the owner said, Hey, we all know this thing didn't work out the way we wanted it to know they have to really believe this. They have to. I also don't believe Todd Munkin would sign up for that. I can't believe Todd Munkin signed up to have Dishon as a starter, but I sure as hell know that guy didn't sign up to have Dishon as a starter for cap purposes. Yeah. It just doesn't make any sense. And that's okay. Uh, I like the theories. Keep them common because we're trying to make as much sense out of this as anybody can. I mean, if you heard Zach earlier, we'll play some clips later on in the show, but he's like, nobody outside the building understands what's going on with this. Yeah. No, he's right. We've all been very confused as to this whole entire process. Yeah. If I, you know, we were talking about the, the Seahawks takes, uh, that have just been in the last like 10 days, it is man.
The Browns have a lot of talent. What the hell are they doing in quarterback? Like, but and it honestly, there were a lot of holdouts on this. And then Dishon went cabloey in that post game and on the field against the reason for us. And the everyone's like, I'm not risking my credibility for this. I'm not going to say that this is going to work out after that. Yeah. I mean, even guys like Albert, who's like, yeah, might, might last two weeks. Yeah. Okay. All right. We'll find out. All right. Howard and Akron, we got about 45 seconds, buddy. What you got for us? I was going, man. Um, I just hope everybody, um, um, um, enjoy the season because we have really, um, you know, grown tomatoes that Dishon watched and, you know, before the season even started. And I wish we were talking about winning more than losing because the whole we talk about is losing. Like, so it's all they do is losing. How are they? One eight games in two years. You know, okay, okay. Okay. But you know, they put some pieces around watching.
We got a pretty good back. We got a, a, a, a region, uh, revamped office of line. We got players on D fifth. I just think you guys should be a little bit more optimistic. Howard, I've said they're going to win eight games this year. I think it makes the most optimistic person. Yeah. I've been called a home earn an A hole for saying that for about three weeks now. And those are exclusive. That's just my kids. Don't give me wrong. Don't give me wrong. You know, cool for what's going on. You know, sworn in here, played up to expectation. But at the same time, it's like, okay, they, you know, they did some work. You know, they, you know, put some things around and we should be competitive. And if we get lucky, maybe we will, we both get lucky. Howard, be good, buddy. Okay. Okay. It's worth for thinking, but think positive. That's all. All right, Howard. Be good. Just hoping Howard gets lucky too. You might have watched a little too much Ted Lasso there. That Howard. That is true. Well, too much believe. I was too much, but somebody went full Nathan.
That's a girl that character in Nathan Shelley. Looking up. I thought we were role playing. You into that, are you? Well, you know, if the mood strikes me, come on. What's fun is fun in my right guys. Let's get the jersey out. When we come back, Tom Pellicero. I don't know about that. As they strung, Miles Garrett reported.
