Good evening and thanks so much for joining us on this busy Sunday. I'm Rachel Scott in for Lindsey Davis. We do begin tonight with that breaking news, the frightening scene on the runway. An Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway, crashed and caught fire.

3:02Several people killed several others injured. This all happening at Miami International Airport. The plane striking multiple vehicles before bursting into flames. The FAA declaring a ground stop more than 80 flights have now been diverted. The aircraft resting on its belly on that runway. That plane had arrived from San Juan Puerto Rico. Authorities have now set up a hotline for family members of the victim seeking information. ABC's Melissa Don leads us off tonight with the breaking details just coming in. Tonight with millions traveling for Labor Day, an Amazon operated cargo plane over shooting the runway at Miami International Airport, killing five people and injuring five others. My heart is with all of the families who were affected and to everyone who is grieving tonight. The FAA saying that around two o'clock, a Boeing 767-300 arriving from San Juan Puerto Rico over ran the runway at MIA. A video showing the Scorched 767 stopped in a field just outside a parking lot.

4:07It's nose touching the ground. Sixty firefighters racing to the scene. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue saying the plane struck multiple vehicles and then caught fire. That's crazy. The FAA declaring a ground stop more than 80 flights diverted so far. Amazon today saying they're working to support those affected. This comes during a busy travel weekend amid severe weather impacts. Millions expect to hit the road on top of those in the air. The price of gas up nearly $1 on average from last year. More than $4 a gallon. The highest ever on Labor Day. Those costs being driven up by the war in Iran. The price of gas up to $1.50 since the war started. It's a big deal. Rachel preliminary reports indicate that plane was traveling at nearly 130 miles when it went off the runway at MIA. And officials tell us that the ground stop in Miami is now over but delays are expected to last through early tomorrow morning. And the NTSB is now sending a team to investigate the incident. Rachel.

5:08A tragic story on this Labor Day weekend. We turn now to the powerful storms disrupting holiday travel this weekend. The southeast is facing another round of severe thunderstorms. Rain and thunderstorms battered North Carolina on Saturday. And parts of the southwest, bracing for more dangerous flash flooding like the deadly disaster and the Grand Canyon. So we want to get right to WAPC meteorologist Danny Bextram. And Danny, where exactly is this storm heading next? We're starting in the southeast. For the second day in a row, we are looking at that severe threat. The damaging wing us, our primary concern, tonight through midnight South Carolina and Georgia looking at the threat for severe storms. Now to that flash flood threat in the southwest. Look at all the national parks in this area. It's a holiday weekend. We're concerned because of all the people we know are right here. Flooding downpours can prompt flash flooding tonight. That range shifts from New Mexico to the Dakotas tomorrow. Most of the country is actually quiet. Great news for traveling home from the holiday. Some storms in the Gulf Coast and rough surf along the California coast. We're also watching Hurricane Low really closely. Track still takes it west of the islands, but impacts for Hawaii through Monday and Tuesday.

6:09Heavy rain and of course the high surf as well. Yeah, we know so many people on alert there. Okay, Danny. Thank you. We want to turn now to the other breaking news out of Ohio. Campaign officials say multiple people were injured after an armed person lunged at the Democratic candidate for governor, Dr. Amy Acton. So let's bring in ABC's Andrew Dimbert. Andrew, what more are you learning about this tonight? Well, Rachel, we have some breaking developments in Ohio's race for governor. We have a very important announcement that will be held by Amy Acton's campaign that while attending the Canfield fair. An armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton who is running against the VEK Ramaswami for governor in Ohio. Multiple people have been injured according to Amy Acton's campaign. Her team also out with a statement tonight saying, quote, this kind of violence has no place in Ohio. And thanking law enforcement for their swift reaction. The VEK Ramaswami's campaign also saying today, quote, what happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics. Will of course be following this developing situation as it unfolds. Yeah, we certainly will both sides condemning this tonight. Andrew, thank you.

7:10Overseas now to the high stakes piece mission. U.S. envoy Steve Whitkopf and Jared Kushner meeting with Ukraine's president Zelinsky today. They're looking to revive negotiations to end the war after being stalled for months. This follows a three hour long meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin and Moscow on Saturday. Here's ABC's Marcus Moore. After weeks of relentless Russian attacks across Ukraine and its capital, a brief ceasefire. As U.S. special envoy Steve Whitkopf and Jared Kushner arrived for talks with Ukraine's president Zelinsky. The three meeting for more than four hours today discussing the latest proposal for peace, which hasn't been made public, and security guarantees as Ukraine braces for another winter assault. Whitkopf and Kushner traveled from Moscow where they met with Vladimir Putin Saturday. The talks described as substantive and constructive. Whitkopf hinted at a possible trilateral meeting between Ukraine, Russia and the U.S. that could see a resolution. President Putin, thank you so much for having us. We were all talking about when we retire, we'll have all these incredible stories and incredible memories, and yours will be right at the top.

8:18But tonight, without a deal, peace remains a distant memory in Ukraine and now in Iran. As a new wave of strikes this weekend targets vessels in the Strait of Hormuz prompting escalating threats. The U.S. hitting three Iranian tankers in the strait and one near Karg Island. Iran calling the strikes a war crime and retaliated by targeting U.S. ships and oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. There may not be a nuclear agreement. It may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it. An agreement may wait a next administration in Iran. We simply don't know that. And Rachel, none of this will help in the effort to bring down fuel prices that Americans and people all over the world are feeling some of those prices. Now at record highs while ordinary Iranians are also facing deep financial hardship, Rachel. Okay, Marcus. Thank you. Back here in the U.S. the Illinois mom now charged with murder of her two-year-old son, witnesses told investigators she had become very invested in the Lindsey Clancy case. Her attorney says she was suffering from a psychotic episode more now from ABC's Olivia Rubin.

9:19Tonight, this 40-year-old mother of four charged with murdering her own son. After witnesses say she became very invested in the high profile Lindsey Clancy murder case. Illinois prosecutors say Corey Walsh was actively discussing that case in text messages with friends just hours before police discovered the gruesome scene. Prosecutors say Walsh said she killed her two-year-old son, Barrett, because he was the devil and the anti-Christ before trying to take her own life with a knife, all as the jury deliberated in the Clancy trial. We are unable to come to a unanimous decision. Clancy accused of strangling her three children in cold blood before trying to take her own life with a knife. The grueling seven-week trial ending with a death-locked jury. Prosecutors now weighing whether to bring her to trial once again. Children were murdered and it's our job to see justice. Clancy's defense team saying there was one holdout juror and if there's a second trial, they'll prevail.

10:21Where would I? I won the case. The defense said Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and never got the help she desperately needed. The case dividing the country and igniting a debate about mental health struggles faced by so many women. Will you come show your support again if there is a second trial? Absolutely. I would like to support her. And Rachel, tonight Walsh's attorney says she was suffering from a psychotic episode at the time. She's now doing court this upcoming week and asked for Lindsay Clancy while she's due back in court at the end of the month and in the meantime, her attorney says she's waiting out these next steps at a state-run psychiatric facility nearby. Rachel. Olivia, thank you. But the midterm just two months away, tonight President Trump is making a last minute appeal to the Supreme Court to restrict mail-in voting. At least one swing state has already sent out ballots and others will soon follow. Because ABC Steve important to win. Tonight with just eight weeks to go until the midterms, the Trump administration is taking its case on mail-in ballots to the nation's highest court.

11:25Mail-in voting means mail-in cheating. I call it mail-in cheating. Experts say examples of fraudulent voting by mail are exceedingly rare. And there's no evidence that fraudulent mail-in ballots have affected the outcomes of recent national elections. But the administration at this late date is now urging the justices to allow the postal service to impose new rules, governing how ballots are sent out via the mail. That is absentee ballots have already gone out in North Carolina. They're set to go out in Alabama later this week and in several more states by the end of next week. President Trump ordered the postal service to make changes in March. He's repeatedly cast doubt on the security of voting by mail, even as it's something he's done repeatedly himself. Because of the fact that in President of the United States, I did a mail-in ballot for elections that took place in Florida. The new rules the administration is pushing would require states to upload the names and addresses of approved voters to a postal service portal. But a whistleblower claims that system has been hastily thrown together without proper testing. The anonymous insider also alleges issues with barcodes on new standardized envelopes could lead to entire batches of ballots not being delivered on time.

12:33In a statement, USPS says it spent months developing the portal, which it says is part of a broader effort, quote, to ensure that election mail and ballots are handled and delivered securely, reliably and efficiently. Now, these new postal service rules have been blocked by a federal judge in Massachusetts who has said the Constitution gives states the power to run elections. Even as ballots are being prepped for mailing right now all across the country. The administration urges the Supreme Court to step in and allow the new rules to take effect. Rachel? We'll see if the Supreme Court weighs in, okay, Stephen, thank you. Now to the tragedies at the Burning Man. Authorities are investigating a second death at the popular festival this weekend. All of this follows a murder that is still unsolved from last year. Here's ABC's Alex Stone. Tonight investigators in the remote desert of Nevada, north of Reno, hunting for answers after two men died at the Burning Man festival in the last week. Around 3 p.m. Saturday, the victim now identified as 60-year-old Craig Mann was found dead by his campmates.

13:33It comes just days after a 50-year-old man suffered a medical emergency and was pronounced dead at the festival's care center. This marks the fifth death in four years at Black Rock City, the festival site that appears like a mirage attracting tens of thousands for art and music. Just last year the festival investigated its first murder, a 37-year-old Russian tourist found in a pool of blood. The case remains unsolved, investigators say partly because a temporary city disappears when the festival ends, making it difficult to find clues to crimes. Anybody has any any investigate of knowledge. If you could imagine the worst case scenario for an investigation, that is it. And Rachel, tonight investigators tell me they're trying to better understand the two latest deaths at Burning Man, but it does not appear foul play was involved. Rachel. Alex, thank you. Now to the thrilling matches at the US Open. The Americans looking for a spot in the quarterfinals and the teen sensation making history tonight. Here's ABC's Morgan Norwood.

First it was Paradise, California. The catastrophic campfire ripping through the small rural town in Northern California in 2018. Five years later, about 2500 miles away, tragedy hitting LaHina, a devastating wildfire killing more than 100 people, destroying over 2000 structures. Last night, those two communities brought together through high school football. The LaHina Luna's and the Paradise Bobcats meeting on the field, and what they called the Unity Bowl.

21:52The theme, two towns, one spirit. This game means a lot to us. We've been through the same thing, lost shelter, lost lots of homes. The game has a special meaning. It symbolizes for both teams that resiliency, even though the fire did come through, we didn't give up and we're striving forward. The school's photographer says it shows the power sports has to connect community. What these two communities are doing today is showing what sports can do and kind of bring people together to make things a little bit light. Cheerleaders lining the field, fans packing the stands.
