First Ring Daily 2021: Apple Event Aftermath

0:00The spirit of new phones, post switched phones. So when someone says something about audio, it's because post switched phones. Well, the audio is probably more the problem from the earbuds, right? This is also different. Oh, that could be too. Yeah, I mean, I assume the video is okay, but I. Yeah, it's the long story. It's not worth telling. I'm sure it is. Yeah, I'm sure it is. And maybe there's something I could do to fix that, but I'm never I don't use these earbuds that much so I don't. Well, I could probably just use the Apple earbuds as this thing and probably work all right, but also not doing that for all the obvious reasons. Anyway. If you can't hear banging our booth is getting replaced. And if you cannot hear banging, then good. I wish I was you.

1:04Because this started at seven o'clock in the morning and. Yikes. Well. I've like a part over our place. We're getting quarantined or something. I got nothing other than the fold was exactly what we expected. And I have zero desired upgrade to the pro unless there's like some good, great deal or so. I don't know. That's fine. I will tell you I, I told first of all. I need to look at this a little bit more and I watch the event and everything, but I they did make some UI changes that were kind of unexpected, like moving the dock over the side and so forth. And that kind of gives you like a phones, shapes strip for the icons and stuff. And you're like, OK, well, you know, that's interesting. I, you know, this a muscle memory problems to that kind of change, but OK.

2:04I went through that event and I'm like, OK, great. I don't have to upgrade like this is a, this is good. Like I feel good about this. Later in the day, I saw a headline or whatever. I don't think I read the story, but just said something like Apple, like really boosted the trade in values this time. And I have to look at this again, but I, you know, like, I don't know, like my trade in a pixel for a year of year, pixel, you get six six hundred six fifty. I just said the app on the iPhone I have, I believe it was like eight hundred fifty or nine hundred, just something it was like, like it would all be stupid, not to upgrade even though I have zero desire in many ways. So I'm going to I have to look at it again. I don't, I'm not going to get it. I'm not going to get it near two. This is so stupid. Like I'm not going to get a fold. And I just getting you get another pro maximum, like I don't know, like what's the point. I don't.

3:04The one thing that I need to look at a little closer to is they kept saying, the fold, like just it just fits in your hand. To me, it looked very, if you have small hands, it's going to be a big problem. So yeah, I, I, the Wall Street Journal had a thing about that where the woman, it's, you know, she's a smaller Asian woman. She's like, this is not fit my hand at all, but I have small hands. So I has this guy work with and he has big hands. And he was like, yeah, no, this does not fit in your hand. And yeah, like you mean it like the, yeah, like when it's closed, yeah, because it's kind of oddly well, it's like a passport. I mean, yeah, like when it's like this. Right. Let me grab the black. I think it might be a little worse than that. I think it's legitimately worse than what I'm doing right here with the dude. I think it's wider and squatter. So, yeah. You know, like I, if you have a passport handy, you could kind of hold that, but the promise is not as thick. So, I think by the way, which is, you will be getting a lot of press in the end right side of the equation is this thing is thicker and heavier than every folding device that's made today.

4:10Like it's thicker than the pixel, which is not known to be, you know, one of the better ones in those regards. And these devices just do not appeal to me in this like this is the duo, even if this is smaller, like just one handed doom scrolling is not. It's too big like it's it's the, and I have bigger hands like it's legitimately too wide for me. Since you mentioned it like there's no better device for doom scrolling than a pixel. I mean, that surface. That makes it. I'm just saying I've got a duo of duos and I'm not going to buy another duos. Yeah, I don't, I don't know. I will say by the way, I'm not, I want to be super clear. I'm not saying like this thing is doomed. It's stupid. It doesn't make I'm not saying that at all. Like I, it's beautiful. They've done a great job of it. The UI stuff again. I have to look at it again. It's interesting. Yeah, that animation they have from when it you open it up to like kind of goes blurry and then pop like that. Yeah, that is pure. That is Apple at its best.

5:13Yeah, but I, yeah, I mean, there's some good stuff there, but I just keep coming back to this notion that I do not need this and I, or I, and having used several folding devices now, I don't really. I don't want it. Maybe. It's people will buy it and they will love it the same way they love their Apple Pro or Apple Vision Pro. And it'll be fine. I would be a bigger number of people. Yeah, well, that's the thing. That's hundreds of us. I mean, you know, well, it's only $2,000 or if you get the two terabyte model, it's like $3,200. It's like, yes. Oh, the hell would ever, you know, but nobody buys that device to get that much storage. If you, if you need that much storage, you want the cameras on the pro. And that's why you need that much storage, right? Like you don't, that doesn't make any sense at all. Yeah, getting it. Getting that storage on that device, right? Because it's like a 2x zoom thing. It's, you know, it's not very good. But that's not why you get it. Right. I mean, that's the kind of the point.

6:18I mean, I understand the appeal. It's just I don't think it's like a step change better than just the current iPhone. I really don't. You know, they're, they're trading kind of new territory here because their business model is based around you buying multiple devices, right? And it does seem that this thing could effectively replace. And I've had many. So if that happens to be the combination of or a combination of devices you have. They're not going to be able to get that. I mean, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, like we knew this was coming. It's not like yesterday arrived and it was a surprise. The one thing, you know, Apple. Apple has this kind of reputation for not coming out first with anything and then sort of perfecting a thing.

7:29And I feel like what they've done is they've waited a long time. I'm sure the folding crease things, the problem for a lot of it. And then they came up this thing, which is just the iPhone version of the thing we already have in the Android, which is fine. That audience should have that choice. But I just don't see that additional extra thing. It has the same kind of issues or whatever as you see on the end, it's like. And it's like we've been dealing with those on that side of the fence for years now. And it's like, well, it has the same problems. You know, for example, what do you do with an app that wasn't customized for that display form factor. It just displays in the middle of the screen like you do on an iPad. And it's like guys. This is almost 15 years later. This is still the solution. Now granted, Apple's developers are much more accommodating. So to speak like they will adapt to wraps. They all have these apps. You don't know what they are yet. That you know, or older, maybe haven't been updated on, you know, whatever it is. And it'll be those weird things. You know, that's just going to be part of it. I don't know.

8:38Somebody's going to be watching the video and ask what the hell does happen because I accidentally grabbed your video and moved it around. Because I was trying to do this. So you just describe it. Yes. So what you just when you said, this is a deep pool out of my neuron. This is fantastic. That if you have an iPad mini and a phone like this blends in like maybe this is the perfect device for you. What you just described is the Nissan Marano cross cabriolay, which is this. Okay. Which was an SUV and also a convertible. Yeah. That sold terribly for a lot of reasons. But it's like, you know, this is if you wanted a convertible and you wanted an SUV, this is what you could have bought. And yeah. So look, we don't have to get that's by the way, that device is incredibly ugly. Or that. Oh God, it was terrible. I think they sold nine units. Yeah, no, I'm the correct reaction is like, well, it's we went up and it's going to get to the capitated like what is this.

9:41But, you know, we don't have to go that you don't have to leave our industry. I mean, it's Tim Cook used to make kind of surface for the. Yeah, you know, you could combine it. I don't remember what he said at toaster and a. Post-average or whatever. Like, and whatever it was. And it doesn't mean anyone wants it, you know, and my reply to that at the time was, yeah, but you could also combine an oven and a microwave. And you could have lots of people want that. Or whatever, you know, so there are ways to do hybrid devices that may or may not make sense. I don't know. But, you know, one of the weird benefits of having different devices. And, you know, like, so I, you will travel, I will travel. You have a laptop. You might bring an iPad. You're going to have a phone as well. So you have three devices. You're like, why do you have three devices that silly. When you take the entertainment stuff off of the laptop, which is how it started. Or you take whatever else we do on phones or lap, you know, the battery life on that device is devoted to that thing. And so if you had like a phone and an iPad mini in this case, these are two devices.

10:42Yes, those little complexity there, but they both have their own battery too. So if you're out in the world, you're doing whatever it is. Like, you know, there's benefits to having both. I don't know. I'm not really sure. I don't know. I'm not saying this. I don't mean I want to be super clear. I'm not criticizing this thing. I, I'm, you know, it's new still. It's, you know, it's new, but we already have them elsewhere. So I'm trying to make sense of it. But I, you know, I think most people are going to say, I can't afford this. And I do not need it. And then there'll be some people who just have to have the whatever it is. The latest thing. If it's Apple, whatever. And I guess the trick is going to be. The long term here, you know, like, does this impact it? Do we not need an iPad mini anymore? Do we, you know, at some point, you know, when the iPhone started selling, they still had iPods. Then they had like an iPod touch and then the iPod went away. You know, is there a transition period here or, or does it be, it's not going to be as bad as Apple Vision Pro.

11:43It's not probably going to, well, I mean, is it going to, like, what about the iPad air or iPhone air? Does it? Yeah. What's the impact there? Like, do we? I feel like the iPhone iPhone become, you know, the iPhone air becomes like the normal iPhone, I guess, maybe it's the, but I feel like a. Somewhere is some, something is going to disappear at some point, right? There's like, we have. There's a lot in that category now. Yeah. So we can just send it. All we're doing is kind of talking through it. Like I, I'm. You know, you don't want to be too absolute here. Like this will kill this or something or this thing sucks and it's going away. It's okay. I don't really see that. I don't know. The biggest problem with it killing the iPad mini is the price. You mean, I don't know what you mean, like, like, go get this. An iPhone. Doo is too grand. Yeah. So what's an iPad mini cost like a three, four hundred bucks? Yeah. Well, I mean, a new iPhone. Well, I guess the cheapest iPhone is probably what eight nine air bucks. No.

12:45Like a realistic way. You're like a. Like the latest model, whatever. Yeah, I mean, it's less, of course it's less, but would you? I mean, how much? I don't know. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, look, if the camera thing managed to you at all, if that is, especially if it's job one, this doesn't make any sense. That might be why they're supporting the ability to have the same phone or bring two iPhones. If you think about it, like, which is a kind of a weird feature to have who needs this. Who has two phones? Well, it might be the apple enthusiast. But once the iPad mini thing or the iPhone, do. And, but also once the cameras in the pro. That is called the perfect customer. Yeah. And I'm doing everything I can to resist being that person because I feel like I've been apples per perfect customer for a few years now. And they really have not acknowledged it in any way. But, you know what, it's okay. I'm doing what I can for the stock price.

13:45Yeah. And then they team pros. Better camera and. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't see it. I listen, even something subtle with cameras is usually enough to make me really consider it right because that's super important to me. And I'm going to look, I'm going to rewatch this thing. I'm going to look at whatever materials they have. You know, I get a, I have to do it again like I was doing it, you know, like everyone else, they watched it, right. But like I, I don't know, I feel like. And I think that I saw anything even something subtle. They mentioned improving photographic styles, for example. But what about the UI. Did you improve that? Yeah. That thing is terrible. Like one of the best things about the new pixels is they their version of that. Which I think is called camera styles or something, whatever they call it, but is dramatically dramatically better than the photographic styles thing. I wish they would fix that. The duo doesn't come out until next month.

14:46And then the 18 pro is like next week or this were Friday or something like that. So. Yeah, I don't think they can make enough of these things. I think that they're, they're only making like hundreds a day according to some report that just came out like they can't, they're not reaching the quality level they need. I don't know. They really don't know.
