German backpacker's 11-day outback survival ordeal

For the first time, she's spoken of the ordeal, telling seven news how she thought she was going to die. Europe correspondent Ben Downey has the exclusive interview. This green pocket of Western Germany couldn't be further from the inhospitable Outback. Karolina Vilger got herself lost in a little over a year ago, but it's the childhood memory she forged here that she credits as giving her the strength to continue as she was lost in the middle of Western Australia. Crashing her fan last July on the dirt road, the 27-year-old reveals to us an interview for the first time. She struck her head, only regaining full consciousness hours later finding she'd walked in the days from her vehicle and from safety. After three days, she found to find her way back to the van facing more brutally cold nights. She admits

1:03she thought she was going to die and never see her parents again. At some point, I lost hope. For me, it was clear I'm going to die, but the way I'm dying was super painful. It would be another nine days before she was found delirious, frostbitten and overjoyed. Then you stumble upon Tanya in the Outback. What was that like? She hucked me and it was this what I needed all the time, like what I was just wishing for. She at first didn't recognize the woman staring back at her when she encountered the first mirror after her ordeal, but now she's a far greater sense of who she is and what a source of strength the thought of family can be.
