That is Wella with the world baseball classic edition of the Rico Bronia. Episodes number 650. A mere minutes after Venezuela puts the nail in the US coffin, it was a very frustrating game. And it had this incredibly epic moment with Price Harper. And I'll explain how I actually did have some mixed emotions on the Price Harper moment, but it was so quickly forgotten. So quickly did Garrett Whitlock throw it away. And Venezuela retakes the lead and the US bats which really did nothing throughout this game and did nothing against the Dominican Republic

3:05and was mostly quiet against Canada. Well, it ends without a peep as Roman Anthony strikes out. Daniel Polencia lays down on the mound and Venezuela gets to celebrate the world baseball classic. There's a lot of thoughts about this game and a lot of thoughts about how I feel in this moment and the truth is, and I think I said this before leading into it. In this moment, I feel okay. Like this is not a met loss. You know what I mean? Like I'm sitting there and I'm invested in it. I think we all are to a degree. I scored the whole game. Here's my beautiful scorecard. If you want to take a look and you're consuming on YouTube. But as Roman Anthony struck out. I was very matter of fact like, we tried. That didn't work out. Congratulations to Venezuela. Congratulations to all their fans and the excitement they had from this tournament winning their first world baseball classic championship. But yeah, I think the emotions of the WBC is that it's a really cool tournament.

4:09I want the United States to win. But if they lose, I will go to sleep just fine. And I'm pretty sure that after this Rico Bronia's over, I will be able to do that. Now, let's get to a few things. So Bryce Harper comes to the plate with two outs and a run around in the eighth inning in a game in which the US offense. And I use this term a lot here on the Rico to describe the bets. I'll borrow it to describe the United States lineup. This was an LD offense. I mean, this was as limp as you will see put this in perspective. Do you know how many times the United States had a runner in scoring position in this entire game? The answer is zero. Not one time. They let Eduardo Rodriguez mold them down into the fifth thing. They couldn't do anything against this Venezuelan bullpen, including old friend, Jose Buto. And then you had this absolutely out of nowhere moment featuring Bryce Harper.

5:14Right after we saw the cardinal sin by Andres Machado of walking Bobby Whit Jr. on four pitches with a two run lead and two outs and nobody on and Bryce Harper and Aaron Judge coming up. I mean, you cannot do that with a two run lead and two outs and nobody on in the eighth inning. But even when Machado walked with on the four pitches, I just didn't think Bryce was going to do it. I got to be honest with you. I didn't even think about it. Like as Bryce came up, my thought was Kenny. He draw a walk, bring up Aaron judge in another big spot. And he'll probably strike out again. And Aaron had a awful world baseball classic final, which will get into it a few minutes. But when Bryce on that one, I was hoping to pound it at the center field. I thought off the bat. Holy shit. Wow. Bryce Harper is about to give us this epic moment. And it really was the crowd reaction. You started to hear the USH and the Bryce reaction shot. I thought was perfect. He didn't dance.

6:15He watched it. He did an incredible bat flip that almost killed Peter Armstrong. Watch the replay. It almost did. And as Harper is rounding the bases. You're thinking, wow, where is a moment like this going to actually stand down the road? Is this going to be something on Bryce Harper's resume? Is this going to be something we think about when we think of Bryce Harper? But as he was rounding the bases, my other thought was, well, it's 2-2. We got a long way to go. And I'll tell you the other thought I had as Bryce is rounding the bases. It's 2-2. It's the bottom of the eighth inning. And we heard so much about how these managers. Both had conversations with major league managers about what bull put arms they can use and who they can't use. We heard about Daniel Polencia who came into the game and got the final three outs in the ninth inning. How he was told Lopez was told the manager of Venezuela. You can only use him in a safe situation.

7:15And that's it. So my brain starts to say, could he use him in a tie game? Then I'm thinking about Team USA. Is Mason Miller actually available? And I would argue that he wasn't because if he was available, how's he not pitching the ninth inning? Why is it Garrett Whitlock? So unfortunately, and I guess this is where, as cool as this tournament is and as fun as this game was, and it was a fun game especially for the middle of March, this is the thing it's missing. You're telling me guys aren't available to pitch out of the bullpen of a winner take all championship game. That's a problem. And that's where my brain went when Bryce hit the two run home run. You can tell me cinema all you want. I'm starting to think about the next inning in the inning after that, especially knowing that we have these dopey manfred man rules in the WBC, including the finals. So I'm thinking about who's available out of the bullpen because we know it was not a full allotment of available relievers.

8:17And I'm also thinking, boy, we really can't have the WBC championship and with a runner on second. We can't have that. Now the good news is when Mark DeRosa decided to go to Garrett Whitlock, who I'm not crapping on Whitlock is pitched very well during the WBC. But he is not as unhittable as Mason Miller, Mason Miller is your best reliever. And if Mason Miller is available in a tie game in the ninth inning, what are we doing? He's obviously pitching. There's no safe situation. You're the home team due to that coin flip. But Garrett Whitlock allowed all of those questions to go away immediately. There weren't a total walks in this game. I think there was a grand total of let's see six between the two teams. But it's about when you walk eyes. We mentioned the four pitch walk to Bobby with junior right before Bryce Harper at the game tying to run home run. If you're a Garrett Whitlock, you cannot walk Louise to rise.

9:18And first of all, Louise to rise does not believe in walking. He never walks. He never strikes out and Garrett Whitlock was able to put him on base in five pitches. Can't have it happen because then you see, then as well, we go to their bench and go to Javier Sinoha as a pinch runner. And on a very close bang bang play. Sinoha steel second base. Absolute no brainer of a challenge from Mark DeRosa. You have nothing to lose at that point. And it's a close enough play. And it's such a huge play. You're talking about the difference between a runner on second and nobody out. And one out of nobody out. I mean, changes everything. And I think that they got it right. Because it was such a close play. And I forget if it was the guy who hits baseball John Smoltz or. The guy who's the Dodger mascot Joe Davis. I forget which one said it. But you're not overturning that. It's just too close. So I have no issue with the challenge.

10:18But you kind of knew there was no way that was going to be overturned. And at that point runner on second, nobody out with the Genio Suarez at the plate. You have to strike him out. That's all I'm thinking about counts two and two counts three and two. We know how Suarez is so aggressive and will definitely fish for a slider in the dirt. He had struck out twice previous in this inning. And off the bat. He absolutely torches that ball to left center field. And right away gets to delete the incredible moment by Bryce Harper. But the bottom of the ninth inning comes. And this LD United States offense with four five and six of the order coming up. They still have a chance to score a run. They still have a chance to beat a reliever in Daniel Polensia who has unhittable as he's been. Is now being asked to throw on back to back days. And look, here's the story of this game in a nutshell. And we can analyze all these different moments.

11:18We'll get to Nolan McLean's performance. We'll get to the wild pitch where we'll Smith did not exactly give you the greatest effort in the world. There's a lot of small things we mentioned this during the DR US game. That can flip a game. No doubt about it. But overall the issue with the Dominican Republic and their loss to the United States was that they didn't hit. And in their case, they missed out on golden opportunities. In the case of the United States. You have a lineup of Bobby Witt Jr. Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Kyle Schwarber, Alex Bregman, Roman Anthony will Smith. You're batting freaking Byron Bucks in Nice. What you cannot do is get completely shut down the way you were shut down. They had three hits in the entire game. And it's crazy. After this game is over, the United States has to stand on the field and get their dopey silver medals.

12:22I mean, they look like schmucks going out there shaking Rob Mann for a tent. Hand. You think they really want to do that? You think these guys want to stand there? If they got embarrassed? And yes, I would use the word embarrassed. You want to know why I know it's baseball and anything can happen on any given night. But this offense three games in a row. Because go back really, I guess you could say four games in a row. If you want to include the Italy game. But this offense so greatly underperformed the talent. Look, in baseball, you can be shut down at any moment. But when we talk about being shut down. It's usually by a pitcher who's really good. Who's shut you down over eight innings. In this case, his greatest good water Rodriguez was because of these restrictive pitch counts. He came out after 57 pitches. It wasn't just at water Rodriguez that shut them down. It was a lot of guys that shut them down. And when we think back to the 2026 United States World Baseball Classic team.

13:24This is going to be my thought. If you ask me this three years from now, I guess it'll be a test. I will think about how the offense did nothing. That's what I'll think about they had their moments. Bryce Harper had his moment in the bottom of the eighth inning of this game. But for the most part, a lineup that was so stacked was so good, was so talented, did absolutely nothing. You've probably heard it said. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. 16:32Pete Hoffman wants to come on and be the captain of met trolls and put all of this on Aaron judge. I know that. I know that's what he wants to do. So Hoff, if that's really what you want to do, and again, this is a met podcast. So if you're a Yankee fan listening right now, too freaking bad. I mean, what do you want me to tell you? So Hoff, if you would like to irrationally crap all over Aaron judge, you certainly can the floor is yours. I just want to say it was a win win for met fans. Because McLean, I know wasn't perfect, but he didn't get the loss. So that's a win. And Aaron judged was total garbage at the plate. So that's another win. So for met fans watching this. It was a great day. You can't you can't complain. It was entertaining.

17:34Listen, Nolan McLean didn't embarrass himself. And I honestly, we talked about the same day. Venezuela has a freaking gauntlet of a lineup. Our lineup to be better though. Our lineup is better. Yeah, well, they look like crap today. They besides Bryce Harper, you know, who I would get mixed, mixed emotions. Yeah, I don't want to see Bryce Harper do anything. So I was like, I'm happy that we tied the game, but came off of Bryce Harper's bat. But the better thing was it didn't come off of Aaron judges back. So. Look, Aaron judge is a great player. There's no denying how great of a player he is. He has a perception issue. And it is going to take him dominating in October. Him winning a world championship to change that perception issue. It's actually very similar to what Alex Rodriguez dealt with. Because here's the thing about a rod that I think people sort of forget. A rod had his postseason moments.

18:34Now, some of it was with Seattle. Some of it was prior to the collapse of 2004. But Alex Rodriguez wasn't all bad in October. But by the time we got to 2009 prior to 2009. The perception of Alex Rodriguez is that he was a choke artist. Aaron judges had moments. We we certainly remember the home ready hit and game three against Toronto. And he said a lot of home runs and wild card games. And games in which they're about to be eliminated. Like I get it. It's not all bad. But I think the perception of Aaron judge. And it only contributed today. Fair enough because it's the world baseball classic. It's not the postseason. It's different. I wouldn't say it's better or worse. Okay. It's worse. But it's different. Right. He is added to the perception that he's not a clutch player. Now, what I've always said. It's about Barry Bonds back in the day. Because yes, I've talked into microphones for a very long time. What I used to say about Barry Bonds was he's a great player.

19:34And if you give a great player enough opportunities to show you. That they're great. They will eventually show you that. And it took Barry Bonds a long time. But in 2002, even in a world series, they lost. Barry Bonds dominated. And you finally saw him. Show. He can be great. Same thing with a rider took a very long time. And more post seasons than not. He wasn't very good. But he eventually broke through. I think that about Aaron judge because he's a great player. But he stuck in this game. If we're just talking about this game, you know, I think. The free one meatball that he took. Is probably the one that jumps out at you the most. It's not just the strikeouts and the ground out with a guy on base. It's the missed opportunities that he had. And look, heavy lies the crown. You're the captain of Team USA. You are the king of New York. Fair or not. Even though it was everybody in this lineup who did nothing. Kyle Schorber struck out three times. I mean, it wasn't just Aaron judge.

20:34It was plenty of guys. Alex Bregman did nothing in this game. Will Smith, who was incredibly clutching game seven in the world series, did nothing in this game. Bobby Whit Jr. did not drive in a run in the World Baseball Classic. Bryce Harbor did nothing until the very end. Right. But heavy lies the crown. So judge is going to take a lot of heat. As far as how I felt about that, here's what I would tell you. When judge came up, I was hoping he came through not because I'm a nice guy, not because I'm a closet Yankee fan, but because yes, I was genuinely rooting for Team USA. And here's where I had weird mixed emotions. So same thing with Bryce. You know, Bryce Harbor comes up. I want him to 16. Like I am rooting for Team USA. I'm investing three hours of my time. Staying up late, which for me nowadays, this is late watching a baseball game. I want to win. Like I'm out of here just to score it and talk about it on the radio or on the Rico. Like I want to see Team USA win. So when Bryce Harper comes up, I want him to come through. But when he hit that home run,

21:35there was that mixed emotion of God. I can't stand Bryce Harper. Is he really having this moment like this cinema moment? This captain America moment. Is this really happening to this phony Bryce Harbor? So I was mixed as he was rounding the bases. It was not pure jubilation or jubilation, whatever the frickin' order is. But I wanted him to succeed because I wanted the United States to win. But yes, when he hit the home run and he was rounding the bases, I didn't love it. Put it that way. You know who I actually oddly enough was happy to say, was happy to see before well for Venezuela was Jose Bouton. Jose Bouton. Yes, I knew you were going to do. I loved it. And I loved that Salvi Perez pause the game at all moment. You know, got went out there and made sure that he pitched well. I mean, you know what? I got tipped the cap. I loved Jose Bouton when he was a man.

22:37Yeah, I wouldn't say I loved him as a man, but I don't hate him as a man. And you you look at Venezuela. There are two guys I don't like. Unven as well. Obviously, Ronald the coon you're junior. I don't think there's any question. If you're a met fan of your breathing, you're not a fan of his. And it's not that I dislike Salvador Perez, but I still get haunted by the 2015 World Series. So he's not a bad guy. But I look around at a lot of the other Venezuelan players. I don't mind like I don't mind. Geno Suarez, as he's called. I never really mind Labor Torres. And I really felt good for Miguel Cabrera. Like watching Miguel Cabrera cry made me feel good. Johan Santana was there about that. Pitch and coach. Johan Santana. So I guess I feel good for him. As far as knowing McLean is concerned. This is what is so difficult about. These abbreviated starts. And it really is like when you throw 60 65 pitches.

23:37It's an abbreviated start. Obviously that's one of the biggest issues with the World Baseball class. You don't get to see real starting pitching. You get to see partial starting pitching. But when you only pitch four innings or four and two thirds innings. It's not a full performance. How did Nolan McLean pitch? No, McLean was good. Was he great? No, it wasn't great. Was he terrible? No, did he crop the bed? No, he was good. I thought that first inning. And when he gave up the lead off hit to Ronald Acunio Jr. on the first pitch. I was nervous because I'm thinking to myself, oh, I don't want this to get bad. I mean, he's our guy. I want him to pitch well. I know that even if he doesn't, it's not the end of the world. He's going to Port Saint Lucie. He'll make a spring training start. He'll be ready to go hopefully for day two of the baseball season against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Have you got grooms? He had a very good second inning tacked on a couple of strikeouts. That third inning, the wild pitch was obviously the killer. Just an absolute killer. And I thought that will Smith could have made a better effort to knock that ball down. But either way, Nolan McLean threw it wild enough to advance the runners. He gave up the sack fly to Mackel Garcia, which gave Venezuela their first run. But again, he showed the poise by getting out of that inning and not allowing there to be any more damage. He pitched a clean fourth. Then he makes the big mistake to will you rebraue. It's funny of everything that happened in this game. Whether it's the wild pitch, whether it's the sacrifice fly, whether it's the Bryce Arper to run home run. The moment that caused the biggest reaction from me was when he gave up the home run to will you rebraue.

26:41There was an audible f word that came out of my mouth. So I did find myself very into the Nolan McLean start, but he was okay. I think that Nolan McLean. And I guess you could take this as a negative, but it's almost a compliment. I think he's sort of forgotten about in this game. You know, if you're writing the obituary of team USA and what happened and how this ended. I think the headlines will be Bryce Harper. It'll be the offense in general, certainly Aaron judge. And then I guess you think of the ending and you think of. Well, why was it made similar in this game? You think of that. So I think Nolan McLean start while solid. I don't think it becomes like a top five story as a met fan. I think as long as he's healthy. And he comes out of this start feeling good. This was a great experience for him. Now, this was great because he's pitching in front of a sold out crowd. He's pitching in an environment that is electric.

27:43He's got pitch in an environment like that all season long. And I know that's similar to what got Aaron judging trouble, but it's true. The environment in these WBC games are through the roof. Is that the world series? No. Now, maybe to some players, it is. It's not to me. I also think as we talked about. You're not getting the true essence of Major League baseball. When you've got bullpen restrictions and you've got starting pitching restrictions. I'm sorry. That's it ain't real. And that's not me crying. I'm not crying about the result. I would have said that either way. I've said that before. Whether it was in 2023 or 2017. And really, the only way to try to fix it. Is to have this in the middle of the season. But even if it's in the middle of the season. Are it managers still going to call the country's managers and say, wait a second. I don't want you to use this guy. He's pitched two days in a row. So it certainly doesn't solve it.

28:43But it makes it a little bit easier. In terms of it not being as restrictive as it is right now when you're in the middle of spring trend. Let me read some of your instant reaction emails. The Rico B at gmail.com Sean writes. Am I unpaid triadic? Hi, Evan. Does any American really care much about who wins the WBC? In my eyes, this tournament is simply a fun way to watch some baseball with tons of talent and get ramped up for the season. I enjoyed watching the clean and other meds play. But what I won't ever do is root for guys on teams I don't like. Every time Harper, Shorber, Judge, and others came up. I was hoping for a strikeout. In the late stages of the game, I even want to vent as well at a win just because I love the underdog. Getting very excited for some real meds baseball soon, Sean. Are you unpatriotic? Let me ask you this. What is patriotism? It's loving your country. It doesn't mean you have to root for your country's baseball team.

29:45Now, I was, but I do admit, Sean, that there was some mixed emotions when guys came up from teams I don't like. But if you're sitting there rooting against Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, and Kyle Shorber, then you're really not rooting for Team USA because that's three, four, and five of the order. But as far as what you like about it, that it's competitive, entertaining, all-star lead in baseball in the middle of March, I love that, too. That has been something I've loved about this since 2006, that you're giving me something that feels closer to real, then spring training, and you're doing it in the middle of March. Alex writes, Mark DeRosa should never manage again. Why is Mason Miller not in there pitching the ninth? DeRosa is a clown. You can tell me, and maybe we'll be off before Mark DeRosa meets the media, but my assumption is he wasn't available.

30:45That because if you're not going to Mason Miller, and I mentioned this at the beginning of the pod, toward the beginning of the pod, Mason Miller is not pitching in the ninth inning of a tie game, then he's not available. Now, this is not Buck Showalter and Zach Britain with the Orioles years ago. You're the home team. There is no safe situation. So unless you're thinking I'm saving him for the runner on second, nobody out, man-friend man, which I understand it, but you got to get there first. There really is no answer for the Mason Miller decision, other than he wasn't available. I think the rumor is that Mark DeRosa is saving him for game two of the WBC finals. Yeah, he thought it was best of three. But I knew the rules. This is a misnomer, you guys. Jeff writes, after watching the WBC, we at least, and I have come to the conclusion that Captain Aaron Judge is a great regular season. But when it comes to the playoffs or international competition, he comes up very small, agree or disagree.

31:51Jeff, there's no denying that Aaron Judge has not been the same player in the postseason. And if you want to include this, okay, fine. He has not been the same player in the postseason as he's been in the regular season. But I do stand by the thought that eventually you show who you are. Let me give you a great example of that. Andy Pettit. Andy Pettit is widely considered to be one of the great postseason pitchers of all time. And obviously that's, I shouldn't say obviously because some people will disagree. It's not true. Like I'll pull up Andy Pettit's numbers up for you real quick and I'll prove it to you. He is the same pitcher in the postseason as he is in the regular season. And he's had some very bad postseason starts specifically game six of the world series and oh one that jumps out of me. Andy Pettit has a career ERA of 3.85. His postseason ERA is 3.81. He's made 44 starts in the playoffs who is such a big sample size that he has basically been what he is over his career.

32:59Now one counter you can make and it's absolutely fair. I don't like to be one sided in these things is that you're facing better competition in the playoffs. So having an ERA that's basically the same shows you how good he is because he's facing better competition. Absolutely fine. I'll give you that. So now he's slightly better in the postseason and the regular season. It's not that big of a difference. And if you go through Andy's career there again was plenty of really bad performances and plenty of great performances. Until I happen to believe that if you give people and great players enough of a sample size. They will just show you that they are who they are. Charlie writes I have some questions from Arcturosa. Why is Will Smith ending in the seventh? Where's Cal Raleigh? Where is Mason Miller? Why not bring Rodgers in in a clean inning? Why bring Rodgers in without a double play in order? Why walk a brave? Why didn't you pin shit for Aaron judge?

34:00Stop with the shit for Aaron judge. Will you stop? The Mason Miller question is the big one. That's the big one. The Tyler Rodgers question. I mean he went to Tyler Rodgers because Garrett Whitlock was cropping the bed. That's why he went to him. Will right. Hey guys. Do you think it makes more sense to have this tournament after the season when the players have their timing down. The pitching counts up and don't have to worry about being injured for the season. Love the Rico will know. I think after the season is actually far worse than spring training. Why you asked number one. I don't think most people will care. You just had six months of baseball. You just had a long regular season, a long postseason. And now you're saying go watch more. I think a the fans won't care. B. I don't know how many players are going to want to do it after a long season. I think they want their break. They want their time off. Also do guys in the world series participate considering it just tap will have ended.

35:03And for guys that don't make the playoffs, they have a month off. What are they doing? Are they going to a special spring training? So I don't think after the season works. I think the best idea. And I do believe that baseball will eventually do this, especially with the Olympics coming up in two years. I think you have the earlier rounds in March. And then you play the semis and the finals during all star week. And I think if you do that. While there will still be restrictions from managers because they're still going to want to keep their players healthy. I think they would be. Last restrictions Nolan McLean would not be pulled after 63 pitches. He'd be pulled after 85 pitches or whatever it is. But overall really good performance by Nolan McLean, solid performance by Nolan McLean. And I can't wait to see him now pitch in the regular season. Overall, I think the WBC was fun. I continue to be impressed how much it's grown. Because you go back to O6 and even O9, 13, 17.

36:03There wasn't the same interest. You can see it building. You can see more people care about it. I think the TV ratings prove that. And I certainly think that the vibe you get even for just from WFA and is different. I mean, I was playing the old clips. If you missed it the other day on how did each. The main day part open after the 2017 WBC championship. And it was mocking or nothing. And I think in 2026 after losing the event as well, there'll be a lot more discussion about it. So I think that we continue to see this event grow. But if you're looking for me to not be able to sleep at night because of the way this thing ended, that's not going to happen.
