It's John of the Pito and Nick Padone with you guys in on afternoon drive. We're efforting Albert Breer when he shows up. We'll get him on and that's how that goes. But I want to talk to you about what happened today with Todd Munkin and I really, I don't want to make too big of a deal about it because I can hear other shows tomorrow, for instance. I can hear them already discussing it and being like, well, yeah, Todd Munkin, you know, he might have, might have given some credence to the idea that it should door out of the gate, maybe we walked it back, it wasn't really serious. Okay.
I just, I know what I heard and what I heard Nick was somebody that seemed very enthused at the idea that should or Sanders is in his office a lot and made a point of it to mention how little the Sean Watson had been there and how he hadn't really seen Dylan Gabriel. I don't think those things were an accident. And at this point, when you have a spot with Munkin the way that they do where he's so raw to all this and he's so new to all this, I don't think he knows not to say these type of things quite yet. Yeah. The gamesmanship of it, if you will, you know, it was something to Fanski was good at right out of the gate. Like, to Fanski was a robot, it was hard to get anything out of Kevin any which way. You never knew what he was thinking. You never knew what, if his words were going to match his actions, you just never knew. I think maybe we'll have to have a year of detection with Todd Munkin of what's he serious about? What's just hot air with Todd? Yeah. So with you today, I can't unhear what I heard. And that's he said that how they divvy up these reps going into camp will be predicated on
what they did last year. And to me, that just means Shedore probably is in the driver's seat, but we could be wrong. All right. Let's go out to the make it right. Call Kyle Wright, hotline, Albert Breer, the MMQB dot com joining us here in the fan. Hello, Albert, how you doing today? Hey, guys, how are you doing? We're good. We're trying to recap everything we've seen from the owner's meeting. And I'm much too, I guess not many people surprised, certainly not yours. It felt like Jimmy Haslam and then Andrew Berry both went out of their way to speak in a way about Dishon Watson that definitely made it seem like this is a real serious competition Albert. Yeah, and I don't know why it wouldn't be. I mean, like again, I just look at the totality of this and, you know, I, like I don't know why you would be so sure of any of them where there wouldn't be a real competition, you know? And so, um, look, like I think there's a reason to want to get a look at Shedore Sanders. There's a reason to want to get a look at Dishon Watson. There's a reason to keep your options open, um, you know, when you're going into the draft
and like, do you want to take, you know, one in the second or third round? Do you want to take a flyer on someone later? Like all those things are considered or to be considered because I, like I don't know, I just don't, you know, I don't think there's a great chance that the quarterback of the future is on the roster right now, um, but you want to give everybody who's on the roster a shot to prove that wrong, you know, and so, um, you know, I think you're the best thing for the Browns right now is to open up the competition and, you know, it helps the new coach to and showing that like, hey, you know, if we're going to have, you know, an open fair competition, the most important, um, place in the field, um, then, you know, like everybody else is going to have to compete for their spot as well. Albert, we also got news today that the Browns will host Ty Simpson on the top 30 draft visit before the NFL draft. You mentioned that that could maybe be the outlier if, if, you know, that could shake up this quarterback competition between Watson and Sanders. How much interest do you think is really there?
Obviously, the pre-existing relationship with Todd and Simpson, but how into Ty Simpson are the Cleveland Browns, at least as we sit here today? I think it's, it's something, again, like you have to investigate all this stuff. If he's going to have an answer at the quarterback position long term, um, or there's a good chance that you don't have that answer. So, um, yeah, I mean, they have to take a look at him and, um, you know, they're, I think it's, you know, pretty obvious at this point, Fernando Mendoza is going to be available to him. Um, you know, I, like I, I still, I, I still think most NFL people see Ty Simpson as a second or a third round pick and probably not somebody who can go to elevate to become a great quarterback in the NFL, but, you know, I think the, the flip side of that is that, you know, like there's an upside that maybe he could be brought party. And do you feel comfortable taking brought party in the first round if that's where the upside is? Brock's a really good quarterback, you know, and I've got a really good team around him, but, you know, that's the sort of prospect you're looking at. So, um, do I think that, um, do I think that this is, you know, an indication that they
would consider him, you know, at 24 or in the second round, sure, because they have to consider all their options. I don't think it's a likelihood that Ty Simpson goes in the first round, but, um, you know, again, he can, he can certainly win people over over the next few weeks and, you know, the tape is good. Um, everything you hear on him is, like you just see him doing more NFL things on tape and you see from Fernando Mendoza, which, Mendoza's fault. It's just a little bit easier of a, of a translation, um, you know, with the acknowledgment that he probably doesn't have the upside that Mendoza does. Oh, as you say, you don't think he's going to go in the first round to, uh, why do you think that is? Well, I mean, I, I just, I mean, you guys remember the way I talked about your door last year, right? Yeah. That's why I'm very, that's why I'm very interested in your thoughts here. I just said over and over and over again, and over and over and over again, that I just had not seen, um, you know, I, I had not talked to very many people at all who thought I should do it. It was the first round. I didn't mean he wasn't going to be, because all it takes is one team.
Um, I sort of feel the same way with Ty now, and I've got a lot more calls to make. But, um, you know, the teams I've talked to, um, you know, see him as, uh, as a, you know, a good college quarterback, second or third round pick with a lot of things that you got to wrap your, your head around, you know, um, he's well under the threshold of 25 college starts, which a lot of teams use the golden rule. He's six feet even, you know, um, when he doesn't have a huge arm, he's got a good arm. He doesn't have a huge arm. Um, he's not a super athlete, you know, and, um, you know, so I think he's one of these guys where you look at him and I think this is similar to Shadour, which Shadour was like, what's his superpower? I don't know that Ty Simpson has a superpower either, which I think is why most people look at him as a, you know, as, as a second or third round prospect rather than, um, rather than a first round. In fact, I'd say, like, if you, if you look at the two of them, I, I think they're, you know, the way people talk about, talked about Shadour coming out last year and the way people talk about Ty Simpson, it probably isn't that far off, you know, one from the other.
In a similar realm to that same question, Albert, you mentioned to the fact that the Browns could decide to draft a QB a little bit later on, maybe the Carson backs of the world drew allers. How do you see that shaking out in the draft once it feels like it probably goes for Nando Mendoza, Ty Simpson, but then how's the rest of that all shake out? You know what? I really like the idea of it, um, because I, like, and I, and I, I always think it's a good investment to, to swing if you've got, you know, disposable picks and you've got like a little bit of, you feel like some currency there and, and somebody falls and you're in the fourth or fifth round and okay, like, now we're in the range where, you know, like the, the numbers show you like the guy you draft might not be on your team in two years, you know? So I, I don't, I never mind taking a swing in quarterback in those situations, even if you have one, you know, Ron Wolfe used to do it in Green Bay, um, over and over and over again, even when he had Brett Farve, um, you know, so like do you, do you roll the dice
with the Arkansas kid talent, Green, you roll the dice with through Aller and everything that, you know, and, and, and look at everything that happened with him at 10 state and say, you know, there's still something to work with there. I, you know, I, I think those sorts of things, the beauty about, the beauty of, of doing that to me is you're taking a swing and it doesn't take you off the market from taking one the next year. Like if you take one at six or 24 chances are you're not taking another quarterback next year, right? Um, or that you have to that take one and the third or the fourth of the fifth round, you're very easily just turn around and, and, and take another one the next year. So in that way, it's almost a free shot where you're not taking yourself off the market to try to get an answer on term, but you're maybe you are, you know, getting a chance to look at a guy with some upside. Albert, we're joining us here on the make a right call, call right hotline. Uh, so last week they did the Miles Garrett restructure and it set up the door to be open for them to potentially trade them. We're expecting June second and beyond if that happens somewhere around that, that framework and there's something you've been on for a, I mean, a year plus now, it feels like that
idea that, uh, it might be the best interest to trade Miles Garrett if you're the Browns. What did you make of them basically coming out and being about as open as possible in the idea that they've now made it available that he could be traded, but Andrew Berry still has this insistence that he won't be traded. I, I have a hard time seeing them do it. I, I think I've been on a record. I think they should. Um, and that, that is, there's no front of Miles Garrett who is going to be a first out hall famer in my opinion. Um, you know, it's just, I, I look at timelines here and I look at like where he is. And so, you know, like, let's say that the Browns knock it out of the park again this year in the draft. And so now you've got, um, you got, you got, um, Carson Swessinger and Nathan Graham and Harold Fanon and Quinchon Judkins, um, from this year. And then next, and then, and then, and then, uh, or from last year, and then this year, you get, you know, four or five guys for a good contributors, and then next year you get the quarterback, right? So like, that would like line up, like, manage all starting to come together now.
And you'd be talking about 27, like, you know, you've got a shot to maybe contend with a young quarterback, like be a, be a relevant team and then 28th, the, the, the breakthrough, right? At that point, Miles Garrett is going to be 32 turning 33 at the end of that year. So the timelines match up and that's like my question, you know, or would you be better off getting two or three first round picks for him and really juicing your rebuild, you know? Um, you know, I know it'd be hard to, to walk away from Miles Garrett. I, I get that. Um, it's always hard to trade a player that magnitude away, um, but the way I look at it, you know, you know, it could be for the Browns sort of what, I mean, if you want to look back at it, what the Seahawks trading Russell Wilson was, um, you know, a lot of the basis of the Seahawks subo team this year was built in the back of that trade, you know? And, um, I think in, you know, sort of a similar way, you could really give yourself some juice to, to, to take the rebuild to another level.
Package, do you think the Browns could get? We saw the Max Crosby thing almost was Albert, if they decided that they wanted to start to float that possibility, what kind of return do you think the Browns would be able to get for somebody like a Miles Garrett? Okay. I think, uh, I think we, I think we lost Albert there. I think that's what that is. Is that what that is, Mack? I can't read your lips through the glass. Just, just go on. We have a tornado warning. Okay. All right. Sorry about that. Albert. Let's get you back on here. Obviously, we had a tornado warning there. Go ahead. Yeah. We had a little bit of a tornado warning there. But I did want to ask you, Albert, about what a return in bow down. No, we're still standing. Thankfully. Um, I did want to ask you about if they decide to entertain a trade for Miles Garrett. What that package could look like? Because we saw what, um, Mack Crosby almost went for. What do you think a return would look like for Miles? If the Browns decided they wanted to entertain that.
I did the baseline. I, I, I wouldn't move them for less than two ones. That would be my baseline. I think some of that, like him, you know, can give a little bit of a moving target because. You know, that first round or. You know, where is it? And if it's not this year, you know, we're talking about 2027 first round or how do you value that? Um, you know, so I think like two ones would be like my baseline and I would, you know, try to get more. And I think, you know, just. I mean, Max is a great, great player, but he's not Miles Garrett. You know, and so. You know, I, I think there'd be something out there. Um, you know, in the multiple first round kicks plus range for them. And. And again, like it's not bad thing about it to me that makes it so interesting is like. At least 30. So this isn't going to be forever. You know what I mean? Like his value of the chance to do this is starting to run a little thin. And you know, so I think you still have the opportunity to do it, but the clock's definitely ticking on gain that sort of value for him.
Albert, the Browns had withdrawn their rules, changed proposal that would have allowed them to trade draft picks up to five years in advance rather than the current three. Did it just never have any legs or was it just about the Browns? What was the deal there? They knew I think they knew that it wasn't going to get through this year. I think the idea was just to start the discussion, which. Um, I think they accomplished that. And you know, giving some teams, giving the teams a chance to kind of look at it and, and, and, and maybe revisit it next year or a year after. So I think they knew what the thing was going to have been a very little chance of going through this year. Um, but my expectation is you're probably going to hear about it again. Albert, as we're getting ready for the NFL draft and we're talking about realistic things that can go down for the Browns at the sixth pick. It feels like everybody that we're talking to from the draft world is telling us that there's not really a left tackle worth trading at six. There's not really a receiver worth taking at six. Maybe everybody would feel like a reach in that spot.
Do you see a world where there would be a player that could be available that teams would want to trade up for so the Browns could fall back a few spots. That's tough. I think. Yeah. I just, I don't see it right now because once Mendoza's off the board, and even he's not this, but he just don't have like the prototype. You know, like you've got like a lot of very good players that maybe aren't, aren't perfect prospects at the top. You know, you've got. You know, David Bailey, who, you know, I think it's seen as like a Nick Benito type of Russia. He's not. He's a really good player. He's not miles Garrett. You know, you have our release who you're going to be projecting. How do you use him off the ball on the ball? What's the plan for him? You have to have a plan for him. So many styles and off ball linebacker, non-premium position, Caleb Downs, non non-premium position at safety. Jeremiah Love, non-premium position and running back, you know. I just, I don't know what is going to create what's going to create the market for, for, for a pick in the top 10.
Generally, it takes runs with these positions. And, and maybe I think that that you could happen a little later in the top 10 when some of the top pass rushers start coming off. But I, I don't see anybody taking a big swing to go all the way up. Albert Breer, MMQB, we appreciate you as always. Fantastic insight and we'll catch up with you next week. All right. Thanks guys. All right. Thank you so much. Albert Breer right there on the make it right call Kyle right hotline. We're at to what Albert had to say in particular about Thai Simpson. I thought that was very interesting because the Albert was the guy that was dead on when it came to Shoulder Sanders last year. We didn't listen. He's not in listen to a lot of the warnings that he was given off. He's given some pretty clear warnings when it comes to Thai Simpson. We'll react to that. Get your phone calls as well. 216-474-192. It's afternoon drive right here in the fan. I, I had not talked to very many people at all who thought she was the first runner. It didn't mean he wasn't going to be because all it takes is one team. I sort of feel the same way with Thai now. And I've got a lot more calls to make. But, you know, the teams that I've talked to, you know, CM is a, you know, good college quarterback.
Second or third round pick was a lot of things that you got to wrap your, your head around, you know. He's not a super athlete, you know. And, you know, so I think he's one of these guys where you look at him. I think there's a similar to Shoulder. What should do or it was like what's his superpower? I don't know that Thai Simpson has a superpower either, which I think is why most people look at him as a, you know, as a second or third round prospect rather than a first round. In fact, I'd say like if you look at the two of them, I think they're, you know, the way people talk about Shoulder coming out last year and the way people talk about Thai Simpson, it probably is that far off, you know, one from the other. That was Albert Breary joined us last segment. And what's interesting about that is that I feel like it opens up a lot of possibilities in the conversation of what do you do with Thai Simpson? But it also opens up the idea that if let's say they take him at I'm not even saying 39 the way Albert's talking is second or third. That's a different convo Nick like that's completely different. If you take him in the third round, you are very much in Shoulder Sanders territory from last year,
where it's not about then making him the franchise quarterback. It's then about this was extremely great value. And if he turns into something, he turns into something. Yeah, but if he's just the same exact quarterback that should or is, if that's what Albert's telling us where, you know, he doesn't view either Shoulder Sanders or Thai Simpson as a long term. I disagree with that with Albert, by the way, the idea that should or didn't have any elite traits. I think his accuracy was an elite trait. Whereas with Thai Simpson, I agree with him 100%. I don't see anything elite. That's why I'm not the biggest Thai Simpson guy. So it's it's felt like if if that's the fact is that they're very similar in that round, then you should probably just avoid Thai Simpson altogether. I'm fascinated to understand how did the Browns view this though, because Munkin and Simpson have really been exchanging pleasantries since it feels like Indianapolis. Yet at the same time, Munkin definitely certainly sounds like he's warmed up to the idea should or Sanders. So it will be very fascinating to see how this all unfolds because Albert went through cold water all over where I was coming from on the Thai Simpson thing is at least if you do it in the first round, you've got a plan.
You've at least liked something enough. You feel convicted towards Thai Simpson. Whereas if Thai Simpson ends up being 39 or 70, I'm good. Because then you're it's just more of the same and you're really targeting one in 2027. And if that's the case, then I'm just good to ride with Shadour Sanders. I saw enough last year where I'd be willing to just continue forward with Shadour Sanders. I'm not muddying that any further. I think Shadour is the better quarterback. I haven't been shy about that. I think Shadour Sanders as of today doesn't mean Thai Simpson three years from now could be something. I mean, it could be some way different in that conversation. But like as of today, I think the quote I had on it yesterday or maybe last week, whatever it was, was that if I had one game faded the universe tomorrow, am I choosing Thai Simpson who's six feet tall and has played in 13 college games. And I mean, he's been in college for five years, but 13 college games are my taking Shadour Sanders. I'm taking Shadour Sanders. I'm with you and one to one. I'm taking Shadour Sanders over Thai. So that's part of the problem then. So like if they take this quarterback, let's say in the second round or the third round, you're spending draft capital on a team that desperately needs.
We have a lot of draft capital, but you need guys. You need people. And even what happened at the edge position today where that AJ epinese doesn't go through with this free agent contract. Like now you could probably use a little bit of depth at edge. Like they have these nine draft picks. It's not to say that you could just light them on fire like they did last year by drafting two quarterbacks. Like they should have just drafted Shadour at 94 last year. Instead of doing Shadour and Gabriel together, it confused the entire thing. One to one Shadour and Thai Simpson. I'm taking Shadour every single time. Well, so if Shadour is going to win out that battle, by the way, I think he would. If he's going to win out that battle, then what are you doing? You're spending a second or a third round pick on Thai Simpson for what? Like you still have to keep your options open for the 2027 draft. Do the Browns see it that way? And that's the variable that we just don't know yet. If the Browns think that Shadour Sanders is this far off project quarterback. If the Browns think that Shadour Sanders long term is shorter, James Winston or Jacobi Brasad, then they might really be serious about Thai Simpson.
I don't know how the Browns genuinely feel about Shadour Sanders because I get mixed signals. It sounds like the coach like some. It sounds like the general manager in the owner. Maybe not so sure if they're contemplating playing a guy who hasn't been good since the last time Tiger Woods was winning Masters. I just don't know how you confidently know what Shadour Sanders is one way or another right now. I don't know the people that think he's going to be awesome. I love you. I do. I don't know how you can confidently say that right now. But I also don't know how you can confidently say you think he's going to be Jacobi Brasad either. We just didn't see enough last year in a proper setting to be able to try to evaluate that. I get it if you want to come back down to earth a little bit on some of the projections with Shadour. I certainly have myself, but I've not thrown him out with the trash either. I don't know how you could possibly do that after the situation that he was put in last year. And then so like if that was their thought process that he's just a career back up right now that would really surprise me that would I've just put it if we want to play with that idea. Then if you take what Tyson's in in the second or third round and then that's your that's your lottery ticket. Is that how they're viewing it like that's your guy the boomer bus that's so messy.
The boomer bus. Yes, it sounds messy for a reason, but is that like your boomer bus to proposition that I've been describing for Shadour. Is it really just time? Here's what we do know that's annoying if it's true because again, that's not a plan. I know that's not a real plan. It's not a plan. And here's how it exposes that it's not a plan is that you'd be banking on Tyson's in falling to the second or third round to even see this plan through. And then and then banking on hitting a lottery ticket like that. What do we know what do we know about this team that would scare you into that logic. They love value. That's what they always preach. That's how we got in the Shadour. You're scaring me that they're going to do they're they're not going to do it at 24. You're scaring me that they're going to do it at 39. And they're just going to add to the confusion of Sanders, V Gabriel, V Watson, V Simpson in round two if he's to get there. If he gets to round two, then you don't love them that much though. If you love Ty Simpson, at least be convicted and draft them in the first round. Like I missed those days. The browns right now feel dead. I miss having a little bit of conviction when we used to sit here and argue.
Do you want Baker? Do you want Darnold? Like people were pounding the tables and planting flags for these guys. I don't even love Ty Simpson as a prospect. We've been through that plenty over these last couple of hours. I don't think Ty Simpson is God's gift to football by any stretch of the imaginative. I'm just looking for a real plan. That's what I've devolved into. I used to sit here and debate these prospects in Baker and I loved his accuracy and his attitude. And Darnold, I was worried about the interceptions and the fumbles and the ball security. Like I miss all of that. Now we're talking about, oh, maybe sneaks into the second round and we could get him for value. Like there's no conviction there. There's no long term planning there. I agree with you. But what I'm saying is I didn't listen to Albert last year when he spoke the way that he didn't. He was dead on and I'm not going to fall for the same mistake twice. He tells me the people he talks to around the NFL say Ty Simpson's not going in the first round. At least the majority of people he's spoken to. That's how the NFL thinks. I'm led to believe he's right. He was right last year. I'm led to believe he's right now. 216-474 to below 92. We'll continue with your phone calls and we'll also get into a cab discussion as well.
I can't believe with Channing Fry to say about Evan Mobile. You'll want to hear it next right here at the fan.
