Hour 2 - Debate Over Mets Winning 90 Games, Crying Athletes, Tiger Thinking Masters

He has emerged at least in my world in this off season. His takes have driven host crazy may Tommy Lou Gauer absolutely scream at him over and over again. It even gets boomer a little bit. I have to say you almost did it in the last phone call with Paul at Yonkers.

1:03You almost fought him on the minor leagueers thing. And I said listen, you can't don't do that thing. Don't do that. You can't fall for it. You can't get angry at Paul. But he is angry at us. Because we both said that the match should win or we're expecting them to win over 90 games. Well, by that by prediction markets there. They are. Yes. And his voice has been such a powerful one on this radio station. We have had entire families call up and say they speak to each other before work at school in Paul and Yonkers voice. Yes. Like before they leave though. Say good luck before they leave the door. Get out of here when they're about to go to school. Yeah. So so this is this is who was online wants to talk some meds with us on the eve of at least meds baseball. We got the Yankees tonight Paul. Good morning. How are you? Good morning and let the games be guys. I feel like Paul before you continue. I feel like you almost want to be right.

2:07More than you want the meds to win. Is that a fair criticism? You know, I'm angry. I'm angry would happen here. I know it's my body. I know it's Peter Lanzo and it don't make sense. That's what I'm angry about. So you're saying yes you would. Peter Lanzo for no reason and didn't replace them. So you're saying that you would rather be hold on Paul. You'd rather be right about Peter Lanzo going on a tear with the Orioles. The meds not making the playoffs and the meds actually having successes. I don't care what the Orioles do. I don't care what Peter Lanzo does with the Orioles. Okay. All right. I needed him on first space. I needed his 40 and 100 of the eyes. To me, letting him go doesn't make sense. Now, if the meds have a better offense than they did last year and have a better season, better postseason performance, will you admit that you were wrong about moving on from Peter Lanzo?

3:10Yes. Okay, good. I don't know the right answers, Paul. Good job. But I can't say it. I want somebody to explain it to me. Here we go. First boomer. You said we're going to the meds are going to win 90 games. I'm waiting for you to say April fools. I'm just kidding. That's what I'm waiting for, but you didn't say it. Yeah, well, I'm not allowed to say that. And by the way, I actually do believe in my heart that they are a better team than they were last year. Sorry. How is straight baiting on this team? Two years he tried to make the team. The shoveling down like throughout this year. Get off my team. Get out of here. I don't belong on this. How do you like your whole of bean soup superstar? 4:11Yeah. Tiny movement. Paul. Just moving. Paul, I feel you this week. Paul, I do feel you this week, because I've been slapping around a minor league or myself for a couple of days. But, you know, I think that you might be over rating Peter Lonzo a little bit too much. When you're calling him a Hall of Famer, it's just a little bit too much. No, no one showed him. They made him move for the minor league. A caution bench. He might be grace. That's the thing. Why? I don't need that. You don't know about any of it. Paul, you don't know how it works. Are you a mobile man or not? No. You're not a mobile. You are a mobile. You are a mobile. Okay. But everything's difficult. All right. So getting, so getting down to the kickoff to summer at Belmar would be a difficult thing for you. Buddy, this is me. The fun of Paul from Yankees.

5:11I am not blue eyes and blonde hair. That cute little ten-year-old girl that you had redo my call. She'll run to the hills. I don't want anybody to know who Paul from Yankees. Okay. That's fine. I respect that. You know what? I'm not there to be on the camera. Listen, I respect that. I don't want to do it. Some people do. Some people don't. And I will honor that request that I'm not going to push it. The fun part. The fun part of it. All this is the people that don't know who I am. I'm having the time of my life with it. You are. Well, that's great. Yeah. You guys asked me and a couple of them. You want me in. I don't want to do it. I would blow. Who Paul from Yankees says. It will be never mind. I don't know. That's a sad thing to say. I don't think that. You know, that's me. Yeah. That's me. We're not going to. Paul, we know you're great on the radio. We love to hear your takes on the radio. I don't think what you look like showing up at the radio stage.

6:13You would all of a sudden say no thanks and put you back in the elevator. There's all the time. I'm a monster. Do you think we are? That was great. It's just me. It's just me. It's just me. I'm just having the time of my life with this. And I don't want to mess it up. You know, I'm just enjoying this. And I don't want to be seen. Okay. I love it. It's fun. To the match. Yeah. I just wanted to say before I let you go. Oh. To the coin. And it's done. Get out of here. Yeah. Very good. Paul, thank you. I mean, I don't died. We met fan for sure. Yeah. I know. We're all. We're all a little bit upset that Pete Alonso was here. The meds weren't going five years. Let's just face it. They weren't going five years. They had a deal with him last year. He opted out of it again. And he got the most money for his family. And that is great for Pete. And he finally got the contract that he was hoping to get. And I couldn't be happier for him.

7:13I hope he does well down on Baltimore. But man, I, I root for the laundry. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? I'm, I was just like you were saying about St. John's and college basketball and the guys here for, you know, a year and then go somewhere else, whatever. I am rooting for the meds. And I do believe that David Sterns basically overturned this roster and is trying to make the team come closer together. I do believe that there was an issue in that locker room. I don't know what the issues were. You never know. But David Sterns, the manager, you know, they fired half the coaching staff. I mean, let's face it. There were, there have been a million changes on this roster. Yeah, there, there's no doubt that it takes ruthlessness to turn things around. That's your favorite word when it comes to general managers. And this was one of those moves in the eyes of the fans where Pete Alonso was not going to get it off her. We were not going to bring him back. And it exposes David Sterns and Steve Cohen to a certain degree into major, major fan criticism,

8:14because Pete's a guy who could put on an offensive show. And the meds are a team that obviously we've seen them have brutal seasons, even with good players. And if that happens, that's going to be brought up over and over and over again. The other problem though, for Pete is that he could go five games without a home run. And I come up in the clutch. More than that. But he could not come in, you know, up in the clutch in three of those five games when all you need is a hit. Sure. I mean, like, so while the numbers, they jump off the page and we all like Pete and we all loved him as the polar bear and he was our guy. I mean, it's time to move on. And this is, and you say David Sterns is exposed. I say David Sterns actually put a reasonably good team together. If you bring in Marcus Simeon and Boba Schett, come on. Those guys are professional bass players. Yeah, but that's a two things can be true spot. I agree. I think he puts it again. I like the off season. I really like the off season. I was someone who was totally fine with Peter Lonzo leaving. And when I said it the first time before, they didn't give him a contract. Met fans were all over my ass and disagreeing with it.

9:16But I also think that because of the reaction from the fan base, if it doesn't work out and Pete has some awesome season, the meds have an awful season, then Sterns is going to hear that. And he needed to expose, I gotta think of a better word, needed to expose himself in that way. He needed to make himself vulnerable in that way, because he had to change something. And when you fully believe in that this needed a major, major shakeup after what happened last year. Especially after you spent $760. You gotta take chances on Juan Soto. To me, the spending of the money and the amount of money, that's an easy deal for GM to do. You know, there was no way that the Yankees were going to ever, ever make a deal with Juan Soto. And they could, they could have hit behind, you know, when I given a suite to our players, they could have hit behind all that kind of crap. Yeah. The fact is they weren't going to pay anybody more than they're paying Aaron Judge. That's just, that's just all there is to it.

10:17And they knew that the meds were going to go to the degree that they did in order to sign him. So that, from a general manager standpoint, that's, that's an easy signing. Actually. Yeah. You got an owner that wants them. You've got all this money and you're going to give them a suite, whatever. And you're going to treat him like a rod was treated like berry bonds was treated. That's fine. And that maybe was part of the problem in that locker room. You never know how people respond to crap like that. Yeah. I mean, it does sound like the Lindor Soto thing was a thing. But we never really found out what the specific issues with Pete if there weren't any specific issues with Pete. Bob said it could have been Nemo, McNeill and Pete. It could have been the, you know, you got it. You got to turn over the roster eventually. And you got to move on, especially if you feel like you're stuck. And, you know, they're, they have two rookies on the team coming up this year. No one McLean and Carson Benj and both are going to be asked to fill very big roles. Yeah. I mean, this is very similar to what happened with Brian Dable and Joe Shane in the first year

11:19that they took over the Giants. We've made this comparison before. There was unexpected success. And then they ended up keeping guys. And maybe they wouldn't have kept if they didn't have that unexpected success. They come back the next year, everything blows up. And then eventually things go down the toilet. But David Stern probably wanted to do all this stuff the off season before. But the team ended up going to the NLDS. Yeah. Yeah, out of the blue. So he kind of quasi ran it back. But he added one soda to the team. Yes, of course. Yeah. Absolutely. And we all thought it was going to be a hell of a lot better than it was. Yeah, well, you know, well, you know, you know, it's just you just never know about the makeup of the team. And again, I go back to what we said early on this morning about the way that the Yankees are perceived. And the fact that they ran it back with everybody. And I do believe that they were hamstrung by the amount of money that they had paid other players, including Trent Christian giving him the contract option. And he took the option and all of a sudden that changed kind of the direction of what

12:19they were going to have happen in the off season. But I, I just think that that locker room is a tight knit locker room. I don't think the Mets were a tight knit locker room last year. The year before, yes, not last year. So you got a Lyndon Long Beach was going on, Lynda. So you know, Stern's tried to sell the Mets fans. He keeping them from scoring runs, the opposition. Run prevention, Lynda remember? Remember, remember was all about run prevention. Exactly. And how many people are playing out of position in the infield for the Mets? Yeah. A couple. Yeah. A couple. I mean, you know, they, they, they, they said, uh, uh, Elanza was a negative at first base. Who's playing first, who's playing first for the Mets? Who's on first? Well, I mean, it's the, who's on first? I'd say there's going to be Polanco. It's going to be baby. It's those two guys. I mean, they're going to be switching back. And what I hear they said first is part of it. And it looks. Well, yeah. I mean, yeah, but the other thing you have to take into account is how much money you're spending on the guy at first.

13:21You know what? They won fans in the stands. They spent three quarters of a billion dollars on one player. And now they're trying to sell us the run prevention and they want us to show up. Give me a Dexter. You know, come on. Come on. It gives us a tight infield. It's just not there. Dexter be to pay to the ass again this morning. Yeah. Dexter is the one, huh? The one that just you cannot solve. They all are paying the ass, but I love them all. Of course. You know, we have a new battle. Linda, we have a new battle cry as med fans and I want you to give it a try, okay? Get out of here. I like trying to get out of here. I like the ones. Oh, he wasn't perfect. But first face is tough. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, statistically he was the worst first baseman in baseball by a lot. That's what David Stern is going to point to. Yes, you replaced him with two guys who are first bases, not their natural position.

14:22But I just need to see how this thing plays out. I like this team better than they did last year on paper. Allow. I'll allow two calls through. Both were negative net fans still hanging on. But that's what this is. That's what they are right now. That's what the fan base is, right? Not that. I know. But we are the fan base. I'm not that. But I think we're, I mean, you know, me, I'm not always positive with the meds. I'm more negative generally. But in this instance, me and you are against the grain with the meds going into the year. Get out of here. The fan base, I think, is pissed. I mean, remember last year they bought all the tickets because of Juan Soto and all the games. This year was a meds ticket sales person's nightmare. And whether or not we agree with the pedalanzo move or not or how it goes. Most of the fans love the guy so much and couldn't understand like Paul Wally. Why they didn't even off from a country. All right. So if you ask me the guy coming into this season right now.

15:24And by the way, let's not forget that they lost Edwin Diaz. And the reason they lost Edwin Diaz because Edwin Diaz decided that he wanted to play in LA. He had the same offer and they would have probably went to the same number. Yeah. But he wanted to be in LA. All right. So I've never begrudged a player for wanting to go somewhere else if they have the opportunity to do that. Which Edwin Diaz has earned. So no question about that. But David Stern's pivoted before that signing happened. He knew that signing was going to happen. That's why he signed Devin Williams. He knew it was going to happen. And he had to make sure that he had a closer that he was familiar with. And he made that decision. And it was probably not an easy decision. It was probably one of these plan B things. And the plan B thing, hopefully it works out. And if that part of it works out, then you got to give him credit for being aware of what was happening when it was happening and what he was going to do in reaction to that happening. Yeah. I mean, there's going to be a lot of moves that are scrutinized. The letting Edwin Diaz go thing to me is not a real thing.

16:25He wasn't letting him go. He didn't want to be here. He was, the meds were not going to retain him unless they went way, way over. Yeah. I mean, and so again, like I would say from a general manager standpoint, if you want to talk about Darren Moogium, what he's doing with the Jets and how he's acquiring all these assets, which has been amazing. Yeah. In the midst of losing, he's still doing his job in a positive fashion. And now with the free agent signings, and then hopefully this draft hall that he's bringing in, they're going to be able to get on the road back to where they're going. The different pressure for David Sterns is that he's got to deliver a winning team. You know what I'm saying? He's got to deliver a winning team. And in order to deliver that winning team, he had a pivot pretty quickly in signed Devon Williams. Let's go to Vinnie and Queens. What's going on, Vinnie? Hey, what's going on? Gio, I'm just really curious. I really love your sports takes. I'm curious what you think about Shamanai is dipping velocity really. Oh my God.

17:30For those who get it, you know what Vinnie's talking about. Oh, that was that was one of the most unintentionally funny things I've watched in a while. Rare, you know, branded response to everything where he thinks he's like really getting me. He's really getting me. All right. And he's got this backdrop behind him that's got this glare on it. He's got this horrible backdrop. He's got a glare on it. See, it's like you're basically watching these things. You can handle your face. And he goes, you know, nobody takes Gio's baseball opinion seriously. Like, you ever hear of talking about Vinnie's different velocity? I'm looking at a spray chart going up. All right. All right. We can all have a little detent now. It's all good. Everybody's great. Everybody's got it off their chest. No, it was just hilarious. Don't you wish you could curse though? Every now and again. I mean, anything that's, you know, that first cough up mucus in the morning that I have is it's, I can't imagine that my body made that thing. It's like this hunk. Yeah. Green. Yeah. So you're probably I'm not like you should a little mucinex guys in it. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

20:35Yeah. It's a bad one. So I'm going to have to do something about it. You're going to need anybody out of it. Which I know is not always the thing to do all the time, but I don't care. No, but if you have an infection, you have a bacterial infection, you got to do the antibiotics. And you've tried to let you use the antibiotic. You've tried to let your body fight it like a week now, though. Yeah. And that's what kind of like we're fighting it with them. Grock. Well, yeah. I mean, I don't think it's held me back too much. I mean, you hear me hacking. I actually think you were still sick. No, it's I'm still hacking. Boomer knows every break. I'm hacking. Spinning the garbage pill. Yeah. It happens. They did for you. So he was super emotional, as you can imagine, as his career comes to a great career. It's a great message. It really is. It's just when. It's a great message. Of course it is. These are all great messages. And the voice goes off. Yeah. It's hard not to laugh. What else you got for us? And at some point, we're going to be there too. Boomert just walked away and said, see ya. Yeah. He would crawl up to us. It's us. And he would do an oomper. Well, I didn't find a few. I didn't necessarily remember this one. And this is the lesser of the bunch, but David Wright, when he announced his retirement. And lastly, my family and friends, mom, dad, and of course my beautiful wife Molly

22:49and girls, Olivia and Madison. At this point, he takes a towel to his face to try and clean himself up. Then you had Brett Farve, retirement number one of nine. I'd like to thank the Packers for giving me an opportunity as well. I hope that every penny, if you want to find me, I'll be stealing money from the government. But then I found this guy online yesterday. This was just an attorney crying at sentencing. I did these crimes. And I deserved to go to town. I don't know what I was going to say to myself. What did he say? I did these crimes. I deserved to go to town. I did these crimes. And I deserved to go to town. I don't know what I was going to say to myself. I don't know how I'm crying.

23:49In that case, do yes. And there's the best one of all. There's the Mike Schmidt one. Just some 18 years ago, I left Dayton, Ohio with two very bad knees. And a dream to become a Major League Base football player. I think I did came true. He had that point. So this is the first time I pulled up the whole thing. He walked away. Oh, did he? Yes. He couldn't get through it. So he walked away. So I guess they did this in like the look like it looked like a locker room of some sort of clubhouse. He walked away and stood in like an open locker, just like wiping his face and trying to gather himself and they're talking, making him laugh. And then someone else came up like, well, he's doing this. We'll talk more about him. So yeah, it was a very long one. And so then when you go through these, sometimes you find I noticed you reacted to the bread far of noise in the middle of it.

24:50I came up with this sound. You tell me who and where this came from. Jesus Christ. That's a Havolina. No, not a Havolina. Any thoughts? Carlin? So I figured you would say Carlin because he has made noises like that. It is not. It is this guy. John L. Wei. I can't do it physically anymore. And that's really hard for me to say. Did he bring one of those horses next to him? At the Broncos everyone around? Wow, wow. Yeah. So those are the ones I had the Jason Kelsey one too, but I forgot to put that in the system. Before I came in, I was fooling around with this John L. Wei one time. I don't remember the time Brady cry. I don't remember. I just did that thing from the beach.

25:50Memory did his retirement from the beach. Is that how he did it? Yeah, he never had like a press conference. Press conference. I went through it. He didn't. He did not. He started to. I have not gotten you like. Okay. I put into chat the most famous crying retirement. Yeah. And that's where I came up with these. Jason Kelsey actually comes up as the top one. Maybe because it's most recent. But so, but the L. Wei one is very good. And the Mike Schmidt one. I mean, just takes the cake. So you do have that. Zach Wilson goes to the St. Joe Flacco to resign with the Bengals. All right. Let's get to the next from last night. Took on a struggling Pelican's team. But Zion Williams and did play. They do have some good players. But there's a much better Pelican's team this time last night than they played them a few weeks ago. Yes. And the it was a close game. But the next two pull it out. Murray drives on Clarkson. Pulls up shot. Short rebound. Brunson. Brunson ahead the heart. Heart goes up. Banks at home. Beautiful fast break. And it's back up by six.

26:50And they won by 5-1-21-1-16. Mike Brain with the call on MSG. Josh Hart 10 and 8 in the game. It was Jalen Brunson that had 32. Making big shot after big shots. So much so that Brain said this going to break. One of those players you should never take for granted. He has changed everything since his arrival in New York. And gets the next. There are seven straight wins. And 48 to the season. Yep, 48 and 25 on the season. Again, Mike on MSG. This was hard. This is the club I was talking about last hour. Talking about Brunson. The big plays put in the ball in his hands down the stretch. You learn when you watch this game or you play this game. It'll last. But therefore, the minutes of the game is winning time. That's when your players go. Your superstars remain. They always go out there and show them why. They're at that level. So that's what you do. And it seems always do it. Carlynth and he towns a good game. 21 points, 14 rebounds. His head coach Mike Brown. He's made adjustments.

27:50He's kept working. He continues to work. But his head coach, I have to make adjustments too. Especially with him being one of our two best players. What do you mean? By the way, he didn't play. I think he played like 26 minutes last night. That was it. He's a 20 and 10 guy walking when he comes into the building. So when he doesn't do that, it is surprising. But he did it last night. Nixon Celtics now tied for second. And in the east, as we head down the stretch of the season, you got the Netson Golden State tonight. North Carolina did firehead coach, Ubert Davis. So they are in search of a new head coach. Is there any like big rumors about who's going there? Usually when programs like that fire their coach is always like that one guy that you know they're going to get. I'd Sarah Hughes with McNamara. I haven't heard that. But the one thing a lot of the experts are saying is that they're going to really go after the biggest names. Like I guess Ubert Davis hadn't been a head coach prior to this job. They're not doing that again. They want a guy that's been there, done that. And of course the first name that pops up, not that I think he would take the job, would be Jay Wright. That name is out there. But you know, we shall see.

28:52Jerry McNamara did go to Sarah Hughes. Tiger Woods played the TGL championship. They lost. Here he was in terms of where he is physically though. Says he does want to compete again at the highest level. I've been trying. It's just that this body doesn't recover like it was when it was 24 or 25. It doesn't mean I'm not trying. And then the idea of the Masters, which is something that has been out there for the last month or so. I keep trying. I want to play. I've loved the tournament. I love being there since when I was 19 years old. So it's meant a lot to me and my family and over the years. And I'm going to be there either way. With the loop that's going up there as well as. You know, the champion's done. But that's the coolest thing about this is the actual real sand that you play out of. Which makes it real rough too. Yeah. That too. Absolutely. But they did lose in their championship. I kind of feel like it's forced. Well, it has been this year like so.

29:52I'll be honest with you know me. I'm a sickle with the content, the golf content. Last year I watched it. I didn't watch a single one this year. It didn't come back to it. And part of the reason why was they had those back to back hole in ones that I thought were fake. I thought that they made those because they didn't have a single one last year. And they made those for like digital content stuff for everybody to go running for it. And I just, I don't know. I didn't buy into it this year. The thing about the Bob does sports stuff. It's the personalities involved. It's fun. You know, they hit the ball like you do or whatever. And you can kind of get it behind it, especially when they have good personalities. They're playing against. Yeah. I mean, this is just another money grab by the players. It's just like the flag football thing was out now. I don't know. It feels fake. It feels disingenuous. And what frankly, I'm not interested at all in it. Yeah. I was at first. Not anymore. Hockey last night. Islanders falling to the black Hawks. I can sell the function. That goes to the building. Did not make you lost the puck. And they scored. Frank Neizo will the one time run a feed out of the corner.

30:54After the admirers thought they should have been icy and winds up in the back of their neck. Made it a 4-1 game. I'll score a couple but lost 4-3. Brendan Burke on MSG. You heard him reference the fact that the I'll thought icing was going to be called. So Patrick Wah was asked. He says, uh-huh. The referee said he made a mistake to us. It was over. I mean, that's all it was. I mean, that's all. I mean, it was a bad timing for us. It's unfortunate. But that's part of the game. Especially when every point is crucial.
