Hour 2: AFC North predictions + Ashley Bastock

One of the biggest storylines this off season though in the Odyssey North was while Baltimore had changed at the head coach spot while Pittsburgh had changed at the head coaching spot. The Browns had all sorts of change, but certainly at the head coaching spot. And certainly ambiguity at the quarterback spot. It was more about the future of Joe Burrow and whether he would lose patience with the the the bangles inability to build a winner around him. Yeah. So it's pretty noteworthy when this week is a matter of fact yesterday, he came out and said that he's not going anywhere and that he

1:01plans to be in Cincinnati for the rest of his career. I thought there was a really interesting thing for him to say when he spent the entirety of the off season allowing the ambiguity to put pressure on the bangles to do moves he wanted, namely, trend and the 10th pick in the draft for Dexter Lawrence. I mean, I think just nobody believed him when he put that out there, right? I mean, that's it was on the bangles website of all things. I just I'm not taking him that's not gospel to me. That's not something that I feel like I'm going to throw to a year from now. And so maybe listen, this might end up being you me having confirmation bias for how I've thought and I think maybe you too. I think Joe wants to appear to be tough on the bangles and I do think he wants to use and leverage his power to get the moves that he thinks will will be difference makers done. But I don't think Joe I've never thought Joe has the stomach to do what what certainly to Sean Watson did to get out of Houston, right? Where he to Sean Watson came out and I think it was a February and it was just like I don't want to be here anymore. Trade me. People forget that all the allegations

2:01came about a month afterwards and that's where everything kind of fell apart. So I buy that I think this is what Joe Burrow wants. I don't think Joe I don't think Joe Burrow wants to be the bad guy to NFL fans because I think he understands what a leap you take out there if you do something like that. And then I think to Sean Watson is this signal for everyone. If you if you do it and then you don't land the plane, you become one of the most hated people in the NFL. Yeah, I mean, listen, I understand there's obviously there's stones attached to that making that move and pissing off a whole entire fan base and I think he's got to be happy. They went out and got extra warrants. I got you out of the now and they reworked that defensive line. But something's got to change after this year if he doesn't get the job done. And so I guy if I'm Joe Burrow, if I was just advising Joe Burrow, I you got to you got to accept the idea you might piss off fans and Cincinnati, but you can't continue to miss the postseason three straight years. You then make it four straight years of not making the postseason and you can look at that cheap franchise and how they're scouting department is essentially two guys in a broom closet.

3:01Like I you just you got to get somewhere else if that's the case. So I think I think the discrepancy here is I don't think Joe cares about the the Dirt of Scouts. I don't think Joe cares about a limited coaching staff. I think he looks at it and goes, did you trade for Dexter Lawrence? Yes or no? Did you sign Orlando Brown or trade for Orlando Brown and send him to a contract extension? Did you pay my wide receivers? I think from that standpoint every time he's he's applied pressure to them, they have responded with some sort of move. Like I understand if Joe I disagree because I think they could have done more, but I can understand if Joe looks at this and says, well, I asked for things they gave them to me. Now let's see if they can work out. Yeah, I just feel like his thinking is going to eventually turn into, man, I'm really just putting the whole entire organization on my back. And there's other organizations you can go to. You can go to the Rams, let's say. And all of a sudden Sean McVeigh is top-notch. Let's need his top-notch. They're spending money handover fist. They have defense, a defense that is built up with so many different players. They have offensive weapons that always replenish

4:01because McVeigh is one of the very best. Like there's so many different ways that you can make your football life easier. And Ohio Joe is just made it incredibly hard on himself. I just think especially when it comes to quarterback, that's the one spot. That's what made DeShan Watson. So unique five years ago is this just doesn't happen. Franchise quarter. Guys that are unanimously agreed to be top five quarterbacks. They like something dramatic has to happen to cause the schism that for especially now where you're going to get your 55 to 65 to 75 million dollars a year no matter where you go. Isn't missing the playoffs for four straight years dramatic though? Like that. I will get missing the playoffs for four straight years. I've just had to have the time. I mean, yeah, you could point to his injuries for sure. And I think that would be one great response back is like where's Joe's ownership of all this as well. But if I was Joe, I'd look at it as easier to just go get me in a more stable place with the better head coach with and just kind of make that work and give myself new

5:01scenery. Do the Matthew Stafford. Get myself new scenery and give myself an easy existence instead of trying to work so hard and Cincinnati. I think if you're the Bengals, you can look back and say we've done more to support you and we ever did Carson Palmer and certainly what we did for Andy Dolan. They're not wrong, but is that support enough? Is that is that anywhere close to the stratosphere that some of these other teams could offer up? And for Joe, you'd have to tell yourself there's a lot of other teams out there that could just make your life a lot easier. Yeah, but you're comparing them to the Kremlin, a very aggressive teams that are backed by super ownership. I put what the what the Bengals have done to support Joe up against what the Cowboys have done to give Dak Prescott a better chance to win every other year like, hey, a Mari Cooper really, but Dak can't just they traded in for because they didn't want to pay him. Same thing with Mike apart from is the Dak can't force his hand that same way. He's not perceived to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He's very good, but he's not perceived to be the Joe Burrow level like Joe is at a spot where if he's if he gets moved and if he gets if he wants out, this isn't this isn't going to be for some

6:03Ragtag operation. Like he's going to go to the Kremlin. They like Kremlin that we're talking about. So comparatively he has to look at it relative to what he's currently being offered and what he can be off. I think Joe burrow is proving it. I think he's proven the point that he doesn't have the Cahonis. He doesn't have whatever it whatever you think it takes to force your way to Cincinnati. I think he's proved that for the last three years. He could have exercised that power at any point. And honestly, this is a we'll see it play out thing, but I think if he was going to do it, I think last year's the year that should have broken. They screwed around Trey Hendrixen, which certainly impacted where that defense was anyways. They didn't they haven't drafted well enough. They've allowed starters to walk off and not be replaced and replenished. Certainly on the defensive side of the ball year in, year out. I think if if Joe was going to do it this last offseason made the most amount of sense. And then they went out and they traded for Dexter Lawrence and they added boy Mafe and they added a couple other pieces that I think. Again, I think I think they really sat tight in offseason ago where he was allowed to be pissed.

7:06I don't think he's allowed to be I'm not allowed. He ever is allowed to. But I don't think he has a leg to stand on with the I mean, you thought he should have already been broke by the organization. And I missing the playoffs won't do anything to help that. And well, no, I mean, I think if last year didn't break him how that went down when he was healthy for a part of that season. Yeah, I don't I don't know what's going to be worse than last year. I think I think it's adding is probably upset more than anything, but I think you're just adding on. I think I don't think Joe wanted the realization or was coming to the realization that Cincinnati is not the best spot for him. I think when they went to the Super Bowl in year two, he looked at it like, wow, I can go here all the time. This is fantastic. I just let's do this a lot. And obviously you wake up four years later and that's just not the case for him. 216 474 0092. Joe Burrow says he's not going anywhere doing the old wolf a wall street in fairness. Yannis did that like the deadline and then ended up going and saying something about. Yeah, we just don't see it. This is just this is kind of what just athletes do sometimes.

8:06That's the NBA versus the NFL. The NFL specific quarterback. Deshaun's really the only guy can think of at that level. Miles Garrett though did that same song and dance too. That's an ad rusher every there's like five players that to which they are endlessly valued. And you simply cannot trade them in any way in a discord or backs. I think you meant the idea that they were talking about to like I'm not going anywhere and then going anywhere. We're talking quarterback exclusively trades and we got to go back to the Matthew Stafford one. But again Detroit treated treated Matthew Stafford way worse than what Joe Burrow was being treated at in Cincinnati. But ultimately if he if he once he starts realizing he's not being treated or not being considered to be a top five quarterback in the sport anymore. And I think missing the playoffs for four straight years people will start to get hit to that. I think that's when you're going to start and we you're going to start to see Joe break a little bit. Now I did put my AFC North predictions out on Nick talk and I will tell you actually the only thing I think they can actually sink the bangles this year from being a playoff team is Joe Burrow's health.

9:07I think the defense is going to be good enough. I don't think it's going to be great. But I think it's going to be good enough. And I think if you have a the 17th best defense. With that offense, I think it's a like just calm them down for 10 wins and don't even question. Well, so this is the other side of this right? Since an ad he does have a great season. Then that would all but basically lock up Joe Burrow until the end of time in Cincinnati. You know, then we got 10 more years of him in Cincinnati. That's why this season. So it just matters so much. I think if you want to make the case that it falls on Joe Burrow remaining healthy. I think that's a strong case to make like there's been people that have wondered if Joe Burrow gets injured this year. Would the bangles be wise to trade Joe Burrow for the number one overall pick whoever has that. You know, like like that idea of what is what is actually going to give you more in return somebody that has been injured then for three out of four years. Or someone that you could pay archmannings right there. Let's draft him instead. And you could dangle Joe Burrow to the jets. Let's say and with the jets taken or not. 10:10Whether the Browns are getting a motivated to Sean Watts in this year and expectations for week one against Jacksonville in five minutes on 92 through the fan. Oh my gosh. You guys are right. I'm here all year, but thank goodness we have some real football to talk about coming up here. Well, that's where we're going to start talking about to Sean Watts in a reasonable expectations for to Sean on Sunday against Jacksonville.

11:13Yeah, I think that's what's hard to kind of predict right now and for me, I think the hardest part is just how is he going to look after these, you know, multiple season ending injuries that he had suffered. You know, I think it's not just coming back from the two Achilles. It's the fact that he's working his way back from a shoulder injury that he suffered in 2023. That is pretty rare. I mean, so rare that at the time we couldn't find another quarterback that had suffered this specific kind of fracture. So I mean, I think right now the most realistic expectations for him knowing that are doing the game management sort of stuff. It would be like what we saw in Chicago for that two series of action that he got in that first preseason game. It's important. I think to not turn the football over. That's the most important part of managing the game. But I don't know exactly where fans should place their expectations, but I think for me, that would be considered a decent enough outing for him as they go this route and he works his way back.

12:17Deshaun was asked about that Buffalo game and in fact, he kind of seemed like he forgot about the Buffalo game for a second there. And then it is like, oh, yeah, the bill's game. Does that kind of speak to the Browns job and how they've done this where they've just tried to make him have goldfish memory and just kind of forget everything that happened. Is that even possible with someone like Deshaun and how bad that was two weeks ago? Yeah, I mean, I think so. I took it as genuinely he was confused for a second as someone who was standing right there in that scrum when they said Buffalo game. He's like what Buffalo game? You know, they played the bills a couple of times in recent years. So I think he genuinely didn't understand what he was being asked about, but I do think it kind of illustrated the mindset that Todd Monkin wants with these guys. But look, I do think it's an interesting question of if the guy like Deshaun was incapable of that. We're going to have to wait and see because obviously that outburst after that Buffalo game and that press conference was certainly significant. And I think it's not going to be the first adversity key bases from other fan bases or even his own fan base. It's a weird situation.

13:23It's a lot for a guy to have to put in the back of his mind, but I do think that mental challenge part of it is also going to be key to his season. If he's able to hang on to the starting job, there's a lot he's going to have to contend with. So it's easy to talk about having a goldfish memory and even forgetting today, you know, he's not had to play in a game since then. I do think like I said, it was genuine, but there's been some space from that moment. So what's this going to be like week after week? And if he is still getting pushed back, especially from his own fans, I think that's just an unknowable thing right now, but definitely something to keep an eye on. Ashley, outside of quarterback, what are you most intrigued or most interested to see on Sunday from the Browns? Oh, well, I think on the offensive side of the ball and most intrigued to see how this offensive line holds up. I mean, it's kind of flown under the radar kind of not the fact that this team has five new starters on its offensive line. They have a rookie left tackle in Spencer, Fano will see if they also have a rookie guard in in Austin, Barbara.

14:31If you can make this late push here, or if it'll be Kevin Jenkins and that would leave Spencer as the long rookie. So I think to me, if they can have success as an offense and if they can score points and be explosive so much is going to rest on this new line and how they look together. So that for me is one of the biggest keys and on the other side of the ball, I'll have to give you guys two. The other big key is what's this defense going to look like post miles Garrett and Jim Schwartz. It's a very broad question. I think we have some idea. We know it's going to be an attack front. I think there's a lot of mystery still in the secondary. And I think production wise, they're going to have to obviously make up some sacks with no more miles here. So those are the couple of things that I'm very, very curious about and watching outside of the quarterback situation. All right, Ashley, maybe you can help me. I just feel like I don't understand Tom Bucking sometimes. Todd comes out and starts this whole thing about tailing green potentially being the backup quarterback and gives life to that and gives air to that. And then today is like, yeah, should our Sanders at the backup quarterback?

15:33Yeah, you know what? I do think it's not coincidence that he says that on Wednesday when I'm assuming the Jaguars have done most of their game planning already. That's kind of the cycle of life cycle of a game week. You do most of those things on Monday and Tuesday. So he gave them a little something extra to think about today, but what we're going to have to ask Todd on Friday, because what wasn't in that answer about should or being the backup and he that's what he anticipates. And obviously, you know, should or Sanders is number two on the depth chart. He didn't say if tailing green would fill possibly be active. And if he would have a package of plays. And I'm curious if they'll answer that or if that's not an answer, we're going to get until 90 minutes before pick up when they release their an actives. But I mean, I do think I took it as a head coach is going to go for any competitive advantage they can find. And if he disrupted the Jaguars early week trap, even a little bit, it was probably worth it for him. All right, actually, Denzel Ward announced to say minority owner of the Guardians today. And there's been a lot of debate over what you actually get out of that.

16:39I have rather selflessly offered if the Guardians want to give me, let's say $500,000 worth of ownership. It's very noble of neck. I will do that to open up a new avenue of celebrity local celebrity part time owners. Or sorry, partial owners as it were, call part time owners would be part time very myself. What does Denzel Ward get out of his minority ownership? Yeah, I think I'm really curious to see what this looks like if it will be kind of along the lines of what we saw with Miles Garrett in the cab that he sort of was this fun face. He got to sit courtside. He's obviously like promoting a little bit what they're doing. So I do kind of wonder if that's the same thing for Denzel Ward on top of what sound like is a lot of sentimental value for him in owning the childhood baseball team that he grew up watching being part of that ownership group now. I thought today when we talked to him that was kind of cool to see him reflect in real time when he got asked like,

17:40did you ever envision owning any part of any sports franchise and he said that was something that never really crossed his mind that he wasn't thinking that big. But now he is. So I do think like the Guardians get some cool promotion from a guy who is very much embedded in the city. Denzel Ward gets to be a part of that we know he loves Cleveland. You love Northeast Ohio. He grew up here. He wins in Nordonia, win. Ohio State. So I just think it's kind of a cool story all around and I do think it's mutually beneficial for sure. Nick is locked in is Jacksonville lost this weekend. He thinks the Browns take game one. I normally I'll give you time actually you can think about it a little bit more. But this has also been like six month lead up so for maybe just this week. Have you already given your prediction to Cleveland.com and if not can we hear it guys. I have not picked this game yet. So I will I will give you a prediction you're putting me on the spot. I haven't thought about it. But you know, I think I'm just going to go with my gut and I'm going to pick the Browns in this game.

18:46I think people are you know the Jaguars I know I was looking for my own purposes yesterday and I know the Jaguars this week are a popular survivor pool pick along with the Chargers as they take the Cardinals. But I'm going to go with the Browns. I do think they have you know some competitive advantage and no one really knows what this defense is going to look like. How Mike Routenberg is going to call a defense. I think that's going to help them. I'm kind of relying on some Dishon Watson vintage performance against the Jaguars. He's trying to go eight know against them for his career here. He's never lost. He's very familiar with ever been field. So I think maybe this offense with the rookies to have the chance to surprise some people. So I am going to pick the Browns for right now. I'm going to say weird is scored 26 to 24. 26 I will take 26. Now is does that involve a safety in there somewhere or like a missed extra point?

19:49Yeah, maybe let's go with the mixed extra point that they did a missed extra point. They did have a safety. Of course the last time they played there, but Alex right won't be on the field to try to do that again. So it's a tough ask I think Ashley. What do you consider to be the Browns X factor in 2026? Oh, the Browns X factor. You know, I'm going to go with if they can get defensive production without miles Garrett. I think especially that production up front to me. That's so important. So just because this defense has been elite really for the large majority of the last three years, they've led the NFL in numerous statistical categories in that time frame and losing miles Garrett is a big deal. Right. And you're going to need to be able to successfully get to the quarterback. And I think give a young offense some breathing room. So that to me is very, very important for this teams offense. If the defense can sustain some semblance of the production they were at over the last three years.

20:53You know, it's funny. Monkin was talking about him doing the like the intro before the game and trying to get everyone fired up. And then he was he was saying to himself. He's like, well, I want to I was trying to figure out what hardball does, but I was always in. I went up to the box so I never really saw what hardball does and I was asking what hardball does. And then I was thinking about the team captain side of things where he did the same thing that the Ravens did last year. Only a couple teams in the NFL do where they go week by week instead. And I just a part of me wonders. Are we getting a little bit too much of a hardball clone. So to speak. I do feel like Monkins maybe adopting too much from hardball. If that's even such a thing. I don't think so. I don't I honestly don't really think it's that much of a thing. And I do think John Harbohne is a great coach. So it's unsurprising. He's had a ton of influence on the guy who was his coordinator the last three years and who he wanted to be his off and support in. I'm a coordinator in New York. So I don't think it's too much like John Harbohne, but that just maybe I'm just being too nice to John Harbohne. I'm sure some Raven fans over the last few years would have some things to say about that and some of the decisions those two made together.

21:55But I think there are worse people to emulate for sure. Actually, I can't recall a few follow me on TikTok at Nick Wilson says, Nick talk. I did put out my division predictions today. And at the bottom, the bottom of my predictions, it seems to be where I've incensed the most amount of people. Brown's fans are furious that I've called for this to be an eight nine eight nine team, whereas Steelers fans are furious that I have them at seven and 10. So I will ask you, what is the hotter take the Browns are eight nine or the Steelers at seven and 10? I mean, maybe I'm just too close to the Brown side of things, but I do feel like the Browns at eight nine is the hotter take like I've said on here before that eight wins is kind of my feeling for this team right now that everything we've seen. I think that means everything's going right. You're getting really serviceable quarter back play. Your lines are staying healthy. All of those things.

22:59No, we had Ashley Wilson on board here. We're going to week one win eight wins my goodness. I didn't swear I didn't watch Nick's TikTok either. So I've been put on the spot here today and we're just I don't know thinking along the same lines, I guess, but I think the Browns at eight wins is a very very not take. I mean, the biggest line hasn't at five and a half still, I think. So how can that not be the hotter take imitation is this sincerest form of flattery. I heard that somewhere once. Yeah. All right, Ashley great stuff. We appreciate you. I excited to have football back and excited to keep talking about it all football season long. All right, thanks guys. I'm going to say last weekend last week, rather, we really went off the rails at the end of the Ashley interview. We pulled it together for the regular season opener. We're getting near near the regular season going, you know, and I like that's when you got to lock in. I mean, this is if not now, then when we probably won't walk in. I almost got him to agree to let me on his podcast. And then he went away for the offseason. And then it just it. I thought you guys had hooked up about that. I thought he was saying that you could like 100% beyond the podcast. I did. And then then he's not following through. I mean, he went away for like he was the offseason. There was no need to have me on. Right. So he's going to have you on once the season gets going. I think the moment's been lost. But we will I will bird dog Ross in about 15 minutes. He's pretty down on this Brown's team. So we'll talk about that as well. But a little Gardo's news here. I chased a lot of back in the lineup for the first time. And I was at four games now. He's in the two spot. And this is everything's coming together with this lineup.

26:11The rotation shambles the bullpen your guests on any night is as good as mine. The lineup is coming together since the deadline because Nathaniel Low is your six hitter tonight. In a world. And I don't know. Dells are clean up it when like when when Nathaniel who I can only describe as a professional ball player. Right. Meet meets Plummer. But that guy when that guy's your six hitter in Cleveland. Like three months ago, he would have been like your two hitter for the love of God. I'm it's slight hyperbole there, but good to see CDL back. It's nice to have CDL back. The lineup that just misses him. It's different without him in it. And Bessana heating up call now. Bessana has been incredible. Seven for 14 over the last four games. He's at a home run and an RBI in multiple games. He's at least an RBI and an extra base hit in every one of them. Like he started to ever since people on the station called him out. He has responded nicely. Well, it's not just that. There's a couple guardians accounts. Like either guys that follow him, you know, minor league ball or guys that are just like guardian stands.

27:13And that just don't like him. Didn't like him as number one pick. Didn't like him. I've mentioned Nick Kurtz. Have mentioned JJ Weatherhold. I mentioned all these other guys and the success they've had. And every time they start dogging him because, you know, guardians guardians bloggers, guardians fans are very cautious about going too hard at some of the young guys. But what as soon as they creep up on him and like say he shouldn't have been the number one pick. He flips the switch and all of a sudden he looks like a damn all star again. Yeah. Love every second. We needed it right now. It's a good time for him to get hot. Now Ashley Bastak joined us in the previous segment. Great stuff from her. Here is her week one prediction for the Cleveland Browns. You know, I think I'm just going to go with my gut and I'm going to go with the Browns. I do think they have, you know, some competitive advantage. And no one really knows what this defense is going to look like. How Mike Rutenberg is going to call a defense. I think that's going to help them. I'm kind of relying on some Dishon Watson vintage performance against the Jaguar. He's trying to go eight and no against them for his career here. He's never lost.

28:16There's very familiar with Everbank field. So I think maybe this offense with the rookies too has a chance to surprise some people. So I am going to pick the Browns for right now. I'm going to say weird as score 26 to 24. I am oddly confident in an offensive line. We haven't seen play together on regular season game. I don't even know who the hell the right guards going to be. And I'm oddly confident that they're going to be at least functional this this Sunday. And I think this, I think the element of surprise is here. And I'm going to be really fascinated if the Browns pull out a close win as actually suggesting 26 to 24. I'm going to be really interested just to see what that does for people. Even if Dishon doesn't play a good game. Her arc though had Dishon being vintage Dishon. That I think is the wild card of wild cards. I just blacked that one out. Okay. Yeah. Because that was a girl base on that was vintage. We see a vintage Dishon Watson game. She may vintage Cleveland. Because that one I think we can't expect. The appropriate follow up that did not happen in that interview was the where you get that from actually.

I think when it comes to Dishon during the ball down the field or certainly throwing the ball between the the hash mark.

But I do I do have a good inclination. This was a confidence building exercise for Dishon Watson. I just think they worked it. Seaped in the Ashley. I think the I think the swing here from how the Browns look in a win on Sunday and how they looking to loss.

31:24I don't listen. We all do week. Certainly every week has its over reactions. And certainly for the Browns, we do a lot of week one over reactions. I don't know. I don't know. There's a bigger swing that can possibly be had for how I think you're going to see people flip on Dishon Watson in the Browns like you wouldn't believe if they win 26 to 24. And I think Monday is going to be people saying see. I see and I don't I'm not talking about Browns fans. I'm talking about media guys who right now are walking the line of. Well, listen, I believe the Todd Monkett believes in Dishon Watson. I don't believe in Dishon Watson. You're the biggest Watson warriors out there. Just own it. Pull off the Jersey. All right. Let's see in that number four. Yeah. Cowards, but they're going to be there on Monday. And I think they're going to be people nationally that also do the same thing. Whereas if Dishon looks like a broken toy or gets benched or gets hurt in this game and the Browns lose, they're going to say, well, look at what Vegas did. Of course, this team is never going to win a game, which by the way, they should be in this game.
